Well, I've played through the first mission. The Queen was really hard, I lost three men to it. I'm completely stuck in the second mission. The guy says I have to find some explosives to plant on some big door?

You need to go back to the building you were before encountering that door. It's there just before the tunnel with the eggs, aliens and explosive barrels.

The game is a lot of fun. I find it amazing. My only complaint is that you can kinda skip through some of the areas but it doesn't really bother me. The graphics are very nice and detailed. They fit perfectly within the Aliens universe. The derelict was very atmospheric too. I wish the player could spend more time in that level.

I wouldn't exactly call it amazing. The game resembles the old style Aliens arcade game from 20 years ago. That's what I was expecting, though.

I suppose what bothers me the most is how games companies have the nerve to charge £25-£30 for this which offers a couple of hours of gameplay, when the iphone has games for 99p which offer a lot more.

Alright, im in 3rd act right now and here;s what i think :

1. Game looks great, but im a fan of 2d old school action so its right up in my alley.
2. Marines moves are awesome, lots of actions to do, not your average run and jump character. Controls are great and responsive.
3. environment is really good, but doors and elevators get really repetitive after a while.
4. enemies are challenging, i've stumble upon alien workers, alien warriors, droids, soldiers, chestbusters, facehuggers, Alien Queen and "space jockey alien" . Boss fights (i've done 2 so far) are cool, pretty hard at first time .
5. Searching around Sulaco and Lv-426 is nice, with a lots of vent exploring.
6. Weapons are really cool (shotgun with upgrades is awesome, hell yea )
7. Lots of reading guys, many conversations between marines, although mostly about what to do next, where to go etc.

Fisrt act feels very nice, puts you in great atmosphere, although u should play it in the dark, its way more intense. we know what happens from the trailers and gamplay vides so nothing new if i tell you that you just search for survivors and answers for what happend on sulace, you find  survivor , fight boss, and we bring party to lv-426.  There you fight more and more enemies, search for explosives, destroy few things, and we get a little point and shoot game with apc. then another boss fight. 3rd is where thing start to get intresting storywise. at least for me cause i knew what to expect from first hour of the story. so We are back on the sulaco and... well no need to spoil , but it really doeasnt feel like the first act , althugh we're back where we started ( we got a lot of new areas to check , and story is gettin a lot better) .

I think for non-aliens fans this is a anotther good/very good 2d game. For myself and most of you guys, definetely something worth playing. It,s more like comic book aliens than movie like (we got to wait for colonial marines ) but i love it.

Very few games achieve that old arcade/action style successfully nowadays. And Infestation is one of them IMO. I also get the feeling that I'm rushing through the game and have left many areas unexplored so I'm already thinking of re-playing it. I rarely replay any games and that's what makes it amazing for me.

Does this mean that you already completed the game?  If so, how many hours did it take you?  Is it easy enough to complete the marines with all 19 characters surviving?  In sum, when is avpgalaxy going to put up their review?  LOL.

aight, im at the end of 4th act,  boss battle with infamous rhino alien. its hard as hell. It;s said that 69% of the game is completed so i guess there are 5-6 acts. it seems like story goes from Sulaco to lv-426 then back to sulaco , next to phobos research facility then probably back to sulaco again (there was 1/3 of the ship unexplored yet) .

Well , i was, but its was for a boss battle and the only part of the ship that you get to see is room with space jockey (the one from oryginal Alien) so nothing new. I wish there was a part where you explore the ship but thats not the case. kind of missed opportunity there, they should have done something like that. its like half of the game takes place on the sulaco, its just cut into parts, sulaco, something else, sulaco, something else and so on.

I've just done the Queen too. Lost 2 men to her. Really enjoying it so far.

Just finished level 2. Very very cool. And unlocked a knife game which I'll try once I find a save room.

Rightio. I'm on Phobos and I'm finally stuck on the boss. I've only got 2 marines left. Has anyone been able beat it?

theres a ladder down next to airlock activator computer, go down and activate anather airlock computer, then go down again etc. you got to activate like 4 computers on each side and then just run away to the right side and up the ladder.

I didn't even see the ladders.

I'm now onto the bull alien. These bosses are ridiculously hard. I can't seem to dodge any of its attacks. Tips?

I've got only one man at full health and the smartgun.

Lol. They really aren't. Perhaps we should change this to the "As Your Play Through" thread?

I had to loose a man to that boss. I just kept shooting, moving backwards as I shot. Once he came towards me, dodged or ran away and repeated.

Hey guys, looking for some help here from anyone a little further on in the game.

I can't find the third set of explosives on LV426, also don't have the map  :-[

Can anyone help?

I love how the flamethrower (the original Alien weapon IMO) is actually powerful!

Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu...Can you go back to Sulaco or something? I beat the Alien Queen (no Marines lost!) but I think I could've gone to so many areas it's not even funny. Now I'm somewhere else... :( Please, help...I mean I don't think I could've gone anywhere else at present, unless I collected some other items, which I was unable to by the way, but still....

There are also segments where you enter via ducts upon throwing a grenade, but sometimes they lead to nothing while you see there's something on the other side...Is there something I don't know? Some certain hot spots a'la Metroid you can blast off or jump somewhere, even if it's not seen?

Same here. So far only the first Alien Queen gave me a hard time. Probably due to it being the very first boss. In fact I've played large sections of the game with just one marine and no back up (I'm lazy to find more marines).

I played through the first level last night.

Spoiler
The setup is generallt acceptable with UPP seemingly responsible for the Sulaco being crawling with Aliens.  The characters are cliched right out the wazoo - but that's neither here nor there; I think you'll develop favourites over time.  The music is a little bombastic at times, but still suitable for this sort of game.  Couple of decent jump scares (where'd the cat come from?).  Once you get beyond shooting UPP robots, it gets much better - especially when you bag the tracker and use the flares.  Lost three of my four squad members killing the fecking Queen - I think I was doing it wrong.  It looks like you might be able to run past and climb up some platforms to help keep you out of the way.  There was a lot of the ship left unexplored though once I went to the next level which I thought was unusual, but so far I'm really digging the hell out of this game and can't wait to play more.

Well, I've finished the game at long last.

There's been a lot of chit chat about the length of the game but if anything, I felt it was too long. Most likely because I was tired of roaming around similar environments and the bosses being really difficult and drawn out. I was racing to finish it as quickly as possible. Hence, I never really paid attention to the text or the story, if there was one. Don't get me wrong, length is very important. The last DS game I played was Pokemon White and I spent 40 hours on that. Advance Wars Dual Strike, I spent over 170 hours playing. I guess it depends on how much you enjoy the game. This isn't really my cup of tea. And I only played it because it's an Aliens game. It's similar to the Metroid GBA games which I enjoyed back then but now, the game feels really dated. The graphics aren't anything special. The gameplay is what you'd expect. As I said before, you've got games on the iphone like Angry Birds costing a $1 and they're charging £25 for this? It's not wayforward's fault. I just wish they'd have developed it for a current system instead of one that came out 6 years ago. I'd give it 3/5 and that's been generous.

3/5
Title: Re: Fan Reviews/Questions
Post by: SM on Oct 09, 2011, 04:35:45 AM
With radiation being used to apparently explain the Crusher in the Colonial Marines companion game - will radiation also be the excuse for the Derelict being magically restored to it's former glory rather then being damaged like we see it in the Aliens SE?

And to think it really should be completely destroyed by this point.

Another continuity nitpick, in the first line of the intro text.  Bishop (341-B) apparently sent a transmission just before leaving LV-426, saying that 11 marines were killed.  He says the Sulaco left six weeks earlier.  Make that three weeks methinks...  And it's confused even further by him saying their ETA at Gateway is 498 hours, which is almost exactly three weeks, and therefore correct.

derp...

EDIT- Forgot to mention - really love the original chestburster sound effect they use.

ANOTHER EDIT - Finished.  Pretty pissweak ending I thought.  In fact the entire last level was disappointing.

Spoiler
Too much running backwards and forwards through the ship with not many Aliens too shoot, as Darkness mentioned.  The EVA stuff was novel, and challenging, but it really wasn't as fun as earlier levels.

I really did enjoy this game a lot, but I have some gripes with it.

Minor Ones:
-The weapons. For the most part they are fine and all, but the upgrades are, well, don't seem to do much outside of increased range and to a VERY small extent damage. I don't mind this too much, but then you have the shotgun. Only time I've lost a marine and had to rescue him from a hive in actual level game play is when I decided to give the weapon a run. The acid spray going all over and the reload time.... Just not worth it.
-The explosives. Basically comes down to two things: 1. Why so little ammunition? 2. Why not set it as default? Why have to select it every time you leave your save point?
-The stamina meter. For the most part I have nothing against it and is only bad in the fourth boss fight (see below). This also brings up a pet peeve I occasionally encounter where you have to hold another button to go faster. I understand marines being just human and all, but good lord they are slow without it. It's probably just me though.
-The L Button for "halting". Why? It's the same as not pressing down on a directional pad except you can't move out of the way.
-There could have been more variety outside of riding the tank and the zero-g suit (BTW I'm not counting the knife trick because it isn't in-game).

Major Ones:
-Too dang short. Do I need to explain? Really?
-Respawning enemies. This has officially become my new video gaming pet peeve. Why have them come back alive so many times? I don't mind the item respawning even if I found a lot of them useless, but every time you change a level through a tall elevator or get to a save point they come back. It's a waste of ammo and possibly health depending if them managed to land a hit or not.
-The Super Xenomorph Gorilla/Gorilla Alien/Ape Alien/Alien Ape/whatever you want to call it and no I'm not using "Rhino" because it isn't. This has to be one of the most frustrating bosses I've ever had to fight right up there with the Scorpion King (The Mummy Returns), Mr. Big (Narc), Shao Kahn (Mortal Kombat 3), and Henry Touchdown (No More Heroes). Everything you imagine bad goes wrong here:

-Save point is too far away
-Too much health
-Attacks too fast and strong
-You can't outrun/dodge this guy (stamina meter limits! Gah!)
-No health or ammunition boxes

To put it bluntly: You are f**ked. No way around it. It's a boss from hell plain and simple. You can't beat it without losing a marine or two. Sonic bosses aren't this cheap! Well okay, maybe Egg Viper from the first Sonic Adventures and every boss after Sand Scorpion in The Seven Secret Rings are more cheap, but the Super Gorilla isn't exactly far behind on that scale.

Quote-Respawning enemies.

That shat me too.  Mind you in that last level with tromping stem to stern in the Sulaco often crawling endlessly through airducts, I would've loved to shoot some respawned Aliens.

My Review:

Good:
+All of the classic weapons are there.
+The Power Loader scene was fun.
+Every character has their own personality. This goes a long way to "Saving" your favorite characters. My favorites was the "Southern Charm Guy", "Goth Chick", and really "Perky Valley Girl".
+The level design was top notch.
+I LOVED the new xenomorph types. The Gorilla Alien looked like the Kenner figure, the Space Jocky Alien was neat, so was the Super Queen, and Rhino.
+The aliens were fast too.
+I liked combination of motion tracker/mini-map.
+Movement and aiming was precise.
+The story is actually good! Way better than what I was expecting.
Bad
-It was so short! I beat it in less than a day, and it doesn't have much replay value.

Overall I would give this a 4.5/5 and recommend it to fans and those who just like a Castlevania style platform game.

What I liked:
-Classic side-scrolling gameplay
-The weapons
-The nostalgic settings (the Sulaco, LV-426, the Derelict)
-The Aliens-The marines and their back stories and personalities
-The challenge
-Not a bad plot either

What I didn't like:
-Only five levels!? Come on, give me more!

4/5

Played the game through and I really liked it. It feels like a really genuine attempt for once to make Aliens fans happy. It's just a bit too short I think.

Also, instead of the Aliens simply trying to kill you, it would've been fun and tense if instead they attacked you, but tried more to pull you into a vent or something so you could go back and rescue that character. Also I think the 4 person squad is a bit weird. When someone dies I have to go back to where I know a live Marine is at so I can get them to join me. It just didn't feel right.

Overall really fun game though, damn challenging bosses and a pretty good story. The best part is I had a really good time and I really don't like side scrollers.

Form an anal nitpicky fanboy perspective, the story was a let down.

The Sulaco is found in the middle of bumf**k nowhere, way off course (though I can accept the UPP did this).  The timeframe's not right.  The UPP setting up a major base on LV-426 was dopey.  The Derelict, supposedly destroyed at the end of Aliens, is in fact now completely repaired.  Going all the way back to Phobos seemed a bit silly.

It really just jumped all over the place with little rhyme or reason.

But stories are well behind on gameplay for mine.

Motion tracker showing you all Aliens in advance made the game too easy...Aliens NEVER appeared behind your back. There was little variety after some time. Even boss fights weren't inventive, I've seen a lot more inventive ones even 20 years ago. Overall difficulty wasn't too high bar certain boss battles, there was little incentive for exploring, there were too many weapon upgrades - you could even upgrade your pistol and every single primary weapon, and there were still quite a few of them. Backtracking was - after some time - mostly boring, as nothing's been changing on your way back. And yes, it was quite short, but not very short.

That being said it was a decent, very solid game, 7/10.

Although the tracker was kinda cheating at times telling you where Aliens were - there were many times in earlier levels that I was grateful for it.  ;D

I know it was damaged at the beginning in the SE, but were we ever given any indication that the nuke would have taken it out? It is, after all, a foreign material.

"Ellen Ripley died trying to wipe this species out.  For all intents and purposes, she succeeded."

If the Derelict was a viable source of eggs, they wouldn't be fumbling around with 200 year old DNA.

Even if the nuke didn't take it out, Ripley's just going to up and leave without making sure?  This coupled with the fact they never went back in the next two films would indicate it was a non-issue.

But on the other hand in this version of events - coupled with A:CM - the nuke didn't even destroy the AP Station let alone anything else.  And since radiation made rhino Aliens - it also apparently restored the Derelict to it's former glory.  With squillions of eggs.

Cue, the Defenders of the EU (TM).

QuoteEven if the nuke didn't take it out, Ripley's just going to up and leave without making sure?
You think she really had time to make sure? The atmosphere processor was about to explode. Her priority was "get off the planet and not die", and then she likely assumed it had been destroyed in the blast.
She ended up being mistaken. She also put everyone in cryosleep without checking the Sulaco to make sure there were no Aliens onboard, and look where that got everyone. :P

QuoteThis coupled with the fact they never went back in the next two films would indicate it was a non-issue.
It was a non-issue, other EU sources establish that. Just because it wasn't destroyed in 'Aliens' doesn't mean it wasn't destroyed at some other point in the 200-year gap before Resurrection.

QuoteWith squillions of eggs.
The Derelict already had a ton of eggs in it, it not being destroyed wouldn't have changed that.

None of this should be new material, it's all stuff that's been brought up in like 18 different threads before. :P

Doesn't look like it (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pOTG2wg6LHo#)
There just seem to be sort of indentations on the side of the head.

Beat the game the other day, there were a few things I didn't like:

1. The ending was way, way too abrupt, and the game was too short. I wanted it to keep going

2. The different dialogue mechanic was really cool, but I wish I could have recruited more than 4 Marines and then just kept them in reserve at save points and rotate them into my squad whenever I wanted. I'd still have the same 4-man squad as "active", but I'd be able to go to a save point and swap out any of the other Marines into the active squad just so I could experience their dialogue. As it stands the only way for me to see some of the other dialogue changes is to strategically get some of my Marines killed so I can rotate in other Marines I've found, and that feels like a waste of time. Really the only time I got to experience different dialogue was against the final boss, as I had the forethought to start off with a different Marine for the fight each time I got completely wiped out and had to start over. :P

3. The boss fights were ridiculous and way, way harder than anything else in the game. It was hard to tell if I was even dealing effective damage against them sometimes, or how close I was to killing them. I lost 1 Marine fighting the Jockey-Alien, and then with my next Marine it took 2 bullets and the boss went down. I was pretty pissed that I was THAT close to winning before my Marine bought it, and had I known I likely would have played smarter in order to keep him alive.

4. The flamethrower was the best weapon, hands down. Infinite ammo, decent range, and pushes Aliens back? AND it opens hive-locked doors? It was my go-to weapon from the moment I found it right up to the final boss, there really wasn't any reason to use any other weapon. Not to mention I kept it on hand in case I encountered hive-locked doors, so that I didn't have to backtrack to a save point just to swap out my gun for the flamethrower and then backtrack back to the door and open it. Making it replace my primary weapon made me never want to put it down, and having it be so effective as a weapon was just a bonus. I guess what I'm saying is I wish the weapons were balanced better, or if the flamethrower had been an alternate "tool" you could carry in addition to the other weapons.  :P

All in all I had a lot of fun with the game. It was flawed, but fun. I'm glad I bought it.

Hi Guys I am new to this web site.  I am one of the biggest Alien fanatics ever, my friends call me the librarian or the movie store. Anyway my question is for all of you does anything in this game contradict what has been seen to happen in Aliens Colonial marines?  I unfortunately cant play the game, no ds.

In addition could someone please tell me and post me all the diffrent Aliens in the game, what is this Alien Rhino I keep hearing about?  On the xenopedia we already have up the Gorilla and Gorilla Pratarien Alien but no one on xenopedia has mentioned much else about the game including this Rhino Alien I hear all over the place.

It's not known if it'll contradict A:CM.  They're supposed to be companion pieces so one wouldn't think they'd conflict.  However the Sephora in the Infestation game intercepts the Sulaco near Gamma Leporis - way off course.  While all the press for A:CM says it's intercepted at Fiorina, then flown back to LV-426.  Plus in Infestation they're Sulaco seems to fly al over the place - including back to Mars.

As for the Rhino Alien - I don't think it's bred out of an actual rhino; it just looks like it is.

Can any EU Infestation owners chime in on their Instruction Manual?  The US release was 3 pages of BW text :(  Did you guys get color?  Full manual?

My UK manual is in black and white too.

So I've started replaying this. Again, really enjoying it and my opinion since my review hasn't changed at all.

I re-beat Aliens infestation on the DS for the first time in over a decade.

I still like it quite a bit; the sprite work is excellent, the sound effects are on point, and the combat mostly feels solid (shooting it out with human enemies behind cover turned into me vaulting the cover and blasting them at point blank). The weapons feel varied but still have a level of parity with each other such that I found myself switching between them fairly regularly just to have different gameplay experiences without feeling like I was crippling myself.

Once you get a handle on the game, it almost becomes too easy unless you get ambushed by a bunch of Aliens at once and get cornered. There's a couple difficulty spikes (the pressure suit segment was rough, the game isn't a very good platformer), especially the boss fights. Maybe I wasn't taking the time to learn attack patterns enough, but I found myself brute-forcing the fights a bit.
The coolest boss fight is easily the Jockey-Alien, it just looks rad and its animations are cool.

The "collect Marines" gimmick is neat but it feels half-baked - you can only have 4 at a time, so you have to either leave extras behind (except for on the Sulaco which you return to a few times) or intentionally get your Marines killed to pick up new people; the game basically penalizes you for playing well and withholds one of its more interesting features unless you suck or sabotage yourself. I'd have much preferred if I could have collected everyone like pokemon and swapped between them at save stations at my leisure.

It has metroidvania elements, but it's all very rudimentary and linear to the point where I'm hesitant to call it a full metroidvania. That's not a knock on the game, it's still fun, and the metroidvania elements work, it just feels like "babby's first metroidvania".

It's still a really cool game, although it's a little short and doesn't offer a ton in the way of replay other than using different Marines at different story moments just to see how the dialogue changes. I'd have been interested to know how it would have meshed with Aliens: Colonial Marines had that project not gone off the rails.
