"This man is here because he does not want to die. He believes you can give him more life."
QuoteSo basically David just asked what his master, Peter Weyland, requested. As the good doctor pointed out, there is a longer sequence which Ridley Scott filmed, but ultimately cut.
"We're all going to have to wait for the Director's cut to see if the conversation between the Engineer and David – and there was indeed originally a conversation, not merely an utterance from David – yields any fruit".- Dr. Anil Biltoo
So he really did say what Weyland wanted him to. Interesting, I wonder if he expected the Engineers reaction? He did, after all, want "his father" dead, and that does seem like a statement that would get on the Engineers nerves.
Dang, there goes the mystery, but I don't mind. I thought it was a nice touch to not add subtitles for the theatrical cut.
I knew some random professor who knows a dead language would translate this. It also confirms that Space Jam is just a jerk.
A whole conversation?! Damnit! Why did they cut that out.
Thanks for that, Ikarop. :)

Did he really want Weyland dead? I forgot...i know that he mentions everyone wanting their parents dead, but he also says want isn't a concept he's familiar with.
Wow... he didnt even say hello, what's going on?
Just demanding stuff from the start?
Anyway, i guess he really was following all Weyland orders?
Maybe the hello is part of the full conversation...?
why cut a whole conversation. meeting the engineer was the most important part of the film why cut that scene over some of the crappy one that were left in :/
We wouldn't have understood it anyway...
That would've been the best part, Mr.SJ.

lol, true but Im sure if there was a whole conversation filmed they were planning on subtitles or at least something that gave a hint as to what they were talking about.
now im glad since I felt the engineer flipping out was so random, hopefully we find out what ever pissed him off.

And the Engineer gave it to him. Right across his face.
David should have been more specific. :P
I would have spoiler-tagged the line for those who didn't want the mystery spoiled, but it's still a really cool article. Thanks for sharing. :)

Nah he just stared for a second, put his hand on Davids head and then commenced with the Slam Jam.

This. Why do you think he want's his father to die? Seems contradictory to his mission.
David is such a good little boy. He said exactly what daddy wanted him too. However if there was a longer conversation I could see how it went.
David: The women here wants to know where are you from? What's in your cargo? That killed your people? We made it here and was that shit meant for us?
Engineer: Eh what the.. oh shit everyone is dead?
David: Yes and the lady here needs to know why? Why do you hate humans?
Engineer.... oh shit if I don't cover up this mess up quick I am sooo going to be demoted to an even worst back water planet than this.
Obvious from the start that David said exactly what Weyland told him to say. Makes no sense to me why he wouldn't.
Engineer: I was sleeping for 2000 thousand years???!!! I rip your head!

The Engineer gave his life to create and Peter Weyland were up to do anything, even take the life from Shaw to live.

It really goes back to Weyland accusing David of not being able to appreciate the gifts he gave him. Such as never growing old and dying. All because he doesn't have a human soul. Yet here is a frail old man not appreciating the gift of life it self given to him from the Engineer that sacrificed himself.
However, oh boy, did the engineer go overboard with the punishment. :P

He didn't talk, but he sort of smiled like to say - hey that's funny you would be asking for life, because guess what, I'm going to kill all of you!
I think David did what he always did in the film - acted within parameters for his own whim and curiosity. He is ordered by Weyland to "try harder" with their findings to produce results, and promptly, happily infects Holloway, who is an asshole to him, emblematic of how David seems to feel for most humans. This fulfills his programming objectives. So does what he says to the Engineer, word for word - but it's how he says it, and when he says it, that he suspects may have an adverse effect not in the humans' favor.
Or maybe he just meant to do as Weyland asked, and was happily surprised. But judging by his prior conversation with Shaw, I doubt it. The ambiguity of David in particular is one of the best things about the film and the franchise's future.

I don't recall anything vocal from the Engineer(s), other than some grunts in the opening.
"I want more life... Father..."
(ack, didn't see the clip above on the comments page)
What is interesting here is that the Twitter Girl had said before that the Engineer did bond with David - so I guess she may have seen the parts where they have a full conversation.
BTW shadowpred - I was thinking the same thing!
Seriously why all the "mystery" by Scott and Lindeloff in post release interviews...
Oh ah ambiguity... Mystery... Ricky Spanishhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh...
Because they are listening to us. Pose some questions and see which ones the people want answered!
Or is that wishing too much?
That is not what i'm saying...
I dont understand why they made it sound like there was more to it in the interviews.
Feel like it again doing mystery for the sake of mystery to make believe that the movie is again soooooo clever.
I don't need anything answered because so far all i was correct about all i had questions for :)

Yeah, the look on David's face was classic. Just one of many scenes I'm looking forward to hearing discussed in (hopefully) Ridley's dvd commentary.
i just hope he does an extended cut even if it isnt this first bluray release
Absolutely. I suspect he wil do an extended cut, but I guess depends on when - is he off doing something else immediately? Dunno.
I think the Engineer's actions make perfect sense, given what David said. If the Engineers are indeed angry at what has become of their creation, what with the destruction of Space Jesus and all that, then he likely thought "You have the f**king audacity to ask me for such a favour? I'll kill you, and him, in the most painful way I can."

I like this idea
My assumption was that he was pissed at Shaw being hit by one of the mercenaries, maybe he saw a snapshot of what the creations had become and didn't like it
Yeah, that could have also played a part. I seem to remember the Engineer smiling too, when he first got out of the cryo-tube prior to David talking to him. Maybe he had no intention of hurting them in the first place.

No, I remember the smile came AFTER David spoke. But he didn't become violent until then.
Perhaps if David didn't ask for something, and said they had come to atone for their sins, the Engineer would have reacted differently.
he also feels davids face before he turns violent... what if he could sense that he wasnt human and the fact that their creations, smaller versions of them (ie us) had in turn gone on to create David..... maybe thats what pissed him off.... as Weyland said, We are the gods now..............
Probably something very sarcastic that David developed among the years alone in space.
I bet when subtitled we would have laughed and i think the engineer did too.

As I've said elsewhere, animatronics
really isn't all that radically advanced a science - Hollywood was doing it longer ago than many members of this forum were even alive. If that's enough to launch them into a psychotic rage, they need to get their scientific priorities in order.
Besides which, for all the thing knew, David 8 might have been a live human being wearing a medical or cosmetic prosthetic.
The Engineer touched David pretty delicately before ripping his head off. Maybe he just somehow could tell David wasn't human.

I swear I can not,
NOT think about LOST when it comes to the Black Goo. What'd they have? A living island with a bright light inside that could turn people into black smoke. HNNNNNNNNG
Maybe he said something along the lines of

I can't blame the Engineer for overreacting about that one.

This is a no brainer. All the ingredients are really cheap. Blue paint, Engineer Halloween costume, one whore and a giant squid. What, that's like 100 dollars for the squid and 16.99 for the rest? Everyone with nasty friends already has a camera so that's all free.
Still if anything was ever to be marketed in Hentai it would be this movie.

It was the language spoken on europe around the time of the cave paintings with the engineer figures. :P The language itself is a reconstruction based on the languages that descend from it. Well according to the original article linked in the 1st post:

The 'Professor' in the clip is in fact the real-life linguistics consultant used for the film and taught Michael Fassbender (David) the dialogue. I managed to track down the consultant, a Dr. Anil Biltoo of the SOAS Language Centre in London, to see if he could shed some light on the mysterious final scene.::)
He probably said, "Hi. My name is David. How are you?"
