The whole planet part was really well done.

More the hive fight not really killing Jesse herself.

And the pred alien fight wasn't bad either. Marines would have helped the film in space but that was down to the writer I guess..

Have to admit, I liked this part too.

BigDaddyJohn

Yeah, i liked the pred planet and Wolf.

AliceApocalypse

Right, I had such hope after watching that scene.  Then it's time to just turn off the movie after he blasts off.

I get the sense with that Predator planet scene, is the movie the Strause Bros really wanted to make.

I think if they had the freedom and the budget, they would have given us something cool, but the biggest enemy of these movies is studio politics.

At least now the franchise is getting some of the Disney cash  ;D

The planet scene was great. Wolfs investigation of the crashed ship was fun to watch also.  There are three mini moments that really stand out to me as well.

1. After jesse's death, when the Predalien speared ricky with its tail. Right after dallas opens fire on it, there's a half second during the shot change when you see down the dimly lit hallway past the injured ricky, and the Predaliens tail flies through a door and out of sight as it escapes into the depths of the hospital. That's my favorite shot of the whole movie. Perfectly executed alien moment. It's just scary as hell.

2. When wolf is seen by the deputy, and his eyes shine in those dark woods. Terrifying. I think that's as close a moment to the original film as we've gotten since.

3. When wolf adds the extra gun inside the ship, and they both retract behind him. Because it was just so cool.

Honorable mention for the "bootyshot"  ;)

The opening with the Father and Son going hunting and stumbling across facehuggers is pretty cool.  Facehuggers don't get used enough, so it's good we got to see some more facehugger action.  I don't even mind seeing a kid get hugged, because that's what they do.

Unfortunately after that scene and then the Predator planet scene and we cut to the town, the movie goes downhill fast, but I won't get into negatives since this is a positivity thread.  If they set the entire film just in the forest I think it would have been better.

It's clear the Strause Bros were trying to make a movie that was a combination of Aliens and Predator (what many fans would want for their ideal AVP movie).

-The scenes in the woods are clearly inspired from Predator
-The power plant is a stand in for the Atmosphere Processor
-The town may as well be a colony
-The military vehicle standing in for the APC
-Instead of the marines we have the National Guard
-Dallas/Kelly/Molly = Hicks/Ripley/Newt

I still don't think it is that bad of a movie. Aside from the obvious pizza porno part and the horribly dark transfer.

yautjapet

Agreed, my favorite moments of all the movies are when we get to see longer glimpses of the preds when they're not actively hunting.

whiterabbit

I like how Kelly grabbed Molly and ran for it as if their lives were on the line. None of that crying or screaming bullshit.

That was yet another missed opportunity.  Mother 'abandons' daughter and husband in favour of her career.  Then abandons her husband again to the Alien.

whiterabbit

How was she going to save him? Also she didn't abandon her family in favor of her career. Some jobs just have different requirements. Which is why it's call a sacrifice for the greater good. Hell abandon is for when you never come back or ditch someone for the newer model and refuse to make support payments.

Hence the quote marks around 'adandons'.

But tell that to a little girls whose perspective is 'Mum would rather be away from me than with me'.

It would've added a modicum of depth to the characters if they explored Molly's feelings about her absent mother and Kelly's feelings of guilt, and how they reconcile over the course of the story.

whiterabbit

Alright I see your point but that would have added another 20 minutes to a monster-smash movie. But yea cut out the pizza teen porn part and put that in and it would have been a better movie. A missed opportunity yes but at the same time I doubt people would have been any more happy with the final product.
