In the context of 80s action movies "macho" is pretty much about muscles.  Oiled up ones.  Not completely obviously (eg. Die Hard), but mostly.  In that regard Predator 1 and 2 were very different.

SiL

Predator 2 is post-Die Hard/Lethal Weapon macho.

SM

A kind of 'too old for this shit' at 41 kind of macho.

SiL

"I'll rise to the occasion but f**k I'd rather be on the couch having a beer" macho.

Arnold wasnt exactly young in Predator.

Experienced men seems a better choice to be able to win vs a Predator. Dutch is like 70 in PHG and only got better. If only that could be  the next movie.

SiL

Age isn't the issue at all.

To be fair, I'm not keen on anyone below 20 to take on a Predator. Stretching it to 18, depending of the character written is well done. After what The Predator has brought with Upgrade chasing after Roy, I'm not too keen on other stories of Predators chasing after kids again. That one comic with the 3D glasses was super silly as it is, but actually having it on the big screen? Yeah, I don't think so.

Besides that, yeah it really doesn't matter if early 20s or late 70s, long as you have the skill and the will, with a little bit amount of luck, there is a slim chance in succeeding taking down a Predator.

QuoteModern audiences wouldn't be able to cope with a film that goes as hard as Predator 2.  There will never set pieces that memorable, characters that big.

Predator 2 is mid at best, with cliched characters, average performances and its most memorable set piece lifted wholesale from a much better movie.

"hard"?  lol plz

Compared to modern action films, it does go hard.  From the Colombian shoot out madness to the Jamaicans raiding the guy's home.  The subway train scene.  It's just good, raw '90s action.

If you don't like it, that's absolutely fine but objectively the following three films are soft in comparison.

And it's an action film, the characters are always going to be a bit of a cliche.  This isn't high art, my man.

SM

It's not about liking it or not (I do like it, and yes it's not high art).  It doesn't even go especially hard by movie standards of the time. It's pretty standard dare.  Most Jason Staham vehicles go way harder than Predator 2 and there's four John Wick movies where a dozen people get shot in the face in every second scene.

Haha I do agree with you here.

For me I love the simple idea of dropping a Predator into different times in history and hunting the warrior/prey of that time.

Most importantly.. imo, the Predator should always follow the established and perfect base Winston design, then slightly altering the Predator design variations from film to film with the objective to keep the predators fresh and new while also staying true to the famous defining design - similarly to what was done with JH to CH. The design should be done correctly with practical effects alone, emphasis on the done correctly.

Also, the predator should remain shrouded in mystique and curiosity giving them the feeling of this unknown almost supernatural prowess and absolute overwhelming power. I don't want to know everything about them - less is more, just give me enough information to tell a good story.

We shall for sure get that with the animated movie that comes out before Badlands.

At a minimum, that sounds good.

Predator 2 actions are pretty brutal and mean, and more importantly, the right sound design and the pratical
effects is what make them so impactful. The sound design is so great , it feels like you could touch it.
You can watch it 100 times, it never gets old.

Yeah it's a classic for sure.
