Title: Dark Horse Releasing 'Aliens The Original Comic Series Vol 2'
Post by: Russ840 on Oct 06, 2016, 10:59:33 AM
Looks like we are getting the the fancy pants edition of Aliens Book 2 and Earth war all in one volume.

http://www.bleedingcool.com/2016/10/05/dark-horse-announces-aliens-dead-orbit-plus-second-original-series-hardcover/

Hopefully this will include Countdown as well.

Quite a clever way of releasing both the remaing vols in one go. Not many people would likely pick up a stand alone volume for earth war.

Releasing April next year.

Don't particularly want Female War but I would love to see Countdown included! Regardless though, I was hoping Book 2 would see a fancy pants release and I'm glad it's coming!

I used to hate Earth war/Female War but I read it again recently and have a new found appreciation for it. No idea why though lol .

I would like a fancy pants of labyrinth as well now. Be nice to get some interviews from the creators on that one.

I still can't get into Female War. I found the novel a better experience but they were both still messy.

They did. But they never went anywhere with it. Now why or how. The novelization also completely omitted the Space Jockey angle.

That was te first novel I Aliens I read. Wills also develops a crush on Billie as well I think.

I think I will give the upcoming reprint of the Berserker novel a go based on your comments in the other thread.

Man, Same Keith's oversized art is going to be hard work to get through. Den's on the other hand, is going to be amazing.

Yeah, I really hated that. Such a completely out of the blue and inappropriate direction to take. Really wish Steve Perry hadn't started that off in the Nightmare Asylum adaptation.  :-\

You should! Very very good novel!

However, Den Beauvais' oversized art is going to be an absolute treat! Really can't wait to get my hands on this one!  ;D

Now I'm curious if they include that extra panel in Book 2 that Denis did in '96.

I spoke about it here in this thread http://www.avpgalaxy.net/forum/index.php?topic=55248.0

Hopefully it includes some more never-before seen artwork from Denis.

I'm sure that panel will be included, but i've never read the comic without that panel so it would really feel wrong if it wasnt there.

It's a one-off that ties up the whole Space Jockey plot from the 1st and 3rd series.

Didn't they apparently lose the original artwork masters for that, which is why it's never been collected after the Aliens magazine mini comic?

That's sucks if that's the case. It's not the end of te world though. Marvel's Masterworks department regularly has to take high res scans of old issue from the existing issues and then remaster them to bring them to scratch.

This is not necessarily related to thehardcover release, but DH authorized a recent re-release of just Volume II issue #4 (with an exclusive cover through Celebrity Authentics). I was wondering why they went with only Vol. II #4 (the re-release was to take advantage of autographs at the Aliens 30th anniversary cast reunions) when I realized it is definitely for the final panel featuring the reappearance of Ripley. This is a neat feature item, and something that obviously had more thought put into it than the average re-print. I applaud them for not picking an Earth War issue just because those contain more of Ripley. Denis Beauvais' single panel on the final page seems more deserving of this cover than an issue of the subsequent series.

Interesting especially as Ripley appears on one panel for the entire issue. Nice one though but as nice as that cover is it's hardly relevant given the story ... I'll stick with Denis' original cover personally.

http://www.cbr.com/dark-horse-comics-february-2017-solicitations/

Dark Horse Solicits for February have Vol 2 of the original comics series hardcover listed.

The book is 224 pages. Vol 1 was 184 and that included the six issues of the original series and the the short story called Lucky, so effectively 7 issues of comics plus other extras.   It also never listed Lucky in the solicit for Vol one.

There is still hope that Countdown could be be included in the new Vol with the 40 page higher page count.

Well done guys.

My favourite artist from any Alien/Dark Horse comic!!!!

Can you ask Denis how he got the gig in the first place? Keen to know given his style was so different to that of Mark Nelson's in the first book.

Seen as in Vol 1, 'Lucky' was listed in the contents page, it would be safe to assume that they would be listed in this volume, if included.

Agreed. More so for Countdown.

At least with 'The Alien', they could include that in a hypothetical Vol 3, collecting Genocide and Harvest/Hive. It could be a good prologue.

Should have been in Vol 2 though, to cap the story off.

It would explain why the Engineer orbiting Earth vanished though.

I think that it would work either at the end of Vol 2 and the beginning of Vol 3. Without it in one of the vol's though, there would be a terrible gap in the story.

It didn't vanish.  Newt talks about it on the second last page and effectively ties things up.  It's still in orbit and can be dealt with in a later story.  Just not this particular volume which ends with worldwide detonations seen from orbit.  The Alien says only a few old fission bombs were detonated, thus undermining the conclusion of Earth War.

Got it on the weekend. It's big and beautiful. It only contains Nightmare Asylum & Earth War - no extras but some nice covers collected at the end.

Interesting to note that elsewhere in this forum (http://www.avpgalaxy.net/forum/index.php?topic=55248.0) I found the Omnibus edition included an extra panel in Aliens Nightmare Asylum by Denis B - the one full page image of Spears admiring a Xeno in one of those Stasis tubes - however in this collected Hardcover edition doesn't include it - in fact there is an odd blank page around where that panel was previously printed.

That's really disappointing.

I'm a little taken back by the lack of completion here.

I suppose this is reprinting the original books and that extra page is from the re released edited versions of the book. Perhaps they are releasing exactly as originally intended.

So no directors cut here

Don't let it put you off. It's worth it alone getting it for the Nightmare Asylum large reprinting. It's damn beautiful - the hardcover is one of the very best I've seen.

It's a shame Denis' extra panel didn't make it - it's utterly beautiful.

That panel sums up the one thing that ruins the comic for me - Spears is such an over-the-top, cartoonish caricature of a villain.

Any chance of some more pics mate?  Some showing the different side of the book and what not.

Lol he is like a classic, mustache twirling comic book villian. I actually quite enjoyed him.

While it has some of the best art ever,  the story always felt rather mundane and run of the mill. I enjoyed it enough but Spears is insane on a lvl that would make it impossible for anyone to actually follow him as a leader.

I am pretty blown away that they didnt include that panel though, such a shame. I havent been able to pick my copy up yet unfortunatly.

Yeah, that's what I hated.

It's one thing being a genocidal dick to civilian colonists, but once you start doing that repeatedly to your own soldiers, you're going to get a knife in your back real fast.

Which is exactly what happened.

They were ready to mutiny before Hicks, Newt and Butler arrived.

The way it read to me, plenty of them were scared but they still needed Hicks to actually show up and convince them to get off their arses and do something about it. The way Spears was portrayed, I found it dumb Hicks even needed to push.

Plus, even then Spears still had plenty of guys backing him up, despite the fact they were apparently no more safe from his psychosis than anyone else. I didn't buy that there would be that many nutjobs willing to bet their lives against his sociopathic tendencies.

Just after Hicks, Newt and Butler land, they're locked up as Powell is writing a personal log.

"The general has his loyalists, but it's only a matter of time before there's open rebellion."

Hicks just brought it on quicker (ie. within hours of landing) - while Spears was dealing with three deserters.

To be fair, I'm more familiar with the novel than the comic, and in the novel Hicks really does have to convince Powell to do something.

I would say that the comic has the atmosphere boosted by the awesome artwork. It looks and feels as though it fits in the movie universe. It flows well because it's quite compressed and in the comic format, the villian, Spears, works ok I'd say despite his cliché personality.

The comic looks like it's straight from the second films in terms of the hardware, infrastructure, Aliens etc.

Agreed. The visual style of Book 2 is much better. It doesn't look like generic equipment. It's one of the things I really appreciated about the style.

Thas one of the things i was not so fond of from book one. The world didnt look like the world from Alien and Aliens. Book 2 nailed that.

Hicks, did you pick up a copy yet ?

Finally picked my copy up. The hardcover is gorgeous and the qaulity is good. However im pretty disappointed overall. I knew countdown was not included but the lack of the 96' panel is a bummer and they have only included the cover art and nothing extra. Its very bare bones and its really unfortunate.

Got my copy today.  Like Buddy has said, beautiful book. So nicely put together.  Sewn binding that lays flat and it lines up perfectly next to Vol 1.

What I must say is, again, like Buddy, I am hugely disappointed at the lack of 'DVD' extras here. At minimum, if they did not want to include the extra page during the story because they are reprinting the series how it was originally intended, the extra page should have been included as a 'deleted scene,' if you like, in the extras area.  A bit of a write up as to why it was added in later printings would have been interesting as well.

I'm gutted that Countdown was not included and I think it's a shame that there is no 'afterword' by either of the artists.

One thing I am very happy about, just for my OCD really, is that the is no Vol No. on the spine. This is good for me because if there are any further releases, I can be selective with what I get and not have missing Vol No.'s on my shelf.

Yup, Ive only seen Alex Ross' Terminator Burning Earth as far as comic books which are so visually consistent with the movie. Great stuff, even got the cinematography down, and it even shows best in the cover, which is, imo the best Alien image possible, lighting , coloring and all.
