He suffered a head injury after a motorcycle accident in 2011 and started getting arrested fairly frequently afterwards.

Guy clearly had brain damage and needed help. Unfortunately his landlady and her cat suffered because he didn't (couldn't, wouldn't, who knows) get it.

It's just a shitty, tragic story all round.

If this is true, and if he was fine prior, then this tracks. A man gets hit on the head hard enough, he might not be the same after. Essentially, he will find himself doing things that don't make sense. Does that excuse anything? No. Does that at least "explain" things? Probably, assuming this story is true.

He did also have drug dependencies, but his family was pretty desperate to get him psychiatric help after the incident and he kept refusing. He also refused an MRI.
