In 2017 when they showed Alien in theaters for Alien Day they showed a clip from Covenant since it was coming out that year. Maybe they'll do the same for Romulus as well

I'm betting they'll have some new ROMULUS footage to screen with this event. Otherwise I don't think we'll get a full trailer until June or July.

Just for clarification, this is worldwide? Not just for the Aussie anniversary screenings?

I guess we're getting the extended Romulus clip for Alien day then?

Would be a bad idea to release it in cinemas exclusively, otherwise you end up with dozens of iffy phone recorded bootlegs on the internet.

So I perhaps have been looking in the wrong places but were there select places that held screenings for Alien³ for it's 30th anniversary back in 2022, I'm aware that the film and Alien4Resurrection weren't as as popular as Alien and AlienS so that may have affected that decision, also seeing how stingy Disney can be because they supposedly denied permission for a certain cinema to show Alien.

I remember the director Stephen Hopkins in an interview with AVP Galaxy said there was consideration to have a 30th anniversary showing of Predator 2 but cancelled when unsatisfied with The Predator 2018 reception, 😑 that really grinds my gears.

Perhaps IF they decide to give the upcoming Prey's sequel and BadLands the theatrical treatment they may give Predator2 a much needed re-release, I would absolutely love a marathon cinema extravaganza of these movies, even when the instalments are a mixed bag I love the Alien and Predator Legacy. 😊

Depending on where you live there are usually independent theater chains and revival houses that will be granted the license to screen certain films. Here in Los Angeles they screen the various ALIEN sequels every few years or so. There was a big marathon planned by a company called Nostalgic Nebula to screen the original four films on Memorial Day weekend but Disney pulled the license when they announced the re-release of ALIEN for April 26th. Kevin Smith mentioned that Warner Bros. had done the same for the early BATMAN films around the time of the THE FLASH being released in theaters.

I'm waiting for showtimes to open up at my preferred theatre chain (Harkins), they list 'Alien' as coming for Alien Day but haven't offered any ticket sales yet.

In the meantime my dad and I got tickets to see 'The Mummy' on the 27th.

The only way to see it.

I first saw it on a sh*tty, full-screen VHS tape in late 1983. I didn't mind, though. I was so caught up in the storytelling to notice that 50% of the image was missing. Lol.

I hope my AMC doesn't put this on a small screen.

Went to go see the rerelease of Jurassic Park last year and it was on the smallest possible screen they had, not much bigger than my decent sized tv at home. Didn't even feel worth it. Especially compared to seeing Jaws rereleased in IMAX before that, which was awesome.

Don't think I'll be able to go right on 4/26, but definitely grabbing a ticket for Saturday the 27th once the theater allows me to do so.

Always will prefer the Ox myself, like the image of Newt screaming trapped in the cryotube, it takes the thing into gratuitous territory for me honestly.

I do not see this new screening happening anywhere in the United Kingdom please correct me if otherwise.

Not overly upset though, saw Alien on the fortieth and Alien and Aliens as a double feature only last year.

On the topic of Ox vs Dog: I'm really torn here. On one hand Ox scene is part of Assembly Cut and I love everything about Assembly Cut. It also feels like more thought went into filming that scene as opposed to the Dog one which feels pretty hastily put together (which it probably was).

On the other hand, seeing Runner come out of a living dog feels more emotionally impactful than from a big cow's corpse. Also it seems more logical that something so ferocious as Runner would come out of a predatory creature rather than a relatively peaceful one

Was lucky enough to finally catch a screening of Aliens on Halloween last year with attendance and an interview from Noah Howley.

I agree, I like the assembly cut more all around, but much prefer the dog for impact.

There's a particular minor editing difference in the theatrical cut that I prefer.
In the ox version we get a shot of a digital looking bambi burster stumbling and running down the corrider.
In the dog version we get a simple shot of the camera pulling away from the dog's body, while only hearing the bambi scurry off.
It's simpler but I've definitely always found the dog version here to be more eerie and impactful, personally.

Mind you, Texas Chainsaw Massacre came out in 1974. It was pretty graphic for that time. Stars Wars comes out in 1977, which is the big space opera and popularized space again. So, Alien comes in 1979 which is everyone's space nightmare. For that time in film, it was original and well, graphic compared to today's standards when it comes to film making.

I was going to say this, TCM was filmed for a PG rating (no, seriously). There's very little blood or on-screen violence, no sex or nudity, and no profanity.

Tobe Hooper just learned the hard way that showing less and implying things makes the movie 10x scarier and he earned himself an R-rating. see also: Jaws, where serendipitously the mechanical shark didn't work so Spielberg had to imply everything and it ended up making it more effective.

For that matter, see also: 'Alien', where Ridley Scott recognized that the Alien suit was a bit questionable if you saw it full on, so you don't get a good look at it until the end.

The film does have some really nasty moments in it - there's the tail whip that rips a character's jaw right off their face/head! And the shower deaths.

For that matter, see also: 'Alien', where Ridley Scott recognized that the Alien suit was a bit questionable if you saw it full on, so you don't get a good look at it until the end.

Quint's death was more graphic than anything seen in The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974).

And they only got away with it by successfully arguing that since the violence was perpetrated by a shark, it's not like kids could go out and copy it.

Yes.

Although, Spielberg, still had to shave (more than) a few frames off the severed-leg footage (estuary attack). Probably for the best, as the leg does look phoney.

it's in the background notes of David Rinzler's Alien The Making of Book.

I'm not really surprised by Lucas's reaction, but Spielberg also had a relatively brutal film with Jaws, as has already been mentioned here.

OK, those were just their first reactions to it.
I even think I read statements from interviews or saw them on TV where both praised the film several years later.
Funnily enough, according to Rinzler's reports, Spielberg had also read the script for Alien and told those in charge that it would be stupid to miss the chance to make the film.
So it contradicts itself a bit

That gut reaction from Spielberg & Lucas isn't entirely shocking, given the way they've since distanced themselves from their own portrayal of brutality in Temple of Doom, dismissing their own film as the product of a time when they were both in dark places (going through divorces).

Anyways, Temple of Doom rocks.

For me it's the weakest of the films (excepting Dial, which I will probably never see).

Yep, even behind Crystal Skull.
Title: Re: Alien returning to theaters starting April 26th!
Post by: Nightmare Asylum on Apr 18, 2024, 02:46:55 PM
I genuinely really dig Crystal Skull (I'm also a Star Wars prequel enjoyer, so I guess 2000s-era Lucas just does it for me; I miss having his voice in cinema and I really hope that he is making those indie films that he always talked about to screen for his friends).

Dial of Destiny's biggest problem, in my opinion, is that the directing is never really as kinetic or lively as Spielberg's. Not to knock Mangold, I'm a fan of him in general, but Spielberg's absence is noticeable. Ford gives one hell of a performance, though, and that movie is really his baby at the end of the day. I enjoyed it on first viewing; haven't seen it since but I'm sure I will end up watching it again down the line.

If Raiders is the ultimate throwback to the pulp serials that inspired Lucas (and potentially my favorite Spielberg movie, full stop), then Temple of Doom just straight up is one of those serials brought to life in the (then) modern day (problematic representational elements included, unfortunately). It has a lot of appeal to it as this rip-roaring adventure that's just always on the move, and also doubles as a pretty horrifying 80s fantasy movie. There's so much to love there, even though it isn't quite the masterpiece that is Raiders. It was my favorite Indy movie as a kid, and I'll never second guess myself as to why that was the case - there's a crazy mine cart chase, lots of gross bugs, and a dude gets his heart ripped out, for crying out loud!

I would love to get a clip, of course, but I'd also be more than ok with it if it's just the conversation.

The Hayden Orpheum Picture Palace makes it sound like a clip from the actual film. We know two seperate clips were shown at CinemaCon 2024, so we know they have the material available and ready.

If there is a clip, I'm guessing it'll be introduced by Scott & Alvarez within their back and forth discussion, rather than something that rolls separately from that.

Though a part of me still wonders if perhaps that discussion might just be what some theaters are referring to when they cite a preview of Romulus.

Two separate Australian theatres have now claimed there will be a "sneek peek" from Romulus included in the 45th anniversary screenings.

Not sure if this includes all other territories as well or not.

All we know for sure is that two clips from the film were shown at CinemaCon, so we know they have clips ready for public viewing.

Just got back from seeing the movie with my dad. It had the Fede/Ridley interview. Nothing particularly groundbreaking about Alien or Romulus, but still kinda neat.

Turns out my dad had never seen Alien. He thought he had, but it was entirely cultural osmosis (he knew what facehuggers and chestbursters were) or bits and pieces of other Alien movies. In the end he thought it was "f**king scary". He was also convinced that Jones was going to end up being an Alien somehow.
