I thought that despite AvP2 being linear to a degree, there were enough off the beaten path elements of the game to give it way longer life than most fps. 

I loved finding the stuff with Eisenberg trying to survive Expedition 1, the loss of Pod 5,  and Blaney trying to hold together the survivors in the POC.  That kind of shit was fascinating to me, and I'd imagine scenarios of how it all went down. 

I always thought a game about the company trying to establish a foothold on lv1201 would've been fascinating, but alas.

You mean that hidden chestbursted Predator body with a shitload of skulls and a text log that you can find by backtracking the conveyor belt after turning off the power ? Its at 5:20:00.
