ACM was just shown at Nintendo's conferences. Footage coming in a few minutes
Did you catch the Nintendo Live Feed just now? ACM was shown for the new nintendo console. New gameplay footage too.
They just showed some A:CM stuff at: 1:36:18
Ah, you guys beat me to the Nintendo stuff.
Kinda surprised. Never thought they'd make ACM for a Nintendo console.
i just seen it looked good GOOD.

Holy crap! A:CM is coming to Nintendo's next gen system, Wii U?! o_O I gotta say, it looks pretty sick.
Gearbox must put the Motion Tracker in the new Wii U controller.
I hope the motion tracker isn't on the controller screen.
Kinda ruins the whole point of it not being part of the hud.
I think it would work, the full controller screen as one Motion Tracker why your hdtv is playing the game.

In
Aliens, Ripley either needed the help of a bed, threw it away with her whole set of two arms, or needed the help of TWO people together to stop it. Incoherent.

I'm sure the game is not completed yet, I think they still can add it.
for the rest, I literally cannot wait. The game looks so f**king fantastic.
On the bright side, from what I've seen the atmosphere will be spot on.
Is it me or have they put side rails on the Pulse Rifle too?

+1 for the smaller muzzle flash.
theres a shot of the player shooting at an alien and the alien turns and runs away. is it me or is that run a little, not alien =/

Yeah. Defo looks like some sort of side rail. And looks like a rail on the top too.

What doesn't feel alien in that?
He's alone, he knows the threat, he retreat to sneak with all its stealth.
It's actually more realistic than having a stupid bug trying to catch you when he has no chance.
The way it bounds away like a dog.

I think he means the little running hop it makes. Yeah I'm not sure if I like how it moves like that. The retreating is fine, but not the hoping.
Aliens Colonial Marines for Wii U looks great, but I have a feeling the game for PS3 will be better. ;)

I'm guessing it's probably a different variant of Pulse Rifle, perhaps an SMG? Maybe that's why it sounds different.

THIS
It's HOPPING, like a rabbit.
Retreating is fine, but the way its moving looks just like a rabbit, any rabbit you can see hopping around your yard. It simply does NOT LOOK ALIEN.
thats the ONLY thing i can find to complain about in this video, which is a great thing. Hopefully more and more videos will start to pop up in the next 48 hours

Isn't it the caliber of the ammo that determines the sound of a weapon? You're more clued up than me, I honestly don't know.
So will this be a Wii U exclusive?
What? No.
Of course not.
Sega just released a press relese regarding ACM and WiiU. Also I believe there are some new screenshots coming soon, stay tuned!
QuoteSega West CEO Mike Hayes said: "With such a recognised brand as Aliens and a renowned developer in Gearbox Software, this really is exciting news for everyone. The Nintendo Wii U opens up an impressive amount of new opportunities for publishers and developers alike and Sega are fully supportive of this new platform."
According to a press release issued by the Sega and developer Gearbox: "Aliens: Colonial Marines for this new gaming console is currently under construction by a dedicated research and development branch within the studio".
Gearbox boss Randy Pitchford said: "We are extremely thrilled about the potential of the Nintendo Wii U and are honoured to be a part of the earliest efforts for research and development on the platform with the Aliens: Colonial Marines project that is so perfectly matched with the platform's unique and exciting new capabilities.
"As more details about the Nintendo Wii U emerge, Gearbox Software is equipped and motivated to engage and support the platform and its customers."

I think Nintendo Alien fans will be happy now since AVPE was not on the Gamecube and AVP '010 was not on the Wii. The Wii U version does not look any different then the PS3 and 360 versions.

That's because that was PS3/360 gameplay. Reggie said so during his interview a little while ago.

Except they already announced it? Going in as a potential 1:1 launch title is a risky but possibly extremely lucrative move, and also says rather blatantly that Nintendo is moving their demographic... now if they'd make their 3rd party support not shit, they'd probably have more title options.
Hopefully aliems are console-specifically modeled. (riiiight.)

Hard to tell, since it's pretty early looking (checking the shadowing and queen diffuse)
its such a shame that they have such a beautiful booth and we can't even see what the goings on inside are.
In the second one that's some nice Alien Drool.
Dude those aliens look... so awesome. Tail withstanding, dear Gearbox - if you're gonna keep the damn dragon tail, please absolutely nail the rest of the model. I'm pleased, overall. The head is the biggest deal for me, and its straight Aliens awesomeness.
At least we don't have 30 foot grid tails ;D.
they got the Tail blade/sword too.
The alien skins looks so good.
But that tail.
what.

I brought up the tail last week too. Sucks but besides that, the hands and the open side mouth, its all cameron. I can live with those if the atmosphere and sound is great, and so far, they nailed them both. Listen to the Alien screeches in the Wii U trailer and tell me u didnt get a little fat and giggily.

Yes, Winston added some 'stiletto' to make her looks more feminine.
The legs are ok, I guess the weird look is probably the posture the queen have but for me it's a great queen, better than AVP one.
Would be nice to show us before (1 year) after shots, if stuff was changed or updated.

I did a mod for the avp smartgun using sounds directly from the movie. Came out not half bad too, so there's no excuse whatsoever for not using the right sound.
I bet Fox'd still have the sound effects. They did provide a load of original Alien sound FX for AvPR after all.

Yah I found out. It still looks really good in my opinion and that's probably not the best quality either.
You know, it's real chicken sh*t Sega, Gearbox, & Nintendo included A:CM in Wii U's 3rd party reel. For crying out loud, if Gearbox is only prototyping a Wii U version and Sega is simply considering it, then it should NOT have been included. What idiots! >:(

Or its not standing.
It could be sort of squating, legs bent, back straight, feet holding it upside down.
And I think the PR we've seen is a different model. The one in the "new" shot has no sights or such.

ALIENS: Colonial Marines is not yet ready to be confirmed as a Wii U game.
SEGA and Gearbox apparently said in an interview to them that it's only a prototype of what could be done for Wii U leaded by a team of R&D department.
So the game could be for Wii U... or not.
Some kind of bad translation:Slipped in a video presented to us as a first line-up of Wii U's game, A:CM is apparently not prepared to land in Nintendo. After the conference of the makers, SEGA & Gearbox delivered us a strange communicate explaining that at the moment the game is 'a considered prototype' by a team of Research & Development. Maybe yes, Maybe not though, we felt that Gearbox has spent too much time in the Normandy Lands of Brother in Arms

Could be the angle. We probably won't get a good estimation of Size for the Xenos until we get some real gameplay footage. Not just little clips here and there but a straight piece of footage.

QuoteIn the week leading up to E3, I was peppered with enough random "Aliens" gear to choke a xenomorph. But modded nerf guns and bloody doll heads aren't the same as seeing "Aliens: Colonial Marines" in action, which I had the chance to do just a few minutes ago.
Gearbox Software has been developing "Colonial Marines" for years now, but they finally took the wraps off the game at this year's E3. Randy Pitchford, the CEO of Gearbox, is referring to this game as the "true sequel to 'Aliens.'" He was quick to follow that statement up by showing his respect for "Alien 3," while saying that it's a very different movie than aliens. After all, it's just one alien against a group of untrained survivors. "Aliens" was about well-armed, well-trained soldiers killing hundreds and hundreds of aliens in a hail of bullets. And that's definitely the tone of "Aliens: Colonial Marines."
Although the demo started out quietly, with a small squad of marines investigating Hadley's Hope (the ravaged colony from "Aliens"), things quickly went south.
The classic "Aliens" motion sensor is back, with the hitch being that you have to shoulder your rifle while using it. In the demo, the familiar ping heralded certain doom, as the squad was assaulted from floor and ceiling vents by full-sized xenomorphs.
The rest of the demo became a fight for survival, as the squad raced away from the hordes, right into the face of a brand new varient of xenomorph: The Crusher. You know how that alien who invested the dog in "Alien 3" was pretty nasty? Well, imagine that dog was a rhino and you're half way there.
The race from The Crusher led the squad into an armory packed to the gills with pulse rifles and auto turrets. Unfortunately it was also a dead end. Where better to set up an fire-filled last stand with placed turrets and aliens pouring out of the walls? It was around this time that Randy showed off the 4-player, drop-in, drop-out co-op for the game, which runs through the entire campaign and doesn't require a checkpoint reload.
Things ended poorly, predictably, with the massive Alien queen bursting through a steel door, tossing a power lifter like it was a LEGO truck. Yeah, that's aliens for ya. Always ending on a downer.
That Crushers going to piss off a lot of people.

Another one from Game Informer:
QuoteIn a live gameplay demo, we got a chance to see many familiar elements from the movie. It opens with a ship crashing onto the surface of LB-426. The player comes to with a fellow Marine asking if he's all right. The response is a quick middle finger.
The Marines start sweeping the area, walking through the medical bay with tubes of facehuggers suspended in fluid. A tracker starts pinging its familiar sound, though it doesn't detect anything. For now. After a few moments, the squad comes upon a reinforced steel door that's been torn open by something with obvious strength. After walking into a ruined operations area, a member of the squad screams as a xenomorph tears through the ceiling and attacks.
The rest can be read here: http://www.gameinformer.com/games/aliens_colonial_marines/b/xbox360/archive/2011/06/07/from-out-of-the-shadows.aspx (http://www.gameinformer.com/games/aliens_colonial_marines/b/xbox360/archive/2011/06/07/from-out-of-the-shadows.aspx)
Both of those are relatively the same.
Well, ok. Seems fine I just hope the new alien types aren't kenner style mutant aliens.

I don't think (and hope) it isn't an actual level in the game and wonder if maybe it just looks better than it seems if it's really being nominated for game of the show.

Yah it was most likely edited. Remember in the E3 demo for AvP2010 how we saw the Pred-Xeno at the end. Same thing here, they edited it around a bit to show the game off more.
Also, I think the Rhino Xeno comparison is really bad. I doubt its gonna be a big fat bulky rhino like Xeno. Its probably gonna be a bigger than average Xeno needs to run on all fours and has a big Queen/Praetorian like head. <-- thats my assumption at least.

It could be sort of squating, legs bent, back straight, feet holding it upside down.
And I think the PR we've seen is a different model. The one in the "new" shot has no sights or such.
No, no. I'm referring to the mass of the Alien relative to the Marine (it's immediate proximity can't make it much clearer), and comparing it to the full scale puppet used in "Aliens". I assume the Marine is of average height and build. Either that, or the Marine is about 7'1" or 7'2".
Honestly, this has become expected. Not wanted, but expected. For over a decade the Aliens have been portrayed in various games with a much shorter, skinnier build and far less physical prowess than what we've seen in the films.
Quote"Aliens" was about well-armed, well-trained soldiers killing hundreds and hundreds of aliens in a hail of bullets.
eeehhh.
QuoteThe rest of the demo became a fight for survival, as the squad raced away from the hordes, right into the face of a brand new varient of xenomorph: The Crusher. You know how that alien who invested the dog in "Alien 3" was pretty nasty? Well, imagine that dog was a rhino and you're half way there.

it sounds as if they are describing a Praetorian, ::), in one article they even said the crest is reminiscent of the queens. I for one can't picture any Queen bursting into combat. They did.
I haven't seen GBX folks mention it anywhere so far.
As for the praetorians we've already seen, in AvP2 they were on two legs and could pounce (at first), in AvP3 they were on two legs and sprinting of four, but a praetorian never used his head to ram into stuff, that's why the rhino/bull resemblance.

Doesn't specifically state that the game is a prototype and not confirmed for sure though.
QuoteA much larger ferocious and huge bull alien was among the pack. Its head was large and patterned similar to a queen's, but also extremely well armored. No amount of simple Weyland-Yutani bullets would penetrate shielding that tough. The marine didn't delay and quickly dashed into a well reinforced building and behind an enforced blast door. He traveled down the path and met with several more of his military chums. However there was something special about one of them.
Sounds like a Praetorian to me.

I don't understand why you're bothering about where the screenshots came from?
All Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii U can play HD game and the quality is

this Crusher thingy is presumably a version of the one seen in the handheld CM video, surely? the big four leggedy beastie who leaps in at 1:24 here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DHbjped9gM8# (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DHbjped9gM8#)
Or am I barking up the wrong tree altogether?
No that's a normal alien. previews say the Crusher has a head more similar to the queen.
That's no normal alien. :D

Whoops sorry. I presumed you were talking about the alien that leaps at you in the A:CM gameplay. That could very well be a version of that alien (less cartoony I hope)
Has this been posted yet? I dig the Alien score :D - analyze to death, go!

Man everything looks awesome except the fact they kept that stupid f**king tail that Anderson used to bastardize the original alien design. They need to drop the horrible designs of the Aliens in the AVP movies and go back to the basics. I thought this was suppose to take place after the events of Aliens??? I don't remember them having that stupid tail!!!! BUrn Anderson, burn for your poor film making experience, and burn for ever even thinking you could make a decent Alien or Predator ANYTHING!!!!!

That's all well and good but it was ADI who designed the Aliens in AvP, and they've had those tails since Resurrection.

Get a Life kid ;)
Alright, enough. I don't want any arguments or insults breaking out here.
Pulse rifle still has iron sights. Alien animation looks good I think, besides the alien was in fact running away from the player? Maybe trying to dodge. Facehugger grab was okay as long as you don't do it every time (f**king AvP3!) and I hope they are more like AvP2 facehuggers than AvP3; fast, scary as hell, hugged before you knew what even happened.
I'll never forget that facehugger scream and the first time I got hugged in AvP2. Smeared in my drawers, I tell you. Next playthrough I ran in flamethrower blazing.
Running away cause he knew running straight into the barrel of a gun would end in a favorable result for him. Smart tactics if u ask me. Love that they retreat now.
The more previews we see, and info we get, the more bizarre 90's manga unlicensed fan fiction "homage" this game becomes.
Kinda like Star Trek Nemesis.
But that turned out alright, right?

lol, I know
The game looks worse than AVP3.
I hate the way the Marine is holding the Pulse Rifle and tracker, it's way too stiff and not fluid at all.
The way the Alien is reacting to gun fire is sad and the graphics look dated from the gameplay footage. The Marine grabbing the facehugger looks extremely unrealistic, AVP3 on the other hand when an Alien grabs a Marine or Predator looked like the real thing.
I was much more impressed by what I saw from AVP3 when it first showed up on this site.
Maybe what the fans are seeing from the demo inside E3 could be much better, but either way I'm a sucker for these types of games and I'm sure I'll like it in the end.

AvP3 looked good when it was first shown but it ended up as a great disapointment for most of the fans. Maybe A:CM does not look as good as AvP3 at the moment but I hope it will end up better than the AvP game.
Apparently, that footage from the Wii U isn't even from the Wii U. They used 360/ps3 footage.
Randy on WiiU: http://kotaku.com/5810010/ (http://kotaku.com/5810010/)
QuoteEarlier this week we learned that Gearbox Software's Aliens: Colonial Marines is coming to the Wii U. Today the developer explained some of the really cool ways you'll be playing the game with Nintendo's tablet-like controller for their new console.
The most important thing Randy Pitchford told us during our discussion about the Wii U version of the game with him today, is that the high-definition first-person shooter will be completely playable on the Wii U controller with the television off. That means you can play through the entire shooter on the tablet's screen while someone is watching television.
There are also a lot of very neat things players will be doing with that screen-touting controller as well in the game, Pitchford says.
The device will, at times, become the game's motion tracker, a device in the fiction of the Alien universe that can track the location of enemies and friendlies by their motion. Pitchford explained that players may be asked to sweep their controller around them, looking for approaching enemies, which will show up as blips on the display of the controller.
The Wii U controller will also become a fully interactive map at times. In this mode, players will be able to play with a full map of the area much like we see Private William Hudson doing in the movie Aliens.
Finally, Pitchford said that players will use the display on the controller to play a mini-game used to hack doors in the game.
It was obvious that these were just some of the ideas that Gearbox have been playing around with for the implementation of the game on Nintendo's Wii U.
"The Wii U is really bad ass," he said. "We have a lot of great ideas that we're already working on."
I asked Pitchford if we could expect to see his studio's game on the Playstation Vita or 3DS and he said that not as of now, but it sounded like the studio may still be playing around with the idea of bringing it to the Vita down the line.
I'm sorry but that sounds so flipping awesome. Scrolling through the blue schematics to find PDTs or the best places to barricade? Sweeping the WiiU around as the motion tracker, with the readout actually moving, pings coming from the speakers, and the results being represented on the game screen for your friends to see? That's unreal, and would keep me playing this game for a long, long time.
Left and right, little buddy.
Also a stiff critique from Phantom, but if I'm to go on the logic that you liked AvP3 trailers and the end result was blah, then you think this is blah so the end result will be great? :)

Fail. It was the good old A:R alien that was used for AvP, including tail, which got a fin for the swimming part of the film.
So we finally see the mysterious Bull-Alien-King

I apologize for the feely feelings, and thanks for keeping us abreast, Ikarop. The messenger must live, but the evil must die.
And when gearbox will give you a full 5 mins of gameplay video what will you say?
"Where's the DEMO!!!!!!" ::) We got 3 pictures, one teaser and several seconds of gameplay.
It's more than enough knowing there is still several months before its release.
I don't want them to spoil everything and I'd rather have things coming one by one rather than having everything know and waits 8 months before it get to gold.
Anyway concerning the game itself, since Day 1 of its announcement and later with the first pictures released and informations, I had the feeling I would not like this game.
I'm sorry to say so and that my lack of faith is disturbing but... I just have bad feeling about this game.
Especially when I hear things like:
QuoteWe're trying to do that spiritual successor but also create that sequel everyone always wanted
This sentence from randy disturbs me a lot.
I'm a little pissed, too. We've been strung along on this game for what seems like an eternity. Promise after promise that they're going to reveal some new info, screens, etc. "
within the next few days". None fulfilled. Now, E3'
11 is here, and what do we get? Basically denied. :'( WTF? >:(

Yeah, me too. :-[
There is still one day... "Within the next few days" doesn't mean it'll be Day 1 or 2.
Just it'll be at the E3, could be any day even the very last one.
It was the community day thing that pushed me over the edge. Don't want to show anything at E3? Whatever that's fine, but at least give us a little insight on community day. What community is it for, exactly, if not the fans? It's like they're afraid of people seeing their game.
I'm just turned off by the whole behind-closed-doors attitude. They shouldn't have promoted it so hard to give everyone the finger that isn't in the industry. Guess I'll just shut up and wait ;D.

Don't be so harsh. Interviews will be coming. I believe Kotaku's one is coming next week, and Gamespot recorded some video interviews with GBX and Sega just a while ago too. I wouldn't give up on gameplay footage either :). Sometimes we just need to wait a bit longer than expected.
From the gameplay that I saw, the game has a lot of potential to be awesome. Its just there were some annoying things that any fan is going to notice and pick at. The non pulse rifle sounds, ammo magazine not holding 99. The aliens didn't seem like a threat more of something that was in the way.

Well you know, fans like to notice little things. That is through criticism things evolve.
By the way is it really 99 rounds?
I always believed it was actually 95 rounds in the movie but for unknown reasons all the games decided to put 99.

I always thought it was 99 . But in this game the max was 50. And the sound ughh.. It sounded like the smart gun from avp3, the iron sights were pretty cool though.
I'm pretty sure the rounds counts were:
42 when she's training with hicks.
95 when she load what appears a "full" magazine in the Dropship.
If someone can check to verify what I'm saying, I can't load my bluray version right now.
EDIT: Ok I've just checked the USCM Technical Manual. 99 is the number but they apparently don't feed the magazine with all the rounds in order to reduce the auto-loader's tendency of the jam. They instead filled it at 95%.
So 95 rounds to have a full functional Pulse Rifle.

Nah, I personally like the sound of it. It's obviously all spliced together gameplay segents for the demo in a fast-paced fashion "in the interest of time".

Liking the sound of the game from the previews. Can't say much about the 'bull' Alien without actually seeing it.

Oh, and LV-426 has sometimes been called LB-426. No error there, they're just using the less popular name.

I hate how Alien 3 is taken for granted, makes me hate Aliens even more.
Yah it bothers me too considering I have accepted ALIEN 3 for what it was... and it still beats A:R, AvP and AvP:R by a LONG shot. Don't worry its probably not that guy's real opinion. He just stated it in the video cause that is how the mainstream audience views ALIEN 3. Thats what all of them do. If you ask me. ALIEN 3 is your pretty good above average sci-fi movie like The Thing or Pitch Black whereas ALIEN and ALIENS are both classic movies that have influenced entertainment more times than can be named.

"with the blessing of 20th Century FOX, the story of Aliens: Colonial Marines is to be adopted into canon" - qoute from the ikarop's link.
That sounds good. ;D

All the previews mention sentry guns, sound pretty clear they are in, but will prolly be available only in certain areas.
If you are right, and theres no door welding idk why I should prefer this game over AvP 2010 Infestation mode ??? Atleast in AvP 2010 we are not fighting againts bulls :D
This is back and forth for me. At some points I'm really frustrated and fearing another AvP3 poo bomb, but then logic kicks in and I think about the great games Gearbox has made, their dedication to the series, and the very cool promotions that they've already done. It's clear a lot of effort has already gone into this.
It seems like they're focusing on showing off the environment, the models and engine and basic physics so they can show people "we know how to make an Aliens game." Hopefully over the next 9 months, they'll be able to get more into the really important things like AI, squad gameplay, loadouts and all of the other titilating things they mentioned earlier. I'm glad it looks great, but without the cake, frosting sucks :D
And this:
QuoteAlthough Pitchford spoke eloquently of his genuine affection for David Fincher's Alien 3...

You mean Survivor? Infestation is the one where players mutate.
Anyway, not much chance for it to turn out worse than avp3's survivor, you can't beat running around in a small map doing nothing.
As for the bulls, bad call.
No man I mean Infestation for sure, the multiplayer mode. Its the closest thing I can get to A:CM style - marines and aliens, the fight for survival. The main problem of survivor gamemode its the lack of maps. Then its the absence of respawn after each wave if there are another live marines.
Raging Dragon -> In eurogamer's review they say there is no squad play. Its simply run n gun like L4D. Heres the link if you missed it http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2011-06-09-aliens-colonial-marines-preview-preview (http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2011-06-09-aliens-colonial-marines-preview-preview)

Pretty much every mode is a fight for survival. And the main problem with Survivor is the small maps which get boring fast and the player doesn't do anything but run and gun, the same stuff A:CM needs to keep away from.
Infestation was legendary in AvP2. I don't remember how many hours I spent in that damn basement in Quarantine, flinging millions of bullets, rockets, and grenades into that ramp of doom :D.
@ Moss, I know they didn't show off any at the demo, but I'm hoping that since Gearbox has made so many stellar co-op games (BIA, Borderlands) and since they've already talked about it, they will start adding a lot of the squad/teamplay elements. I don't expect Rainbow Six-style complexity, but the basics would serve players really well.
The fact is there's going to be lots of inter-squad tactics and communication with 4 player co-op anyway, so some tools and abilities to boost this would be welcome. I really don't want a run-and-gun game because even if the campaign is awesome, what's left to keep it interesting afterwards?
IT should be along the lines of:
Barricade yourselves in a room and survive throughout the complex by going through vents, sealing doors whilst the aliens chase you. Basicly rats in a maze style gameplay (im speaking about multiplayer btw)
Simple n i think it'll play out well :)
just a thought.
Will this game be co-op both online and off?

It was called Survivor in AvP2. And the lame campers/spammers and poorly designed maps is what ruined the game mode.

I agree 9th Stew, and I assume that co-op will include online but it hasn't been confirmed as of yet.
and Brother, when I played that's what people played the most. The game became a race to try and pick off all marines before they could bunker down somewhere. When they did, the aliens had to work together or would just die non-stop. I had much fun with it.
thanks :D - if you look at a avp2 mod (it wasnt made due to no sorce code) but it was called AXP seige - thats what A:CM should be exactly like imho
Ofc there will be online coop, jeez guys its 2011.

I would like to have a map like Suk Stronghold2 in this game. This is a great map in AvP2 were you barricade yourself, order air strikes and run away from the aliens. Some maps which are just like this would be the best what could happen to Aliens Colonial Marines.

Still pretty undecided.
1. Things seem to be in place, but all the stuff that was promised by the team, not SEGA or ridiculous fan expectations appear to be absent or have been completely marginalized in the main game mode.
2. Canon is pretty loosely defined, if present at all.

There are still some people playing AvP2 online but only a few and it's difficult to find players for Stronghold2 because not many people have this map. It's sad but the game is dying. This is the reason why I hope that Aliens Colonial Marines will have maps like Stronghold2. When some AvP players could create a map like this Gearbox should be able to do even better ones!
the Make-A-Stand mode promises to be exactly like that.

I don't know guys... I'm trying to stay optimistic, but despite some very awesome stuff in the previews, screens, etc., I'm still seeing the same problematic patterns that have plagued Alien, Predator, & AvP titles for the past decade.
It's looking more and more like GB either lied about "doing their research" to make this the authentic "Aliens" title, or they just plain changed their minds. For crying out loud, there are basic in-universe details that are still getting overlooked. Or worse, ignored. >:( At least it's not coming out 'till 2012. So they still have time get this right.
I'm still gonna' buy it, of course. ;)

While its fun trying to keep up with ikarops rapid-fire updates (I'm sending you some beer, it will be in a Huggies box, don't panic) the Kotaku preview was extraordinary. That's what I was really wondering about, the gameplay and the aliens themselves. The story can fly out the window for all I care, I just want it to be realistic, scary, and infintely playable in the end.
I have to say my expectations are back up to the idiotically giddy level. I'm glad they talked about welding, and it made it sound like you can weld any damn door you want provided you beat the mini-game. Awesome. The turret outline made me think that turrets can only go in predesignated spots, but that could be wrong. Also scripted deaths are cool, but I really hope the aliens can have those awesome kills without a cut-scene :/
But... things are looking great.

A well written and very informative preview made by Fuchi Patas who saw the A:CM demo at E3, from the GBX forums:
Spoiler
**SPOILERS AHEAD**
After standing in line for an hour waiting for opening day at this year's E3 I immediately made a beeline line for the SEGA Booth and the ALIENS: Colonial Marines Demo.
No video or recording of ANY kind was allowed.
Randy Pitchford -President of Gearbox- made sure it was known one the their own people was utilizing NIGHT VISION as a deterrent.
I was shocked to see Randy personally presenting the demo, but after listening to him and see his giddy enthusiasm, there was no denying his love of all things ALIENS and his exuberance was intoxicating and refreshing.
The game utilizes an an ALL new proprietary graphics engine with Real-Time dynamic lighting. Meaning the lighting was not, as traditionally done, baked in (i.e. artificial or faked into the textures).
This was in great effect during firefights as you saw the ALIENS naturally lit up by the glow of Pulse Rifle muzzle flashes and explosions.
And the Marines shoulder mounted light also cast realistic soft lighting on the Marines faces and the enviro.
Lens flares were in use, but played naturally and appropriately with the light sources.
The ALIENS movements and animation were A.I. driven (ala Left4Dead) and not scripted for infinitely more tense and dynamic firefights.
Meaning no firefight would ever be the same, giving value to replay that much more fun.
There are scripted moments, to be sure, to propel the story. But, they are far and few between and sometimes even in the background.
The audio presentation was spot on with sound samples of motion trackers, pulse rifles, wind, water drips and overall environment ambiance nailed perfectly.
And best of all the ALIENS sound and look like they were lifted right off the screen. Their screams and cries after getting shot were pitch perfect.
The graphics, to paraphrase Randy Pitchford, were amazing and the best I've seen of any ALIEN game to date.
Minor quibbles include the lack of motion blur on fast moving objects, aliasing of sharp/straight edges and the occasional graphics pop up.
The demo began with U.S.S. SULACO still orbiting LV-426 and another starship arriving (the name stenciled on the side was SEPHORA).
Next began the sequence of the Marines on the SEPHORA waking up from hypersleep (ala ALIENS) and a series of quickly accelerating cuts showing firefights and the Marines crash landing onto LV-426.
The remaining Marines regroup and head toward the now decimated remains of Hadley's Hope.
**NOTE: I do have have concern that visually the Colony looked pretty damn good considering a Thermonuclear Meltdown had occurred and also what are the resultant RAD amounts still lingering?**
Here we witness the Marines working their way toward Operations (similar to ALIENS). Making sweeps through now familiar areas like Medical with Facehugger specimens still in stasis.
Once they reach Operations they are quickly attacked by multiple ALIENS. The main player used a shotgun to great effect for most of this fight.
The versatility and speed of the ALIENS was highlighted here as they breached the room from various points of entry including the floor and ceiling.
One fantastic moment involved an ALIEN jumping the player, both tumbling out the broken second level window onto the ground below,
and with the ALIEN attempting to impale him with the infamous 2nd jaw the player is able to strike it back once with the shotgun then immediately blow a hole in it's head.
Easily the highlight as it showed the impeccable texture detail and animation employed by the artists at Gearbox to perfectly nail the signature look of the ALIENS.
With the ALIEN now dead a new threat loomed.... The Crusher (not crazy about the nick name).
A "new" species of ALIEN... one that can only be described as almost Rhino in nature with a massive sweeping skull similar to the Queen's.
On all fours, squat and bulky but, extremely fast as it pulverized several not so lucky Marines as the player and another NPC made their way back to safe haven in Hadley's Hope.
This is where a "Last Stand" scenario played out as the Marines reloaded and were given access to Sentry Guns and the M-41A Pulse Rifle.
4 Player Dynamic (anytime drop in or out) Co-Op was also on demonstration as one player was tasked with setting up the Sentry Gun in the area below while another took position awaiting the onslaught.
Unintentional comedy ensued as the player trying to setup the Sentry Gun failed (numerous times) to do so before the attack.
During the 2nd Demo it played out as it should and the Sentry Gun helped pulverize a good number of ALIENS.
Another great moment involved a ALIEN snatching a Marine thru a wall grate. It was hard to determine how scripted these events are... could you save them if you act fast enough? I sincerely hope so and smell Achievement for doing so!!
An innumerable amount of ALIENS poured in from all areas of the massive enclosure and the room was soon bathed in the iconic 'ALIENS' red light. Gunfire and the blood curdling screams of doomed Marines as well as the shrieks of fallen ALIENS drowned out any attempts of communication. The remaining Marines retreated to a much larger area with 2 Power Loaders getting retro-fitted with flame throwers as the ALIENS once again breach the room en masse. The main player held his ground with Pulse Rifle and Grenade rounds to good effect until the climatic entrance of The Queen!
She rips one Marine apart with ease and copious gore and makes her way to the main player, grabs him and thrusts him to her maw as the the screen cuts to black on her gaping jaw and the sound of organs bursting and bone crunching.
Randy Pitchford and the creative folks at Gearbox with this Demo have managed to do something no one else has... create not only an incredible and extremely faithful ALIENS game, but also a proper and unique "sequel" to ALIENS itself. Randy was quick to mention that this game does not alter the canon established in ALIENS or ALIEN3. Rather answer any/some questions left at the end of ALIENS. e.g. what happened to Hudson and Burke (odd note concerning Burke as the deleted scene clearly document his demise)?
This along with questions concerning the actual time line - I've heard and read various ideas of 3 months after the end of ALIENS, to after the end of ALIEN3, etc. All I know is when the Marines arrive the Sulaco is still in orbit.
Gearbox has also gone on to clarify that the game is broken into 3 ACTS:
Act 1. On the Sulaco,
Act 2. Hadley's Hope,
Act 3. Derelict Spaceship from 'ALIEN' and 'ALIENS: DC' - This personally I CANNOT wait to see more of!!!
I am now hoping the demo level is just a demonstrator and does not make it into the game.
what happened to the asteroid? the Huge City?
Will be in the game, act 2.

then this game will get short and boring.
i was expecting a lot more environments, i couldn't care less for everyone's obsession with the Colony.
Especialy that this colony went boom.
Hadley's Hope is miraculously well intact considering it was directly in the midst of a thermal nuclear explosion the size of Nebraska... which would kill GB's plot if they actually followed logic. Apparently, radioactive fallout isn't an issue in the future, either. ::)
Maybe the radioactivity is gonna' explain the Alien's small size! :o *facepalm*
The AP was directly in the explosion, Hadley's Hope was not.

Are you telling me Ripley, Burke, and the USCM team traveled roughly the same distance it would take to cross the state of Nebraska to get from Hadley's Hope to the Atmospheric Processor in the APC?! That was a
MASSIVE nuclear explosion. It's a safe bet the colony was well within the blast radius.
Not to mention the time it would take to get there. They would've taken the dropship if that was the case.
At least make the colony look somewhat (more) damaged.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WY0NEQd3_co# (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WY0NEQd3_co#)
The blast at HH AP was bigger than the Tsar Bomba, go google the results of that, then stick them on a tectonically unstable planetoid 12000k across.
Acheron should be f**king trashed and HH should be nowhere to be found.
Another preview, this time from Joystiq: http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/10/aliens-colonial-marines-preview-game-not-over-man/ (http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/10/aliens-colonial-marines-preview-game-not-over-man/)
Wait, there was a guy with night vision goggles watching for cellphones and cameras?
That's some scary shit. I love Randy and all, he seems like super enthusiastic, stand-up kind of guy... but when he mentioned the watchman, he must have been like:
"Okay, you see that guy over there with the nightvision? Yeah, he's the watchman. This guy has an eagle eye, and I pray for you if you tempt him with a worm. If he sees a recording device of any kind? He-- he will f**k you up without a moment's hessitation. And I won't stop him. It will be long, and it will be affirmative. Painful. Don't you f**k with the watchman.
Enjoy the show!"

Me too. Pacing wise it seems to cram too much in there. And it sounds waaay too linear and scripted.
Quotewhat happened to the asteroid? the Huge City?
Lorin Wood the senior conceptual designer on the game at one point said that those old designs were initial concept work to guide the art direction of the game.
IMO, it wont be just the Sulaco and Colony though. In many of the E3 previews and even the older previews they said that we would be visiting a lot of new places.
Also the press release said:
QuoteThey will have to fight to survive unspeakable horrors and their own anxieties as they chase down the truth behind a galaxy-spanning deception that places humanity at the mercy of the most murderous and deadly species in the universe.
So it sounds like once they have done with the first 3 acts then we'll be off to brand new locations.

We've been over this before...
The
cloud of the explosion is "the size of Nebraska", not the explosion itself. The yield was less than the tsar bomba (47MT vs "40"), which had an effective total destruction radius of 35Km, but only when exploded several thousand feet in air! The AP was underground in an extremely dense planet, so the total destruction radius is much smaller. Who knows, maybe Bishops data on the yield was wrong too, since he managed to cut himself with a knife earlier.
All that still doesn't necessitate that the colony was completely destroyed. It would depend on the seismic activity caused by the blast, and the strength of the blast as it was detonated at ground level, I think. Plus the colony had sub-levels, and it would ultimately depend on how well the colony itself was constructed. It was obviously made to endure a harsh enviornment, maybe colonies are very hardy and well built? They certainly look that way, with the layers of support beams lining almost all colony walls, extremely durable soundproof (and nearly shatterproof) glass, and other safety features. There could have been emergency safe rooms for the colonists, but they didn't or couldnt access these rooms during the xenomorph invasion for reasons unknown...
I mean, when the (dumbass) colonists first settle the planet, the atmosphere isn't breathable, and with Acheron's harsh weather you'd think any living complex would have to be extremely well built to be safe. It would also originally be an airtight environment, though it didn't need to be in Aliens as the atmosphere was breathable.
Sorry for nerd rant, I just think the story will probably be better than the Alien and Predator things we've seen in the past few years. :D and I'm excited. As a writer I think revisiting Hadley's Hope is gutsy, could easily be bogus and end in continuity disaster, but if they are smart about it, it could also work. The Derelict has got me peeing, just a little. I feel that this game could help redeem the Alien, at least. Bring it back from the dark velociraptor cat days.
Anyway I think the game sounds incredible, with the lighting and dynamic AI, these both make me very happy. Sounds like the sentry gun may be a mini game? Definite purchase already, can't wait for epic 4-player Aliens moments dying with my friends :D. Die motherf**ker.

Still. They could see AP form Operations window. So they couldn`t be far away from it. If the cloud was size of nebraska then explosion must have been big. And I mean Big. Maybe some parts of HH survived, but Operations would be vaporised for shure.
QuoteThe AP was underground in an extremely dense planet
Proof is where?
Per Cameron's notes the planetOID is neither extremely dense nor stable, which is why it's the perfect candidate for high yield terraforming to begin with, secondly: the AP venting can be seen with naked eye from the colony, which = vaporized, colony underground blast or not. The AP station also extends rather far above and below ground as seen from the BugStomper crash and SmartAss approach to rescue Newt.
Maybe the E3 built was just a set of homages that HAVE NOTHING TO DO with the final version, because in the teaser trailer we clearly see a bit of Hadlley's Hope in a somewhat damaged state.

A planetoid with that much gravity has to be dense, period. And as said before, bishop could be wrong about anything since it's proven he can make errors.
One can hope, given that we see Bishop's pointing and then the shape and size of the actual blast, which rather clearly isn't a subterranean detonation, one could hope, but it seems more to be a case of lack of homework/retcon insertion.
Quotehas to be
1. No it doesn't. First rule of headbite club.
2. The
core has to be dense. The guy who made the movie says the crust isn't, and last time I checked you don't outweigh him on the canon/ this-is-what-happened ladder.
3.
Quotecould be wrong
All of which is moot as the distance and detonation are seen onscreen.
I'm sure real world physics would never allow for such a tiny rock to have near earth gravity, but fair enough, I'm not going to let this lower my enjoyment one bit. ;D
If the blast at the end wasn't so damn big, I might argue the Processor's nuclear power supply had been mostly depleted...mostly.
Hell, if FTL travel was possible, structures could certainly be almost indestructible too.

Depleted and absorbed by the Hicks, Newt, and Ripley through all the leakage before they left LV-426 at the end of the film. They were all going to die as a direct result of radiation exposure in a few years anyway. Now Alien3 doesn't seem so sad, does it?

Dude I think this is definitely a crusher. Look at the shape of the body and where the back hoses are, and you can see a bulky, traingle-headed alien rearing up (implying it moves on all fours) after it just slammed into the player or a window or something.
Also if you look along the left of the lower body you can see the highlights from the other raised front leg. I'm just assuming that the traingle head is what people were trying to describe.
This is of course speculation, but I'd bet money on it, were I a bettin' man. 8)

'Course, they could just be taking Alan Dean Foster as canon and assuming that there were OTHER Atmosphere Processors on LV-426. They may have colonies too which would be much less damaged than the one at the base of the explosion. They could easily say the opening is taking place there and not damage the storyline too much.
Which is nonsense, innit? But no-one is going to know until the developers explain their reasoning, so I figure it's open season for nonsense just now!

Have to find out what company makes such holos and most important, what it costs.
I`d like one of those.
Hey locusta one of your models on it would be amazing ;)
From the MCV article:
QuoteSpeaking to MCV, Sega West boss Mike Hayes has said that it recognises that if the game is to achieve the sort of global sales the company is aiming for it must be a top-quality product.
"As a general point, when you have a great licence, the amount you need to spend on marketing is significantly less," he admitted. "So the two balance each other out.
"But that's independent of how much money you invest in the game, because we know how well tie-in licence games have gone recently, we have to create a game that stands on its own two feet. This is a quality-first approach."
;D

it wouldn't be hard to do actually.
in fact, if Locusta made two images of the alien with a slight horizontal difference you could see it in 3D. you just have to cross your eyes.

I originally uncovered that artwork and it's been mislabelled as the rhino Alien. The actual name is the behemoth/abomination Alien. It came from this creature (http://www.avpgalaxy.net/gallery/albums/games/aliensrpg/conceptart/normal_aliencconcept35.jpg) and has nothing to do with the Crusher (posted above) or ACM.

is it a preatorian?
Don't know what it is but I don't like it.
Needs to see a better view me thinks. :)
Why aren't people liking it? If THAT is the Crusher then its essentially a quadruped Praetorian, if that is a Praetorian than at least it looks like a Praetorian. I am just happy it still has the biomechanical look and isnt just a big "fat" Xenomorph. Obviously I am still not a big fan of the radiation reasoning behind it but at least its not because of humans tampering with the Xenos or some other lame explanation.
Radiation >>>>> Human Tampering
Human Tampering = Newborn (Well almost, as the Newborn was unexpected)
Radiation = Unexpected results from a Xeno that survived a nuclear explosion.
Doesn't fit.
It only needs to fit the internal logic of the game. And it looks like a reasonably Winston studios-esque kind of a thing - I don't mind it as an addition at all. Praetorians are a game construct too, and no-one seems to have too much of a problem with them now.
They have the powers to create their own logic, and they are using them!

Oh no, you didn't.
It's boring to fight the same Aliens with the same AI again and again.
AvP2 had Aliens that just ran after you no matter what. (Not just the Aliens). There were moments when the Aliens to tricked you, but that was scripted.
AvP2010 had Aliens that spawned, jumped and tried to attack you with their claws in mid-air, just to die for lulz.
This game offers intelligent Aliens that can be appropriate challenges, instead of horrendous Aliens emerging from horrendous animals/ideas.
I like the AVP2 game praetorians they should have used that design. :)

Still I'm really excited for the lighting. I wasn't before, I guess I didn't really think about it but the movies had so many memorable scenes with great lighting, it makes me think we'll get a visual Aliens experience on par with the movies.
Also, this is terribly obvious, but the wikipedia page for A:CM has some interesting info I think. It mentions the AI of the aliens and the Runners, pretty exciting!!

Guys I would'nt be so quick to believe that wiki, that info is from 08, alot has changed since then.
CEs are still in the game, and were never "QTE"s to begin with. It's a contextual attack and defense.
Yeah usually wikipedia is pretty current, at least within days, but who knows with the more obscure topics like year-away video games being developed. How much manpower must they have? Is their a massive warehouse full of wikipedia researchers that constantly update and expand the site all day? It sounds tiring, but it's very interesting, and I appreciate the site.

QuoteQ: What are you impressions of E3 this year, of the three platform holders?
Mike Hayes: (...) And as you know, Sega's reasonably close to Nintendo, so again, we had the first look on Wii U. With Aliens: Colonial Marines we've actually been using the controller, but because we were the only third party that has something working it was decided not show that, quite rightly (...)
(...) And then I think for us the thing we're most thrilled about is Aliens: Colonial Marines, on the basis that we announced that quite a few years ago and we made a decision to craft it and spend more time with Gearbox, and I think we've been proven right by the response we've had at the show.
Q: It's one of the busiest demos on the show floor.
Mike Hayes: Yeah, and for us, Sega's quite a broad church of games, I think Aliens is definitely the core franchise that will do best for us as a company. And the response that we've had has just been absolutely second to none. So that's good for us.

As I am late to the previews and can't be bothered to read threw all in one go, what are the general positives that the journalists mention, and what are the worse?
Previews have been all over the board, but general pros are the atmosphere (most said very similar to Aliens) including the lighting, the xenomorphs themselves, the drop in/out co-op, the standoff scenes, and the ominous return to the Sulaco and LV-426. The marines were also praised for being foul-mouthed and realistic, bringing back a lot of that special Apone magic. Sentry guns are in, as well as door welding (but only mentioned in one preview.)
The crusher is new, sounds/looks like a sort of Praetorian that rams the marines and is bulletproof. I think the given explanation for this variant was the heavy radiation contamination from the atmosphere processor. Power loaders are also playable, and the marines apparently weld flamethrowers and pulse rifles to the arms.
Also 3 acts confirmed, Sulaco, Hadley's Hope, and Derelict (!)
Weren't really a lot of cons, and some of the previews were rather strange as they dinged the game on things other previews had praised it over. Mostly just early development issues and bugs, but I don't remember reading anything really negative.
Thanks, exactly what I wanted.

Good questions from the interviewer. Sounds like co-op mechanics will be limited :-\ but still looking good to me. The WiiU business keeps getting more intersting. The talk about the sentry gun feedback being on the WiiU controller sounded cool, especially if you could see a little camera from the gun POV as it engaged aliens. That would be sick!!!

Another interview from E3 http://games.on.net/article/13004/Developer_Video_Interview_Aliens_Colonial_Marines (http://games.on.net/article/13004/Developer_Video_Interview_Aliens_Colonial_Marines)
If those rumors of the Wii U turn out to be true, that will be the second Nintendo console I'll buy for a specific game.
Yet another video interview from E3: http://www.ripten.com/2011/06/28/where-does-gearbox-get-the-balls-to-make-a-full-blown-aliens-movie-sequel/ (http://www.ripten.com/2011/06/28/where-does-gearbox-get-the-balls-to-make-a-full-blown-aliens-movie-sequel/)
No squad anything... someone's gonna be pissed.
I can´t hardly wait to get this game
Can.
I'm sort of surprised Angry Joe from the Angry Joe Show didn't preview this game.
Same. What with his "Save A:CM" video, and all.
Not enough stuff to do a preview on, he wouldn't miss the opportunity.
Maybe he wasn't even allowed in E3.
I would definitely like to see Angry Joe's review/preview of A:CM though.

No he was certainly there.

Well I'm surprised he at least didn't interview any of the gearbox guys. He interviewed other developers at E3. Maybe there were scheduling conflicts?
Weird. I'd imagine Joe would have been one of the first in line to see it. Maybe they are still in the process of posting interviews and previews. Who knows.
He was definitely there. Spoony did a review, afterall. Maybe he's still editing.
He had an interview for ACM but lost the audio. Same with other interviews. Apparently due to tech reasons. I doubt anything important was missed anyway.

Damn that sucks. Would have liked to have heard what he talked with the devs about.
Not sure it's really from E3 but here - http://www.metro.co.uk//tech/games/868119-aliens-colonial-marines-nuke-the-site-from-orbit?ITO=socialnet-twitter-button (http://www.metro.co.uk//tech/games/868119-aliens-colonial-marines-nuke-the-site-from-orbit?ITO=socialnet-twitter-button)
Added it to the list yesterday :P but t4p.
Not gonna lie, looks very promising.
