can somebody please explain to me how this is going to be a prequel?????

pre·quel
noun

a literary or dramatic work whose story precedes that of an earlier-written work.

Just because it's not "the adventures of young Ripley" doesn't mean it's not a prequel.

Quotebram stokers dracula is not a prequel to blade trinity :)

No, because Dracula was written first. The Blade trilogy can, however, be viewed as a sequel to Dracula, as the events of that book form part of the history of Blade's world, as well as Dracula actually featuring in the third film.

It's a story set in the same fictional Universe that ALIEN is set in. The timeline is before the first ALIEN movie. The end of this movie is not the beginning of Alien but things that happen in Prometheus will relate to Alien.

For example we might not see the creation of the ALIENS and the EGGS in Prometheus, but we may be given information in the course of the movie that will allow us to create a reasonable and plausible theory in our minds to how they came about.

This is really exciting stuff. Obviously, this is a prequel but it will stand alone and still tie in some of the back-story of ALIEN. To be honest, as much I love ALIEN/ALIENS, it will be really cool to see new stuff in the same Universe created by Ridley.  He's giving us the best of both worlds, something completely new and cool with big tie-ins to ALIEN. Obviously, I think he's doing a little misdirect here. I don't think he or the producers want to advertise this as ALIEN V.  I won't be disappointed if the Xeno ends up not making an appearance. Still, I am willing to bet that there will be more than what we know now (related to the Xeno) that will be in Prometheus. It is amazing that here we are, almost March and still no major leaks. I think that is pretty amazing in this digital age and given the excitement over this film. I'm thinking that we will see a lot of new clips and pics in March though.

I get what everybody is saying, I'm just complaining a little that when asked directly on whether or not this film is a prequel, Ridley doesn't give a straight yes or no but instead goes on saying that Guy Pierce is Peter Weyland and that that's the only connection or whatnot.  He also claims that this film is set in "a new world" which doesn't help the concept that this is a film taking place in the Alien universe which isn't exactly brand new.

"world" as in plotline and themes explored. its a diferent kind of journey and a new look of that universe.

Ridley also claims that Peter Weyland is the only link to the Alien films, but what about the Derelict and the Space Jockeys?

I'm anxious to see where Scott is taking this (and I hope it's a very, VERY good place) and I'm excited for the new creatures, but I know I'm not alone when I say I was REALLY hoping he was going to save our favorite bio mechanical organism from the short, dimwitted, pathetically weak, cannon fodder of a mess we now have.

I have to say I'm not too pleased with the overall new bio mechanical look in Prometheus, either. It looks more cybernetic than bio mechanical. You can tell everything is made from some sort of alloy whereas, in the original ALIEN, it looked as though it were made from the bones taken from some bizarre creature. THAT is bio mechanical. The new look is lacking that Giger feel. And that bothers me. A lot.

Please Prometheus, please, rub AVP and Paul Anderson's silliness out of existence...
Oh God yes. That, and the bombastic shite spawned by the unholy "Brothers Strause".

This is me hoping that Peter Weyland is Australian.

I don't think Ridley variating on the ALIEN theme in terms of the 'Giger look and feel' is bad whatsoever. Why do we need a repeat of the exact same look of the first film? Why do the original alien creatures need to show up for us to be excited about this film? I want something different, familiar yet in a fresh direction. If some of you want every aesthetic that Scott presented to us in A L I E N then I Implore you, go watch ALIEN.

Scott has either been completely mis-quoted/translated, didn't actually say anything of the sort at all or is talking straight out of his ass (as he has been known to do). If the latter, this is just the same smoke and mirrors bullshit that has surrounded this film since the beginning, only with this latest quote we know that Scott (or his press department) is talking complete and utter rubbish.

We shouldn't even be debating this. It is misinformation.

Ridley is pretty funny. He's so stuck in his ways, constant poker face. But when he's pressed on an issue he'll spill like in this interview:

EGE: So you are linking this directly with the Alien films?

RS: Not at all.

EGE: Not at all?

RS: No.

EGE: No?

RS: I mean, you could actually say, and there's a quote I did, a pretty good quote: By the end of the third act you start to realize there's a DNA of the very first alien, but none of the subsequent aliens. To tell you what that is is a pity, and I'm not going to tell you, because it's actually pretty good, pretty organic to the process and to the original. But we go back, we don't go forward.

EGE: The official synopsis from Fox says that this revolves around the "Alien Gods", the "Space Jockey" from the first film.

RS: Yeah, so there you have that. I was always amazed that, I mean, I've only done two science-fictions, but I was always amazed that no one asked who the hell the Space Jockey was. He wasn't even called the Space Jockey. During the film they started to call it the Space Jockey. I don't know who started that one off. I always thought it was amazing that no one ever asked who he was, and why was he there? What was all that about? I sat thinking about this for a while and thought, well, there's a story! And the other four [films] missed it! So, here it is.
