I expected this to have like a 20-30% on RT, but a lot of critics love it, some say it's one of the greatest action movies this year, some even say it's one of Keanu's best performances ever. This movie has my attention, I will watch it.
If it is what it is - a sorta Gran Torino with the tone of Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, it could be quite enjoyable to watch.

Okay, believe the hype. This may be the best action movie of the year. Reeves kills it in the role as the unstoppable hitman that makes bad guys shit their pants. The plot is painfully simple. The son of a Russian mobster kills Wick's dog and steals his car. That's it. That's all there is to it. And from there we sit back and watch Wick tear his way through the Russian mob. The gun play and fight scenes are wonderfully choreographed and brutal. My favorite scene in particular was when Wick tears his way through a nightclub.
And holy shit that was Daniel Bernhardt. Expect to see a Neo vs. Agent Johnson rematch on more than one occasion in this.

John Wick (2014)
Holy shit! excuse my French but...holy shit!! what has happened to Keanu Reeves?! Ever since 'The Matrix' he's kinda turned into this cult action man starring in a few kickass action movies. First it was 'Man of Tai Chi' then '47 Ronin' and now this! I think Reeves has one of the most topsy turvy filmographies around, up and down and from one end of the genre spectrum to the other. To top it all despite Reeves doing all this gung-ho stuff he never actually looks fit, he always looks like...well, a couch potatoe.
So what's going on here, well its pretty simple really. Reeves plays John Wick, a retired assassin who was quite literately the best of the best, a one man army who took down entire syndicates of bad guys. One day some dumb Russian mobsters follow him home, break in, beat him up and wreck his place, all to steal his hotrod Mustang...oh and they kill his adorable new puppy too. Thing is Wick's wife had recently passed away leaving him the puppy, so this little dog meant a lot to Wick...A LOT! Plus the little thing is so damn cute and nobody likes to see doggies get hurt or abused. So what happens next you ask...well Wick goes off the deep end and methodically takes out every one of the Russian mobsters as he searches for the one who killed his dog. He basically goes to war against the mob.
OK so when I first heard of this I had no idea what this movie was about with its obscure title, it could of been some Dickensian tale for all I knew. Of course now we all know...its a videogame, OK that's being a bit harsh but lets be honest here this is a very simplistic story of revenge that caters for one thing. That's totally fine of course, the reason being because the movie knows this, everyone involved knew what they were making and knew who the target audience would be. The movie is a balls to the wall shoot em up with lots of hard core fisticuffs and plenty of brain splattering which makes no excuses. I might add that almost all the blood splattering appeared to be CGI I'm afraid, they still can't break that habit.
There is nothing new to see here as I'm sure most will have already guessed. Reeves looks super slick in designer made to measure suits, he drives super slick muscle cars, the bad guys drive black BMW's, every character appears to be very very rich, there is a token sexy female assassin, a token old mentor assassin, loads of faceless henchmen and lots of highly super slick fight choreography with shit loads of gun porn. Been there, seen it, done it, vomited on the t-shirt. But of course we all knew this, that's what you paid for when you saw the movie, hence I can't really knock it for that.
Apart from the usual shenanigans there were one or two things that stood out. The hotel Continental was a nice touch, a hotel that caters specifically for assassins (wealthy ones) and has a special code of honour. You are not allowed to carry out any business on the premises, if you do then you get executed apparently. I liked the quiet calm demeanor of the place, the unassuming yet lavish appearance and the well spoken (and again very calm and quiet) hotel receptionist. Although when they give Wick a free super slick, super black brand new Mustang just like that, it felt a bit too...superhero-ish. I liked how the whole movie had this graphic novel vibe to it, it felt much more solid and well put together than your average silly action thriller and the fact that Wick is vulnerable and gets injured.
On the flip side the unoriginal, stereotypcial, cliched moments really made me groan despite the fact you know to expect that. As said Wick does get injured but it never really stops him, he gets some nasty cuts and bruises yet carries on because he's basically a super dude. Some of the locations for the action sequences were so unbelieveably cliche and the main reason why it made me think I was watching a videogame adaptation. The obligatory neon lit uber wealthy nightclub shootout scenario with lots of half naked ultra hot women meandering around (thank you 'Blade').
Then of course you have the obligatory capture and torture of Wick, the main boss has the opportunity to kill Wick right there but instead decides to talk and walk off leaving it to his henchmen (thank you Bond). I already mentioned the token sexy female assassin in tight clothes, throw in some car chases in expensive cars, the fact its all at night...oh and the fact that despite the main boss character explaining how lethal and invincible Wick is...he continuously antagonises him! even after Wick lets him off.
Its all about the fast paced kinetic action obviously, the movie aims to throw that in your face and it does so perfectly. Is it any good other than that? well no not really, like I said its cliched to the hilt and very formulaic, its been done before. The film is engaging for sure, you wanna see that Russian asshole nailed for killing that cute lill puppy...but I wouldn't say its a good film. It does what it does well, it does what you (the target audience) want. Its a throwaway popcorn flick that is merely much more glossy than most.
On a final note I have heard about a franchise springing up from this. I will go on record now saying I believe that to be a bad idea, this is clearly a one shot deal flick, lightning in a bottle, a one off rollercoaster. Making more of these will most probably result in failure because the idea doesn't require it, its a simple silly flick that doesn't need a franchise. How can you expand on this anyway? have Wick killing yet more hordes of bad guys somewhere else because they stole his newspaper? The initial surprise and awe has been used on this first movie, you won't get that again, recent example easily being 'Taken'.
6.5/10

We don't, but the fact that same team is coming back for this and they even said they had other stories to tell is a positive sign. Of course this could be a s**t bomb, but no reason to think negative about a film that was barely announced.
In an interview, the writer said he talked with Keanu early on about making it a series. Keanu asked "how many movies do you see this becoming" and the writer said 7. He started pitching a few, and Keanu stopped him and said something along the lines of "let's focus on the next one first."

I agree. I still think this will become the next Taken franchise.
The whole thing where everyone (including the cop) knows who John Wick is except the one guy who f**ked with him most was a really amusing part of the first one and will probably be absent in the sequel so in my eyes it already won't be as good.

It can't be as good really, because the first was a hit outta nowhere, no one really expected it or knew what the movie offered. A sequel won't have that bonus, we all know exactly what's gonna happen, plus what on earth will the plot be this time without being a rehash.
Same creative crew, apparently they had plans for it before they even shot the first (both unlike Taken 2), so I'm optimistic.

Unless it's some visual epic or an all-time favourite of mine, I don't normally bother with Blu-rays. I don't care enough when the DVD is half the price (not to mention the PlayStation does a superb job of uprating DVDs so they look pretty fantastic anyway).
That sounds reasonable enough. I myself have a hard time going back to watch any of my old DVD's thanks to Blu-ray.

Was actually quite surprised that there hadn't been a John Wick 2 thread made here!!
Thought I would make one because in my opinion the film was so damn entertaining and one of the few sequels that actually outdoes it's predecessor in nearly everyway possible that it deserves it's own thread.
So aside from the original film itself what did everyone here think of John Wick: Chapter 2? Do you believe it outdoes the original in style, visual aestethcis, action and entertainment?
I honestly loved the hell out of Chapter 2 when I first saw it, especially the taxi scene in the beginning and the catacombs shoot-out ;-) have been a fan ever since. Just the action, the way John has to handle the death and loss of his wife along with that CUTTTTEEE little beagle. You feel for John, there's depth and chemistry in the story and the action is utterly crazy and fun as hell! I can't remember the last time i've had this much fun with an action film.
The first one was one of the most solid action flicks I've seen in years so I braced myself for disappointment with the second one, because it is rare for a follow up to be on par with the original. Especially one as solid as John Wick. And I was...stunned at how epic it was. They didn't over complicate it, they didn't make it desperately bigger than the first one. It was so solid.
The stories for these movies have a timeless quality to them - almost like a samurai movie. First one is about righteous vengeance and rage. Second is repaying a debt and betrayal. Third will (presumably) be with John being like a Ronin trying to survive being an outcast for violating a code. Whatever it is, I'll be there opening day.
This is basically the John Wick universal thread:

Because you can actually recreate real gunshot wounds?? Maybe suspending your disbelief a little and not criticizing the WHOLE entire film off CGI blood would help you enjoy it. If that kind of stuff ruins a movie for you, you might as well stop watching movies all together imho.

CGI gunshot wounds never look real. Oldschool squibs are far superior. They only use CGI because it's cheaper, but I've never seen it not look fake.
I wouldn't trash a film solely because of it, but I get markweatherill's point. It looks shit and cheap and it really annoys me.
Still one of the best films of the year.
Squibs always looked over the top to me.

haha, I actually haven't seen that yet and have been meaning to get around to it. It actually looks like it's worth watch but YES watch John Wick: Chapter 2. I thought it was FARRRRRRRRRRRR superior to the first. I mean I like the first one but the action in John Wick 2 is off the f**king chain! :o :o
Finally saw John Wick 2... It was good ! I liked it better than the first, especially this "world of assassins", it's very well depicted in the movie. It almost have a "matrix" vibe, with all the surveillance, communications going on behind the curtains, a world within the world, it was really cool !

Hell yes. 8)
I like the first except the absence of boss fights.
I think the second is almost too much, but I dug the Common/Keanu fight, and the mirror shootout sequence. I own both of them, so I guess I still like them both pretty well.
I hope this is the final one. It would be a shame if they begin to push these out every two years until they inevitably become mediocre.
Thoroughly enjoyed the first two. I know they're silly but I enjoy them all for it. Will eagerly await a 3rd.
Never got around to watching the sequel, but it's at the very top of my "to-track-down" list.

Eh, I'd rather just have Chapter 3.
I enjoyed both films but I'm not sure there's enough in there for a TV show.
This is more about The Continental not John Wick.
Yeah, ace is right. Supposedly the show is going to be based around the hitman hotels in the films, with Keanu only making occasional appearances as Wick. As far as I'm aware, there's a third film in production alongside the show.
And they're developing The Ballerina as a spinoff film.

First trailer on Thursday.
My body is ready!
If this movie is anywhere near as good as the first two this joins the conversation as one of the best action trilogies of all time.
I was just thinking yesterday how I need to rewatch these. This is as good an excuse as any.
So stoked they're bringing Ares back. :)
Well Keanu will need the boost after Replicas.
That bad, huh?
Well, I didn't see the movie, but I was asked to read and review the script. Painful is the word.
Spoiler
It ends with John being shot by Ian McShane. In a mid credits scene, John wakes up in a chair outside a NY café. Fishburne's character sits across from him. After a quiet moment,
Fishburne: How do you feel?
John: Different
Fishburne: ...Good.
A ringing telephone interrupts their conversation. As John turns his head towards the telephone booth, Fishburne stares at him and smiles.
Morpheus: It's been a long time, my friend.
Slow zoom-in on the ringing phone, and cut to black.
Fishburne was inches away from calling John Wick The One in the last movie, so that wouldn't surprise me.
It wouldn't be the worst lead-in, if they'd go that route. But it's not likely.
Either way, they should hurry, Reeve's is starting to develop a bad case of the "old man nasal spread".
My body is ready for that Wick on a Horse action.

I didn't like her character that much in the second movie if I'm being honest. I was pretty upset that Common didn't come back, I felt like their characters had unfinished business.

Didn't she die in the second? I may be mistaken though.
It was implied she died, yes. But they left it open enough for her to return, and a lot of sources claimed she was in this one until very recently.

I'd only seen the second one the once before as well; watched it again last night.
I think I might actually prefer it. While it lacked the refreshing simplicity the first one had going for it plot-wise, everything else about it - the world-building, and most importantly the action sequences - feels far more grand and impressive.
I am sad to hear Cassian won't be back though, because that was definitely set up in

Keanu is awesome. I'm a huge Matrix fan from back in the day, so John Wick means a lot to me.
I'm not really an guns blazing action movie fan. I like the Mission Impossible films but stuff like the Bourne films are fun they just don't click with me. That being said I absolutely LOVE this series. The action is so way done and its not just people hiding behind things shooting at each other it flows from gun play to physical combat so effortlessly. Also I saw the first one a week or so after my dog passed away so maybe thats why I connect with it so much.

Naw man, the most unholy thing that effects these movies is making the gunshots sound like they're using a stapler, even without using a "Hollywood suppressor". Every movie does this now. He fires off guns indoors without ear protection and can still talk to people afterwards?
Or like when that one female assassin kills that guy with his own revolver in the first one. Point blank in a small room with no ear protection. 98% of what I shoot is magnum caliber revolvers. Even in wide open pastures outdoors, you fire off one shot from a .357 without ear protection and youre gonna be hearing ringing and squat for 15 minutes straight or more, and your neighbors a half mile away are going to hear it with the windows closed.
Open range had a few scenes where some of the guns sounded realistic, but the whole put-put sounds they give guns nowadays gets my gander up. And don't get me started on "run all night".

They're alright. I think they're a bit overrated. I'm glad Keanu found something solid though.
The first Wick is great. The second one is just okay. They took the story in all the wrong directions and made Wick into some kind of superhuman killer. It probably has to do with the fact that the first one had two directors, while the second one had the less talented one (Stahelski). The other guy (Leitch) went on and made Atomic Blonde and Deadpool 2.
I disagree. 2 is way better than 1. And Stahelski is way better than Leitch. Deadpool 2 was so mediocre
I really like both movies, but the simplicity of the story in first gives it the edge for me. There was something really refreshing about how bare-bones it's plot was, yet it still managed to have some heart to it. The second introduced far more of a story, and while I wouldn't go as far as to say that hurt the film, I definitely missed the stripped-down feel of the first one. It also lacked the simple but effective emotional connect the original had.
The second movie was always going to struggle with giving us a good reason for Wick to get back into action after essentially doing what he needed to do in the first film. I think they did the best they could but they left the second movie in a great place for the third movies story.
I like the world building they've done for the series so far and I'm still interested in the TV show they're planning.
I didn't like the lack of boss fights the 1st had. It was just keanu whipping on a bunch of toolbags.

Yeah, good point. But you see how Winston isn't really surprised when they don't find Wick in the alley.
Yeah, I noticed that. With Chron (hotel manager) telling Winston, "well played", he's thinking like us, that it was done to ultimately protect John. I have a feeling that Winston really betrayed him, though.
In JW2, it was the fake CGI blood that pulled me right out of the movie.
The director dialled that right back for Chapter 3, thankfully.
This time, I found myself thinking

I own the first two, but when it comes to the third I'm going to wait for it to hit the $5 bargain bin.
September is gonna be an expensive month for home releases!
Just finished John Wick 3. My god, I don't remember when last time I've seen such a boring movie. Had to keep skipping because action scenes made me sleepy. It's all the same over and over again. Nothing changes, there is no suspense, no excitement. It's like reading the same book again or watching soup opera (I don't). Jesus! It was the last John Wick movie I've ever seen. f**k me, no more. I give up. I've seen all three (I still don't know how I managed) and this genre is definitely not my cup of tea. I totally don't get why this series is so popular. The only thing I like about it is John's dark suits. They're mint.
Ha, I enjoyed it a lot. I wonder where they'll go next, this one was already nuts.

I liked some things about the second movie, but I don't see where the character and universe warranted more than 1 film. It was a very specific thing that motivated him in the first film, and anything else beyond that just seems forced.
While I enjoyed the second film well enough, I kinda agree. One of the things that made the first one so great was its refreshing simplicity. The straightforward revenge plot gave it tremendous drive and focus. The sequel was a lot heavier on plot and, I thought, less engaging as a result. (Still no seen number three.)
I think the sequels contextualize why he retired in the first place; merely placing a foot back into that world opens pandora's box.

Well Chapter 3 was pretty boring.
John Wick has a problem.
John Wick shoots it in the face.
This creates another problem.
John Wick shoots that one in the face, too.
Etc.
I enjoyed the first one, but it didn't need to keep going.

100% Agreed.
And many eyerolls towards John being picked up and thrown into glass, only to be picked up and thrown into glass, only to be picked up and thrown into glass, only to be picked up and thrown into glass, only to be picked up and thrown into glass.
Bonus eyerolls to his enemies having a chance to kill John Wick, but not doing so because it's an honor, and not doing so again because it's an honor, and not doing so because it's an honor, and not doing so again because it's an honor, and not doing so again because it's an honor.
Recently bought this on VUDU. Not sure if I hated it as much as some here have expressed, but I wish I had rented it instead. I didn't learn my lesson from buying John Wick 2.

I want Scott Adkins in JW4 or JW5.
I was rewatching the first one, and I was thinking that Dafoe would have survived if they knew they were getting sequels. And it's weird how casually Perkins is willing to break Continental rules considering the epic shit storm that ensues when John breaks them in 2.
Lol yeah that second point's always bugged me.
But Perkins was executed. It's not as if they gave her a slap on the wrist for it.
She didn't seem that bothered by the potential consequences when she did the job though. She didn't even make herself scarce afterwards, agreeing to that fatal meet with Ian McShane.
Yeah, it's weird. It's like she had a death wish.

Perkins didn't care about the rules and 4 million was enough for her to break them at The Continental. When she said f**k management that right there shows how bold and careless she was and that's why she was dealt with immediately. I think when Wick broke them, Winston declared him Excommunicado because of the circumstances, being that D'Antonio betrayed Wick. Wick still wasn't a free man, after that hour that Winston gave him, he was fair game for the 14 million dollar bounty set by the High Table.
Rewatching the movies, I noticed something about the ending of Chapter 2...
Spoiler
Winston hands a John a marker in the park. It can't be Sofia's, John gets that from the book in Chapter 3. So who's is it?
I thought Winston gave him the Marker so Wick can reach out to him even after his Excommunicado. Afterall, markers must be honored.

I like Chapter 2 the most; it has such a satisfying ending.
Neither sequel comes close to the cathartic simplicity of the first one imo. Heaping on a load more plot took away the straightforward drive, and ultimately the action scenes, stylish as they are, are just more of the same over and over.
Case in point - my main gripe with the second movie is that the opening action sequence is by far the best it gets, probably because it's the only one that feels like I hadn't already seen it in the first movie.
Actually, that's a really good point and I agree. But I still like the action in 2. Especially the execution of D'Antonio.
There's one part in the first film that I find myself skipping over every time it comes on...I think we all know which one I'm talking about. :'(

I want to see the "impossible mission" that Viggo sent John on before he could finally retire.
Just came back from an early screening for John Wick Chapter 4. Here is my non-spoiler review. In a word, if you enjoyed the previous John Wick movies, you will like this very much. I don't know how director Chad Stahelski did it, but somehow he managed to top his previous entries in the series to create even more inventive, violent, over-the-top yet throughly enjoyable action scenes. There is just this energy to the fight scenes that makes you glue to the screen.
The movie is almost a non-stop reel of Keanu Reeves shooting, punching, kicking and stabbing his way through countless disposable baddies. In a way, that structure resembles a video game in how the player has to fight through a series of villains and heavies to get to the ultimate boss. Normally comparing a movie to a video game isn't a good sign, but in this case, I am saying it as a praise.
I also like the new characters like "Caine" played by Donnie Yen. His fans may know him from his Ip Man role and his Hong Kong action films, but he hasn't really had a lot of decent Hollywood roles to allow his martial arts talent to display on screen to international audiences. Here in John Wick 4 though, Yen really delivers his powerful fighting skills we only saw a glimpse of in Rogue One. Another character is "Tracker/Mr. Nobody", played by Shamier Anderson, I like how his character developed in the movie, but I won't go into detail so as not to spoil it for you.
As for Keanu Reeves, well, he delivers his trademark Keanu style acting, saying "Yeah" a lot. His critics tend to dismiss his acting ability and I suppose this film won't win any of his critics over. But there is no question even when he is approaching 60, he is still a top action star that can do his own stunts and do it convincingly. The way he rampages on screen as Wick in this latest movie is very impressive.
So all-in-all, if you like action and martial arts movies, go see John Wick 4.
John Wick Chapter 4 has set a new franchise record with US $73.5 million in the US opening weekend and 64 million internationally, combining for a total of US $137.5 million opening weekend. Not bad at all. And remember, the first John Wick opened to "only" 14 million back in 2014:
https://variety.com/2023/film/news/john-wick-4-box-office-sets-franchise-record-opening-weekend-1235564839/
I am just glad a well made movie that has enjoyed great critical and fan reviews has done fantastically at the box office. That's not always the case with Hollywood...cough...Transformers sequels...cough.
Just came back from this, felt a bit overlong in a few places (some Paris scenes) but was very enjoyable.
Was hoping for a bit more Lance Reddick as well.

Chapter 5. There's maybe the barest hint that John isn't actually dead, when the dog turns and looks at something at the grave. But I know from owning dogs that they're easily distracted and that doesn't really mean anything.
If I have one problem with the series overall, it's that they keep introducing cool supporting characters who survive the movie, and then drop them completely in the next one with no hints or explanation. Like, Common and Ruby Rose at the very least probably should have turned up again.
