Title: We Almost Got a Newt FPS
Post by: Nukiemorph on Feb 11, 2020, 06:45:34 AM
Apparently an Aliens sequel FPS starring a grown Newt was in talks before the Disney buyout.

Nothing of value lost, if 20th Century Fox nearly greenlit it, I'm glad for Disney, at the minute anyway, 20th Century Studios' starting out good.

I'd like to get a t-shirt that says "Newt's dead. Get over it."

But that upsets people.

Maybe this game would have tied in with the alternate ending of The Predator.

It's honestly not any more absurd than having Amanda Ripley in a game. But an android named Casey? I.dunno about that.

It really is though, Amanda Ripley passes away by the time of Aliens and Alien³ but anything before them, and after Alien's malleable.

Well, I like the idea. Why not? If you like Alien 3 go watch the film. If you want options - please welcome.

But.. Earth, man. What a s@@thole. Even Ridley said: "Aliens on Earth - it's boring".

Plus, previous BKP game - LawBreakers was of rather dubious quality.

Look even if you want to bring Rebecca Jorden/Newt, Dwayne Hicks and Ellen Ripley back you don't do it any other way apart from on film. Seriously, I'd ideally want James Cameron and David Fincher back, together. And, dubious, is putting it lightly.

I'd really honestly rather Rebecca Jorden/Newt, Dwayne Hicks and Ellen Ripley all stay in the graveyard, but if you've got to do it, you've got one chance to make it worthwhile. Do it professionally with the people who deserve to, all the first three Alien films created parts of the franchise so iconic, parts of them exist in everything the franchise releases now. Personally one of the reasons I think to get it right an alternate sequel requires James Cameron or David Fincher, or both, anything else just feels wrong.

I just don't care about canon. Films are films. They are primary. Everything else: games, books, comics is just a great opportunity to have fun and tell a "different" story. They have no effect on the primary story. Nothing to worry about.

I'm at this point not convinced an Alien game announcement is anything but a fever dream seeing nothing but Blackout can ever come out. You release a new Alien product every time you sneeze but for some reason can't get a video-game to happen.

The whole series should be rebooted.  Including the f**ktardness of multiple generations of alien survivors combating multiple generations of Aliens.

I thought they were going with a Newt during Hadley's type of scenario which would've been alright as an Isolation dlc.  I'd play it, the same way my dumbass bought Colonial Marines, but I have a feeling I'd be just as disappointed.

characters not directly from one of the movies or direct relatives of them (like Amanda). Weyland relatives I'd say are fine though since its kind of a "must".

It's a big universe, let some new people get terrorized/be the focus.

Yeah, it's silly they can't write fresh characters not related to existing ones. They got lucky Isolation was an ok game, but Amanda still didn't really bring anything significant to the table apart from having the Ripley name. The other characters she met or who were around her tended to be much more interesting.

Post by: Corporal Hicks on Feb 13, 2020, 10:28:26 AM
I've got to disagree with Amanda brought nothing to the game. I thought she worked so well as the emotional core of it. Finding that message was heart-wrenching.

Every time it comes up, I agree with the suggestion to move away from old characters. Zula proved you can make interesting new characters. Let's keep that up.

I'll always be disappointed about missing out on new games though.

We need more Alien games so I would have been fine with this bonkers idea.
Makes more sense than the alternate ending for The Predator with Newt.
Just hope that the Cold Iron one is not cancelled.

Sounds like the Cold Iron game is okay for now.

(And as opposed as I am to retcons and non-canon what-if stories, I completely would have bought a copy of this game.)

Wait, they actually *shot* that dumb Newt idea? I'm flabbergasted. Seriously? In what universe does that even begin to make sense to anybody? All I can think is that the makers of that movie must have actively set out to sabotage the franchise, I mean it's dead already, why not play around with the corpse...

I'm guessing the Alien game is going to be quietly cancelled / forgotten about now that Fox doesn't have much of a stake in it, and that Fox itself will be sold off because current Disney leadership doesn't understand the concept of alternative labels under umbrella companies. It'll happen, as stupid as it sounds, mark my words.

Just hoping that Hunting Grounds is a least passable as the final thing we get to play for the next decade outside of further inevitable mobile tie-ins.

Fuuuuuck. All the good stuff with potential always gets canned... Especially Singleplayer Storybased games >.< (Even though it's clear based on the market that people will still pay full price or way more for a great SP game. And yes I know this game wouldn't be "Canon" but something doesn't NEED to be canon to be good. Plenty of offshoots are fun as hell, which is what gaming is about, fun.).

The film got butchered in the editing bay. Neither of the endings had been intended but had been made anyways due to a mixture of cuts, test-screening reactions, and making something so weird it would immediately get cut for the lesser evil. An Iron-Predator is a lot less crazy than someone from the future being in the pod.

The Predator is text-book example of how Fox needed to f**k off on the series because for as bad as the initial script got, any and all attempts at fixing it just made the problem worse and cost them money.

It really sucks that the best story setup for an Aliens game imo was taken by that pile of shit ACM.  A new marine squad being sent to check what happened to the squad from the movie is an awesome setup and actually continues the Alien storyline post-Alien 3.  Unfortunately ACM botched it by having the rest of the actual story suck.  So they ruined that setup now and I dont think another game will want to use the same story setup.

Honestly I'm glad this one didn't see the light of day. I'd much rather have something like Isolation again, maybe with marines and more action based gameplay. Or something with more prequel elements, I'd love to see Neomorphs in a game for example.

Totally agreed, so far, attempting to retcon any aspect of Aliens or Alien³ creates only the most notable garbage in the franchise. Looking at Resurrection arguably, ACM, RoP arguably, SoS, F&S arguably, Stasis Interrupted, L&D arguably, The Predator's original ending(s), the sound of Cliff Bleszinski's project, the sound of Frederik Schreiber's project and Neill Blomkamp's alternate sequel idea. None good in my opinion, and we've got two decent Graphic Novel alternate sequels already, but neither superior to the film we got.

I don't remember Isolation retconning anything, in fact, it changes nothing notable, the fact Amanda Ripley did or did not encounter an Alien, changes nothing about Aliens SE or Alien³ SE, I think it's ultimately incorrect to state otherwise.
Title: Re: We Almost Got a Newt FPS
Post by: SiL on Mar 04, 2020, 08:34:20 PM
Oh baloney, Amanda Ripley going off on Alien hunting adventures is a retcon; others discovering the derelict and spreading Aliens around before Aliens is a retcon. Saying otherwise is just trying to have your cake and eat it.
Title: Re: We Almost Got a Newt FPS
Post by: The Old One on Mar 04, 2020, 08:40:37 PM
Yes but none of that occurs during Isolation, the Alien does not spread beyond Sevastopol Station, Amanda Ripley still passes away regardless far as we know. Blackout, Defiance, Resistance and Rescue change that yes- but Blackout's just alright, and half of Defiance's alright.
Title: Re: We Almost Got a Newt FPS
Post by: SiL on Mar 04, 2020, 08:47:15 PM
All of that happens during Isolation ??? Aliens spread to Sevastopol and you spend the game trying to defeat the Alien while looking for the flight recorder.

Title: Re: We Almost Got a Newt FPS
Post by: The Old One on Mar 04, 2020, 08:58:07 PM
Yes with Amanda Ripley found at the closure, Sevastopol's gone, Alien's gone and nothing's retroactively changed. Apart from perhaps the personal message portion of Ellen Ripley's last report. Also of course the Nostromo's recovered crew logs.

So things are changed.

The continuity is changed.

Retroactively.

Like a ... Retcon or something.

Only not, changed whatsoever.
Because nothing contradicts such ideas in Aliens or Alien³ anyway.
It's addition, not alteration.

It is fine if you feel as such.
But again, it's not alteration of anything in Aliens or Alien³ or indeed Alien.
It's addition, just as the idea of Ripley having a kid's one.

It's addition, just as the idea of Ripley having a kid's one.
Adding to a thing alters it. Ripley having a daughter is also a retcon - it's retroactively adding historical information to her character in Alien. Saying Ripley's daughter went on a great Alien killing scavenger hunt in space is retroactively adding information to Aliens and the series.

Attempting to retcon the movies does result in a lot of garbage - but also some great stuff. Just like adding new things often results in garbage, or great stuff. It's almost like the retcon aspect isn't the fundamental issue.

Unless you go strictly films, at this point with the Alien EU you have to.

Take Predator. It was confirmed on screen and by cast members in The Predator that all six films were canon: 4 Predators, 2 AVPs, all canon. Clean and neat.

But on the Alien side, Prometheus retcons out AvP and the Predator creature, only to rope AvP and the Predator creature back into Alien EU canon per the Weyland-Yutani Report via Fire and Stone and subsequent stories. Of course, adding anything Predator related in Alien EU is canon to the first 1987 Predator film, which is subsequently canon to the AvP films, ultimately snapping the AvP films back into the Alien EU canon.

So as you can see...

Perhaps I just used the incorrect terminology, I'm fine with certain types of retroactive additions, such as Amanda Ripley encountering the Alien, I'm not so fine with certain other notable types of retroactive additions, such as Ellen Ripley encountering the hive in Alien while saying she doesn't recognise it later on one's contradictory and the other's non-contradictory.

As for continuity and canon overall, I simply believe with respect to the individual franchises themselves, what's "canon" to Alien only affects it, what's "canon" to Predator only affects it, yet if under AVP's canon and continuity something comes into conflict with information from one stating one thing and one stating another, I personally believe the newest information takes precedence, as such a rule set's proved reliable before.
