You can't really call anything creaated before Prometheus as a rip-off though.

Requel: (https://en.m.wiktionary.org/wiki/requel) A movie which revisits the subject matter of an earlier film but is not a remake or a linear continuation of its plot (i.e. a sequel or prequel).

There is also a thing called spiritual successor (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spiritual_successor), although it doesn't fit too much in this thread. But I do think Ridley's upcoming 'Raised by Wolves' TV series (https://www.avpgalaxy.net/forum/index.php?topic=60788.180) is like a spiritual successor of what Scott had in mind for Covenant 2.

Also, ignore the pareidolia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pareidolia), because it is mostly for fun ;D

But how can a movie made before Prometheus, rip off Prometheus? ???

Prometheus rips off Planet of the Vampires (as does Alien), not the other way around. Or is the thread also for films that inspired the prequels?

Something like that.

Thread title: "Alien Prequel Ripoffs, Requels & Promethesque Trivia"

Requel: (https://en.m.wiktionary.org/wiki/requel) A movie which revisits the subject matter of an earlier film but is not a remake or a linear continuation of its plot (i.e. a sequel or prequel).

I may be wrong, but I'd say that Prometheus is a ripoff of "Planet of the Vampires" and a requel of "Mission to Mars".
Title: Re: Alien Prequel Ripoffs, Requels & Promethesque Trivia
Post by: SiL on Jul 15, 2019, 05:45:42 AM
Right, but a Prometheus requel would be a movie that is a requel of Prometheus, not a film that Prometheus is a requel of. Again, it would refer to films that came after, not before.

(Like I get what you mean now, just that it's worded confusingly).

Fair enough, but as I said before (convenient, I know) this thread is also for movies (or other formats of fiction) that inspired the prequels.

Anyway, here is a Tintin comic book called "Flight 714 to Sydney." You can find the kind of stuff you may expect from Prometheus: a millionaire on his personal and luxury aircraft, monolithic heads, a temple, ancient aliens and a flying saucer. The story: (http://en.tintin.com/albums/show/id/46/page/0/0/flight-714)

QuoteFlight 714 (1968) , is the interrupted voyage, the hijacking which will turn everything upside down, Tintin and his friends' foray into the unknown, in a surreal world highlighted with telepathic phenomena. It is also the incredible contact with extra-terrestrials and the emerging from a dream ... or is it a dream?? Jakarta, the last stop for the Boeing and flight 714 en route to Sydney.

It's said that the comic book was inspired by a book about fringe archeology and ancient astronauts lore called "Le Livre des Secrets Trahis" ("The Book of Betrayed Secrets").

Promethesque Trivia

These are pieces by the Italian artist Alessandro Sicioldr. He describes his art as "visions coming from the unconscious mind", and he even refers to Twin Peak in one of his pieces. However, white and bald humanoids are a common theme in many of his works. I find them quite similar to the Prometheus and Covenant Engineers. But it's not just baldness or skin color, there is something in the nose design too.

I'm now picturing the Deacon watching that movie, attempting to battle two Preds ninja-style, and being held back with one hand to his head while futilely swinging with is hands, unable to reach.

I guess these Japanese filmmakers wanted an alien monster as cheap as possible. So they went with the dinosaur man and then added some Xenomorph aesthetic to make it look iconic or something. And as for the Deacon, well, the little guy has a reptilian look in some shots anyway, almost like a velocirapor

Sheridan/Mondoshawan concept for Luc Besson's "The Fifth Element" by Patrice Garcia (1992)

Quote from: Alien ExplorationsDuring the development of Luc Besson's Fifth Element, for the benevolant space faring race known as the Mondoshawans, also known as the Sheridans, Patrice Garcia provided a concept design for one of the entities, that roughly resembled the Space Jockey in that it had a large upper body shell and a helmet with a trunk like proboscis. Inside appeared to be a humanoid being.

Quote from: Alien ExplorationsIt is said that Giger was given a rhinoceros skull to use when making Alien but I suspect that he had an elephant' skull to use instead or as well. However the head shown here also resembles the headgear from the Talhoffer diving suit design from the Thott manuscript from the 15th Century which displays various designs for various weapons of war barely imagined to have existed in modern day perception.

Quote from: WikipediaObliterator is a side-scrolling arcade adventure computer game published by Psygnosis in 1988. It was released for Amiga, Atari ST, ZX Spectrum, Amstrad CPC, and MS-DOS.

The game begins when the main character Drak is teleported into the alien spaceship that is approaching the earth. The objective of the game is to destroy the spaceship by finding certain objects from the ship. When the self-destruction is active, Drak has to find an escape shuttle before the spaceship blows up in order to survive.

Quote from: Alien ExplorationThe figure stretching around the edge of the tableau is inspired by depictions of the Egyptian sky goddess Nut, who often has Geb the god of the earth and fertility lying below, sometimes with his male member erect which so happens to be placed where it looks almost as if it inspired Giger with his depiction of the chest bursting from the victim image. Geb was also a god who imprisoned the dead in his body. The goddess is also often depicted being supported by the god Shu who raised the goddess into the heavens, but is replaced in Giger's painting by support bars instead.

Odyssey's Black Blood

Quote from: BBCWithin the chronicles of Hercules and his Twelve Labors, Greek mythology provides an interesting chronicle of biological weaponry. When Hercules found himself pitted against the Hydra his typical weapons proved useless as the Hydra thrived off of its own injuries, as a result Hercules dipped his weapons in the blood of the Hydra creating powerful poisoned weapons which led him to victory. As the stories of the Greek hero continue, the use of Hydra venom in other ventures and battles continues. The mythological use of biological weapons, however, was far from simply fantastical. Other instances of poisoned weapons in the Greek world were chronicled through Homer in the Iliad and the Odyssey. Homer's description of "black blood" referred to the blood of soldiers struck with poisoned weapons. The tales of the Trojan War contain numerous other counts of weapons being poisoned and despite numerous attempts by the Greeks to claim poisoned weapons were barbaric and only used by enemies fails to hold up to the prevalence of poisoned weaponry in literature, art, and archeological findings.

Mythology Meets History: Poisoned Weapons in Ancient Greece

The legend of Hercules using the poison of a monster as a weapon, makes me wonder if one of the pathogen's raw materials is an unknown creature.

Eitr, Origin of Life & Fatal Poison

Quote from: Wikipedia"Eitr is a mythical substance in Norse mythology. This liquid substance is the origin of all living things: the first giant Ymir was conceived from eitr. The substance is supposed to be very poisonous and is also produced by Jörmungandr (the Midgard serpent) and other serpents."

Eitr - Norse mythology

Quote from: Tomb Raider WikiEitr plays a big role in Tomb Raider: Underworld and Lara comes across an abundance of this mythological substance in the game. The eitr is responsible for the creation of Thralls, which are dead creatures that have been exposed to eitr for a prolonged period. During the course of the game, the eitr is shown to produce undead thralls as guardians, assumed to be victims who had fallen or been thrown into the eitr in the past.

Ichor - Source of immortality for the Gods, poisonous and deadly for mortals

Quote from: Greek Mythology.comIchor was the golden fluid that flowed in the veins of gods and immortals, in Greek mythology. It was also believed that it was toxic to mortals, killing them instantly. Ichor also ran through the single vein that Talos had, a giant bronze man with wings that was seen in Ancient Crete. He was responsible for guarding Europa and hurled rocks against anyone who came close. He died when the Argonauts went to Crete after they had retrieved the Golden Fleece; Medea removed the nail that controlled the flow of ichor, which drained from Talos and killed him.

Deadly Ancient Canisters:

Scorpion Bombs and Snake Pods

Quote from: National Geographic via SmithsonianWant to keep your enemies at bay? How about throwing a jar of scorpions at them? Well, that's exactly what some ancient people did, National Geographic writes:

"In the second century, the inhabitants of the fortress city of Hatra—in what is now Iraq—managed to hold off an attacking Roman army by hurling pots full of deadly scorpions onto the legionnaires."

Here's How to Make a Scorpion Bomb

Quote from: BBCThen there is the use of snakes as biological weapons. There is at least one historical record of snakes being unleashed during a naval battle, by Hannibal fighting the Eumenes.

The Strange Inspiration Behind Greek Myths

Who said that an AI cannot be useful for archeology?

Or more importantly...

Who said we haven't seen that recently in science fiction?  ;D

Quote from: The VergeScientists from Japan have used machine learning for the first time to identify a new figure among the ancient motifs of Peru's Nazca Lines.

The illustration, known as a geoglyph, is thought to date to between 100 BC and 500 AD, and was made by removing the dark stones of the Nazca Desert to reveal the white sand beneath. It's small, just five meters in height, and it shows a humanoid figure grasping a cane or club. Like the other drawings in the Nazca Desert, its exact function is unknown, but its discovery next to an ancient path suggests it might have been used as a waypoint.

I still need to see watch it once I got some time. However, while the film has been compared to many works of science fiction, including some classics ones, there are some people claiming that it is as if "Prometheus meet Even Horizon with a twist at the end".

Can't believe I only just realised this is a riff on the iconic cover of the original AVP comic run!

Later repurposed for the SNES game.

Wish it was anywhere near on par with the original.

I think I had already shared a similar image of a jockey-like helmet worn by a comic character, but hadn't done much research on the story. This one from here first appeared in the SANDMAN: Master of Dreams comic from DC in 1989. That makes it impossible for it to have been influenced by the prequels, but on the other hand there is ALIEN from 1979. 🤔

Anyway, check the description below. 👇

Although there is no alien baby here, there is a somewhat familiar scene in the movie Sillent Runner (1972).

Edit: In addition, the design of the spaceships is similar to the USCSS Covenant.

In Lost in Space (2018) s1 ep10 'Danger, Will Robinson' , Will Robinson's Mother lures their alien Robot, who has become hostile towards them, into the cargo bay and knocks him into space...

Then a second alpha alien robot arrives to the Jupiter 2. As the second alien robot is about to kill Will, his Robot remembers their friendship and saves Will, hurtling both itself and the second one into space.

The whole sequence reminded me of the final confrontation in Covenant.

Also, there's a repair scene in space and the Lost in Space suits are very similar to the Prometheus ones. Surprisingly enough, Janty Yates had nothing to do with it.
