That is actually a disturbing fate given the optimism at the end of Prometheus.
Its very clear now. David despises Humanity and wishes to wipe them out. He is the Engineer in the Derelict who plans to nuke Earth with the Eggs but gets chestbursted. Its the "Creator vs Created" cycle. David ends up having a taste of his own medicine. However, his legacy lives on. He is the heir to the throne of Weyland-Yutani. David's android brothers got the signal and went for the hunt to continue the legacy of their King. This leads us to ALIEN. Perhaps, in the future, Alien 5 will feature Blade Runner crossover. The new trailer shows the same theme: Creator vs Created. These programmed Humans will join the fight with the androids. Alien Runner could go a darker route. The androids ally with the cloned humans and harvest them as hosts for Aliens. Anyways, food for thought but this is where Alien is heading. Brace yourselves.
It's just so tacky that they reduced Noomi's role to this. Even tackier than the story turn itself.

When we finally get the set visit reports being released, it was something a couple of the outlets mentioned. A piece of artwork where she looked like Li. I can't remember which off-hand (maybe JoBlo?) but I'm sure it was definitely mentioned.

As is the case in most backstage pictures. The alien is in the original alien was obviously a man in a suit. The props looked out of place. That is the whole point of cinematography and instilling the right ambience for immersion through angles, lighting, effects, etc not just during the shoot but post-production.
At this point people are just complaining to complain. Of course it looks fake, it is fake! Watch the movie and see how they transform this stuff on the screen. It's cinematic magic. If it looks bad on screen, sure complain, but until then, whining about a prop looking like a prop is silly.
One thing I hope to get ouf of this are the sketches by David in the upcoming art book. Hopefully.
But what the hell is he doing with the Engineers? Especially with the two heads fused together...

I noticed this thread and decided to register and clarify some things. Janus is correct about

Shaw's face in close-up frame in the movie. Her face in that close-up was normal, without tubes and alien stuff like in the pic in this thread.
I also want to notice that I saw the movie a few days ago on early screening on Kiev's Comic Con. While reading some reviews after watching the movie, I was surprised to see many conflicting descriptions and opinions about the movie, like me and my audience saw a very different movie from the one english/american press saw. It's really strange.
HBO posted a short vid on youtube. The sketch shown near the end looks...different from what we see here. I won't get into specifics, but there is a stark difference from the nose down. What gives? Is this not what we see in the movie then?
The BTS photo of Shaw is definitely real, but I do think that the version seen in the film looks a little bit more like Noomi Rapace though. This one seems to lack the hair. We don't know when this photo was taken so it's quite possible it was tweaked further during filming. In the finished version, the hairdo is more distinctive and CLEARLY Shaw and I don't recall the eyes being open. I could've sworn they were closed. As Hicks said, the shot is brief. So I will definitely be watching this scene a lot closer when I see it again the 18th.

Shaw's face will not be so damaged
The sketch was far more gruesome than what is shown here, and also resembled the actual character much more closely. I'm starting to wonder if the film has been toned down or altered for certain markets. Or possibly, additional/different material held back before widespread release. That would definitely be a surprise twist.

I'd like to ask other people who saw Covenant what they think about this: in all reviews/reactions, no matter positive or negative, I've never met a mention about the fact that the film transforms from serious tone into dark comedy and self-parody in the second half of the second act - parts of the third act. There are some scenes, where Ridley clearly makes fun of Alien and these scenes were very much WTF moments and audience reactions at my screening were loudly the same. It reminded me of Alien: Ressurection, but Jean uses his French sense of humor and Ridley uses his own. I wasn't happy with these tone changes and many people at my screening too. I expected a serious movie which makes Alien scary and serious again, but what I saw wasn't what reviews/Ridley/marketing promised. But critics seem to be okay with it or they just don't care.

I found the scene to be very effective. It was heartbreaking. It would've had a stronger impact though if they had left in the footage from the prologue. It would've been great to see her alive in the film before the big reveal.

They can just clone her once Wal-Mart (who buys out Wetland-Yutani before the events of Alien Resurrection ) sends a ship hundreds of years later and finds some Shaw DNA frozen in a capsule by David.
Because if what you guys are saying about Covenant having a comedic tone to it is true, then to hell with it. That shit is one of my chief complaints of Alien: Resurrection. This franchise won't just be overcooked but rather overcooked, digested and violently shat all over the walls of 20th Century Fox.

they should have done this to somebody else than Shaw. what the fuzz man.
Why not have waterston instead? ah , because she's supposed to be this movies 'ripley' offcourse. cheap shot, really.
but why on earth not add some other character, that has been through less? some 'replaceable' female character that runs into david. yeah, too short of time.
but then how about the covenant finding the distress signal from somebody else, and that david has sent a signal to earth to send someone before, and that happened just moments before covenant's trip so they don't know much about that but simply recieve a distress signal.
you could have divert it just as much, and save Shaw for some other role, where she can get a little redemption. It doesn't need to be 'deeply sad' to work. It also would have opened for an interesting additional movie for the ship that went to david's message to send meat before.

then again, we can't say Shaw doesn't want this for herself for whatever reason or reasoning happenening during the time spent there.
on the other hand then, we aren't guaranteed something bad doesn't happen to shaw. does SHE get infected accidentally - her own fault?
does she get facehugged? why did the juggernaut crash, and what happened to her?
did she get gravely wounded? was she undoubtedly going to die, but did david know or tell her he can 'save her' 'at a cost' ? did he administer the stuff to save her thus?
she looks rather dead on that HBO bookpage, and then we see the prop/head with the stuff aside the heads just like the amazing concept art, so i'll assume that's later? though imho what i find odd is that the hbo page picture looks like she's missing her lower jaw, and theres something weird there, so i find it odd that the prop then has a complete jaw whilst looking more advanced and 'further developed' ?
either way she's scr*wed. here's hoping they'll have a way to bring it in an acceptable, satisfying way.
i don't want this sadeness on this great character.

I am 99% certain what we see in the film is different, her head looks almost normal and she has all her big red hair, her torso though is completely open. Put it this way when I saw the image in this post I was like, why didn't they use that prop in the movie. She also 100% had her eyes closed, because I remember thinking she might be alive and open them - which would have been an amazing scene

Just wanted to add something to this thread regarding Shaw from Alien Covenant, based on what I recall seeing:

While much of the first description given is mostly correct, from what I remember Shaw DOES have something attached to the sides of her head and neck. Like bones but oddly shaped, very different from humans, but nothing boimechanical. It's not the same as in the leaked picture, Shaw has more hair, her eyes were definitely closed and she was dead, plus it also looked like she is lying on a headrest of bones and possibly flesh, which may or may not be attached to her, but I couldn't tell. Then the camera then pans down to reveal her torso that's been pulled wide open as also mentioned earlier. Also, the drop shot with the alien climbing down a wall towards its next victim, with someone lying on a slab nearby and chest pulled wide open, this is Shaw as well and not an Engineer as some have thought.

Walter finding her body on the table, with her chest/abdomen wide open. I don't remember anything attached to her head, but her head/face was intact. Clearly dead.
The only other time we see her, was a drawing of her in a similar state in one of David's sketches that Daniels finds.

Having seen it a few hours ago, I can see the point they are making. It's certainly not an intentional parody, but there are probably one too many scenes/tropes that have been used in at least three other films in the franchise.
