Title: What was the first Alien/Predator physical media you owned?
Post by: Acid for Blood on Jan 28, 2024, 07:52:05 PM
I'm wondering what everyone's first piece of Alien/Predator film physical media is that they owned. This might be anything from laserdisc to 4k or maybe just a novelisation.

Do you have any nice memories of getting it and do you still own it?

Cool. I've still got the 4-pack VHS from that year ...  :'( I couldn't afford the Alien Legacy DVD set. Eventually in the early 2000's I bought my first DVD player - and my first DVD was the Predator 2-pack set. Then I got the Alien Quadrilogy DVD for Christmas 2003. Happy times.

*casts mind back to '93/94*

Well the movies were tv recording at first for me, but for official media, it was;

***the following are images from google***

First VHS; Alien 3 (as Alien and Aliens were already deleted, and I had to track those down pre-owned; I was lucky the one store still had an Alien 3 in stock I could order in). (https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/iVIAAOSwFRxiyCo8/s-l1600.jpg)

First Graphic Novel; Aliens: Tribes TPB
(https://storage.googleapis.com/hipcomic/p/5581ac17f1b8cf08819ba8f504507172.jpg)

First Comic Books; Aliens: Colonial Marines #1 and Aliens: Earth Angel (picked up at same time) (https://encrypted-tbn1.gstatic.com/shopping?q=tbn:ANd9GcSNsESOQ4mOAgh2E6ZHVEUAac-6GE3UmNystVfMrvowOddM7xzG19nI9OE80QlPMIYX9pjY5oM&usqp=CAc) (https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/A1xHf4MI6hL._AC_UF894,1000_QL80_.jpg)

First video game; Alien 3 [Sega Genesis] (despite living in uk, it was the Genesis edition rather than the megadrive branding) (https://cdn.mobygames.com/covers/4098486-alien3-genesis-front-cover.jpg)

First book; Aliens: Earth Hive (have never seen the edition I had since; it was an early (possibly first edition?) under the Dark Horse Books label, with green text on the spine; it was later reprinted by millennium which I picked up instead to have matching spines with the other books) (https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/41h9qjAtHzL._AC_UF894,1000_QL80_.jpg)

And outside of media:

First stationary;

Operation: Aliens pencil case/sharpener/rubber/pencils and hardcover log book (https://www.picclickimg.com/AiAAAOSwN59lU2zX/Rare-Operation-Aliens-Stationery-Lot-Of-3-Packs.webp) (https://www.google.com/search?sca_esv=fa2eff043ab95eb5&rlz=1CDGOYI_enGB1039GB1039&hl=en-GB&q=operation+aliens.pencil+case&tbm=isch&source=lnms&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwiazsaq0IGEAxXEZ0EAHfBaAGcQ0pQJegQIDhAB&biw=393&bih=665&dpr=3#imgrc=J_tB1yUWndjf4M)

First toy;

Kenner Scorpion Alien (chosen as it was the figure that best resembled the xenos in 'Aliens' and the facehugger included was the closest to most 'natural' colour. My first copy of ALIEN (1979) on home video was an ex-rental Betamax, bought from a video library in Salisbury, South Australia - close to the Parabanks Shopping Centre, in 1985.

The Betamax videotape was in excellent condition, the film in fullscreen. I remember it had the earlier audio (with the different music cues and alternate effects). I owned it up until 1994, when it got chewed up in a friend's VCR. It didn't really matter at the time though, as the film was reissued on VHS in 1991 (also in fullscreen, which I bought). Great times!

I remember seeing one of the cars from Mad Max 3 outside a video rental in Adelaide in 1986. Can't remember the suburb though.

Fantastic topic!

I can't actually remember what the first actual thing I owned was. I remember I eventually inherited by Dad's VHS of Aliens and Predator but I'm positive I'd already taped Alien and Aliens SE off the TV myself by then. The first game was owned was Alien Trilogy on the Sega Saturn but that was a family console.

The first things I brought with my own money were Kenner's Bull Alien and my first comic was the final issue of Dredd vs Aliens. My first book was an Omnibus of Aliens: Earth Hive/Nightmare Asylum. I just can't remember which of those came first.

I saw a large buggy from the same film (MAD MAX 3), parked at a service station, just outside of the Adelaide city in 1989. Walked up to it with two schoolmates (skipped school that day) to touch it. Wasn't sure if it was a replica, or an original prop used in the film?

Considering it was shot in Coober Pedy it wouldn't surprise me if it was one of the real cars. If not it was a great replica.

Thats really cool. Thanks for sharing those great memories! I was always jealous of people who had loads of the Kenner toys, but my knowledge of the characters and the Alien life cycle began by playing with those figures. But I share a lot of your experiences - most of us seem to be of a similar generation. Aside from maybe Pred 2 on the Mega Drive, Trilogy on the PSone was my first game. I still have it on the shelf!

Great book!

Came across this back in High School. The art teacher owned a copy. The school library also had the novelisation and comic book. 1987 was a good year.

About comics, I think the "War on Earth" comic.

My first physical media of Alien that I had was the AlienĀ³ for the sega genesis. God I love that game, it was my first entry to the series when I was 4 or 5 years old, then I watched Alien Resurrection (my first Alien movie) around that time and since then I love Alien to this day

Great thread!

The first film that was ever mine was a VHS copy of Predator that my dad bought me. It was the CBS/Fox All Time Greats release. I must've watched it at least once a week for a year, and still have it in my collection.

The first piece of merchandise was the Hicks Kenner figure. Again thanks to my dad. He took me to a local toy store and they had the whole line available, but Hicks looked the coolest.

That same day we then went to my Grandmother's house and she had recorded Aliens off like channel 5 or something. That also got into the weekly rotation too.

I've never read any of the EU or novelisations of the films but I did find Aliens Vs Predator War, and that was the first graphic novel I picked up of either franchise. Over the years I've added a bunch of the individual issues to my collection.

Gotta give my Dad huge props for introducing me to some great stuff at a young age, maybe a little too young. :laugh:

Same to my Grandmother too because she recorded so many films, and it was at her house that I first saw stuff like Total Recall, Robocop and all that 80s/90s goodness.

I do actually, I kept hold of Hicks but I don't think I have many of the accessories any more.

I've added to that line since too. Picked up a Ripley, Drake and Power Loader.

The Deadliest of the Species comic, one of the most reviled - yet close to my heart - AvP comics ever made...at least according to the internet.  I think that was the first media I actually "owned" owned.  Then after that, an Alien figurine because eons ago I was pretty into Alien.

Hello fellow Adelaidian!  ;D

My elder brother had the original Alien VHS release (still has it) + Alien Photo Novel and Making off book back in 1979/1980.

Personally though the first thing I did by was issue 1 of Nightmare Asylum back in 1989.

my first alien VHS was a collector's item with 3 cassettes (I think it was 1992)
Alien/Aliens SE/making of Alien 3
From then on things really took off.

I bought Predator 1 and 2 when the DVDs came out.
With P2 I realized that the TV broadcast here actually contained more scenes than my DVD at the time.
King Willie's "Skull Cleansing" was missing...
It wasn't until I got the Predator 2 SE that everything was included.
Crazy...

No, unfortunately not.
I bought both as individual discs.
The Predator 2 disc which was cut was the first DVD version available. As far as I know, all later ones were uncut.
Later I got the Predator 3D version, but it is unusable, the 3D effect here is not nearly as good as Jurassic Park, for example.
