Considering the amount of work that went into the sets, what could have happened to them? Did they just get dismantled? This brings up another question, what exactly were they made out of?

Yes, they were dismantled.

A variety of materials, depending on what the set calls for. The frames are mostly wood, and then detailing added in different materials such as foam, styrofoam, ceramic, plastic, etc.

A few parts of the sets ended up in the hands of private collectors, a few have turned up over the years. Stuff gets torn down and thrown out but occasionally they're salvaged by dumpster divers or the studio or FX studios hang onto them and they get sold later.

Some of the detailing pieces like the bas relief sculptures can be found on prop store listings floating around.
