I think it's safe to say the flashback scene is back in the film with how much magazines have been pushing it.

There are many cypress in the alien city, I was right (Ridley is very familiar with tree symbolism). A bit of symbolism here and there. Like the overall look of the city (the shrine looks great), especially from this top perspective. I always expected that David will turn to be some kind of pseudo archvillain or better yet anti-hero of these movies. Only that is enought to keep me hyped, not to speak about everything else this movie has in store for us. Its obvious this kind of SF movies are not for all (even not for all Alien fans). I can now say with great certainty that Covenant is going to be one of my favourite alien related movies. Why are cypress important, well all things point that this city is the only inhabited place on the planet, why... well because its a sacred place, a sacred planet if you will. I think those pseudo engineer humanoids are some kind of priests.

It looks fantastic, but I still don't like the idea of David wiping out the engineers. And I hate how these engineers look. They look like sh*t compared to the engineers from Prometheus.

I think those are not the ordinary Engineers and I also believe this will NOT be the last
of those tall, muscular Engineers with black eyes. ;) Just my opinion.

Yeah, that shot doesn't make them look very good. They look like a lot of cranky, constipated old men from a retirement community that are mad because they ran out of prune juice.

Why don't you like David wiping out all the Engineers?

I completely agree with your description of these engineers.  :D

But I don't like David wiping them out, because it seems lazy. Like the filmmakers didn't know what to do with them, so they decided to just kill them. I mean, the engineers were such an important part of Prometheus, and I was looking forward to seeing them again in their home world. And then David comes by and kills them all.  :-\

Again, they probably are engineers. Multiple sources have said they're engineers, including people who worked on the movie. There is no proof that says otherwise.

Don't get me wrong, I really hope you're right. But they're probably just engineers.

I love that shot of the bombing scene! The city looks fantastic! It's just a shame it's not a Giger city. I know I've said that the production crew said these guys were Engineers and if that's the case, then I'm pretty disappointed in the make-up. I really liked how they looked in Prometheus. I guess Ridley didn't want this particular city to look threatening.

The architecture kind of reminds me a little of Morocco's "Red City".

There was actually one set report that mentioned they saw photo's of Jerusalem, and cities in Mexico and Morocco pasted up on the "war room".

Are the Engineers gathered for some sort of event in that domed structure or in response to the juggernaut showing up? It would be interesting if the former and David is making a statement ("I'm your God now"!).

Whoa, whoa there now. Hold your horses.

I would agree w/ SpeedyMaxx above us when he says that, whether we like it or not, this is what is happening to the Engineer story-line. Unless, they show up in the follow-up (to wrap into Alien). This gives me hope that we have not yet seen the last of the Engineers.

well chimps share similar dna to humans. .i am to lazy to go google the percentage exact. .but it.s like way up their. .and they all hairy and shit and they really don't look all that much like as either. .anyway i am sure their will be some explanation why they look like the way they do. .asuming they are even engineers. .just because the set designers called them engineers it does'nt mean they have privy to the entire plot of the movie. . . . And it would be stupid to asume that. .

Yeah, I can agree with this. There was a lot of interesting material that could've been explored. I would've liked to have seen David and Shaw working with the Engineers and then something happens to make David destroy them. I hoping we get some kind of reason for it. Which I'm sure we will.

Right... this isn't some new or different group. David and Shaw went to the Engineer's homeworld at the end of Prometheus, lo and behold we have a bunch of bald pale men wearing the same kind of stuff in that deleted Prometheus scene. The production designer says they're engineers. BTS they're called deadgineers. Its like they need a sign posted that says, "Welcome to the engineer homeworld! We were in Prometheus, directed by Ridley Scott!"

Anyway, they had to go at some point because the engineers are gone by the time of ALIEN. It could have been a lot worse than this. Maybe it would have been better if they were long extinct by the time David arrives but I'll settle for this sweet bombing scene.

No were does this show that David was the one who destroyed this race an engineer like creatures.  It looks more like he is a witness to this event not the destroyer.  I think there is much reading into this.

Could have been that David and Shaw was taken on board the larger ship and shown the power of the engineers power.  It could be that Shaw was taken by the engineer for the next movie and David was aboard on this dead world.

Just a thought. ???

Ridley isn't restricting his or anybody elses future vision for this series, btw. Even if this planet is what we think, so what? This race have seeded the universe, deliberately. And we are worried by what appears to be the plot of this movie tying the hands of future movies? It's one planet, no matter if it's historically significant.

If Ridley decides he wants another planet to be full of engineers just down the road in the future, he will do just that. Similarly, any future directors could do it no problem at all.

What would be awesome is that not only is this the planet covenant intended to colonize and the engineer homeworld, but when the whole thing backfires, i WANT it as a confirmed xeno prime homeworld. it would make logical sense, it being the homeworld and subsequent "birthplace" of the true xenomorph form, in place of the creators of the black goo.

Think Frankenstein's monster, except instead of a 6ft tall zombie, it's a genetically mutated killing machine.

I hope that's not a frozen piece of Branson Walter's got there. I'm definitely in the sabotage camp now. Most likely Oram will be responsible. It would be a bit too similar to Ash, but I doubt Oram is synthetic, considering he gets facehugged. You can sense the tension between Oram and Branson. In the prologue, when Tennessee asked who was going to say the toast, Oram turned and started to say something, most likely "I've actually prepared a few remarks" or something like that. He looked rather upset when Branson didn't even acknowledge him.

However man, this bombing scene is getting better by the day. It's also highly unlikely that these are the last engineers in the galaxy.

Maybe he kills them for Shaw. I get the feeling that as far as beings go, he's kind of fond of Shaw, or at the very least impressed with her tenacity.

1: Dead

2: Cryo

3: dropped off somewhere?

I don't think she'll stand for david killing them.... or would she? (it seems David is alone on the ship during the bombing)

Maybe he kills them for Shaw. I get the feeling that as far as beings go, he's kind of fond of Shaw, or at the very least impressed with her tenacity.

I agree maybe its all Shaw's plan???

However man, this bombing scene is getting better by the day. It's also highly unlikely that these are the last engineers in the galaxy.

Tell it to Ridley Scott.

Can you do an introduction?

Shaw did seem pretty angry at the engineers at the end of Prometheus.

She went all that way for *answers*  not to kill... then again maybe she changed her mind? who knows.

I am advocating nothing. The Engineers and the new mythology of Prometheus being wiped from the slate of future involvement is the last thing I wanted for this franchise's future. It is also what is happening and we knew that months ago.

You don't get it. I don't want it, but what I want is irrelevant. It's what's going down.

possibly Walter investigating Branson's death maybe he was murdered by Oram, and set up to look like an accident!!

Which would mean that the 4chan leaks are incorrect or they were changed in reshoots or maybe just maybe
Spoiler
after the explosion Walter investigates and finds a clue that Oram murdered him prior to explosion, or sabatoged his cryo so he couldn't free himself after the blast thus ensuring his death.

Common sense and the fact that there are zero mentions of anything like this in the many detailed spoilers we have on this film.

Let's try this: Say that I think Daniels will decide to give birth to the alien herself to get revenge on humanity for the

Actually the instrument that Walter is using seem to be in line with ones used to investigate like in those NCIS films... Secondly there is no scar on his face cause this particular scene obviously takes place before hell breaks loose, and judging by the background it looks like the cryo chamber.

Have I missed anything.. Remember your spoiler leaks were done before reshoots, and this could very well be a new addition.  ;)

So what? Walter may not even be in cryo at the beginning of the movie, a la David in Prometheus. He may be checking on the crew. He could be doing literally anything, but the point is there is no evidence of a subplot the likes of which you suggest.

Maybe I do. But it gets tiring to see posters jumping to insane and unrealistic conclusions about a movie that's already been well-spoiled. From the wild suppositions about the Engineers to this, it feels like people looking for any excuse to be less dissatisfied with what they've heard.

SpeedyMaxx, consistent combativeness against those who're sharing their thoughts and theories on the future stories of films they love and adore is lame. This is a place for discussion - not to constantly be told "no", "nope", and "not going to happen" because we let our minds wander. I really wish I had anything left to project. :P This is about what I know to be in it.

I expect the film to be a lot of fun and do well. It looks amazing and improves on the prior one in many ways already. Creatively I feel disappointed by it. But I've expounded on that already so I won't again. What I will say is it's equally exhausting to hear people willfully avoid the facts we know to be true to avoid honestly engaging with the actual material and what we know it contains. But I'm done talking about it.

For the 99th time: They are the Engineers and Ridley Scott is doing away with that storyline.

For the 99th time that's conjecture on your part.

Is anybody else getting a feeling there might be some Planet of the Apes type scenario going on (the original movie)?

Think of the "engineers" from Prometheus as humans nearly destroying their own ecosystem/society (no birds, no animals) and the "engineers" we are presented in Covenant as the survivors of this all, who just begun evolving from the ashes of this downfall. The city itself might be a combination of parts of the old culture and new elements build around.

Thats why when David arrives with the flying saucer (and i bet he is the one in control of that flying scorpion tail too) they are all drawn to the arenaesque plaza, cause they only seen anything like it on murals or heard of it in legends. Thats why they have no defence or anything like it either, or maybe the "have", but none of them is able to control what is left of something like a planetary defense system etc.

Or maybe they have seen things like that, maybe they even have build temples around it, but now for the first time they actually see one of it flying.

Passage of time then explains their different look. No longer being a space nation :D and no longer being able to use the biomechanical attachments their bodys began to look less bulky (gravity), thinner (roooids) and they are not that pale anymore either, cause they actually have to leave their house to put food on the table.

I was thinking the same thing. What we see of the Engineer civilization "today" is the culmination of some sort of catastrophic event from the past that caused the turning on/loss of technology and reverting to a simpler life. I mean, the Engineers as we know them could be the "gods" of this group. Mythical almost. It would explain David's actions. He's dealing with "fallen angels" who retain the potential for past exploits.

Yeah, I think the Engineers having been cross-bred over the millennia into hybridizing with the species they once seeded is actually an interesting idea worth thinking about or exploring onscreen in a proper cosmic epic story. But knowing Ridley it's something he'd toss off in an interview or a line on the commentary track as we watch David nuke 'em.

"They don't deserve to start again, and I'm not going to let them."

Is that quote confirmed? Would definitely fit.

QuoteHe's dealing with "fallen angels" who retain the potential for past exploits.

There might be more Prometheus to Covenant than one think: if what you assume is true these beings have re-established a condition for their society one could call Paradise-like. But instead of leaving them alone, God is punishing them again for quite literally creating mankind, just like Prometheus is being subjected for eternal punishment.

Predaker reminded me in the other thread (which, yikes) that David was apparently referring to humanity with that line - i.e., humanity starting out in the stars, colonizing with the Covenant.

But the idea of the Engineers being reduced to the quasi-agrarian society suggested in the pictures as a kind of analogy for divine punishment is a very interesting idea.

Ah ok, but humanity isnt really re-starting, arent they? Unless ok he means the process of seeding life, which they somehow repeat by colonizing okok.. But that would definitely imply that David makes no difference in agency when it comes to engineers/humans. Humans then deserve to die because their "fathers" have ++++ it up millenias ago, and they dont get their own take on things.Thats in line with the mythical approach i guess.

My (limited) understanding is that he's referring to the Covenant expedition, which I think the crew has said is the first deep-space colonization project. Much has been made in the trailers, the Last Supper, the promos etc. of this being humanity's next big leap forward, starting a new 'life' in the frontier, a new future for humanity, etc etc. David's comments appear to be a response to that.

I think he's also accounting for his own experience with Peter Weyland, who he loved/hated and who I think is his basis for how he views humans.

Here is more of the dialogue that goes with that quote from David.

Spoiler
"The gods have rejected mankind as cruel, weak and full of greed," ... "They are a dying species, grasping for resurrection. So they are leaving the earth forever."

He continues, "But their power is an illusion. They don't deserve to start again, and I'm not going to let them."

Thanks for the quotes, Predaker.

Come to think about it, i really wonder if David perceives himself as a sort of lifeform, the only one worth existing no doubt. But wouldnt it then be more logical for him to try to replicate himself, rather than experimenting in the biological camp again (just like the engineers did). He obviously doesnt consider himself as being imperfect at all and with all the technology surrounding him he sure should be able to produce more Davids? I mean if weak cruel dying decadent humanity could build him..

Okay, I see.  However, to the best of my knowledge, I haven't actually dismissed anybodies thoughts, nor have I been insulting in conversation (certainly not in recent memory, at any rate) but okay, fair enough.  Duly noted.
