Nice review. He only gave sound a 6.5 but I'm not a big audiophile anyway. The 8.5 for the picture quality is what I zeroed on.

Plus he was one of the reviewers that dogged Predator's 4k video quality and subsequently got beat up in the comments for it, so my perception seems to align with his.

Starburst's review.

QuoteSure, you may have various other releases of this absolute juggernaut of cinema, but Alien really has never looked better or more terrifying. Whether you pick this up or not will depend on whether you deem the new UHD transfer of this classic as important. If you're a 4K junkie, though, this one is most certainly a must-have.

I've been reading through the Blu-ray thread and even though I prefer the TE, I am disappointed to hear the DC hasn't received the same love.

So this video is being discussed over there too. Apparently it's completely none representative of the 4K edition and the colours are incorrect. You can see that when comparing to the screen caps from the compare website.

I previously watched DVD versions (one or two times), but after blu-ray don't remember them. So, please tell me - Blue filter in 4K edition is natural color of Alien film or just a filter? It looks strange and unusual.

SiL

That video isn't a good comparison; the comments point out that the colour space is changed from the actual 4K to what's shown, resulting in weird colours.

It indeed looks off, but we can't fully be certain of the color deviations yet by any comparison on YouTube. We all need to see it in person. However, the word is there are some variances in color. It will also be interesting how HDR impacts the color. We'll see.  :)

In a somewhat related note, I've recently watched both Terminator 2 and Predator 2 both in 4K and neither match their theatrical representations anymore. But while the Predator 2 color deviation is slight, more nuanced, T2 is just in-your-face different.

SiL

T2 had heavy work done on it. Alien is supposed to be scanned straight from the original negative. The colour difference should be going from post-colour graded full HD scan to uncolour graded 4K film negative scan.

Why? Did Scott supervise the Blu-Ray?

Blade Runner comes to mind. Sir Ridley personally supervised, changed and approved the color timing to his liking. Now this was billed as a different cut, so different circumstances, but Gladiator, Alien, either with subtlety or extensive director's cuts, there is still Scott's apparent desire to improve his classics versus having a let-live-as-is attitude like other directors share.

James Cameron seems to have this desire to improve too. Here's an occasion where Cameron wasn't even truthful about digital alterations he made. https://skynetsarmy.net/2017/05/05/james-cameron-wasnt-completely-forthcoming-about-altering-the-digital-effects-in-terminator-2-judgment-day-3d/

That's why Ridley being involved will always make me nervous, even if no changes ultimately come from it.

Blade Runner's 4K transfer is visually magnificent though. A exemplar of the format.

Judgment Day is a trashfire, no comparison.

Especially after a handful of reviews I've seen, I have little concern over Alien 4k not looking wonderful.

This discussion is just through the prism of will the colors look like its theatrical release.  :)
