Title: Predator Ultimate Hunter Edition Blu-Ray Discussion
Post by: bleau on Apr 22, 2010, 05:46:35 AM
Ok guys, I been scanning the forum on http://www.blu-ray.com/ under http://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=129438 and there appears to be a new edition of Predator blu ray popping up on foreign websites.http://www.ezydvd.com.au/item.zml/813127 , http://www.amazon.ca/Predator-Extended-Edition-Blu-ray/dp/B003HNNS0Q?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1271806301&sr=1-46&tag=bluraycom0c-20, http://av.watch.impress.co.jp/docs/news/20100420_362485.html What do guys think? Do you think the U.S. will get a re-release to coincide with the new movie. I sure hope so.

I'm surprised we haven't got news yet of a million P and P2 re-releases.

Of course there is a new one coming out. With the release of Predators they will do a new edition and probably a box set later this year.

"Extendet edition" mmmm... interesting.

Methinks not. Look at the upper jaw. It has only two teeth, so Avp is discarded. It hasn't the overly big mandibles on the lower jaw aren't huge like in Wolf. It's definitely the original Predator.

Is it Anytime? Or could Fox be pulling what they did with Predator 2 with Wolf on the cover? A leaked Predators pred with no helmet?

Oh yeah!

btw that is certainly Anytime: the textures around his eyes, the top of the inner mouth... there's only one of them who looks like that, I simply believe that they have completely redone the eyes and that's why it looks a bit different...

I like the artwork! I wonder what's up with this "Extended Edition" label the Canadian Amazon site are giving it? I didn't think there was any real extra footage they could use (judging by the deleted scenes on the DVD)?

I hope they try to restore the film or do something to make the picture better. The first blu had the best picture I've ever seen with predator, but there was a lot of grain. I heard it might be a MPEG-4 AVC. Of course it will have all the extras from the special edition, maybe a Predators trailer or better yet a scene from the new movie, that would be cool.

The cover is beyond epic. I've never seen that shot/art of Anytime. Could it be the fabled "Anytime-like" Pred from the upcoming Predators? I wonder...

Also, Pre-Ordered.

Title: Re: A new Predator blu ray release may be in the works

The issue I have with the cover in general is that it says "THIS IS FOR PREDATOR FANS AND NOT FOR THE GENERAL VIEWING PUBLIC". Believe it or not, not everyone knows what a Predator looks like. There's room for the reveal.

And that's a major part of the film as it leads up to the finale. Especially as the creature gets revealed slowly, and you only see it properly shortly before everything goes to hell and Dutch is the only one left. Then the bigger reveal happens -- the removal of the mask.

That cover really violates all that. Sure, it's cool from the perspective of someone familiar with it all, but I think it's an awful decision from a narrative perspective. The masked one is a fair bit better, but a better cover would just be Arnie, partially covered in darkness, with the three-dot laser painted on him.

Post by: Sol on May 11, 2010, 03:18:36 PM
The film is 23 years old, and has been released with zero spoilers on the cover for every major media platform since then the late 1980's.

Someone who hasn't seen the film before, duh.

It being 23 years old really just supports my point; there's so little awareness of the Predator monster that the reveal is likely a surprise to many people. Having a spoilerific case might've been more appropriate five to ten years after release, but almost twenty-five years later, this film is as mysterious as it could ever be insofar as we're talking post-release.

Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment has sent us exclusive information about the upcoming Predator "Ultimate Hunter Edition" Blu-ray which hits stores on June 29th 2010. The new release will feature an all new digital restoration of the film, a new sneak peak at Predators, and an all-new retrospective documentary entitled "Evolution of the Species: Hunters of Extreme Perfection" that includes interviews with Predators producer Robert Rodriguez, director Nimród Antal and original Predator  producer John Davis. Here's a quote from Rodriguez from the doc:

"What I loved about Predator is how it played against expectations. Everyone expected another Commando type movie, and it starts off that way but then switches gears and goes very horror, sci-fi and it was refreshing to see something take that turn and become something else and that's what I think give it it's cult classic status."

Also, the release will include one of those $10 Movie Money certificates for Predators, which hits theaters on July 9th. Read the full details now, after the jump.

I agree. I like the old one on the DVD special edition better. The new one does not look very good. I am such a huge fan I'll probably make my own cover and slip in the case. I will wait though till I get it, and if it bugs me enough then I will make my own cover. What do you guys think? Good idea or no?

I know for sure it is for U.S. The UK I think is the same also, but not 100% sure. On http://www.amazon.co.uk/Predator-Ultimate-Hunter-Blu-ray-US/dp/B003L16FAE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1274655729&sr=1-1 it is the same as the U.S. one.

Like I said, I will probably just make my own cover or something, that one looks so childish looking to me, like a kid made it.

That's because the movie was rated 18 in Germany, because of the new upcoming blu-ray Fox did give the movie back to the rating system, this time it got an 16! That's why they are writing it's the uncut version so people don't get confused with the new approved 16 rating.

I was reading that last night. I hope this is not true, Fox is calling it a digital restoration right? A digital restoration does not use DNR, that will kill the detail. As far as I know the new Alien Anthology had a complete digital restoration done by Lowry Digital. I am hoping the same has been done for predator. Lowry has done good work and are the best from what I have heard. I will wait for a review before I buy it.

Here is a review http://www.filmsactu.com/test-blu-ray-predator-ultimate-hunter-edition-10498.htm

Here is a screenshot comparison with the old blu and the remastered version.

Old blu ray http://www.imagebam.com/image/e3120984037007

Remastered version http://www.imagebam.com/image/0cc18084037004

The remastered looks sharper to me, also looks like a lot of grain has been removed.

I'm watching it right now and the quality is incredible.  its funny cause Dillion in the beginning looks so fake.  Looks like he's been photoshoped.
Great to finally have good quality of this film with the tons of rereleases that happened.  Should have been done long time ago.

Worth the pick up for sure.

Really the quality of the picture is worth the pick up.  Plus I think they give ticket to watch predators in theatre.
I watched half of it already and was waiting to see the helicopter part where then drop down in the jungle which is the worst quality of the film and I got to say this new Hunter edition looks perfect.

As a huge fan Im just as excited to re watch this movie right before I watch predators like I was planning to do long time ago.  Im just glad I get to watch in great quality.

That is a little over 11 minutes and it is Nimrod, RR, and I think John Davis interview. Mostly just talk.

Get one dude. Movies are a lot more immersive on Blu-Ray, that is if you got a good setup. If you got surround sound then all you need is the player. My dad does not have surround and the sound sucks, action scenes are extremely loud and dialog is hard to hear. If you got a center channel speaker you can adjust the volume on that channel to hear dialog real well, and still enjoy the surrounds. Plus the Alien Anthology comes out later this year too on Blu-Ray. Here is the dvd vs blu.

Thanks for that Darkness, very interesting. I wonder what John McTiernan thinks of this version? From what I gather, the director has to approve any new transfer of their film, but I wonder how he feels about certain scenes changing to a brighter contrast level. To me that is more significant than removing the grain, as it changes the "mood" of certain shots. Thoughts?

Well, I'm only going on the basis they have to approve it because the producer of many of James Cameron's previous DVDs says that the reason The Abyss and True Lies haven't been released on Blu-ray yet is because he has to approve the HD transfers made of them, and that previously he hadn't had time because of his Avatar commitments. I presume the same approval process is true for everyone.

Also, there's "recent" interviews with McTiernan on the Predator Special Edition DVD remember ;)

No as a matter of fact, only a few directors get complete control over everything, Nolan and Cameron are like the exception. I know that Cameron has it under contract. Most other directors don't have contracts like him.

Word out on the interwebs is this new bluray is trash due to over application of DNR.  Arnold supposedly isn't the only person who looks like a wax statue in this film.  Sadly, it will probably be a while untill Fox gets their asses around to releasing it again.  And thankfully, James Cameron has to approve the Aliens bluray, so that won't be getting DNR'ed to shit.

Hilariously, people on blu-ray.com have been referencing this thread talking trash about the people posting in it. XD

It doesn't look waxy at all, maybe 2 shots in the opening, and it also looks much better in motion. It's also that pretty much every professional review says that it looks quite good and definitially better than the old one. They not only removed the grain but all the dropouts, scratches etc. The whole print looks clean and fresh.

Yes, they used DNR, but why not? It looks clean and crisp without looking soft, better colors (Old one had a red touch and was pretty murky). It's an overall greater appearance. I'm a fan of this film since 15 years now, and this is definitially the best the movie has ever looked and will ever look, i wouldn't say it if i wouldn't mean it, I'm stunned by this release. Compare it with the old one, the opening shot is washed in grain and dropouts, the colors are lifeless...the new transfer, not a single scratch, not a single dropout, no grain.

People wanted a clean, remastered version of this movie on Blu? Here it is people. Do some scenes look a bit too soft? Yes they do, but that are the dark scenes that looked horrendous in the first place. This Blu_ray is a Win-Win situation.

I'm gonna wait for the official blu-ray.com review before I decide to buy this.  Obviously, this release was a reaction to people complaining about the grain, but some grain on a film is fine.  You should expect that in a cinematic experience.  You can have better detail without people looking like wax statues.

Second point it looks like its been brightened up too much ala the old Halloween DVD and the Phantasm II DVD.  Darkness is a big part of movies like this, so I want to see what the reviewer says about that.  They should've done the smart thing and get the director of photography involved with the bluray, but Fox seems to think they can go cheap on the Predator franchise for whatever reason.

I wouldn't get excited.  Something I read from someone else who has it:

QuoteIt IS worse. I've seen the disc and it's a total embarrassment. So much DNR has been heaped on the release the image looks totally filtered and completely unnatural. It's going to get absolutely slammed, and rightly so, by any critic who knows what they're talking about.

I realize the old disc wasn't anything to write home about either -- but this is worse. It's great for the supplements, and for $15 I can see fans still buying it, but for the movie itself...regrettably, the older BD is more satisfying

And this:

Quote"From the moment one's eyes spy the Twentieth Century Fox logo in all its soft, buttery ooze, it's obvious the film has been heavily scrubbed with massive amounts of DNR (there isn't a speck of grain in sight), and while edge enhancement hasn't been heavily applied, there's enough there for it to be unmistakable on several occasions. The shots that have always been soft now take on an added mushiness that's ugly and almost unwatchable"

Those guys are hardcore Blu-Ray fanboys who want nothing but perfection. For the average Joe Sixpack, they just want a good-looking movie and won't notice that stuff. I can see choosing the old version for nostalgia-sake. I mean I guess the grain adds to 80s feel of the movie but those guys are just complaining for the sake of it.

Shouldn't the movie look like the director intended?  What is with this bs about appeasing Joe Sixpack.  Really, the general public shouldn't dictate how an old film looks.  The movie is supposed to be gritty and dark.  Dark lighting and some grain sets the tone of the film.  It's not supposed to look like a f**king Paul W.S. Anderson videogame movie.  F**k Joe Sixpack.  Obviously, the old bluray was f**ked up for different reasons, but that doesn't mean we should be taking a trip to the wax museum with this bluray.  Like I said, Fox should've gotten the director of photography involved.  That's what Anchor Bay did for Halloween.  It looks both amazing and true to the original intended feel of the film.

Yeah, I'm sure the director wants his movie to be washed in grain, dropouts and errors and faces that are so red that they look burned. I mean why have a clean, even and colorful picture that looks fresh and new when you can have a bad print?

HD film grain, wow, that's a must have  :P

Quotebut that doesn't mean we should be taking a trip to the wax museum with this bluray.
And that's the reason why i can't take any word of you seriously. You're going by one screenshot and start a rant here, i own this blu-ray and i can tell you that it doesn't look waxy at all, one shot doesn't make a movie.

Stop talking BS. Also, no one forces you to buy it, if you like grain, dropouts and a generally bad print with an ancient mpeg 2 codec, go a head and buy the old one, it's that simple. But until you have seen the new release and not a couple of compressed screenshots, please, stop complaining about it, because you're not in the position to do so. I had very mixed feelings when i bought it, but then i was blown away by it, so i'm talking out of experience.

QuoteIt's not supposed to look like a f**king Paul W.S. Anderson videogame movie.

I don't think anyone was talking about a video game?

Anyways I think this new version has more detail. I can tell easily. Not to mention the film is old. what do you expect it to look like?  Go and take your little rant over to blu ray.com and you can argue with all the wannabe experts.

Did you see this film in theaters?  You sound like you have expert knowledge.  The film used grainy film stock.  It was the director's decision.  The film should represent the intentions of the original film maker.  If he didn't want it to look brightly lit and all smoothed out so some dorks would think their bluray player and HDTV was worth it, then it shouldn't look that way.  Going back and changing a movie is stupid.  It should appear like the original camera negative or as close as possible.  And no this doesn't mean I prefer a shitty encoded Bluray.  You're like saying it would be preferable to be hit in the nuts with a bat than a golf club.  Both options aren't good.

Yeah becuase predator nerds are superior to bluray nerds?  The last Predator bluray was totally paned as one of the worst bluray releases ever, that's why they released this one as an over-reaction.  Lets see how this plays out.  I'm going to say this disc will get more hate than the last one.

Did I say that? You need to read, understand my comment. Don't take it out of context and start putting in your own words. If you want to whine, argue and bitch, thats fine. But don't bring up all the technical details like experts would. No here really gives a shit!

The directors intent, the film stock used, whatever, most people do not care, they just want a film to look good on there TV's. You spend thousands of dollars for an HD setup, you want the picture of your favorite movie to look good right. I think most people will be happy with it. The biggest problem with the old one was the grain. I don't care that was the intention or because of film stock used, it was distracting in some scenes, Even people who like the old one complained about excessive grain.

You're wrong on this. It's not like with todays movies where they choose to add grain as a stylistic choise, this movie is almost 25 years old now, it were technical errors, errors that were now fixed. You act like the whole movie looks different now, they didnt re-color correct it or anything, they removed the grain and dropouts, in some scenes that were murky they brightened it a bit, big deal! You act like the movie is totally different now and was destroyed without having seen it. So if anything, i'm more of an expert than you are on this.

I had 4 different VHS of this movie, 2 of them with very good picture quality, and never was the grain as excessive and never was the print as bad as on the DVD and first Blu-Ray. The opening shot with the helicopter looks like a 1940's movie with its errors and dropouts and scratches all over the place, it wasnt like that on VHS, why? Because the movie was fresh when they did the VHS prints and over the years the master was heavily attacked by dust and scratches, and you notice on the previously released masters. Now on the hunter edition it is the way it was intended to be. If anything, this Blu-Ray is the closest to the directors vision since 1988 when it was first released and was still fresh. The VHS was always brighter than the DVD too.

Buy it, rent it, do whatever you want, but watch it first before you come here and talk a bunch of bullshit about it.

I agree with you. A few of the shots looked horrible on DVD. When I first bought it, not the two disc one, I was very surprised. Even Alien doesn't look bad, at least the quadrilogy version, and it's older. I am glad that they are going back and fixing the problems. It's not like they're doing a George Lucus with the original trilogy in my opinion. They're doing what the people did for the original Star Trek seasons for Blu-Ray, going back and cleaning things up to show what was originally intended. But anyways, I pre-ordered my copy from Amazon.com and will be getting it tomorrow. I only had the "basic" version on DVD and have never seen any bonus stuff before, so I know how I'll be spending my evening tomorrow.  :)

The Predator 2 blu is a good buy. The only Alien that needs grain removed would be Aliens, I think. Alien looks good enough upscaled on my PS3. Considering how massive the Alien Anthology seems to be, I'd expect a good job.

But on a side note, the PQ on this disc is fantastic. That blu-ray.com review can suck it.

The new disc looks great for people who want their films to look artificial, plastic, and unnatural.  I don't even have a blu ray player, but if I did, I'd stick with the 2008 release.  Seriously, they totally destroyed the look of the original film, replacing the muted colors of the shady jungle with unnacceptably bright, vivid colors that look like shit.  The nighttime shots are especially horrendous.  This is even worse than the blue-green tinge Fox gave to Alien on the Quad release.
Title: Re: Predator Ultimate Hunter Edition Blu-Ray Discussion
Post by: J-Syxx on Jul 01, 2010, 05:07:08 AM
This disc is getting panned hard.  Blu-ray.com gave it one star less for picture quality than the previous release.  It's been DNR'ed to death like everyone has suspected:

QuoteWhen Predator debuted on Blu-ray in April 2008, on a 25 GB disc, it featured a relatively low bit-rate MPEG-2 transfer, prone to excessive noisiness and compression artifacts. While the film has never been a slick-looking production, and though the 2008 version was certainly the best the movie had looked on home video up until that time, there was an outcry from videophiles who felt it could look even better. The solution, really, was simple: do a remaster, use a less antiquated encode, a higher bit-rate, and put it on a 50 GB dual-layer disc. 20th Century Fox complied for this new Ultimate Hunter Edition, but unfortunately, they've must've taken complaints about the film's graininess/noisiness to heart, because they've also slathered this re-release with an ungodly amount of digital noise reduction. Now, this is bound to be controversial. The vocal minority of so- called "grain-haters" will praise this transfer because there's no longer any evidence that Predator was shot on film—it now has a bright, glossy, smeary, plasticized sheen that's as far from filmic as you can get. And, it should be said, about as far from how Predator is supposed to look as you can get. This is revisionist re-releasing at its worst, and most film collectors —who tend to want films to look as close to their original appearance as possible—are going to be severely disappointed. I know I'm going to get hate mail, but I can't conscionably give this transfer any higher than a 2/5.

The texture of the film's grain structure has been stripped entirely from the picture, obliterating the finest details in the process. Arnie's face looks like a candle wax stump, oily and smooth. Carl Weathers' mustache seems airbrushed onto his face. The jungle might as well be digitized. Even the 20th Century Fox logo that opens the film appears soft, under a thick coating of Gaussian blur. This is easily one of the worst abuses of DNR to hit Blu-ray yet. What's frustrating, then, is that in most other regards, this transfer could have been a massive improvement. What's the point of a higher bit-rate if you're just going to scrub away the film's texture? Yes, the transfer looks clean, ultra-colorful, and bright—a good deal brighter than the previous release—but it also looks unnatural, artificial, unnecessarily tampered with. The good news—if you want to call it that—is that black levels are solid, compression artifacts are absent this time around, and edge enhancement is nowhere near as prevalent or overzealous as it is in other DNR'ed-to-oblivion titles. None of this really matters, though, when you're watching an image that looks like it's been rubbed down with Vaseline. I suddenly feel the urge to pray for the fidelity of the Alien quadrilogy box-set being released later this year.

I don't know, I'm OK with it. I don't know what parts they were talking about with Arnie's waxy face, was it the beginning? If so I don't see it being waxy, I just see a sweaty face that's dealing with the humidity. I treat it like a popcorn movie, which it originally was supposed to be, and I'm OK with it. Before it already had bad things in the DVD like the "special effect" rope or the weird 2d Arnie face that is clean but everything else had grain I think. I'll admit I would be more pissed off if they did this to something else like Alien. They should have done what the same people did for the Original Star Trek seasons, give you the OPTION to watch the "enhanced" or original versions. I think more people would have been happy if they went that route.

I just watched the Ultimate Blu-Ray and I gotta say, it is AWESOME! Gone are all the horrible, grainy shots, instead replaced by CRISP, CLEAR visuals. There is DEPTH to the picture now. A really nice upgrade to the 21st Century! If I want to watch the old, prehistoric looking version of Predator, I can just pop in the 2008 Blu-Ray. Will I ever again? Nope. THIS is the 1st prize version in my book.

Now lets hope Aliens gets the same treatmeant... although theres nothing they can do about Ripley's HAIRSTYLE!  :D

If they took the masters for Halloween and ran it through some stupid filter to brighten everything up a million times, you'd see a bunch of new crap you hadn't noticed before as well.  But guess what?  It wouldn't be Halloween anymore.

I trust other reviewers because they're going to be honest and not hype up something because they're fanboys.  If they say it looks like Carl Weathers now looks like his mustache was painted on with a sharpie due to excessive DNR, I'm going to believe them.  I'm not going to waste money on a shoddy product.

Those reviewers blew a lot of it out of proportion. They took one scene, and said it was like that during the whole film.
This is what I said on AvPGalaxy's facebook page: "The scene where Dutch and Dillon are talking with the general at the beginning was a little iffy, but besides that I found the rest of the film looked great."

The rest of the film looks great. It really does, you should check it out for yourself before you judge what you haven't seen.

High Def Digest's Review is pretty negative. :(

"I'm sorry to say, the studio has actually made matters worse with this so-called "new" 1080p/AVC MPEG-4 transfer, retaining its original 1.85:1 aspect ratio."

"When that day finally comes — and hopefully, it will — we'll, of course, have yet another version of 'Predator.' But as long as it's done properly, we'll at last be given the film as it should've always looked rather than this presentation of wax figurines."

He gave the video quality a lower score this time around then on the first Blu-ray release.

I bought it the last week, and the visual and sound quality were awesome! My girlfriend knows the movie but when she watched the blu-ray, she didn't know it was the first Predator, she though it was a new one (she didn't see Predator 2).

In some pics on the internet, looks like Scharzy is in wax lol, it's not that when you watch it. The picture is polished of all particules like if it was a modern movie.
I'm really happy of the change, knowing the old blu-ray version was more ugly than a dvd quality.
The bonus are the same of the dvd collector version + some documentary with Antal and Rodriguez.

I give it a 5+/5  ;D

Now I'm waiting the future bluray 3D version working with 3D Television  :P

I found this combo pack that has The Ultimate Hunter Edition and Predator 2 on Blu-ray at Best Buy and I'm getting that for my birthday in September. It was only $30 so a pretty good deal.

i bought the first predator bluray a few months back and 2 weeks ago, i bought the hunter edition with both. then, my stupid dog chewed up the predator 1 disc. so, a week later, my girlfriend felt bad so she went and bought the FIRST predator bluray. i told her i already have that one and that the dog chewed up the other one. she started crying and for some reason she took the wrapper off it too so i cant return it. this sucks.

I bought it hell yes. I got the bluray boxset that included Predator 2 over at best buy on sale for $30. They also had the first AvP for only $15 (was never going to pay $30-35 for that crap.) And anyone who doesn't like the transfer is a overzealous tool, theirs nothing wrong with them removing the grain from the picture. So it looks new and not old who cares?? I know the movies is 23 years old. I don't need the grain to remind me.

Ok guys, I need help as I'm at work, it's payday, and I'm going to purchase Predator on blu-ray today. The problem is, I have a choice of 2, but I don't have time to read the whole thread and make up my mind which to get. I want the one with the best picture, and the best extras. Here are my choices:

The Ultimate Hunter edition is the very definition of blu-ray. Marvelous quality. definitely go for it. Plus, it is filled with extras (the ones from the 2-disc set of the dvd release+something from rodriguez) , which the first release monstrously lacks.

I got the Canadian edition and there was no new footage from what I saw. Same for P2.

I finally had the chance to watch the Hunters Edition last night, and I have to say it look incredible. Aside from the one scene with Dillon at the beginning which everyone talks about (which wasn't even really that bad by the way) the transfer is superb. The film looked awesome.

And as much as I hate P2, I watched that aswell and the picture was really good. Could have been better in places, but it was definately much better than DVD. Sound was awesome.

Finaly got around to watching the new Predator Hunter Edition Blu-ray.

Its well worth buying it again if you already have the previous version, Sell it on ebay or whatever.

The sound is MUCH better i had to turn my speakers down during gun fighting scenes. The picture is much better. Its not crystal clear as its still 23 years old but its still clear enough that Arnys 1 long right ear hair kept annoying me.

The title screen menu is decent too. Nice BGM and a slightly faded out compilation video in the background are good enough. Its not the easiest way to navigate in the special features but the fact there is alot of special features makes up for it.

One deleted scene that i think could of benefitted the movie was during the scene where Dutch is running through the forest shortly after being shot in the shoulder (after Billys death). Dutch is running away and hides in some forestry and he notices he is covered in spiders but he doesnt want to move to catch attention. Then we see Predators tri laser on the back of Dutch's head but because Dutch doesnt realise Pred decides to move the sights onto the tree in front of him and shoots the tree.

Id of loved that scene to of been in the movie to show some more of the "playing".
Title: Re: Predator Ultimate Hunter Edition Blu-Ray Discussion
Post by: Sharp Sticks on Sep 10, 2010, 10:13:21 PM
Those clips were badass, but putting them back in would screw up the pacing of Dutch's run and fall into the river. The pacing in that scene is perfect, anything more wouldn't work.

Not that those scenes weren't really interesting. I like to acknowledge them as peripheral events.
Title: Re: Predator Ultimate Hunter Edition Blu-Ray Discussion
Post by: Bakurenoh on Sep 10, 2010, 10:16:50 PM
I agree the pacing is already perfect. But it just would of been a nice addition to the movie after 20 or so years.

But dont fix what isnt broken ect.

I kind of have in the back of my mind now when i watch the movie the scene thats missing
Title: Re: Predator Ultimate Hunter Edition Blu-Ray Discussion
Post by: Sharp Sticks on Sep 10, 2010, 10:24:25 PM
Yeah, I watch it the same way. I don't need to see it, but the meaning of the scenes, that the Predator is having fun screwing with Arnie, supports the rest of the movie.

I love it when such a fat faggot makes a ranting video when he didnt even watched the movie and only based his opinion on one f**king screenshot.

Yes, one or two shots look a little waxy and they went over the top with the DNR, but 95% of the movie look crisp and clean, and there is still minimal grain left.

This is the version to buy if you want to see te movie in a tremendous quality.

This Bluray is a disgrace to the film.  Can't believe someone would praise something that has all the detail ripped out via heavy DNR just because of the fact you can't see any grain on the picture smeared with vasoline.  Also the fact the movie has been brightened up a hell of a lot, destroying the lighting in this film that helps create mood and atmosphere.  The fact there isn't any darkness anymore doesn't mean the picture is actualy better guys.  The only place this Bluray hasn't gotten trashed is here, which isn't suprising honestly.

The film gained details, not the opposite. It is a godzilla-sized step-up from the DvD release.

The Blu-ray added much more detail to the film. Look at Mac's face in the Before, it's kinda hard to see. Now look at it the After, you can even see the white in his eyes in the After.

Sums up what is wrong with this Bluray:

No, it doesn't. The finest details haven't been obliterated - they were freaking improved; It isn't brighter by a long shot; It doesn't look artificial; it looks very natural instead.
Look at this (http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/screenshot.php?movieid=11375&position=1) shot. it is freakin' detailed and there isn't any kind of dirt, grain or blur.

If you're not happy with this blu-ray, no one forces you to buy it. Go back to the DvD version, if it is so much more detailed (?) and Carl Weathers' mustache doesn't look airbrushed (!).

The Blu-Ray.com reviewer, I'm sad to say this, relied too much on the original *flawed* look of the film, and the review misses the point of Blu-Ray itself - cleaning a film to make it the highest quality possible. Predator UHE is one of the best Blu-Rays I've ever seen.

Blu elites hate anything with the word 'de-grained' or 'DNR', so there are extremists on both sides. Predator UHE ain't no Gladiator debacle, which had objects disappearing onscreen. Fans be happy, others, let it go and move on, it's a frickin' disc, you will not be forced to purchase it.

Actually, yes, Carl Weathers' moustache was removed.  It then had to then be air-brushed back on.

So the point of Bluray is removing grain to the point it makes the actors look like wax statues?  Got it.  Maybe they should just remake the entire film with CGI.  I think you guys would be really impressed then.

QuoteThe film gained details, not the opposite. It is a godzilla-sized step-up from the DvD release.

You're using the wrong benchmark here. Blurays should be compared to VHS releases.  Than the butter smeared picture will look even more "totally awe3some, I so hope they do this to Aliens in teh anthology guise!  I love you Rupert Murdoch!"

Too bad the Ultimate Hunter Edition doesn't retain the film grain. Only thing it has going for it are the extras and nothing else.
Hopefully I'll be banned too since I heavily prefer film grain over anything which looks like Avatar or Patton. Anyone ever watch the Blu-ray of DARK CITY or the USA release of Pan'S Labyrinth? Same thing happened with the Skynet Edition of Terminator 2.

This of course was shot on celluloid and not every movie should look the same to each other.
Original release for film grain retained image and UHE for extras.
Yep I expect a shitstorm. ;D

The UHE only has one new extra compared to the 2-Disc DVD. I'm just gonna go with the 2008 release. Maybe there'll be an exchange program where the image isn't plasticised and actually looks like film again. ;)

I'd heard some horror stories about the close-ups during the opening scene, but I'd never actually realised how bad it would really look. Dillon looks like CGI, for chrissakes. :D

However, after looking at all the other image comparisons, the UH edition looks like a massive improvement. Details in the backgrounds are clearly ramped up, and it almost makes the older blu-ray appear to be of murky VHS-quality by comparison.

And I don't mind film grain in the slightest.

The UHE does have grain, it's just a very fine layer instead of the thick, blocky grain it was before, they not only removed that but also all the scratches and dirt on the master, with increasing detail. Watch it on your television and you'll see, it looks amazing. You can se all the sweat, pores on each actors face.

It looks like a brand new movie.

I just watched this earlier on tonight, about half an hour ago I believe, and whilst the vast majority of the feature was absolutely astounding in picture quality some of the shots within some scenes didn't look as great as I expected them to. There were a few shots when the camera didn't look like it had focused in on anything, leaving the actors and scenery blurred, other times it appeared to focus on background rather than the character leaving it looking rather odd. Also, Dillon looked like CGI in the opening when the General is explaining the mission, both the General and Dutch looked crisp and clear but Dillon looked like a bad CGI effect. :D Fortunately these instances were only a few seconds long at least and probably about a minute at most.
Sound quality was fantastic and there were some small sounds that I have never noticed before when watching the movie, be it either a Predator click or a small jungle noise, it was a clear and great improvement over the DVD version. Some snippets of dialogue seemed noticeably more audible.
The movie looked absolutely brilliant and I have no other complaints, a fantastic transfer and highly recommended if you haven't already got it in your collection.

9.5/10

Title: Re: Predator Ultimate Hunter Edition Blu-Ray Discussion
Post by: bleau on Mar 18, 2011, 09:30:16 AM
The reason the characters look waxy is because of a number of reasons, other than the DNR. I believe make up, film location and directors shooting style are the culprit.

Arnold was smeared with Vasoline, including his face. R.G. Armstrong was covered with make up, because of his age.

"John McTiernan admitted that actor R.G. Armstrong was too old for his part, but kept Armstrong simply because he liked him. Added to this, the actor wore "too much" tanning makeup to hide his age somewhat."

It was filmed in the jungles of Palenque, Mexico. It was vary cold at night, and vary humid in the day. Running in a humid jungle = sweat. Sweat = oily skin.

I believe the opening sequence with Arnold, Weathers, and Armstrong were filmed from a far distance with the camera zoomed. Meaning a soft picture. I cant find the source for this, but will edit when I do later.

I heard the rumor that Carl Weathers mustache was airbrushed in. That is simply not true.

I think the UHE is a marvel in restoration. It's a shame the the Hi Def community blame DNR for the wax look of the actors. Maybe the film looks to new to some. But I assure that any doubts about loss of detail because of too much DNR is simply because there was not any detail to loose to begin with.

Reputable reviewers Gave poor rating on picture quality based on the use of DNR. I have seen DNR and know all about it. I don't know how the restoration was done, but fine detail is retained. If there is not enough detail in the actors faces, it was because of reasons above, which reviewers should have noted.

Film is altered all the time weather it be for removal of crew and equipment, or to fix effects. This film was altered simply because of heavy grain, and because the film looked dated. Does it look natural? No. Some scenes with the actors look unnatural but still has some nice scenes. The old disc looks natural because of the layer of grain. The old looks better in some scenes and the new one looks better in others.

A lot of HD nuts are surprisingly elitist. I'm over at the Blu forums and whilst the majority of people are great, there are some who like to be very vocal and antagonistic, but hey, dat's teh internets. And yeah, the actors were smeared in oils, vaseline, whatever, so ... but sometimes you read a review and think, "That's not right." What can you do, eh?

I know what I'm doing - waiting for Fox to take another stab at it (most likely alongside Predators 2), with a third transfer which will hopefully get it just right and please everyone in the process. I know there's a solid chance it won't happen, but this disc has received so much bad press that Fox have got to at least be thinking about it.

Until then I'm sticking with the DVD.

I just got this in the mail from Amazon today. Will report back with my thoughts on the new transfer.

MOD:

Really really unbalanced. The whole film needs to be rescanned like Alien and Aliens. There's no excuse for shots near the beginning looking like vaseline is smeared on the lens. Some shots really make the characters look waxy. No way that's the makeup because in most shots they look absolutely fine. There's a close up of Richard Chaves that looks like his makeup's been adjusted.

It just needs to be rescanned, simple as that, not digitally touched up to this extent. That's just lazy.
