Yeah, I always figured the jockey was sort of symbiotically fused with the ship. The most he could do would be spin around in the chair, aiming for different stars.
A lot of its tech may not involve physically building but instead the ship may grow around him and birth it's cargo.
I haven't thought this through at all, but something along those lines, haha! Then again it probably shouldn't make total sense considering it's completely alien.
