Title: Aliens Epilogue
Post by: friendlyskies on May 22, 2009, 05:53:21 PM
Hi all

I was invited onto the board by Cpl Hicks to promote a new fan film that myself and other fans are currently working on.

Entitled - Aliens Epilogue, a website has been set up for people to keep up to date with how our progress is going. The site is only a couple of weeks old and all constructive crticism and suggestions are welcome on improving it. I've kept it fairly simple and easy to navigate as I think that's sometimes the best thing.

Website can be found at

Aliensepilogue.com (http://aliensepilogue.com)

THe project is a little over a year in the making now since principal photography began. And about 6 months of pre-production prior to that. I thought it was about time to start promoting it a bit.

There should be enough info on there to answer a few questions, if anyone wants to ask anything else please feel free to do so and again all comments are welcome.

Cheers

Darren

What's the story behind it?

I don't want to give too much away about the story line to be honest, it's only a 'short' film anyway  ;) but the main reason I decided on the final plot was to bridge the gap between Aliens and Alien3 if that gives you any clues

Cheers

I'm looking forward to seeing the "Alien".   ;)

Is the Alien the same style/species from Aliens or based on another film or a new design?

Also the design of the patches with the bio weapons/triotech logo look great!

The Aliens will mostly be the same as the ones used in Aliens. The suits are fan owned so there is a bit of a mixture. At the moment we have 2 or possibly three of the most commonly available one based on the Aliens design.  We have an original Alien War suit. Another Aliens style one but with a few owner/sculptor created personalisations may be available. I have yet to actually film very much with the Aliens themselves. Most of their scenes are more complex to shoot and willl probably be the majority of what we film on the final shoot. I'm hoping that in total we should have about 7 or 8 suits available for the shots requiring multiple Aliens on camera at once.

The guy who designed the patches is a very talented chap and never ceases to amaze me with his willingness to put time and effort into some of the smaller details of the film but quite often I think that all those small details can add a lot more to a film than people tend to think.

Thanks for the comments.

Cheers

I for one am really excited by project. This is the website for people interested - http://friendly-skies.co.uk/aliensepilogue/

It looks really good. Am very impressed with the use of helicopters for the dropship cockpit.

Thanks for the kind words everyone.

Thanks to my job, I come across alot of places/locations that I have been able to use for filming after building a professional relationship with the people that work there. I got a couple of odd looks when I asked about filming there though lol

The helicopters especially would never have happened if it weren't for my job. I'm glad that we have finally finished all the dropship cockpit scenes. I have cut them togeher roughly and used shots of the dropship from the film to see how the scenes play out and I'm very happy with it.

Mike Rush, has started building a CG 3D model of the new dropship and hopefully I've got someone on board now to do all the CG environments for it work in.

Will keep the site updated for those interested.

Thanks again

Darren

I noticed on your website you've got a new patch art for the dropship with a bull dog. Why did you decided on that and not the original bug stomper design?

I'd imagine its probablt to signify a different squad from the one in Aliens. After all not all military squads will have the same badges and stuff...

Hi

Dachande is right.

If you watch the second movie you will notice that there was different nose art on both of the dropships and that was within the same squad. The one they went down to LV426 in had the "Bugstomper" artwork and the one that they bring down on remote had the "Smartass" art on it.
I looked at it as something similar to the nose art you used to get on the old B52 bombers etc of ladies and what not and something that would be unique to each dropship. I wanted something on this one that would symbolise the fact that they are a British contingent and the Bull Dog seemed like a natual choice.

Thanks for making this a Sticky Hicks. Much appreciated mate.

I'm off to DragonCon in Atlanta tomorrow :) and will hopefully be arranging the final shoot (or at least the penultimate one lol) whilst I'm there. Won't be filming in the U.S. though, can't quite afford that. Just happens that someone I need to speak to will be there also luckily.

Once I'm back I will be looking for someone to do some concept pieces for the film to enable the CGI to get underway. Mostly pics of the Dropship approaching Gateway, over the lab facility, that sort of thing. I will post a HELP WANTED thread in due course though. Be good to tap some of the talent that's out there on these boards.

Thanks for all the interest and the nice comments. Hope you will all enjoy this once it's completed.

Cheers

Darren

Hi All

Sorry for the complete lack of updates on here.

We shot some footage back in September but due to some technical issues most of it was not usable (infact not even on the tape lol !!!) There are some photos of the shoot  here

http://friendly-skies.co.uk/aliensepilogue/Images/Shoot%20Photos/Galleries/NSC%20Sept%2009/index.html (http://friendly-skies.co.uk/aliensepilogue/Images/Shoot%20Photos/Galleries/NSC%20Sept%2009/index.html)

I'm currently in the process of trying to scout out a final location for the vast majority of what is left to be filmed. I'm looking for somewhere in England, preferably no further North than Birmingham which has a lot of industrial looking/ sci-fi (if you will) corridors. Think Hadleys Hope in terms of width of and height of corridors but not as fabricated looking as that. It needs to blend with what we have already filmed. Brickwork walls are OK as long as there is machinery/ pipework etc which gives it the look we are after. We can always dress the sets up of course, which we will, but are limited on that by where we end up filming.

This is proving difficuilt, not so much finding somewhere but finding somewhere that is free to film in and that is located conveniently for everyone involved in the project.

We are aiming to film most of what is left around February next year and the final few scenes in the first half of the year.

The release date of Summer 2010 is now looking to be too optimistic but having thought about it we've decided that 2011 might be a nice time to release it anyway as it will give us plenty of time for the CG work and is also the 25th Anniversary of Aliens of course :)

The friendly skies' site for the upcoming Aliens: Epilogue site has been down for some time now.  Does anyone have any idea what happened?  It certainly looked promising, and is a shame that it just up and disappeared the way it did.

Unfortunately not. It's been far too long since I last saw Brian (Bugz). The filming is mostly down in the South of England and as such quite some way out of Bri's way lol. Although, if you happen to be down this way this weekend mate, I could always use another Alien :)

I recently started a face book page for the short film. Figure I should probably try and get with the times and do the things that seem to be expected now lol. Not going on Twitter though, can not understand that at all, must be getting old.

Anyway, please feel free to become a fan at the face book page

Will hopefully have photos up from our last shoot soon.

Have been doing rough cuts of the scenes that we filmed and it's all looking good at the moment.

Just one more shoot to go and then I REALLY need to get started on organising all the CGI stuff.

Appreciate the thought mate. Don't sweat it though, we'll get there :) I should be buying most of the materials for the final set in the next couple of days and hopefully start construction in the next week or two. Hoping to be filming the final scenes in July or early August at the latest.

Have recently been working on a new trailer. Less than a minute long but I'm hoping to get the footage colour corrected/graded before I release so it more closely resemebles how the final film will look. This is not something I did with the first trailer I released as I was more interested, at the time, in just giving people a look at what we were doing.

Will post a link when it's done though.

Cheers

The costumes, props and Aliens all easily look the best I've seen in a fan film, but the camera work and lighting doesn't look terribly exciting.

But I'll still watch it for the costumes, props and Aliens.

This. That quick shot of the alien through the grating was boss, though.

It's set between Aliens and A3. Is supposed to answer some questions from A3 about the egg. Is due to release some point later this year. They're aiming for premiere at a Sci-Fi event in Leicester. Will be more info in the next podcast.

Yeah, i think if they would have spent some of the cash they have, if they did have cash, on a better camera this would have been perfect because everything else is great. Some of the guns looked small but bleh, the rest was pretty good.

The music doesn't really fit at all. The music convey's suspense yet the video's showing us something else.

I think it's the style of camera used that's giving it the off look also. It's got that cheap ass "doctor who" feel about it.

Regardless , props to the guy's involved, it's still impressive.

Hi guys

Nice to see the trailer is generating discussion :)

To respond to some of the comments about the "look" of the footage.
The film was shot in standard definition on mini DV.
As many of you will no doubt know, this is hardly ideal. However, when production began this was all that was available to us.
Then came the almost overnight revolution of DSLR cameras. If we were beginning this now, we would no doubt choose to use something like a Canon7d or similar but it simply wasn't an option back when we started.
As a result we haven't achieved the cinematic look that we'd all like too see since mini DV doesn't lend itself to colour correction particularly well and the camera didn't allow for depth of field which would also have helped achieve a better look.
Money being no object, we would have hired a different camera but unfortunately money is always a definite object lol.

That said, if we were ever to film something else along these lines we would definitely go with a better camera now since you can hire them pretty cheaply or even to buy one now isn't ridiculously expensive. But it wouldn't have made sense to switch to a DSLR part way through production as the footage would have been so different from the early stuff that we'd have had to refilm everything and that simply wasn't an option.

Constructive criticism is welcome and helpful. I'm hopeful that when released people will enjoy it for what it is. Although I realise that you can never please everybody.
All the guys that worked on this have put a lot of time and effort into it and we've all learnt a lot during the process. If we were to refilm everything and start again now, would it be better, certainly. But of course that's not going to happen. They'd all probably kill me if I said I wanted to reshoot the whole thing lol.
I personally have gained a lot of experience from this and will use that to make our next film even better.

Cheers

Darren

That is a nice simple answer :) but it isn't the one we've gone with. Still gone for a fairly simple explanation mind you. Maybe we could make that into a competition. If people want to send me their theory on how the egg got there and the person who gets it closest to our version will win a copy of the film on DVD when finished. We couldn't announce the winner till the film is released of course :)

QuoteAs many of you will no doubt know, this is hardly ideal. However, when production began this was all that was available to us.

I know exactly how you feel.  I've been trying to finish a Star Wars fan film for years that was shot on miniDV.  It wasn't so much the format it was shot on, but the camera angles the director and DP used.  Some of it was restricted due to extensive green screen use (ie. you can't use a low angle and shoot up because the green screen wasn't high enough.  nor could you shoot down on a subject because what was used  for the floor was a green sheet that was badly lit and wrinkled making compositing excrutiating).

However the location stuff was often shot in the same unexciting fashion.   And a lot of fan films fall into the same trap.  There's so much to think about for so few people, that cinematography often gets left off as long as what is captured is in focus.

I found colour correcting can make things a bit more dramatic, and is relatively simple.  I changed a bunch of scenes to a red tint to simulate emergency lighting which worked quite nicely.

I just received a message from Darren Kemp, the man behind the upcoming Aliens Epilogue and he's recruiting CG animators:

"More talent required for Aliens Epilogue production. We are looking for people to light and animate models that have already been made by Andrew Glazebrook and SanchiEsp for the production. You can see the models in the CGI design section on our website at Aliensepilogue.com. We need people using 3DS Max 2010 or later. This is a no pay gig but you get to be part of the production and will be invited to the Premier at the National Space Centre in Leicester, UK."

If anyone is interested you can contact Darren via the website, Facebook or our forums.

Fantastic. Loved all the little references to the films. I think my favourite was the "In the pipe, 5 by 5" one, and the ensuing exchange of dialogue. The CGI was really well done, too.

Just great. Glad this has finally been released. This deserves a spot on the newsfeed.

I was really impressed by the visuals and really liked the use of some classic props. Let me rephrase that actually: The visuals in this were friggin' amazing! One thing I would've liked more of was the Alien 3 "special forces" characters at the end though. We didn't see much of them in Alien 3 and we saw even less of them here! More of that would've been stellar.

Also, another thing I have to say is that if anyone remembers the fan film "S.E.E.D" a while back then they have to remember that its sound was absolutely awful, at least the version that I saw. Some of the characters were completely inaudible/incomprehensible. This was much better, much more consistent. I think there was still kind of a lack of foley recording and there should've been ADR, but it still sounded miles better than S.E.E.D, which constantly patted itself on the back for being of professional quality.

Great job to the filmmakers and congratulations on the release!

Just watched this over on AXP, so copying and pasting.

It suffers from the problems that plague every fan film.  Script needed a good edit to reduce the exposition and stuff lifted straight from Aliens (even taking the 'You know you don't need to say all that' gag into account), editing needed to be a lot tighter, acting from people who aren't actors.

But that said, the main characters (ie. the marines) all had a goofy charm - especially Kemp.  The CGI was generally pretty good, particularly Gateway.  But what made this not only the best Alien fan film, but one of the best fan films of any franchise - is the costumes and the hardware.  All first class.

Very enjoyable overall.

I thought the attempt to connect Aliens and Alien3 was the probably weakest aspect.

But it was kinda the point and they did put it on front street, so can't complain too loud.

I've been waiting for this since I heard about it and I was not disappointed. Great story, great props, and good humor when needed; I especially liked the convo about Hudson's armor. The only thing that I could say that might have needed work was the acting; good lines, but a little too dry on delivery. But all-in-all, a great fan film, excellent work!

Certainly a worthy fan film indeed. My only gripe was the acting, very band and no motivation. CGI was the best I've seen in a fan film, and the effects were all blended nicely. Over all I give this one a 8 out of 10. If the acting had a been a bit more convincing, I would have enjoyed it alot more.

I think everyone seems to have conveniently forgotten about Redemption. That sorta set the benchmark for fan films and CGI.

There was some nice touches here. General story, camera work, editing, sets, a lot of effort went into it. Marine costumes, weapons were good. The alien costume was alright apart from the teeth but it's difficult to compare this fanfilm to SEED. The human story is better here but the aliens didn't get much screentime. There was a lot more creature stuff in SEED even if the action was a bit chaotic, they put a lot of work into the costumes. I don't think you can deny that. As already said, I wish more effort had gone into the delivery of lines. Some of the guys were quite good but more often than not, they may as well have been reading the lines off of their hand. But overall, it's one of the better fan films we've seen in this franchise.

I'll jump in and agree with mostly everyone but I'll be more blunt. That acting was shitty. I think Trevor Steedman looked like the only person who actually cared and tried to put effort into interpreting a character. Everyone else was just meh. I came to the realization when the marines were lining up and the sergeant is saying things that a sergeant might say, that Apone might have said, but basically mumbling it. No attitude, no intensity, just....bblllllaaaahhhh.

But again, the movie looked great. Even if it didn't know the Aliens as much as SEED, SEED is absolutely horrible. It doesn't even look that great. The costumes were good but it was shot horribly. This actually had a bit of effort in that department.

I think with the actors though...people try too hard to use friends and family and whatnot. You don't know how easy it is to find aspiring actors who will work for free. They just want their image out there and they want people to know their name and that they can perform, it's not that hard.

A fan film that's AvP related.

No one tries hard to use friends and family.  There's just the convenience of having people you already know and can get along with, without taking up extra time to audition people.  Plus it's likely these people 'get' what you're trying to do over trying to explain it to strangers.

Obviously it's better to use actual actors - but if they suddenly get a paying gig or an audition for a paying gig; there's a good chance they're going to do that over your non-paying gig, despite the fact you have a bunch of crew standing around waiting for them (also not being paid) and you're spending your own money to stage the whole thing.

I will shortly find out if dodgy acting can be improved with ADR....

AVP Redmeption link Huddo - here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J0nLUYFc0H4#).

Had another look.  I remember now why I didn't finish watching it.  It's very dark.  Not AvP:Poo dark, but there's a lot of stuff with low light which gets irritating.  Anyway watched the whole thing.  It's main problem is the Alien acid has the pH of weak tea.  And Predator can slice up Aliens with gay abandon with nary a drop of acid getting anywhere near him, and dead Aliens don't miraculously cause hull breaches - even when a PredAlien is felled in what appears to be the main hangar and therefore the lowest deck on the ship.  When it turns out theres another deck below - STILL the acid does f**k all.   That aside, it's  extremely well done.

I'm not really a fan of Alien epilogue.
Props are awesome but cinematography is totally absent.
And Cinematography is the most important since even non-paid film can looks really beautiful.

i agree. i found lots of moments in which i thought "this could use a low angle or a continuous sequence", that shouldn't happen.

Watched AvP Redemption, probably had the most polish of a fanfilm I've seen (alien/predator wise) although some of the 3D was a bit inconsistent.

And I'm tired of credits that scroll up for 3 minutes with the same 5 names listed. If you get that much of a boner seeing your own name spelled out just write it on the wall 50 times. Other than that good.

I'd probably rank them:

Redemption
Epilogue
SEED

Where was the first showing of this? The Aliens convention or earlier?
Title: Re: Aliens Epilogue Released!

The first showing was at the Aliens Convention in September last year. Which was not a final cut. Cpl Hicks (Aaron) was there and before it was shown we let everyone know it was an incomplete preview screening.

I have to admit I had a huge boner during the end credits. ;)

Actually, the end credits weren't shown at the convention, I stopped playback as they came up .

Seriously though, all feedback is welcome. Constructive criticism is always helpful.

We're happy with the end result with the money, time, resources and equipment that we had to work with but appreciate that not everyone will enjoy it, which is fine of course.

Cheers

Darren

Hello,

I don't want you to feel that I'm being bad with you.
It's not intended but the only constructive criticism I could find is maybe learn the art of photography and composition.
It's not an easy task to shoot for sure, but imagining yourself the film before doing it is even harder especially when you have to justify the form and shape of every composition of every shots to make it a coherent whole.

I have no problem to admit anyway that you had hard time to made this fan film and I congratulates you because I know it's not an easy task.  ;)

Once again, the curse of the fan film where you have one person fulfilling half a dozen different functions.  Stuff gets neglected.  This Star Wars thing I'm still working on had a dedicated DP, and the shot selection is still very mundane.  Frustratingly so.  There were some restraints working with green screens, and they did get some different angles for one or two shots, but all in all I end up working over time trying to spice things up in post with little success.  Oddly enough, one of the few scenes they took the camera off the the tripod and had it circling the two actors - crew and equipment are visible!!

As you pointed out SM, there were flaws but it is arguably one of the best alien fanfilm i have seen yet, dead end was also quite good but that was not strictly an alien fanfilm. The creators should use this as a stepping stone for another alien fanfilm project where they can refine it more.

Among the many things I loved, I liked how on the wall on clocks there was one for Gateway.

A minor complaint, why do the Triotech guys have their logo on their uniform when they're stealing things from a facility with security cameras?

I think it was pretty damn good for being a fan-made film. Of course the acting is going to be cheesy and the sceneries are going to be lacking, but the costumes, guns and even the CGI was pretty sweet. I think the "story" was a-ok too.

But it was awesome loved the attention to detail with the props. SPOT ON!

Most actually belonged to the actors in the film. They were UKCM guys.

Also, I've got 4 copies of this movie signed by Trevor to give away soon.

Also: "There will be a number of DVD's of the film available at the London Comic Con on Saturday 7th July. Just come and find us and tell us when Aliens Epilogue starting filming to claim your free copy (whilst stock last). You'll be looking for me (Darren) who played Sgt Kemp in the film, so if you've seen the film you'll know who to look for and if you haven't then check it now on Youtube @ http://youtu.be/-4w6rtvid6I?hd=1 (http://youtu.be/-4w6rtvid6I?hd=1) and feel free to share the link around. :)"

Hi

Thanks for all the comments guys, appreciate the feed back.

Aaron is right about the props. They were all owned by the various people in the film. There were no "original" props used here. I'm pretty sure even if I'd asked Harry the answer would have been no, those things have a "substantial dollar value attached to them" after all lol. I think I'd have been nervous as hell filming with anything from the original film anyway in case I broke something.

As mentioned above, there will be copies available, for free, at the London Comic Con on the Saturday. For those further too far away, Aaron has some to give away.

Cheers

Darren

Watched it this evening with the wife. I find it amusing how while the acting and SFX obviously wern't the best available, the project still managed to have more 'heart' than A:R, AvP and AvP:R put together.

Would love to see more, I enjoyed this more than I enjoyed Prometheus.
