"Pencil and Paper"
should be the title of the drawing.
Sure. If anybody wants an explanation of what's going on, I'd be happy to give it. Currently, I'm working on something much better. This was a rush job, and the Alien really reflects that.
It reminds me of this:

I fell in love with it almost immediately, I f**king love it!
All I can see in the new work is an arm... :P
Yeah, it didn't turn out as well as I hoped. Look at the shadow; it's a silhouette of something. :)
Good Works, SpaceMarines ;)
There's a hint of a inner-jaw, so it's an alien... but I can't really recognize it ???

nice. very nice. could use a little contrast between the marine and the background before you present it in the competition.
Blah, too late. I think it's fine, except for his hand. That kinda disappeared. Not sure what happened to it.

Looks great Jack.
Holy f**king shit. It truly is a pain in the ass to quote on an iTouch, so I'll just say this: you done me proud with your cartooning style in the BSG drawing, it really does sell your own brand, and the drop ship is f**king unreal. I recall you telling me that you would never finish it-- which makes the finished product all the more mindblowingly grand.

I'm so glad you didn't. The reflection of light on the nose of the dropship is what gives it away, there's a very fine shimmer effect. Just wonderful. I've got to learn how to do that.

Very, very nice work, Marines. I really like the mood. :)
I love the use of the shading technique there. You erased slightly with the rubber in places didn't you? Great stuff. The presentation is very well thought, the lights and the position of the character work very well. Might be your best right behind the dropship. :)

For me, I felt the shading is what gave it the mood. Was going for a
noir feel.
I did soften the lines, but not with my finger. I have this tool for line softening (not sure what it's called), but it's kinda like a pencil made of paper.

Yeah, an eraser is just as powerful as a pencil when it comes to shading.
Yeah, the lights turned out rather well, I thought. My favourite's the neon sign.

Yea, I know this tool very well, I used it many times, but believe me - nothing is better than your own finger. Tool is only tool, without feeling. But finger is sensitive, you can feel much better what are you doing. It gives you better and more accurate sense of pressure.
Of course I don't want to persuade you, it's your drawing and your choice. :)
But this
noire mood of your drawing is fantastic. :)

This may be my first Rule 63. I started drawing the Security Officer from Marathon. Then I thought 'Hey, I don't draw women that often!' So, I made him a woman. Could just be a female Mjolnir, though.
Really good detail work.
My only gripe would be proportions.
But you did a good job capturing the action of that cock. Midair shells are a very nice touch.
Yeah, this started out as a doodle, so the proportions are all to shit.
The gun-cock is my favourite part, too.
I would hardly say all to shit.
Just some work on the head neck and arms. The guns and body and waistline liik very nice.
Yeah, the arms. Ugh... I always have trouble with limbs. :)

Oh, wow! It's amazing. I love how simple and clear is your new drawing. And I like that and how you use new technique. :) Good work and very visible progress. :)
Thanks, key. :)
The simplicity was what I was really going for, and now that I have a scanner, I knew that I could try some very different things stylistically.
Very good.

Yeah, there's an almost supernatural quality to the amount of power the image of an eye can have.

Definitely worth the read. One of the two Orwell (or Blair) novels that I've read. He is a master storyteller.

It's not that it's too long, it's that the forearm is too long, and the arm is too distant from the body for the pose, and too skinny.

Yeah, when doing these time-consuming pieces, the shading is where most of it comes from.
I'm not drawing completely from eye, though. I draw guidelines across the photograph and the paper I'm drawing on. Really helps keep things in proportion.

I'd love to meet him, lucky!
No, I'm not much a reader though I'm very capable, but I have read a book related to a few of his experiences. Shattered by Eric Walters, it covers homelessness and the Rawanda Genocide. Though not much a reader it's been on my mind to purchase and read both his books "Shake Hands with the Devil" and "They Fight Like Soldiers, They Die Like Children".
I did a project on him once and it was really awesome to see him help with the flag at the 2010 Winter Olympics (on T.V of course).
Hey, I did a project on him too! That's why I got to meet him. Signed my copy of Shake Hands With the Devil. I highly recommend that one. It's not easy reading, though. Few books are as crushing and sad as that one. I cried a few times while reading it.
Didn't know he had a second book. Should pick that up sometime.
Oh, wow, two new, amazing works! Both are great, in their own ways.
The first I like very much, it's simple and clear, like poster from movie. Even if he is a bit out of proportions, it doesn't disturb. The whole work is very stylish and I love colours you use. :)
The second - well, welcome back, pencil-man. :D It's amazing drawing, great shadowing, 3D mood, honestly everything is great there. In one word - perfection. :)
Thanks, key. Glad you like the Bond one. :)
Perfection? Can praise get any higher?

This is probably one of the best pictures on the site. Well shaded, well drawn, great proportions. It is clear that this is a labor of love.

Great work, I love the original touches-- especially the distortion on the cruiser jumping, very sexily done!
Thanks. Glad you like it. The ship distortion was completely unintentional, but now that you mention it, it does work. :)
Most of those little additions I put in have some purpose, actually. My favourite is the little oval thing just in front of his neck. It's to clean vomit off of the visor in case of a mishap.

Hell yeah. Power to the graphite. Shadowing and shading is my favourite thing while drawing, definitely.
And thanks. Good to get approval.

Merci beaucoup.
So, feel like drawing something, but got no real ideas. Anybody got a request?
I came a bit too late. Amazing drawings, I love how you use pencil. Your shadowing is really profesional. I really love it. :)
More, please. :)
Professional? You're too kind. :)
I'll try and keep more coming. Having trouble thinking of something to draw, though.
So you have no idea what to draw? Look around. :) Still nature always will increase your skills. Try to create something crazy. :)
Or landscapes, imagined or what you can see outside. Portraits of people, animals... Favourites characters form books, games and movies... etc. etc.... :)
I'm waiting... ;)
Thanks for that. I've found something now, but I'll keep that advice in mind if I ever feel out of ideas again. :)
Haven't posted anything in awhile, so I figured I'd let you all have a glimpse at my madness in lieu of some actual pieces. Don't worry, they are coming. Just give it some time.
Until then, here is my brain excrement.

Towards thee I roll, thou all-destroying but unconquering whale; to the last I grapple with thee; from hell's heart I stab at thee; for hate's sake I spit my last breath at thee. Sink all coffins and all hearses to one common pool! and since neither can be mine, let me then tow to pieces, while still chasing thee, though tied to thee, thou damned whale! Thus, I give up the spear!

The likeness needs a little more detail, but the color and proportions are very good. Nice work.
Yeah, detail's a bitch. Still getting used to this whole tablet thing.
I was also a little rushed.
try using a thicker brush, then learn to control your pressure.
The brush tool works wonders for applying shades under smaller, harder strokes as well. Fills it in as opposed to leaving blank white spaces untouched by the pen/pencil tools. I typically don't use it that way myself, but if I'm doing something really sketchy, it really eases the eye; I ususally just use the brush tool for shading, but I see you've got more of a traditional hard-shading technique as opposed to cell-shading.

Cinematic! I hear music (sort of like Skyrim) and thunder claps. The character looks like someone from Colonial America (in silhouette) until the lighting flashes and BEHOLD he is a medieval badass! I'd love some back story on this piece if it wouldn't be too much trouble.
btw the accompanying link to youtube doesn't work.
Ah, I'm glad this one's still such a hit! Never even considered the silhouette would look colonial.
For backstory, this is actually a bit of fan art done for
Game of Thrones. The character shown is Tywin Lannister, although a couple of decades before the show itself actually takes place. In the world of the show (and the books), there is a song called "The Rains of Castamere" about how this Tywin man brutally slaughtered the entire line of a minor house that rebelled against him; every minor cousin and distant relation, he hunted down and killed. This piece was inspired by that song, and the story behind it.
The link was taken down, and it's too late to edit the original post, but it had been this:

Gun beats sword, you say...?

...let's put that to the test.
f**k yeah, reminds me of Bushido Blade when you had that one character with the pistol being a complete cheater with it!
Glad you like it. Never played that game, though. Got the idea from the movie Yojimbo.
Hohlay shyet, that's badass. Particularly like the first guy's stripe pattern.
One critique would be that the cell shading ends at the clothing and doesn't go further, having only been applied to areas of bare skin.

Badass it is, I agree.
Not quite sure what you're saying about the shading though. Care to be a bit more specific?
What I'm [poorly] trying to point out is the shading only being on their skin and not on their clothing. The shading stops at their clothing instead of carrying onto it. For instance, there is shading on the first character's neck, but none on the scarf, then it resumes on the chest, but not onto the robe. It makes the shading look exclusive only to the skin.
Okay, I see what you mean now.
Yeah, that was most likely just laziness.
I could try going back, changing it a bit... But not today.
Your style is acquiring its identity and uniqueness. Love your last piece.

Phoenix insignia I designed for the police force in a short dystopian play a friend of mine wrote and directed, entitled
Ashes. This bad boy was printed onto t-shirts 'n shit.
(Yes, the phoenix does have thematic and symbolic importance to the play.)
Very nice.
You know something I never said, I think in your style it is praiseworthy how much mood you transfer to drawn faces.

The Forever War spoilers:
QuoteI landed on the pinnacle where we had starved together and, a few hours before dawn, watched a new star appear over the western horizon, flare to brilliance and fade as it moved away, becoming just another star, then a dim star, and then nothing. I walked to the edge and looked down the sheer rock face to the dim frozen rippling of dunes half a kilometer below...
That is...beyond beautiful.
It sort of reminds me of the look of David Lynch's Dune, a film whose look was probably the best thing about it.
In doing relatively little, you have managed to encompass everything.
That's... wow. Thank you, Mono.
While not a direct inspiration, Dune was definitely in the back of my mind whilst drawing this. Favourable comparisons with that visual masterpiece are just about as high a praise as I could hope for.
I'm glad that you liked this, and that it seems to have had an effect on you.
Great to see you drawing again.
Even greater to see a scene from possibly my favorite novel illustrated in almost the exact way I had imagined it as I read. Gorgeous work shading the sand dunes and with the soft atmospheric glow. The off-set title and the elegant font choice also works beautifully, really selling the emotional weight and mood of the scene. Hope to see more stuff soon, because I am loving this.
Thanks for the words. I am hoping to get drawing more. This idea had hit me in May, I'd scribbled it down in my planner. Stumbled across it again, and just felt this sudden urge to draw it.
No promises on a large volume of artwork. If I'm struck with more inspiration, though, that'll change things up.
