Fun fact: Ridley used parts of Isao Tomita's synth interpretation of Holst's, The Planets as a temp track for Alien. Ridley was also very keen on hiring Tomita to compose the entire score for Alien. Engineers use flute of god Pan (only god who died), and that flute was also used by Pythagoras (Musica universalis/music of the sphere; read his philosopy of numbers!), so we have here great symbolic imoptance ;)
This one is mystical and could be interesting to hear some background flute melodies in Engineers theme in Covenant...
I also presume and I am very sure that we are going to see someone new (ultimate creator), so I m still collecting some classical and contemporary (Electronic) music that could be very well integrated in Covenant soundtrack. I hope that Harry Gregson-Williams knows how to bring together creepy and mystical non-orchestral (organic and mechanoid hybrid sounds) tones with classical orchestral music... I liked disonant and polymorphic sounds and use of strings, bass, Glockenspiel and ominous brass and flute sections in original... so it would be nice to emphasis use of that music in Covenant because it has great philosophical and mystical note to it. I myself would introduce one or two note of organ sound because of atmospheric background that organ (organic sound of breath and universe) very well produce and then combine it with some deep (basso) choir singing one or two deep notes + all above mentioned.

Very good topic. I have not finished listen, but there are already some very good things. May be too predictable or conventional. It takes something more contemporary and with a cinematic approach in my opinion. Something between Alien and Prometheus, while trying something new.
I had already said, but I loved the soundtrack of Prometheus. Streitenfeld did a very good job, combining organic and mechanical sound. "Weyland" is a great theme, intimidating, strange and even disturbing. Mention to "Invitation", "Planet", "Earth" and "Space Jockey" ...
But the best is the two themes made by Harry Gregson-Williams. It was in perfect harmony with the images of the film. Wonderful, deep, human, mysterious, powerful ...
HGW is perfect choice for this.

This critic is not so fond of Streitenfeld work on Prometheus, but writer of this article writes that he succeeded with eeriness and spooky atmospheres created by mixing many sound textures and recording orchestra playing backward and then digitally flipping that whole track in order to achieve some unsettling melody color... Streitenfeld who also was Zimmers pupil (as Williams) is more of a technician than composer of orchestral music (as critic says), and that's why Ridley brought Williams to compose practically the most important track of the movie - LIFE (and best if I may say). That move shows overall Ridleys distrust in Streitenfeld method... but dont forget that Ridley did the same to Goldsmith in Alien and in Legend!

Harry Gregson-Williams' soundtrack for the Martian is brilliant though. It's subtle and gives a lot of texture and mood to the film without shoving it in your face. Here's one of the tracks that would sound good in an Alien film:

This one from Martian is also good... there is some elements of Vangelis, Holst, Goldsmith,....
all that in a modern (electronic) variant. But I think that it isn dark enough; Covenant need mysterious,
grandiose themes (like Life) and very dark (mechanoid hybrid) themes with combined orchestra and some
odd sound textures and electronic elements.
I'm hoping for more action this time to make up for the nonsense/fail of last movie..lets not do a second in a row slow movie...

Horn often represent the trumpet of God or angels and can represent human rebellious and disbalanced nature...!

I remember Cameron using Aram's ballet suite in his movie, though I wonder how many people recognized it. It's definitely a cool nod to 2001. Classical music and sci-fi are made for each other, I think. Some of my favorite moments in Alien were the use of classical music, like Mozart or Howard Hanson in juxtaposition with Jerry's wonderful score (and his music from Freud). I hope Convenant has a equally diverse and varied musical palette.

And this was just a stupid argumentation, because Tomita actually did several film scores before! Even for a sci-fi film (The Prophecies of Nostradamus; 1974), but maybe they just weren't very aware of that (japanese films were often overlooked and somehow mishandled in most parts of the western world back then) - man I really like Tomita's film music works (especially from that Nostradamus-flick and Zatoichi and the One-armed Swordsman; 1971) and it would just be awesome to hear his outstanding music in the original Alien film! 8)

Funny I was coming in here to post Stockhausen. I'd love the soundtrack to be purely old school Elektronische Musik or a drone sort of thing. Almost zero melody. Point almost descending into Merzbow style electronics. No human voices, no traditional instruments, no true rhythmic portions. something really removed and inhuman sounding.

Ridley (and his team) works very fast , he could very well release the film in March.
For example the shooting of The Martian is finished early March , the movie was released in early Octobre. Less than 7 months of post production.
I also know that Scott will shoot a new film before the release of Covenant.
Maybe they will realise it earlier... :-[ :-*

Too early. Covenant will have a lot of visual effects shots, much more so than The Martian. From March onward would be more realistic.
And while principle photography is over there will most likely be additional pick-ups and/or reshoots.

subtle sound/melody of redemption too!
I typically prefer my Scifi/Horror way more synthetic sounding than traditional Western Classical sounding. A weird, oppressive variation on that theme could be really interesting. Like a Glenn Branca-ish take on it would be interesting.
The soundtrack is very important in any film's overall success. In fact, sometimes it stands out as better than the movie! The two Prometheus tracks you posted, "Life" and "We Were Right" are the best tracks on the whole album.
What I would want in the soundtrack are two things: Return to the roots via scary space opera (I really enjoy Goldsmith's original score, especially the main theme) and make the OST stand by itself. The only criticism of James Horner's score of Aliens is it tends to feel like the movie is driving the score rather than the other way around.

That is why I like it, Horner knew enough to take a back seat to the imagery on screen (or was told to do that by Cameron). Aliens isn't a film, to me, that needs a over the top score to help it.
I love when action films use more minimalist music cues. The music almost feels oppressive in a bad way in modern action movies. With so much going on visually and auditory (between sound effects and music) at the same time that it becomes a blur.
I think it is situational and the music has to be used to answer questions like "does this need something to add excitement or suspense?" If it needs a strong soundtrack like that, than sure go for it. Just make the score match the movie. If it stands on its own great, if not and it works great.

I would like to see some dark avant garde classic music mixed with super experimental jazz; noisy and intricate, dirty and rusty, dissonant and non-melodic, but atmospheric and highly ambient. All of that combined with more traditional sci-fi score classic music. Enoch how do you know these 'sounds' will be in covenant? It's just that by saying -"Sounds of ancient instrument used in Alien to be heard in Covenant" you are implying that you
know something the rest of us don't know about the soundtrack in the new film. Which I doubt, as the film hasn't even been scored yet.
Just heard way back when Harry was still on board that they plan to
use some instruments already used in Alien soundtrack... so this
is just my assumption :) Now, everything is changed
Let me remind you, Shankh , didgeridoo, serpent, Waterphone, all
of these instruments were used in Alien! :)

Ive heard that the music is minimal and industrial. A lot of metal on metal sounds.
That description comes from someone whos seen a bunch of footage and has a good knowledge of avant garde music.
Thats ok... I like industrial, ambient, electronic...
But despite that, they can always use some conventional classical/orchestral music for the ending...

Stings, a lot of strings and bass flutes, taking those information into account we can conclude that it is indeed going
to be dark, "metallic"/industrial in a sense but also very much natural, orchestral... BIOMECHANICAL music. :)
I hope the soundtrack will have some distinctive melodies/themes, but I'm afraid not.
His soundtrack for Macbeth is nice, though it's also a bit of a drag. I hope Covenant sounds different.
Thats why I mentioned some classical influences... because of
them Jerry Goldsmith was a master of movie soundtracks...
You can not be a GREAT musician (no matter the genre) without the
knowledge of classical music and its essence.
Melodies, rhythms... etc. Todays composers try to depict whats visible on the screen (thus the melodies and themes are two dimensional and too anemic), once they used to look beyond, they depicted something deeper, something hidden within. As if they tried to connect single soul with the vast spaces of the cosmos in order to allow us (the viewers) to grasp some greater knowledge beyond the screen and visible images.

I would be very happy if he tried to convey some of the original Alien melodies, tunes and ideas...
For example, Allan Pettersson (1911-1980), greatest Swedish composer, shortly after the composition of above mentioned symphony no.7, wrote this to Leif Aare, his friend and biographer (published in Nutida Musik), with his direct style : "The mankind today is a little boy starving on this earth, right now, and the music nowadays, it is the moaning of this child in this fair for vultures. This is what has been done by the adult man, the fatty and twisted man".
This is obvious example how true artist always tries to depict the deepest emotions and things which affects us all. They do not focus on one individual phenomenon but on the whole system... not only on one particular image but rather on the series of images and their deepest meaning.

Like that simple ending with strings, peaceful but bearing some uncertainty and gloominess.
Thats why Howard Hanson's second symphony "The Romantic" worked in the ending of Alien.
It is triumphant, calm, peaceful you can feel the element of relief in the geginning... but as it progresses it all grows slower
towards the end and turning into discomfort and anxiety... the fear for the future. Thats why its called romantic... containing both
specters of the feelings. Jerry's track intended for the end is also great but it only focuses on the aspect
of mysterious, on the uncertainty and pain, there is NOT that triumphant part, a melody of Ripley psychological relief.

Low strings, and that horns but primarily mysterious trumpets, it almost
feels like Jerry is trying to ask the question is it really over, this was only one monster,
imagine 100 of them... In his music you can almost feel the fear of unknown, of vast universe
lying in front of Ripley.

Only the use of pure ambiance and metallic sounds and tunes is not enough for Alien movie.
With such "sounds" and soundscapes (that is not real soundtrack and musical composition) you can only depict one aspect of the atmosphere and maybe action but not psychological aspects of the characters which is in my opinion the most important thing to depict with soundtrack. Hope you all agree.
You can use music like (non-orchestral) this to convey and explore some emotions,
but I always feel like there is some small but equally important element missing.

I think this film might have delivered the very best score for an Alien film yet, that would have to placed second, only after Alien, just because how freaking influential it was. My favourites are The Medbay of course, Face Hugger, then Command Override (an emotional zenith of the film), but also Dead Civilization. Jed Kurzel did such an outstanding job. I can't praise him enough. Gregson-Williams, far more well-known composer wouldn't be able to match it. He'd be too conventional, too reliant on traditional elements.
