We got the classic Winston design back in PREDATORS, and personally, I thought it was a boring choice. Plus, the guy couldn't even close his mouth. It's not always good to go back to the original.

keep the structure like the original design. Make the mouth the same even if it limits the range of movement. Then just tell a story visually. Add piercings, tattoos, cybernetic implants, different skins colors and patterns to make him an individual. Custom but recognizable armor for sure.

You can make the creature unique and individual without making it look like a different species or cloning Jungle Hunter.

P2 seems to be the only film in the series that understood this.

It was boring because it was them trying to replicate the first movie's design. There was nothing unique about it... but that's also not what anyone is saying to do here, there is plenty to build on with the original design. From different color pallets, piercings, garbs and headdresses/beading.


I remember in one of the AVP books, Machiko noticed a flag wrapped around the wrist of one of the Predators on the ship and I thought that was a neat concept for a trophy one took. They remind me of space pirates in that way.

Thank you, well said and I couldn't have explained it better myself. That's all it takes to create something new and unique without having to displace the iconic and original Winston design.

The Winston design is Predator. The variations are what makes each Predator unique not the overall design.

Also to add, the fact he couldn't close his mouth isn't due to the design rather the failure of the special fx team.

I grew up with the original films too, I'm happy to see new designs and different takes. Just give me some context and I'm in. A lot of fandom these days comes across like raging abusive narcissists, we don't own characters or franchises, we're an audience for them but we don't have any right to dictate how anything should be done.

I'm glad you enjoy the new designs and different takes, sincerely I do. I don't know if you are referring to  me as you put it as a, "raging abusive narcissist" because I have an opinion but as I've stated clearly, the point very simply is Winston's design is Predator, therefore everything else is just something else.

Winston's design established the Predator. That design is Predator.

That's what needs to be bought back, that's what we deserve to see again.

I was by no means speaking about you personally. I was speaking to larger issues in fandom in general. A sense of entitlement that empowers certain personalities who engage in abuse and harassment. People are allowed their opinions of course, but as an audience we have no right to dictate or control.

Predators would have been 50% better if the Classic Predator killed Mr. Black.

There's an argument to be had for different faces.

Like, how many people do you know who look exactly the same? Barring identical twins, I'd say not many.

You'll have certain friends/family/colleagues etc. who share similar traits, sure - but everyone is different. Eye shape, nose size/length, mouth shape, jaw, cheeks etc. All different and unique.

So I get where Prey has gone and, when looked at it in that regard it's a complete nonissue.

That said, it did feel like almost a different species when Feral was unmasked. To me he looked like he was more related to the Super Preds from Predators.  He was still awesome BTW! But after seeing the bone mask and how utterly incredible and cool that looked I think a more Winston-looking (or even inspired) Pred face would've been the cherry on an otherwise perfect cake!

I do think a lot of the wow factor comes from the masks, though. Like for 95% of any film (bar Predators w/captive) they are masked. And like Feral's bone mask, so long as that looks good - I don't have too much of an issue with what's underneath.

I would of preferred this as well. It just always feels like majority of Predator films always fall into that same repetitive trap where they consistently need to 1up the original Winston Predator with nonsense. Extra large jacked up teenage Predators or by adding 'Super' Predators, or an incredible Hulk Predator that seem to always kill the original design. Or simply just displacing the Winston design for something that is entirely unrelatable other than having mandibles and dreds.

Its predictably boring and a cheap way to Hollywoodize an original and established character in Predator. Meager attempts by filmmakers and studios at luring in a new audience which always seems to fail, giving fans a mediocre or terrible film. Imo I am glad Prey succeeded in breaking that perpetual problem but with it's success it did fail in its Pred design and in doing so segregated fans on what should just be irrefutable, objective verity - Winston's design is Predator.
