This Day In History: February 28, 2023

The TED Conference of 2023 in Long Beach, California hosts Sir Peter Weyland to discuss Weyland Industries' plans for the future.

Hmmm.... I just rewatched the TED Talk for the first time in a few years, and in it Weyland mentions that we are three months into 2023, which would imply March. I used Wayback Machine to look and see what it's listed as there, and it actually cites it as being yesterday's date, February 27, 2023, on there: https://web.archive.org/web/20131017002338/http://www.weylandindustries.com/tedtalk

Where did the February 28 date originate from?

While there is a little discrepancy in the dates associated with the video, the viral/official Weyland Industries Timeline webpage, now defunct, but copied to other blogs and websites lists it as Feb 28, 2023. http://www.weylandindustries.com/timeline
This is listed in the Corporate Timeline section of the website

*See the second link in my original post for a direct copy of the information on the Strange Shapes blog.

There are mentions of Feb and March so I went with a date from the site somewhere in the middle.

Does he mention his uncle who got lost in the Antarctic?

The best Weyland by far was Lance.

At least he was charismatic

Guy Pearce's Peter Weyland's better, outside of Prometheus itself ironically.

Barely a character and terrible old man make up vs Lance's voice...no contest.

Peter was nearly a bond villain with his motivation and how he treats Vickers. No subtlety. Also makes me think of Mr Burns from the Simpsons.

Lance Henrikson comes across like he might be dodgy but turns out he wants one last adventure and doesn't know about any creature a etc so no hidden agenda which I found refreshing.

Lance playing Charles undermined his appearances in Aliens and AlienĀ³ to me even as a kid, made the universe feel like comic book schlock, akin to Star Wars where we can not get away from lineages.

His performance was fine, but has not stuck in my head on loop for a decade like the Peter Weyland TED Talk, and that prologue in Alien Covenant might be the single best scene in the franchise just by itself.

Another point against AVP's Weyland: He isn't a piece of shit. Call me crazy, but I don't want a likable/sympathetic founder of the company that goes on to become Weyland-Yutani.

True, Prometheus and Covenant are really great in that unlikable regard (for all characters for that matter)

I think it's an interesting juxtaposition of how a benevolent creator's creation can spiral out of control and become an inhuman monster over time.
