Covenant IS good enough - it's just that fewer people went to see it.

Romulus, on the other hand, is the inferior film but it sold a buttload of tickets, so naturally that's the direction in which the studio wants to go.

It's all about profit. Nothing else.

Apart from making a lot more money, critical and popular opinion is that Romulus was a better film. I get that's probably not your take.

Rotten tomatoes, critic / user score:

Covenant 65 / 55
Romulus 79 / 85

So yeah I personally think Fede deserves this sequel and hope that it doesn't get hijacked for covenant 2.

If a Covenant/David followup does get rolled into the Romulus sequel, I really wouldn't see that as "hijacking." Fede himself is the one that expressed potential interest in furthering David's story in that fashion; it's not like anyone would be forcing his hand.

You're talking about the guy that already made a film that functionally does not work without the prequels' existence (and did so by choice), at that.

I personally don't ever want to see a follow up to Covenant. If we have to follow David once more, then I think it should post-Aliens. Throw a time jump in there, make A3 and A:R non canon while you're at it.

Hell, the Romulus followup could be post-Aliens for all we know.

I really don't expect Alien 3 or Alien: Resurrection to be decanonized any time soon. Not after Blomkamp's film was scrapped and Hill's treatment wasn't even looked at. I feel like there may have been a "break glass in case of emergency" box with Newt and an alternate "Alien 3" inside, in the event that Alien: Romulus had failed, but given Romulus' very apparent success now, I don't expect them to set out in that direction anymore.

I'm curious to what was in Hill's treatment.

You can't mess with the film canon. Aliens: Colonial Marines tried, and look at how that turned out.

But Alien 3 wasn't decanonized when ACM came out. Totally different thing.

No, but certain events were changed from the original film (Hicks not being in the cryotube, for one).

Right.. don't think anyone would disagree with you on that.
