Starcraft Protoss seem like if Predator and Knight of Zodiac had a child. There are dreadlocks and laser blades in the design, plus some military breeds with cloaking ability (Dark Templar).

Although I would not be surprised if there is another source of inspiration behind

Yeah the Eldar "Striking Scorpion" aspect shrine is pretty overtly inspired by Predator.

There's also buckets and buckets of Giger in the Rogue Trader (1st edition) era Imperium artwork:

Wow that's pure Giger's nightmarish art legacy.

Adeptus Custodes

Speaking of 40k, I think this fan art would improve if...

it included the Kroot as the prehistoric past of the Predators!  ;D

Fun fact, the little figures on the conveyor belt are the thousands of psykers The Emperor devours each day to cling to life.

Cameron had the cast read it for research.  It's been a long, long time since I read it, but Cameron wasn't really pushing fascism in Aliens, so I think it was more for the tech and soldiering.

Yeah, there's really very little actual similarities between the two. Always found that "Aliens already made Starship Troopers" comment (I forget who said it, Cameron?) very strange.

Word is, Space Hulk was originally an Aliens game, but they couldn't get the rights (or it fell through, I forget), hence the flamethrower mechanics, "blip tokens", the Genestealers being redesigned to have a much more "Alien" aesthetic, and Space Marine Terminators being made of wet cardboard in melee despite being premier assault troops in the standard wargame. This also fed back into the core 40k game and is the origin of Genestealers having obscenely high melee skill.

I've also seen it said that Doom started life as an Aliens game they couldn't get the license to.

I can believe that. It'd be nice to try to confirm both/either.

It's not a secret that's exactly what Doom was.

It wasn't that they couldn't get the license, they just changed track after negotiations with Fox to get more creative control of the project.

Yep. Then, completely independently, the Aliens Total Conversion was made. It's a fanmade mod which makes Doom into an Aliens game.

There's obvious inspiration for Alien Trilogy in the Doom games as well.

It's always just skipped over in the history of Doom articles unfortunately. It usually warrants a sentence and that's it. I'd be really curious to know more.

I think it didn't go far. It was Romero I think who confirmed it; it kind of comes across as an idea they had, they spoke to Fox, realised they would have too many directions from outside sources and went with their own thing. Feels like there's not much of a story.

Would be happy to be wrong though, I love that game and its development.
