Title: Alien's Sir Ian Holm Dies Aged 88
Post by: Corporal Hicks on Jun 19, 2020, 12:28:43 PM

It is with much sadness that I have to report to you all the passing of another member of the Alien family. The Guardian has confirmed with the agent of Sir Ian Holm, Alien’s very own Ash, that the legendary actor has passed away this morning.

"It is with great sadness that the actor Sir Ian Holm CBE passed away this morning at the age of 88," they said. "He died peacefully in hospital, with his family and carer," adding that his illness was Parkinson's related. "Charming, kind and ferociously talented, we will miss him hugely."

Alien's Sir Ian Holm Dies Aged 88

For many of us at Alien vs. Predator Galaxy, Sir Ian Holm is known for portraying Ash, but he had a very illustrious career in film and theatre. Aside from his role as Ash, he is perhaps best known to modern audiences for portraying Bilbo Baggins in Peter Jackson’s adaptations of J.R.R Tolkien’s Hobbit and Lord of the Rings books.

Ian is survived by his fourth wife, de Stempel, and five children from previous marriages. The thoughts of the Aliens vs. Predator Galaxy staff and community go out to Sir Holm's family and friends. Rest in peace, Ian.

I never had the chance to meet Ian Holm which I really regret. It's so sad to see so many of the Alien family leave us lately. :( Rest in peace, Ian. Hope you're at that Nostromo breakfast table with John and Harry and Bolaji.

When I first heard about this I was hoping it was not another covid case but from what I read, he died in hospital and was suffering from parkinsons.

88 is a ripe old age and he made the most of it, so many great movies came from him. RIP.

Not to forget his excellent turn in Chariots of Fire (for which he got an Academy Award Nomination and BAFTA Win) that was filmed just after Alien. The Fifth Element was also another great sci-fi film in which he starred prominently:

He seemed a bit reclusive, didn't attend conventions and stuff, so understandable. I understand he also declined voice work for Alien: Isolation?

Oh no, terrible news. Unfortunately we're reaching times when a lot of our aged favorites are falling ill or passing away and that is very unfortunate as we're reminded that time passes and everything ends. Very very sad news, he was a great actor

His portrayal of Ash will haunt me forever. He was just so sinister ("I can't lie about your chances...but you have my sympathies"). It's hard to believe the same actor played Bilbo Baggins. RIP to a true legend.

Did Creative Assembly ever say why they declined?

Although I suppose high caliber actors like Sir Holm and Sir Hurt might not necessarily have had the time or inclination for voice work.

Sad news indeed. He was always a highlight of anything he starred in. Ash was obviously great, but I really liked him in The Fifth Element too, and he was the definitive King Lear.

Thankfully we'll always have his films, and in those he'll live forever.

Per CdL, Ian politely declined (through his agent). Kotto wanted very much to be involved, but the schedules just never worked out.

Sad to see another great go. In Kenneth Branagh's autobiography, he talked about how all the English stage actors would joke about the Ian Holm: 'Anything You Can Do, I Can Do Less Of' School of Acting.  :D Funny, but also true.

Clear skies, Ian.

From memory he was going through a messy divorce at the time of Alien and doesn't seem to particularly enjoy recalling that period all that much. I don't think it even gets much of a mention in his biography.

I believe he also suffered a nervous breakdown in 1980?
