Always point your gun in a safe direction.
Never point your gun at anything you don't intend to shoot.
Keep your finger off the trigger until your ready to shoot.
Be sure of your target and what's beyond.

Couple years ago one of my friends joined the Royal Canadian Navy and in basic training they were on the firing range when he went to go bathroom in the porta potty, as he was sitting down doing business... a bullet went right through the porta potty in front of him.

This is why such rules exist.

Don't let anyone start you off on something too big either. Start with something reasonable and work your way up from there.
