Anyone remember "ALIEN" rip-off 1.5 inch lead figures called, I think, "Krynex"? (Read 5,595 times)

In the early 1990s when ALIENS (1986) made its terrestrial TV debut, there was something of a merchandising revival and mainstream interest in all things ALIENS and Colonial Marines.

Even non licenced, but ALIEN style asthetic creatures or references in videogames (especially) and table-top "warhammer" style figurines had a small fan-fare.

The officially licenced "leading edge" games lead ALIEN queen.

I recall these weren't cheap; so there were knock-offs to complete the collection.

One was called (and my memory is stretched) "Krynex" or "Crynex" which tried to become its own thing, and started getting creative with ALIEN Queens that had phaser guns for arms, and biomechanical armour.
Imagine "ALIENS meets Dino-riders meets Warhammer"

The human side I'd argue their "colonial marines" looked more like the Colonial Marines than Leading Edge's officially licenced. They also had an almost ALIEN 3 Weyland Yutano Commando before it came to the screen.

Obviously I can't find anything and I recall a "hear say" rumour of a cease and desist and threatened with a copyright lawsuit.

Oh and the reason for this thread? I think I found two "ALIEN warriors" from this same Krynex line in the back of an old junk box!
Will have to use a close up image if anyone is interested in seeing them (unpainted).

Ok here they are! (the "ALIENS" at least)

You have to remember that these "crynex" figures were not official aliens, lead figures. Do you see the resemblance to ALIENS?

Click Ctrl and wheel mouse to zoom in and out- as IMUGR is embedded the images funny.

Or link to compilation folder.

The one on the left has a slightly different head shape.

Retractable mouth.

Arms which can be moulded an attached for different posing. Agains notice the H R Giger "copyright" biomechanical design.

Full torsos with tubes on back and centre spikes.

Fairly certain you're talking about the Kryomek figures:

I believe the Aliens in your above post are something else though, I might have to do some detective work.

Yes and double yes.

Apologies for the delayed reply.

From the same line the "colonial troopers".

These are absolutely fantastic!  ...and hilarious.

I've been compiling a couple pages of bootlegs, knock offs and other 'illegal aliens'.

You can find Kenner stuff here and all the other weird and imitation stuff here.  Have fun with those. Too much lol.  ;D

Haven't added samples of these items.  Would love to do so, if that's OK.  PM me, please, if that's OK.

Thanks for posting these wonderful pieces of weirdness. :)

I think the manufacturer is still in business and has a website gallery.

I believe the Aliens in your above post are something else though, I might have to do some detective work.

I just did some more digging myself.

It turns out Kryomek derived from a previous company called "Nexus". While if you google Kryomek Aliens you get fantasical ALIENS like the "Samurai ALIEN" and almost WARHAMMER-esque marines, the "Nexus" range was more ALIENS like.

In fact I found the original Nexus "colonial marines" rip-off lead casts. I think those rumours of a 20th Century Fox cease and desist copyright order might not have been unfounded after all.

Here is a "Hicks" rip-off.

Here is a "Hudson" rip-off

Here is a "Drake rip-off"

Still waiting to hear from where my lead figures were from but another "homebrew" lead alien rip-off company was called Reviresco.

There's also a 15mm range by a company called Kharusan (sp?), "space demons".

By far the worst ALIENS rip-off (Kharusan), in terms of like-for-like copyright infringement, out there.

I messaged the "Nexus" company in gateshead but no response. One could assume, partly in fear of 20th Century Fox comeback.

Considering the choas of the Disney/Fox Studios merger, such vigilance is unfounded.

Yeah, I think you're right.

A small company called Pendraken, who mostly makes historical and fantasy miniatures in extremely small scales, also does some CMs and Aliens (and even a Predator).

I'll also point out that thanks to the finer points of UK law around miniatures, these are totally above board legally.

I have a ton of them but never settled on a game system to use them under, so they remain unpainted. These are from a quick google search to illustrate the look:
