Oh man, I didn't catch the sampling from Jóhannsson at all. That's fantastic.

Heads up for people with HBO Max. There are three BTS featurettes listed under the "Extras" tab for episode one titled "Raised by Wolves: A Ridley Scott World," "Raised by Wolves: Decoded," and "Raised by Wolves: From Sketch to Screen."

You can also access the first episode of the accompanying podcast from there, which was a pretty intetesting listen.

This series needs to be a movie or a franchise.  8)

Interesting thing - Mother introduced herself to Mithraics  as Lamia.

Lamia was a woman in Greek mythology, who became a child-eating monster after her children were destroyed by Hera, who learned of her husband Zeus's trysts with her. Hera also afflicted Lamia with sleeplessness so she would anguish constantly, but Zeus gave her the ability to remove her own eyes.

"Lamia" was also used as a bogey word to frighten and discipline children.

The lamia has been ascribed serpentine qualities, which some commentators believe can be firmly traced to mythology from antiquity, and they have found analogues in ancient texts that could be designated as lamiai (or lamiae) which are part-serpent beings.   [wikipedia]

Loving it

Interesting fact.

The song begins with fading tunes of late Jóhann Jóhannsson's - Song For Europa

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ngUnLL4CAck

Obviously Ben Frost was quite influenced by Jóhannsson's work when he composed the OST.
Furthermore, this song is from  Jóhannsson's album Orphée, and Orpheus is also associated with mystery religions concerned with the afterlife, such as the mysteries of Cybele, Dionysus, and Mithras. [wikipedia]

Quote...Album's (Orphée) overarching theme of Orpheus and that myth's themes of thresholds and crossing borders. The lonely girl's voice reciting seemingly random numbers became the voice of Euridyce, a voice from beyond, from elsewhere.

I like these small details.

I might like a Battlestar Galactica style twist, so that what we see in Raised By Wolves was the future of a very ancient mankind, which inspired myths and legends here, on "Earth 2.0"

From the BTS featurettes on Max, I was able to grab a few BTS shots of the creature. HBO Max blocks screencapping, unfortunately, so the best I was able to do were a few pics of the screen with my phone.

Ridley Scott Tells Us Why He Directed 'Raised by Wolves'

So showrunner Aaron Guzikowski has a five season plan for the series, should it take off and get renewed.

For those without HBO Max that want to give the series a try, the first episode has been officially made free on YouTube. Not sure if it works outside of the US or not, but worth a shot:

Watched episode one last night and wow I was pretty blown away by it. Ridley is really great at the slow build to climactic action madness haha. Watching episode 2 once I get off work. Really like that they released 3 episodes to start. Gives us a chance to still binge but also keeps us discussing week to week.

Man, I love the intro. The first few seconds of it actually remind me of "Part 8" from Twin Peaks: The Return.

Just finished episode 2, wrapping up Ridley's directorial portion of the season and these episodes really felt like a spiritual successor to Prometheus and Covenant. I even feel that episode 1 was more akin to Prometheus and episode 2 more akin to Covenant.

Spoiler
There was even that Neomorph-esque alien in episode 2!

Really enjoying it and about to start episode 3!

This series has so far convinced me that Ridley Scott could have done something truly special if he'd made the Alien prequels as a long format series rather than two movies. He needs the time. I truly believe Prometheus and Covenant fall short because he simply can't squash his vision, along with all the corporate meddling that comes with the profession, into the runtime of a film.

Spoiler

I'm not sure when the series is officially set, might have missed a mention, but it certainly could fit into the post-Resurrection era of the Aliens universe, white blooded Androids and all.
Edit: by my count, based on what was said in Episode 2, it takes place maybe in 2157?

Also, don't know if Scott has any interest in anime at all, but the scene with Mother on the colony ship looks like it could have been ripped straight from Elfen Lied. XD

Looking forward to more.

This ^

Character development, exploration of themes; there you have the potential of a true gem. Preferably with the budget of Game of Thrones, Westworld or Mandalorian8)

This is the author of Annihilation. I adore the film, but haven't read his trilogy of books yet...
