Now this is where gradually following the entire cast/crew on IG throughout filming will come in handy.
**BTS starts at 3rd photo in reel.
QuoteAfter being quiet about this film for over a year to the first time I've seen this film finished in Oklahoma this spring, I knew it would be something special. Not only for movie fans, but more specifically First Nation and Native American people across Turtle Island, indigenous people across the world. I've never seen a more ethically and properly produced Hollywood film portraying Indigenous people. From the hiring of all the indigenous cast thanks to the help of Comanche producer Jhane Myers, then the filming on reserve land to the hiring indigenous crew members, the inclusivity that this film has provided has been ground breaking and long overdue. Dan Trachtenberg did a phenomenal job and I can't thank him enough. He was very open minded, well intended and receptive to the Ndn peoples input, especially the Comanche Nation (yenno how blunt indians can be lol), and I can't begin to tell y'all how proud I am of my girlfriend Amber, to be the first Native American woman to be an action hero and lead such a giant franchise, it has never been done before, and it doesn't get talked about enough. She did it for the Indigenous people that didn't have anything to look up to growing up n say "I wanna be like that person", she did it with our youth in mind to know that it's possible, and that's the most admirable part about this whole thing. I can't think of anybody better suited to represent our people. But that's enough from me, go watch Prey and you'll see what I'm talking about.

QuoteIm very proud of this one. Prey was a challenging film to work on which is my favourite kind. So much problem solving went into this one!
I am so thankful we pushed really hard to use a real thermal camera for the iconic Predator vision shots. I worked closely with Ryan Cook our VFX supervisor to come up with a poor man's stereographic rig built by our brilliant 1st @pascalbois and @larabannister
**New one- 2nd from last
QuoteI didn't know what to expect when I auditioned for this role and got the part along side some of the best human beings I've ever worked with. It was an honour to represent the Comanche Nation in this film! Learning the different words in Nʉmʉnʉ was so interesting. I'm really proud of everyone that took part in making this story come to life on the big screen. @dannytrs did an outstanding job and deserves a ton of credit for this amazing film. I hope you all enjoy this film! Out now on Hulu and Disney+ 🏹⚡️

QuoteThis is very close to the Final Design for War Chief Kehetu for the film PREY. Amazing film, just watched it, check it out!
It was important to stay true to the historical Comanche culture as well as the materials, motifs and designs authentic to their 17th and 18th century time period.
I was very fortunate to work under both Director Dan Trachtenberg and costume designer Stephanie Porter.

Quote*spoilers for 'prey' in the slides!* This was me last summer and my pal Predator. They're very friendly once you get to know them. Also so very fun to hunt with because they have all the latest gear the 1710's have to offer! But be careful because if they step on you it may hurt and they might mistake you for a booby trap and spear you with their very long arm-swords. Whoops!

warrenbigbull About #PREY, it's the first production I've ever worked on and I gotta say that I am immensely proud of what was created. The thing I'm most grateful for is the amazing people I got to work alongside, from top to bottom every person gave this experience there all and I'm proud to be counted among them.
Indigenous representation is important and this production hit the nail on the head, I look forward to seeing what this does for many youth that are still looking for a voice and image. Huge shout out to @thejhane for what she did for us and what she continues to do.

nelsonhleis And then there's this guy. I heard @dakota_beavers before I met him. A number of times. I'd be in my room, and I'd hear someone's incredible singing voice reverberating down the hallway. I called it The Country Music Angel (I did a video post about it a year ago) because it seemed like this omnipresent, leathery, buttery voice coming from the heavens. What a voice! alanvillanueva_art Here are more War Paint, headdress, hair and tattoo concept designs I illustrated for #prey under the direction of Director Dan Trachtenberg and guidance from Producer Jhane Myers. Thank you SO much for having me!
There were tons of historical research images in the pot.
The challenge I faced with these concepts was to help create designs that looked rad while also having a pure Comanche influence with the motifs, designs and patterns.
Ultimately to respect and preserve the historical Comanche culture and aesthetic in the film, from what I had the pleasure of watching hulu , only Comanche details were utilized for the early 1700's time period. I had so much fun working on these!

dakota_beavers Mark Nugent and myself. This guy is fantastic. Helped me make progress by leaps and bounds on the horses. Couldn't have done it without him. Also thank you to @randa_nugent & @xxcalfroperxx
alanvillanueva_art This was my concept for Big Beard the Fur Trapper. Only knowing that he was European and travelling south from Canada as the leader with a band of fellow fur trappers, had to have a "big beard" and was a huge jerk, this was what we came up with.
The authentic idea came up that he would be wearing Native accessories or "trophies" either traded or robbed.
Looking into the Northern Plains tribes, perhaps these trophies could be Iroquois, Mohawk or Huron.
A Northern Plains stolen knife sheath made of braintanned buckskin, dyed porcupine quills, beads, sinew with tin cones and dyed horse hair. We wrapped some Wool Assumption Sashes around his leather gaiters with Iroquoi inspired quill and wampum patterns. Arrowheads and a "repurposed" headwrap to throw in the mix too. To put the icing on the cake, we had some rolled up traded wool blankets on his pack.
He eventually dons a buffalo fur in the film.
Shout out to my bro Johan Haak @rig0rm0rtis_cotd who made it into my concept art way before casting began. You look great as a European Fur trapper bud!
Costume Designer Stephanie Porter put this ensemble together. She's super rad and always receptive to ideas and details I bring to the table! Thanks for having me!

bentayman Castmates! It was a pleasure to work with all of these talented individuals. I learned so much from all of them ❤️
alanvillanueva_art These early concepts of Chief Kehetu were early on in the design exploration phase. I had direction from Dan Trachtenberg and Jhane Myers for the war paint and created some ideas of my own.
Stephanie Porter was the Costume Designer and she provided research and relayed direction for the garments and Warbonnet. Thanks for having me!
The pattern graphics and color palette were provided as the wide curve shapes are very "Comanche." I had to figure out how that could aesthetically work on the leather strips on his shoulders, sleeves and moccasins.
Petroglyphs on the warshirt represents Kehetu's leadership on a majestic horseback buffalo hunt!
@julianblackantelope_official as Kehetu!
alanvillanueva_art Here are some of my Taabe concepts exploring initial war paint. His name translates to "our son/sun" and "sun king" depending on who's translating. We were trying out sunray and bird motif types of designs as well as other various shapes.
Ultimately his war paint was simplified to be more authentically Comanche.
Costume Designer Stephanie Porter gave awesome direction and details for his outfit. From the porcupine hair and eagle feather roach to the hairpin bone chest plate with fringe, mescal beans and buffalo bone beads...he was a great character to work on!
@dakota_beavers did SUCH a fantastic job portraying this character. Also super talented musician! check out @westernboyofficial

i still can't find the words to express my gratitude in light of everything that's transpired, not just in the last week (which has been beyond fathomable), but over the past year.
the fact that i was handed the keys to the castle of one of the the most iconic and badass characters in cinematic history still does not feel real to me.
the sense of honor, privilege, and humility that come with such a responsibility of portraying a character such as the predator, on such a massive project that stands for and represents so much more than most of us can comprehend, are overwhelming to me. having the opportunity to breathe new life into a franchise that is so admired and loved by countless fans, and the reception and response that this film has gotten thus far are things i will treasure forever.
being involved in prey and all the indigenous representation that this project stands for, including the firsts, messages, and overall portrayal of authentic indigenous culture that this film contains gives me a tremendous sense of pride, and i am so grateful to be a part of it.
i want to give the biggest THANK YOU to everyone at @20thcenturystudios @disney @hulu and i particularly want to thank @dannytrs marty ewing @sasbell scott aversano @thejhane @alec_gillis @tom_woodruffjr @jenn_din and everyone behind the camera who poured their hearts into this project. i also want to thank @ambermidthunder @dakota_beavers and the entire cast. each and every one of us gave this picture our blood and it shows.
lastly i want to thank my friends and family, everyone who supported me, and those who didn't. it is because of you that i am motivated to work hard everyday and make my loved ones proud. thank you for putting up with my annoying rants and overly persistent ideas. it means the world to me.

Going to watch this for the 3rd time
Stan winston and Kevin P Hall you are so very missed
I hope the next movie is another fresh take in time and place. Not to keen on returning to the same scenario for the next one. Simply to keep things as fresh and new as possible as far as characters and hunts and gadgets and prey and backdrops and locations and story are concerned.
Still keen on p2 tribe story possibilitys .
Also ww2 seems ripe and urban gang wars in 1990's L.A
But also a Family in Australia in the 1300's dealing with crocs could be fun aswell .. so many possibilities.

alanvillanueva_art These are other Taabe concepts exploring war paint. Again, more implications of a sun or sunray motifs due to the translation of his name.
Dan Trachtenberg (and under guidance of Producer Jhane Myers) had me explore war paint ideas while also keeping in mind these themes and Comanche methods of application by fingertip. Though more simplified, It was so cool how the ones on screen are historically more authentic and exact!
Kudos to Costume Designer Stephanie Porter for bringing me onboard initially!

Great post!! It's so awesome to get some behind the scenes material! & I agree with the practical effects we are seeing here. It's done well with the fight sequences & especially the Predator and his face. I still don't like Feral's face, but the physical mask looks far better than any of the CGI work they did.
bentayman A particularily difficult shot to accomplish. This was take 6 and I'm pretty sure we did more takes afterwards. This version of events had the Predator stepping on my body to retract his blades. This was difficult for Dane as he coudn't put his full weight on me or else I would really have died. Navigating the area was very difficult with limited visability and also the position his neck had to be in to sell the creature. In the end I felt like I did this scene so many times. We even reshot a version with Kyle! I had to scream so much in death. In the end though the scream you hear in the final version I did in ADR. 😅 thats just how it turns out sometimes. It was so cool to perform this scene though! Such an honor to be killed on screen by the Predator

Great post!! It's so awesome to get some behind the scenes material! & I agree with the practical effects we are seeing here. It's done well with the fight sequences & especially the Predator and his face. Wish the final sequence of the film didn't enhance as much with the CGI I felt :/ but the Feral Predator's design is growing on me more and more.
Wanted to see more of this practical effects look below in the final scenes! ;D

Absolutely! Wow, they should have scaled back the CGI on the face and just went practical. That shot of feral looking at the screen head on is really amazing.

Prey was released recently on Disney+ and Hulu and has already become an extraordinary success. It was my first big feature as a gaffer and was both the most challenging and most rewarding experience I've had in this industry. I have the utmost gratitude for @jeff_cutter for having me on the project.
For every moment of success, I give full credit to the absolute warriors of the LX Crew. The remote nature of the sets presented a logistical nightmare and I do not think I've ever encountered a more physically challenging show. The team crushed it, and met every request with resolve and our characteristic brand of friendliness, which I am very proud of. Whether you worked one day or the entire show, I salute you - you movers of mountains.

That's great. I love the concept design of feral. It looks bad ass. I do enjoy how the mask turned out on the film but it would have been interesting to see it light up!
Definitely a lot of red in that face, like the Berserker Predator.
I'm so glad these were released. We get a good look at Ferals face in the movie sure but I've wanted something like this to study every since I saw the flick. Since this design is a bit more of a departure from anything else we've seen its interesting to get a good look at the design process.
Hopefully the Blu-ray also includes an extensive documentary.

The more I see all these alternate/early concepts for Feral, with a more traditional face, the more I feel like it just does not fit what
Prey was going for in its tone/style.
I know it's a controversial choice around these parts, but Feral's face and overall build really feels right to me for this particular Predator in this particular film.

I had this same feeing earlier, all of the art is astoundingly beautiful and of the highest possible caliber of skill. But the more trad predator faces make all of the concepts feel.....fan-art-y. I'm sure that most of the artists involved ARE actually fans, so it technically
is fanart.
The creature NEEDED to not be the same as the original creature though, and without any in universe exposition as to why. It is what it is, a predatorx a member of a species composed of unique individuals, not the long lost relative of Jungle Hunter.

Wow these designs are fantastic. That bone mask labeled as No.6 is straight up nightmare fuel. I would have loved to see that cut clamp labeled as No. 4.
That traditional facial design he did is pretty good. Just raise the top mandibles up a bit and it's just fine.

Cool concept designs. The baboon lip-flip variant is pretty cool too.

I was underwelmed with maskless pred in prey but these designs are fantastic looking.
I loved everything about Prey - apart from the Predator design itself.
There's no doubt that the character is a badass and it was seriously fun to watch hun in action - absolutely loved that!
But I didn't like the face or the mask. What confuses me is the decision to use darts as the pred's weapon. I understand the whole "earlier technology" thing, given how long ago the film takes place - but their ability to master interstellar travel but at the same time NOT have an energy-based weapon doesn't stack up for me...
I do like the movie though. Offering it on Hulu / Disney+ was a good move to renew interest and could be just the ticket needed to green-light more films, anthology style.

Though it would've been cool to see a plasma caster again, what we were given was very advanced. Those self-guided spears, that could correct the course of its flight allowing it to hit laser-illuminated targets, are brutal.
I like to think that an elder briefed
Feral before the hunt and wasn't given the option to use the beloved plasma caster.
I like to think it did not exist yet, purely just to kick out AVP 2004 and AVP Requiem.
I'd prefer it if the plasmacaster existed and just went unused. We've seen Predators who opted to not use them like various members of the Lost Tribe and Falconer. Feral could easily be a case where he didn't use one on that particular hunt or didn't have one.
And that to me opens up more interesting story ideas because now we ask "what was the earlier models like?". It's a space version of a hunting rifle, so one can go that route, or you could visually explore its origins. We know the ships have that kind of technology, so did they start on the ships and they adapted to the technology to be a hand carry? Are they war weapons that gradually took other uses? Are the earlier models really bulky? I could easily see an earlier hunter's kit having some weird belt fed variant. Putting the technology at a later point in time doesn't feel right to me given the directions you could go with that.

I just think of it as different seasons, like the US has. This time it was bolt season (bow season). Next time it might be plasma caster season (rifle season).
AVP's depiction's so dull, because it shows they are static through time, instead of getting a look at earlier iterations of the Plasma Caster.
Quote from: BlueMarsalis79 on Sep 28, 2022, 09:10:26 AMAVP's depiction's so dull, because it shows they are static through time, instead of getting a look at earlier iterations of the Plasma Caster.
Then again the AVP games were guilty of the same thing too. Predators just don't change much.
In the OG AVP comic the only weapon they had which was recognizable was the wrist blade. The Burner we've never seen on screen, and the staffs were not the combi-stick, but regular hand-crafted spears. Plus there armor was quite different. Of course, back then they didn't have the sequel or anything else to work on.
I'm not totally against the Predators being relatively static throughout time. if you think about it from the cultural standard point of tradition. "These are the weapons of our fathers, now choose yours." type of thing.
I get that tradition being a big part of the character but, I prefer the variance, rather than being completely static as in Alien Versus Predator.
After absolutely loving Prey, I want to see an Alien and Predator meet for the first time ever on film, in the far future.
Like Feral looking at the rabbit and wolf.
Seeing a Predator on the backfoot for once, going "what the hell are you?" to the Alien this time.
We've seen plasma cannon variants onscreen. Berserker had a revolving barrel, with a faster rate of fire, Fugitive had a self-activating weapon on his helmet, and Wolf was able to convert his into a pistol. Heck, human weaponry hasn't changed much over the years. The modern day shotgun is over 120 years old, the modern day rifle is pushing 70 years of age. And our first true revolver goes all the way back to 1718. ;)
If it ain't broke...

Maybe not to such an extreme degree, but I always thought the concepts of the laser shot Predator, particularly the NECA expanded lore version would make for an interesting Predator. A technophile hunter.

Notice how the mandibles are placed parallel to each other on the practical head? Yet on the CGI version they are at an angle?
ADI lmao
Notice how the cgi lighting doesn't match the practical and makes it look obvious and distracting?
MPC lmao
Yeah they messed up as well, but MPC probably would not have had to replace so much had ADI done it right in the first place, and judging by their resume probably then have not had to crunch. (Just like The Predator)

What he said
I mean, mouth problems aside, I tend to prefer the practical head.
Yeah, the practical head looks more "feral".
I feel like they wasted a lot of money doing CG touch ups that added sweet FA to the quality of the creature. I don't care about seeing calf muscles twitching if it makes it look distractingly fake.

I'm pretty sure the texture / light is physically accurate to what a subsurface material like skin would render.
What stick out the most is the compositing stage when a note must have dropped to say "raise the gain of the creature to make it look more visible" there's a clear potato/mask on the head only to emphasize on the contrast and saturation. There's even secondary masked drawn out on the mouth and eyes to make them stick to reveal all the details completely out of exposure compared to the rest of the body which match the practical, this makes the whole picture seems very uncanny. It's a trend greatly lead by Marvel movies to leave nothing in the shadows so everything is crystal clear when you reveal a character, especially their face, but it's more likely a last minute compositing or even color grading choice that was made rather than a lighting error at the CGI render stage.
I do prefer the Practial look, perhaps because it's bizarre and they weren't trying to replicate skin in a human manner like the CGI does since latex doen't have the same index of refraction and fresnel proprities around the edges than human skin does, giving it a more "alien" look without falling within the uncanny trench.
Also the fact it hide more than it reveal is much more powerful especially in daylight in my opinion.
The face in general has grown on me since release. I prefer the practical but I am fine with the CGI one too.
No issue with the CGI muscle twitches They weren't very noticeable and hardly distracting. I think they complement the practical suit just fine.

That's what I was referring to - sorry for the poor terminology. The practical is dark and matches the rest of the scene, whereas the selective gain on the digital ruins the sense the Predator is actually there.
Even with all the good work on modeling, lighting, animation, etc etc the final image is less convincing than the practical - regardless of what some may whine about ADI 's work.
Practical also looks more menacing imo

I second that
So I watched this and a lot of the Predator effects, even in the last fight were CGI entirely? In this video for those shots it shows an empty background and then they add in the Predator? Was there no practical suit actor augmented with CGI for much of the movie?

If this wasn't filmed in Studio I can completely understand why they went this route.
Night time shooting are difficult, you are 30% as efficient as you are in daylight (finding anything in the dark is slow, even with Frontal lamp) dressing in a Predator costume must be hours of prep and choreography/fight scenes are a very slow process of filming, each re-set between takes is about 10 time as long as a normal take with a very efficient team, especially if what you've planned doesn't work and you have to brainstorm out how to surpass that difficulty to have the choreography work.
Since you are tired too, you are far more subject of hurting yourself and this can create huge troubles on set.
From these standpoints, I could completely see why they would go full CGI. For practical the easy route would be to film in a controlled environment / studio like most blockbuster do so everyone is at their best but this is a very expansive rent.
There are plenty of BTS shots of Dane in the suit at night.
I think most of the predator scenes were mostly practical with cgi enhancements, the only times it looked bad was when it gets its mask knocked off and the close up of his face at the end, I still don't know why they replaced the practical mask is you brighten the that scene it looks like cgi from the Scorpion king or some other 20 year old film.

^The practical still takes the win here. I'm sorry. I mean I'm all for the CGI enhancements/touch-ups to make things more organic, real, or what have you in this case. I can absolutely appreciate taking the time to do that. But sometimes, the focus needs to be better on when that's applied exactly & how subtle those fixes are done, goes a long way. Too much kinda was done with the Feral's face IMO.
Still, an example that I slightly love/hate, is how the Feral predator's hands got the CGI treatment when holding the ashes, which looked great! But not in other parts :-X (which is still totally fine). But I say that ADI or whoever could have corrected that practical (issue?) when sculpting the latex hands? Why waste money later having to fix the hands and add the CGI ashes to them as well, etc.? Maybe easier to pull off the effect they wanted? But just pointing it out.
But at the end of the day, I gotta say here, with brightening up the "Practical" shot (picture below). I mean... :o !!!

Thanks for the post of that
@ace3g! I've recently followed the Stan Winston School on fb & think I saw some of that post before, which is fantastic that they covered the Prey film 8)
Also, I noticed looking online at a random TV spot from Canada I think. There was a new shot of Feral Predator dropping a spear into the spear gun. I snapped 2 shots of it from the TV spot below, anyone else see these?

I never saw this, cool !
Looks a little wider than the previous shots of that we've seen? Or am I misremembering.
It originally appeared in some social media square aspect videos.
Almost 4 months ago when the movie just came out Feral's face reveal was quite a shock but now when I see images of it I go "Oooh, it's that guy"
That was brilliant!
It almost makes me want a version of the movie now with that footage edited in of Sarii just running past Feral, allowing him to spear Naru and fly off home!
I just noticed when Feral turns his head after slicing his on arm off there is a tear in the suit right behind his armpit, I'm surprised they didn't erase that when adding digital face enhancements.(https://i.postimg.cc/RCVCp6Wk/Prey.png)
That is the kind of "error" I like cause it can kind of pass for a wound.

Dane posted this bts a week ago but it never showed up on my timeline so I'm only discovering it now.
I'm still not over this design, especially the colors. What a beautiful beast!
Very cool! The way the leg popped up.
