Quote from: [cancerblack] on May 10, 2025, 11:50:31 PMWish you all the best in getting back on your feet @Acid_Reign161, and I'd like to echo what retro said.

And for clarity, blue is leaving the UK, I've been in New Zealand the whole time, but with prevailing attitudes and recent developments in the UK, now's the time for that move to happen, and in that direction rather than me heading north.

Ahh NZ! I was way off! 🤣 Yeah, sadly the political trends here are becoming quite sickening. 😔 It seems the clown leading the US has inspired other nut jobs around the globe to be more vocal than they'd have previously dared.

Quote from: BlueMarsalis79 on May 10, 2025, 01:19:30 PMI'm really really sorry Acid Reign, I'd thought you were doing well. Please message me on Discord if you want to talk. Same name as here.

You will make it through this no matter what it takes I believe that, I myself am moving country entirely, probably the hardest decision I have ever made, I will not miss the United Kingdom but I will miss the people residing in it.

It might feel like an impossible black hole right now, but you will make it out.

You know what's best for you, you've just got to have the courage to look it in the eye and know that you can do it.

Thanks Blue, I really appreciate that. I often forget about the AvPG Discord, I need to use it more. 😊

Side note; I didn't actually realise you were in the UK! (It seems there are a lot more of us on here than I initially thought; totally a missed opportunity for an AvPG (translation: Alien 3 🤣) watch party/meet/event) 😅 For some reason I non-consciously had it in my mind that you and Cancerblack were both stateside (no idea why!) I hope the move goes well for you guys! 😊

I don't belong anywhere. 😔

Brother... you are not undesirable. You are not behind. You are someone who is in the middle of rebuilding after a storm that would knock anyone down.

Have you looked at picking up a low-cost hobby until you've finished your phd? Preferably one that involves a bit of socialising? You don't have to make best friends right away, but some thread of social connection can make the difference. Bonus points if that hobby also helps improve your wellbeing (i.e. gym, walking groups, yoga classes). Remember, you are doing it for you, not anyone else. And if you make new mates on the journey, f**king ace.

Could a family member post your playstation down, or could you borrow an old console or laptop to reconnect with the lads on call of duty? Also, might be worth researching whether your university has access to mental health counselling or housing advice.

Try not to judge yourself for struggling. Surviving each day is something to be proud of right now. People cannot problem solve effectively when emotionally flooded. Start by giving yourself permission to not be okay for a while, then, when you feel ready, make yourself a plan. Maybe create a rough 6-12 month timeline with milestones (finish phd, apply for X jobs, save £Y)?

You are in the middle of a deeply painful transition, but it is a transition. It won't feel like this forever.

Thanks Retro, I really appreciate all of that - I did actually sign up to a 'Friends in Ely' group that seem to do regular meets to try and integrate/get to know others in the area... but then sat waiting for my intro post to be approved by admins for two weeks whilst events/meets came and gone. Whilst it's a quiet place, I did notice a tabletop games shop in town selling the Alien and Blade Runner RPGs, and they had adverts up for a number of groups (I'm guessing majority will be things like DnD, but might see if anyone is running an 'Alien' game... Ive bought soo many different RPG books over the years since I was a teen but never *actually* participated in any (usually due to not knowing anyone local into it) so might give it a shot. As for the PlayStation; I kind of accepted it wouldn't be coming with me (the room I'm staying in doesn't have a tv to use it on anyways) but I have my iPad/Macbook for a bit Alien Isolation/solitary gaming to tide me over... besides, if I get the PhD done by summer, there's Rogue Incursion on the way in September; I'm setting that as a goal to have things sorted/completed by and my usual setup 😊

Hey, just saw the updated post about tabletop stuff. Although Warhammer has a deserved reputation for being expensive, there's a wildly popular game mode called Spearhead that recently came out, which has free rules and only requires a single box of miniatures to play. The painting can be intimidating from the outside but is actually an incredibly good way to make friends, and the game itself is comparatively simple and well balanced. You should definitely give it a look.

Kill Team is also quite good if you prefer the sci-fi vibes over fantasy. Though it is quite a bit more complicated.

Thank you both for the recommendations! I used to play Warhammer 40k as a teen back in the day (Tyranids all the way! 😁) but it's deffo beyond my budget these days sadly 😅 I'll have a look into Soearhead and Kill Team! 😃

One game I do have that is still sealed and unplayed is 'Nemesis' - I've heard good things about it, but have yet to try it 😊

Well, I think the UK has been doing just fine at being terrible on certain things independent of what the US is doing - in fact, the Americans are now taking notes on bigotry from your government.

You know you're well and truly old with the excitement of your youth behind you when you get really excited for your new vacuum cleaner arriving in the post.

Absolutely.

It also bends so you can get it under the sofa easily.
