Title: Aliens themed mod for Battlefield 2142

Hi, I recently started developing a Battlefield 2142 mod inspired by the LV-426 events from Aliens movie, named Acheron.

You can also check out the mod's Battlefield Singleplayer forum (http://www.battlefieldsingleplayer.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=19375) or its ModDB page (http://www.moddb.com/mods/acheron) for more information.

It aims to bring two factions - USCMC and Aliens. Both of them should have at least some level of customisation.

Hey! I was reading into this and I just wanted to make sure if the redux mod is compatible with this mod. Your moddb page never specified anything and was curious after I saw your mod on gavp and I was so excited that battlefield 2142 is my favorite battlefield. Are the aliens going to also be in the mod?

Hi, if you mean the Revive 2142 then yes, it's 100% compatible. About the aliens, I think they're a must - we're currently working on the USCM weapons and vehicles which should be the core of the first release and then we'd like to add the alien faction, marine skins etc. And finally the Hadley's Hope in the last one.

Can you tell us if this is going to be more arcade-y, in the line of 90s FPS's where spawns are numerous, unpredictable, and require maneuverability but affording more freedom and flexibility to approach enemies in your own playstyle...or the modern shooter style, where every enemy and encounter is scripted and planned out to the most minute detail where the environment is created around these forced encounters and which are self-explanatory with regard to the most efficient way of killing enemies? Or am I just an idiot to be asking this question?

Actually, I'm not skilled enough to change the basic BF2142 game modes much so expect a very arcade-y battles with no scripts at all.
As a marine you'll be able to choose one of multiple spawn points and then your objective will be to fight against the xenos over some areas(/control points). As soon as one of the teams have none left, it's a pure survival with no option to respawn.
That wasn't the best explanation though. :D
It'll be much better than it sound, don't worry. Also don't expect a campaign, it'll be all up to you how your situation ends up being at the end of the round. ^^

Not yet, weapons/vehicles are the priority now, although we've been considering including some free xenomorph models in the first release before we make our own ones.

Actually... Not really.  ;D
One should surely feature the whole complex with the atmosphere processor in the background and there should be multiple variants of it (rainy, night etc). Such a map could work really well with the arcade gameplay. And probably, just probably, some rather CQB map(s) set in some section(s) of the atmosphere processor itself.

Alright, the APC model has just been finished. It might be a matter of weeks before it gets exported and textured but we'll try to hurry!

Hell yeah, hopefully it will only increase the player's immersion and make being gunner much more fun. ^^

Glad you're asking! :laugh:

All the weapons planned for the version 1.0 as well as the progress are featured in this spreadsheet (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1PCNbAfhB5_mU-vsayRPMYyidZKxBy8E5f2yl3Mb-EI8/edit#gid=0). We'd like (but we might eventually abandone this idea as it's quite ambitious) make a version 1.5 that would feature the vehicles, weapons (including the M42A Scoped Rifle ;)) and items from the technical manual. That's not all though, we've already been discussing potential new maps inspired by places from several comic books.

I'd love to see some with Giger's Egg Silo in. Like they often used in the comics as hives.

I don't even know which comics those were, they were all featured in the Aliens Omnibus though.

It has appeared on the map which would probably be the first one to come - it was an arid place located on the Xenomorph Homworld(/Xenomorph Prime). It's a must have thing in those maps indeed! In the movie, they turned the atmosphere processor into the hive so it would be awesome to see the "standalone" hive. :D

Indeed but I'm afraid that would by far surpass not only my modding abilities but also those of all the other BF2/2142 modders. Water floating is hardcoded in these games and noone has so far come up with solution that could make the soldiers dive/swim underwater. It will most likely be only limited to the area above the surface but I believe it won't be that bad.  ;D

We've got the first piece of the soundtrack for Acheron, its main menu music (https://soundcloud.com/whiteout_official/acheron-main-menu-music/s-5IrS8) (which is also a main theme), composed and performed by an epic musician known as NinjaTheCat (http://www.moddb.com/members/ninjathecat) on ModDB.

"When tasked with creating a main theme for Acheron, I originally set out to re-create the scores of the films exactly. However, this proved to be rather challenging, so instead, I decided to come up with something original. The way I saw it, Acheron has its own place within the Aliens universe, although not official canon, and so I felt it was deserving of its own unique soundtrack. I tried to stick as close to the feel of the Alien franchise, hence the use of elements of the Alien: Covenant OST that you might recognise. After quite few attempts, this is what I came up with. It captures the tension as well as the raw emotion explored within the franchise. The main theme of Alien is survival, or at least thats what I take from it, and I think this conveys that quite well."

USCM Combat Knife (Gerber Mark 2) is the next weapon to be added to the mod. I've already made the blade as shown on this image:

You'll most probably only be able to take down one of the aliens, being also taken down by their acid blood. So make it count.
Also, the texture artist has already made some preparation to texture the APC:

Looking good man! I doubt it'd be possible in 2142 but I'd love to see a mechanic that makes better use the acid blood some day. Destructible scenery or blade weapons like this get a one-time use. That kinda thing.

Glad you like it! It shall use a mechanic which has already been tested - when a soldier dies, he explodes. I know some guys used it for "suicide bomber" soldiers. In our case, the xenos would explode with some amateur acid blood effect around them when they're killed, so the closer you are, the more damage you'll take.  ;D

Oh, I really appreciate your empathy. :) Yeah, sometimes it takes literally a hundred hours to make a well-detailed model and I'm not even going to guess how much time the texture artist spends brining it to life. :D

Gerber Mark II combat knife has been successfully modelled and added to the list of the weapons awaiting export and texturing! Our texture artist and weapon exporter both had some important things to focus on but should be back soon, so the November might be a very productive month for Acheron's development.  ;)

Guys, I have a bad news, very bad. The team behind the Revive Project of Battlefield 2/2142/Heroes agreed on abandoning the project after it got hit with C&D by Electornic Arts.
This means the end of the master server and it will make Acheron co-op matches either harder to set or downright impossible. As far as I know, a singleplayer ranking can be added but I'm afraid that SP rounds only will kind of ruin the player's experience as it's a non-linear sandbox game.

Fortunately, it seems like there there is gonna be a way to play it anyway, thanks to the Dethklok guys (who've had their servers running long before the Revive team showed up), so even though it might be a bit harder to make the game work with their "solution", I'll try to post some tutorial once the mod's out. 8)

Hey I dont play this Battlefield game, but I'm seeing all the progress you are making with your mod, and it looks really good! I've only played a little bit of Battlefield 3 on ps3 i think it was, it was a fun game, I can see how an Aliens mod for that type of game would be a blast if such a mod were completed. Good luck!

Yay, thank you so much, matey! 2142 is the best BF game for many of those who gave it a try and it turned out to have quite a few features that an Aliens-inspired mod could use. Like I said, when the first version's ready to be played, I'll be sure to post some simple tutorial on how to install the game, so you can give it a try if you'll feel like it.

Thank you. I'm not very well informed about these things in general but I can tell you that I've never seen any weapon or vehicle texture larger 4096x4096 and I know that BF modders in general consider that a limit. 30k is probably the limit (or close to the limit) of the vehicle polycount but I really have no idea about the weapons' polycount. ;)

Well, sounds similar to Skyrim then...common max texture size was 4k and polycount <5k weapons, round 10k for chars. Ofc higher poly count would work as well. Was just curious if such a relative old game could handle modern sizes or was limited to something like 512 or 1k texture and extra low poly counts. Thanks for the reply!

Yeah, I know but the weapon (for some reason) has the bolt on it, so we've decided to be a bit inaccurate here and use it so the reloading will take longer (to compensate the large magazine size). :-\

Good idea then, I hate when games compensate for that by making the reload so much slower than necessary. For example in call of duty mw2 it takes about 7 seconds to reload the m249 saw, while I've been trained to reload my c9 lmg (which is practically the same gun) in about 4. If you have any questions about what you should do for reload animations give me a shout, I sell and shoot guns for both my jobs

The development of the first stage is almost complete by 25% as the spreadsheet suggests. We plan on releasing a short trailer featuring the APC and some of the weapons that are ready to be shown sometime soon! ;)

I'm bringing you a little update on the APC textures by this awesome guy (http://www.moddb.com/members/na762094)! As you can see, there are still places which need more work or some change but it shouldn't take much longer!
Another good news is that the vehicle exporter seems to be making progress with the main turret movement up and down on the rails. :D

Props to the "skinner" for that model, I used to do a lot of that Myself a few years ago for a flight sim named "IL2 Sturmovik" so I know it can take a long time and people never really know or notice all the details you obsess over :)

I also have a question for all of you. It'd be great if we managed to fill all 6 item slots in the kit customisation menu (from which you'll be able to choose two items to use in the battle) and as it's a Battlefield mod and Battlefield games are known for the teamwork-based gameplay, I thought that adding a medkit couldn't hurt the mod. Despite I wasn't able to find any medkit in the whole movie, there is a medical device that Dietrich inspects Newt with.

Yeah that sounds like a good idea to me. Having a medic/med kit, especially in a Battlefield mod, seems like an important if not essential addition to something like that, and since that's the closest thing we get to an actual med kit in the movie I say go with it.

In fact I'd actually appreciate the attention to detail that you'd actually be basing it on that device from the movie, rather than potentially being put off that you'd made something up from scratch etc. Like Hicks said, nothing wrong with a bit of artistic licence, especially when just about every Alien or Predator game has had some to varying degrees.

This image should feature all the new things that we've managed to make during the year 2017, from the March 4th when I began to model the M41A pulse rifle as the sole developer to the December 31st when the texture artist sent me the textured pulse rifle and our team already consisted of seven people, each one of whom has brought a unique skill and talent. Hmm, funny that it all began and ended with the pulse rifle... ???
Of course, the image features neither all the new sounds and music that the animator and the music artist made nor any of the epic levels (or maps, if you will) that the current leader of the Star Wars themed Battlefield 2142 mod First Strike (http://www.moddb.com/mods/first-strike) generously offered us to use until we make enough of our own maps. But I hope that You like it anyway and that my Photoshop skills aren't that bad. :laugh: And again a BIG thanks to all of You for sticking with us the whole time. Now that our team is already complete in the beginning of this year, we should be able to make much more content and make it much more effectively and maybe, just maybe, the miracle will happen and we'll manage to bring you the release of the mod's first version this year. :)

The larger flare on the left should replace the small beacon that appears under the flag as an objective marker.
The smaller marking flares on the right called M-94 will be available in Your Kit Customization menu as a selectable item. You'll have five of them which You'll be able throw onto the ground to mark Your way through an unknown environment.

The first flare is meant to resemble those ones that Hicks lights before the dropship crashes. It was really hard to make out the exact shape of it even on a pretty high quality video, so I hope I got it right. I had to base the bottom segment on a single frame where it reflected some light and it seemed to have looked like this. Hopefully it really it does. :laugh:

I've been playing around with the terrain textures and undergrowth, trying to get the map resemble the kelp layer covering the ocean's surface of the Bracken's World as much as possible.
Though it's just a hard terrain (not the dense layer of kelp), I feel like it feels watery and wet enough. I used the water puddle type of terrain and as you can see on the image below (which also nicely demonstrates the four-wheel steering of the APC), the water splashes around you when you drive on (and shoot) the surface. Plus, it makes nice splashing sounds when you walk on it or shoot it.

This isn't really what we're focusing on at the moment but the terrain of this map is prepared, so when the time comes, we only need to make a few static objects (like the abandoned outpost and the "Alphatech" net) to make the map resemble the location shown in the A:CM comic.

Not sure if anyone still reads this but here's another update: the recon class' portable heat sink from the USCM Technical Manual. Due to some problems regarding item unlocking we've decided to keep four different classes like the vanilla game: Recon, Assault, Medic (replacing the vanilla Engineer), Support.

The Assault class of BF2142 had Medic class' abilities and the Engineer was a standalone class. In Acheron, this will be swapped to make it resemble the movie more.

Ohh, many thanks! Right now we'd like to add four items from the TM: the M42A Scope Rifle, M4A3 pistol (which is basically the the real-life M1911), the portable heat sink and the M5 bounding mine (which only appears on a simple sketch but I'd like to base its design on the cylindrical item on the chest of the sniper on the concept above - it doesn't look that different from the real life bounding mines after all).
All of these CM: TM items should be used by the Recon class (which is basically a sniper) so if anyone wouldn't like the expanded universe stuff, they could simply ignore this class.
We'd also love to add more things like the Phased Plasma Infantry Gun, M5 RPG, M112 HIMAT missile system and many armoured vehicles in later updates. Some comic weapons which would only appear on specific comic-based maps are also something that I'd personally love to add.

There are some really ambitous goals. :D

Bringing a little update...

Due to the impossibility of accessing unlockable items without the master server, we've realised that the original idea of having just one basic class with unlockable weapons and items couldn't work.

Instead, we've agreed on keeping the original four classes (but swapping the engineer for a medic).

(*the recon's day night goggles could later be a part of a new soldier model but until then won't have any standalone model)
The last item of each class is only usable by a squad leader.
The medical and ammo supplies will be throwable items with only a limited resupplying/healing capability. The medical hub and the welding torch will provide an unlimited healing/repairing. Vehicles will be the source of unlimited ammo resupply, so keeping them safe will be important.
Lastly, the assault's techinician kit and recon's heat sink won't do anything directly. The techinician kit will be more of physical representation of the assault's ability to open some gates (that the other classes won't be able to) in the later updates while the heat sink should be more of a representation of the recon's invisibility on the thermal vision. Or at least, that's the plan right now.

I'm really sorry for the low frame rate and frame drops as well as for the four interruptions by the Bandicut "ads" but I haven't found any other free video editing program that's as easy to work with and that doesn't reduce the video quality that much. :'(

Yeah, that would probably make more sense as the M240 fuel tanks as well as many other magazines are larger than this bag and wouldn't even fit in.
Would it be a problem if the Frost's bag wasn't throwable, so the support guy could only resupply the teammates directly? I mean, it's a shoulder bag after all.

The grenades launched from it explode upon impact which is a great advantage in most situations. I'd just like to make it clear that the explosion on the images above is so big because the GL took down a light vehicle (explosion if which you see), not because it fires some super-fiery projectiles. :D

We'd like to stick traditional when possible, so no underbarrel shotgun has been discussed yet (and it probably wouldn't be so useful as the class already has the M37 shotgun as its secondary weapon) but someone has already suggested that we use the M108 canister rounds from the technical manual. I don't want to promise anything but there still is one free slot in the class' loadout, so I'm definitely not ruling out the possibility of having more than one type of shell for the launcher. I don't want to talk about the future plans for the mod too much as we might never get that far with it but I'd still like to hear your opinions about this: you know, I originally refused the idea of having the W-Y mercs in the mod but I recently though about featuring the stuff from Neill Blomkamp's Alien 5 concept art and this particular imagine made me think about having the W-Y faction as a mixture of human soldiers and the "tained" xenomorphs that could fight both marines and xenos and it could make them quite a unique faction. The human-vs-human FPS mechanics of the BF2142 could be much more useful then as well. They mercs seem also to have some new weaponry and vehicles which might be great to play with and which would make then different from the USCM faction.

And I'd just like to let you know that the M37 shotgun is being slightly reworked, to resemble the actual Hicks' shotgun more. If you remember the gameplay video from some time ago, the shotgun not only had no iron sights but wasn't properly centralised, so aiming made the player even less accurate. This should be also fixed.

I'm all for a WY and controlled xenomorphs faction in this mod, it would give it a kind of comic book feel to it which could be fun here. I have no idea how do you guys plan to implement xenomorphs in the mod but I wouldn't have a problem if the colonial marines fought also WY and other rouge military factions here like in they would usually do.

I know it took some really long while to finish but those last bits were such a pain in the ass. Modelling of the scope's rubber hood alone took me about 8 hours. ;D

Type 88, a chinese bullpup sniper rifle from Battlefield 2, has animations which should work perfectly with the M42A. At least according to my calculations, haha. I'll try and hurry with the UV mapping, so the gun can actually be exported to the game and I'll let you, guys, know what I found out. :laugh:


One last thing, I have to mention an M42A-related forum thread (https://www.tapatalk.com/groups/matsucorp/m42a-scoped-rifle-t696-s40.html) which had a few images of the Scope Rifle's miniature model that gave me great insight when deciding how to model certain parts, mainly the barrel area.

The upper line of images shows what a detonation of the mine looks like in the mod. The first explosion appears when the propelling charge in the platform launches the mine into the air, followed closely by the explosion of the mine itself once the optimal height has been reached.

Unfortunately I didn't manage to hit the Christmas release like I planned because I really wanted the demo to have xenomorphs in it and it took way longer than I though it could. The good news is that they're in the mod now. The bad news is that they look like ^this^ and all my attempts to find out why failed. So...it is what it is, though I hope you'll be able to enjoy it anyway.

Assuming you have Battlefield 2142 installed, I recomend downloading BF2142 Hub (https://www.moddb.com/games/battlefield-2142/downloads/bf2142-hub1) to patch the game properly and avoid some internet connection issues. Here's a guide:


This tutorial (https://www.moddb.com/mods/project-remaster/tutorials/how-to-install-and-start-any-bf2142-mod-universal-tutorial-with-pictures) should guide through the mod's installation.

Note: The maps featuring aliens have a large X across their preview image. You can find the Weyland-Yutani forces on the others. At the moment they are a combination of the PAC (one of the two factions in the vanilla game) soldiers and "tained" xenomorphs.
You can find the APC on the following maps: Minsk, Shuhia Taiba, Sidi Power Plant, Verdun.

I'll be happy to hear any opinion and criticism, just please keep in mind that the mod's nowhere near complete, it lacks much of the content but I tried to make it as polished as possible. Hope you'll have a good time trying it out! :)

That aside, how are you going to explain that W-Y is hostile to the marines, besides very questionable research to xenomorphs? Are they like PMCs from A:CM? Who guard the place while the Marines unintendedly barge in during an investigation? Or something like a Commando unit (of A3), complications that rose high that the Commandos are intending to capture the Xenomorphs, but Marines don't want to and try to negotiate, but failed and resorted into a bloody (both acid and iron) skirmish?

It's honestly a bit of anomaly to me on how will the W-Y faction will go. If A:CM did badly, and if other games did it good, then... how'd you go for my question?

Cheers, buddy! Unfortunately, unlike its predecessor BF2, Battlefield 2142 doesn't seem to support shaders, so the only way to make the background was to add it as an image overlay of the screen. Luckily, I got it to work with a few blending effects and it turned out pretty nice. Good luck with your project, I'd try coming up with some helpful advice but, unfortunately, I'm not very familiar with Doom.

Very good question, I'm actually still not sure if I'll keep the W-Y faction as I feel like the movies never really gave us a reason to believe that it could ever use military power against the USCM.
However, after looking at all the Alien 5 concept art I realised that the corporation probably would eventually weaponise the alien and I really liked the idea of a faction that not only utilises the firepower of the marines but combines it with xenomorph soldiers. Plus, having a (partially) human faction oppose the marines makes the gameplay a bit more symmetric so that the mod doesn't turn into a full-on zombie mod but makes use of the Battlefield essence.

I agree, though, that it all seems a bit unlikely given that the corporation had to use the marines to protect its colonies and didn't seem to have any military/mercenary foces of its own.

I can probably do the image overlay stuffs just fine, though I am not an expert on shaders for the source port, GZDoom, which is the platform I am modding with. But the real problem is how will those boxes appear and resize according to monster height. I heard it is possible to do this on ZScript (a coding platform along with DECORATE), but since I am not an expert to it, might as well pass. So for my basis on the Smartgun's HUD on my mod, I'll use A:CM's, though it is less accurate to the base material.

Speaking of, the Smartguns tracks and detects infrared targets, but since the xenomorphs are not that type of targets you'd be seeing on the HUD, or notably tracking. You can't track an alien this way. A mistake that many games that feature both the alien and the smartgun (AvP, A:CM, etc.). So hence, for my mod (since it takes place years after Aliens), the Smartgun there has updated tracking mechanics and sensors inherited from the Sentry turrets (which does detect aliens and fires upon them) and the Motion Tracker. I used that as an excuse to also update the Smartgun's HUD to A:CM's, though in a much bare bones feature.

Yeah, but having a non resizable target rectangle means its size will always be comparable to that of the aim circle. That's why I made it so that once enough of their areas overlap, the circle appears and the target is locked. That's pretty much how the Technical Manual describes that part of the process, so I guess it's not perfect but close enough, especially with the limits the game. :laugh:

I wouldn't call it a mistake as we don't know for sure. The thing is when one of the characters in the hive said that perhaps the aliens aren't visible on infrared, the aliens were hybernating (in a really steamy environment). They didn't even notice the marines until Apone used the flamethrower to burn the chestburster which is when they started waking up.
I mean I like way you avoided this issue but I'm not entirely convinced by the argument that they give away no heat signature in the first place.

Good point. I've had the same idea of giving the W-Y olive green pulse rifles but it always comes down to the fact that the faction might be removed eventually, so why bother, you know. I'd like to finish the works on aliens and marines first. But the idea of W-Y having its own military has so much potential that I think they deserve more than just a reskin of the USCM weaponry.

Ah, neat. So, what inspirations are you going for their weaponry? A:CM has a load of original weaponry aside from the usual pulse rifles we all saw and love, but they're not as satisfying to fire, you can always tweak them. There is also the choice for W-Y to use contemporary weaponry, such as Prometheus and Covenant, albeit modified to an extent. If you're planning to use a specialized class for the W-Y faction along with the xenos, roles such as sniper or demolitions, then AvP has you covered, the main frontlines would be the xenos. But yeah, it's good to have some thoughts with other ideas, despite the fact that the mission for the mod will remove them eventually.

this is a summary of all the progress we've made with Acheron in 2021, taken from the mod's ModDB page (https://www.moddb.com/mods/acheron/features/acheron-2021-development-summary). I was a bit more active on the AVPGalaxy forums than on ModDB throughout the last year, so I have posted some of the things below in this thread already but there should still be stuff you haven't seen yet.

WEAPONS
COMPLETE OVERHAUL
The most notable changes that made it into the mod already concern the handheld weapons. They've been through lots of changes which resulted in improved recoil, deviation and damage of the projectiles.

If you expected some visual improvements though, you won't be disappointed! We've collected a couple great-looking animations for our weapons, too! We thank for most of those to Develop013 (who has just recently returned to the modding scene!) but also to EnemySniper and Chuc.

HUD OVERHAUL
As you might have noticed on the images above, the HUD has been toned down quite a bit. Many of its elements have been reserved for specific gadgets or situations (such as ammo counter for the pulse rifle, minimap for the motion tracker or lifeline for the medical hub/when standing close to a medic).

And since the crosshair is now gone, the player can now turn on an IR helmet sight by using the 'Q' comm rose. The same method was used to rework the Smartgun eyepiece.

NEW GADGETS AND MECHANICS
M42A 20X Scope and Deployable Bipod
We've also done some improvements to some of the weapon/gadget models. As you may have seen the M42A has received a proper 20X ballistic scope and I can tell you that scoring a headshot to an alien from 300 metres has never felt more satisfying! M240 Wetshot
M42A isn't the only primary weapon with two modes of fire (folded/deployed bipod). Another such weapon is the M240 flamethower which is now capable of firing in a so-called "wetshot" mode, when the nozzle burner is switched off and the operator can spray the target with a stream of liquid fuel which can then be ignited (even by using a sidearm!).



More Grenade Launcher Shells!
For the fans of the grenade launcher, we have some good news! All the grenades (except for the M40 HE grenade) are now used exclusively as grenade launcher shells (as originally intended) and we finally have all seven of them - the latest addition being the M230 Baton round (black cap). Although rarely issued to Colonial Marines, this low-velocity projectile can be shot directly at the target or bounced off of surfaces.

We also have to mention the M72A1 Starshell round (white cap) which can provide illumination over a dark battlefield!

Improved Ammo/Medical Hub
It was no secret that the ammo/medical hub models needed some quality improvements. Well, now they not only have a new handheld model but both of them also received a unique stationary model (the textures could still use some more work).

Used Magazines
With each reload, the player now drops the (empty) magazine on the ground!

Legendary Kits
The legendary pickup kits also finally found their way into the mod! You can now find kits of Cpl. Hicks, PFC. Vasquez and PFC. Hudson on each map. Each kit contains one legendary weapon, unique to the character that it belongs to.

That's right, a facehugger! It lacks textures and most of all it lacks an egg to be launched from but we'll get there eventually.

VEHICLES
APC OVERHAUL (work in progress)
The APC has received a lot of attention from us lately. New LODs for better optimisation, new collision meshes for better interaction, new interior model - you name it! It still needs some retexturing but we've finally completed the model of the rear compartment for passengers. The driver's compartment is the next item on the list!

MAPS
BRACKEN'S WORLD (work in progress)
There's no doubt that the mod could really use some new maps but at the same time, they're arguably the most time-consuming feature when it comes to their development. Of course, that hasn't stopped us from at least trying - you might remember our good old friend 'Bracken's World' from a screenshot I shared ages ago. It is a kelp-farming colony from one of the Aliens: Colonial Marines comics.

Although being far from finished, it has turned from a vast empty field of kelp into a strange surface covered with a futuristic mega-structure. The outpost (once finished) should hide an alien hive for a new game mode (please, keep reading for more details on that).

GAME MODES
CONQUEST: HIVE ASSAULT
We've spent some time trying to come up with a unique "aliens" twist on Battlefield's classic Conquest mode and this is what we've come up with. Conquest: Hive Assault is essentially your standard Conquest: Assault mode with the Marines attacking. The key difference is that one of the flags is a Hive where the alien Queen rests. The Hive functions as a base which can only be neutralised by eliminating the Queen but in order to do that, the Marines have to first fight their way to the Hive and then through its tight corridors packed with aliens and eggs with facehuggers before finally reaching the Queen's chamber. It might be fair to compare this part of the mode to the boarding of a Titan in the classic Titan mode. Once inside the chamber, the surviving Marines will have a choice to either try taking out the Queen to neutralise the Hive or destroying her "eggsack" (the easier target) to prevent her from spawning more eggs.

As for the base of the attacking team, the Marines will spawn in the hangar bay of the USS Sulaco. They will be able to pick (and perhaps even customise) their kits in the Armory, board either the M577 APC or the M579, its AA variant, and use the Cheyenne dropship for a combat drop. All this is theoretically possible, we just need to finish all the assets before trying.

There are talks about making the mod standalone, so that players wouldn't need BF2142 in order to play it. It is something that we might actually be able to pull off, so who knows, maybe 2022 will be a year of better accessibility of Acheron. Either way, there are many parts of the mod that might be finished during this year, so there is a real chance that the Alpha build will see the light of day! :)

Thank you for continuing to work on this mod. I can't wait for the first version to be released! I certainly would appreciate if it was a standalone release. Love the work you've been showing, I just adore the dedication of some fans! In the only video I saw of the aliens, they are quite slow. IMO they need to be a lot faster, but for balance sakes, they can have less HP. And will the team be working on adding animations to the alien models or will it stay as it is? (I know that character animation is one of the hardest things so I'm not expecting it, just asking)

Thank you! :) I'll do my best to explore the possibility of a standalone release. As for the aliens - this issue has been brought up several times and you are right, they are quite slow. The problem is that the AI of BF2142 was made for shooting guns and moving from one CP to another. The bots are capable of sprinting but only in very specific situations such as running away from a grenade, moving out of the way of a vehicle etc. That's why I'm afraid their behaviour can't be altered too drastically. To make up for this, I'd like to make maps with tight areas and very few open spaces. The good thing is that once the bots get close enough to you, they'll lock onto you and won't stop sprinting/chasing you until they get you (you can still get lucky and use the environment to shake them off). Darker spaces with low visibility can also help a lot, so a proper map design will be a key factor here.
Good question about the animations. Although I never tried, I do believe that it should be possible to make a new skeleton with a tail to allow for more realistic movement and perhaps even tail attacks. Unfortunately, I don't think any modder of a Battlefield game has ever tried such a thing. I'd also like to make proper attack animations for the aliens eventually but it is important to mention that there are currently two people left in our team, of which I'm the only one actively working on the mod, so I'm afraid I can't really promise anything. :(

I'm sorry for the late reply, I just returned home from hospital a couple days ago. I'm not too familiar with the Free League RPG but if I'm not mistaken, the UPP is essentially a 22nd century union of the cold war communist countries? If so, then it sounds really cool and I'm definitely not opposed to the idea. That makes me wonder, how much are we told about the UPP in the Alien RPG?
I've also been thinking about having a mode where two marine factions fight each other in what would essentially be a military exercise. That way we could have symmetrical warfare with all the good stuff (tank battles, Cheyenne dogfights, etc.) despite only having one human team (at least until a new human faction like the UPP could be added).

The heart icon represents resuscitation (working the same way as defibrillators in Battlefield games). Sorry about the low resolution of some of the icons, this was just a quick concept I made in a couple hours to demonstrate how the customisation might work.
