Yeah, Drutt. Also, a sentient skull named Boni.

I remember Berk from this. Which I found out a long time later was a TV show.

Dark Horse had their fair share of misses. Marvel has a higher proportion thus far though.

There were way more hits with dark horse.
Outbreak, nightmare asylum, genocide, destroying angels, rogue, salvation, dead orbit, defiance...lovesick 😏
I think 80% of what dark horse did ranged from pretty good to fantastic.

Yeah 80% is fair.  But they were doing it for the better part of 30 years. We can hope that Marvel could reach those levels over time. Not really covering themselves in glory just yet though.

Also Lovesick is pretty cool. 😎

Just finished reading this.  It's the first ever Aliens comic that was laugh out loud funny.  I knew people would lose their marbles over the grenade, and it is a goof up.  No question.  It could have easily been fixed as there was no shortage of explosions rocking the atmosphere processor leading up to the explosion.  Alas, it is what it is.

What most people are missing here is that Burke is a narcissistic psychopath.  They are characterized by not being able to distinguish right from wrong.  They can't tell when they did something wrong, and they don't understand why someone is upset at their actions.  Did them it's just a "bad call".  Oops.

They absolutely nailed the psycho-pathos which characterizes Burke quite well.  He is capable of sweetness, and tenderness and completely oblivious to the evil he does.  I think we all know people like that and not all of them are killers.  But if they were, they wouldn't carry any guilt around.

Great fun story if you overlook some continuity errors.

Burke absolutely knows right from wrong - which is why he tries to hide his mistakes and shits himself when they're uncovered.

The Burke in the film is an opportunist.  He's capable of killing people as long as he can rationalise that he was only indirectly involved. HE didn't kill the colonists and Ripley and Newt - the Aliens did.

The Burke in the comic was completely muddled - misunderstood or a greedy, selfish piece of shit? He's the latter mostly.

Even before he is discovered he is sweating like crazy when turning off the cctv monitor. Desperation and opportunity pushed him further but he certainly knew it was wrong.

You know, aside from the continuity gaff of the grenade in the first issue, I actually really enjoyed this run. Not one I'll be revisiting for any lore, but just a genuinely funny and enjoyable comedic take on Aliens that doesn't feel like a parody of itself. It somehow did a good job at making Burke mildly likeable.

Exactly.  It's an all new level of horror.  Not only are we placed in the uncomfortable position of rooting for the bad guy, but also we can't avoid laughing.  It's like being tickled while trying to navigate a serious topic.  Super clever.

I'm still not convinced that he's not a psychopath, despite some solid arguments here.  There are levels of understanding.  Burke knows on a conscious level that he is doing wrong, but that does not superimpose upon his subconscious.  His subconscious only thinks what he is doing is wrong, if he is caught.  In the movie, he is devoid of empathy and that is a key indicator.  On the flip side, in the new comics, he does have some twinges of empathy, but it is not deeply rooted.

I never once rooted for him the comic. Nearly everything he did was self serving.

Spoiler
Right down to telling his daughter should couldn't leave because her lungs wouldn't work on Earth. It was almost at a point where his 11th hour conversion didn't really make much sense.

What if the Derelict could actually survive the explosion? After all it was made with Alien technology. Maybe the eggs on board would be shielded?

More recent sources have reported it destroyed.
