It's a feature we've been trying to get sorted for some time now and we've finally got somewhere with it. It's hosted by myself, Corporal Hicks and fellow staffer, Mikey. Due to a few technical and scheduling issues our first episode didn't turn out quite as intended but we got through it and it's ready for release. Hopefully we'll learn over time and appreciate all the feedback we can get. Anyway, without further ado:
* Episode #1 (21/02/11) (http://saturn.afmu.com/~virtec20/avpg_pc_episode1.mp3) – discussions include the introduction of the podcast & Prometheus news. * Episode #2 (10/04/11) (http://saturn.afmu.com/~virtec20/galaxy/avpg_pc_episode2.mp3) - discussions include action figures and an interview with NECA. * Episode #3 (20/06/11) (http://saturn.afmu.com/~virtec20/galaxy/avpg_pc_episode3.mp3) – discussion includes fanfilms & an interview with Alien Epilogue's Darren Kemp. * Episode #4 (19/07/11) (http://saturn.afmu.com/~virtec20/galaxy/avpg_pc_episode4.mp3) – discussion includes the upcoming Alien games (incl. Colonial Marines) and 25 Years of Aliens convention. * Episode #5 (03/09/11) (http://saturn.afmu.com/~virtec20/galaxy/avpg_pc_episode5.mp3) – discussion includes the Alien Encounters: 25 Years of Aliens convention& an interview with Andrew David Clark, event organizer.
It's very much in its infancy at the moment so you'll have to bare with us as we learn and get into this. I hope you all enjoy the feature. We hope it becomes a regular and popular thing.
But the link just takes you to this boring white page. I stared at it for 45 minutes and gave up.

Great job guys. I loved it, but I think you were beating yourselves up a but too much. And Hicks dude did you come in from a jog at the beggining? And at the start that music was unintentionally evil. "This is Hicks and this is Mikey and we will eat your soul!" *music plays* I think that's just me though

We really need to get on this. Scheduling wouldn't be so bad considering we all live in the same basic timezone (only one hour ahead for you guys), and I'm pretty sure we all at least have Alien and Aliens..
Could be a hell of a lot of fun, too. I'm sure you and Marines would dominate the design discussion as I go off on how intense the scene is and how Veronica Cartwright is making me hyperventilate.

lulz. Wasn't much of an outro. ;D Reminded me of an early 70's movie by just ending right after Mikey stop talking about what he would like to do with the podcast.
Also good to hear that one is from England and the other from Seattle. Like the difference there.

Needs a bit more research though - Charlize Theron has been a fairly high profile actress since the late 90s.
Thanks for the input. I knew a whole lot more about Charlize, but due to all of our goof ups, it was hard to remember everything at the moment. I forgot to re-open my notes after one of the crashed sessions.

Yeah I've done a couple as well. After 2 or 3 failed attempts using just notes I had to write myself out a full script to avoid a shitload of ums and ahhs. Then the next attempt didn't work cos it sounded too scripted!
The beauty though is you can go back and edit it or do it all again - unlike something that's live.

Personal opinion - you guys definitely need better quality recording hardware. The sound of breathing on the microphone really makes it seem less professional. Or get some kind of guard infront of the microphone so you don't breathe on it. That way it'll sound more like a podcast and less like people talking on counterstrike chat. Besides that, I'd reccomend having some kind of background noise, music of some kind. Besides that, it seemed pretty cool to me.
Title: Re: The AvPGalaxy Podcast
Post by: Brother on Feb 22, 2011, 11:00:55 AM
The sound is ok, Hicks' mic is too close to his mouth.
Title: Re: The AvPGalaxy Podcast
Post by: Corporal Hicks on Feb 22, 2011, 12:39:15 PM
Yeah, that's probably because I always put a mic close to my mouth due to my XB mic being terrible and people not being able to hear me. XD I'll move it away next time.
As for background...I had tried having a track in the background but I decided against it. I'll try again for the next one. Maybe try a different track.
Title: Re: The AvPGalaxy Podcast
Post by: Brother on Feb 22, 2011, 12:43:30 PM
I don't know what apps yall used, but you can try Teamspeak 3. Offers good sound quality, reduces background noise, allows you to record sessions, has a bunch of useful features.
Title: Re: The AvPGalaxy Podcast
Post by: Neon_Knight on Feb 22, 2011, 11:20:05 PM
Yeah, well if I were doing it, I'd put it right down so that it's barely audible but it's enough to cover up the hiss of background noise. You could just use Jerry Goldsmith's soundtrack to Alien, very ambient, minimalist. I'd think it was perfect for that sort of thing. But that's just me. This is assuming you're not bothered by the fact that you'd be illegally broadcasting copyrighted music. I'm not bothered by that sort of thing personally but some might be.

Those noises were a leaf blower or lawn mower outside of their window, the NECA guys eventually went out and told them to get away from the window. There wasn't much we could do about that.

It so reminded me of the dance/aerobic classes of the 80's :D...what a hoot. Anyone care to enlighten me as to the history of this? I gather from the podcast the Predator costumes are authentic? So is this what was referred to as the lost Predators? ???
Thanks in advance! :)

I do not want to give any negative responce since I consider this a great idea, but... As SM pointed out, most of AVP fans do not have that much of an interest to NECA figures. You did a great a job, yes, but the choice of topic could be a little bit more... creative. Pick a debatable subject that people will react to. For example: do aliens need to eat while they are growing? Is Mr. Black a better fighter than Classic in "Predators" or was it just bad luck for the Classic? Stuff like that. It will interest most of people since most of people do tend to have an opinion about stuff like this because it directly addresses the movies. There is often no real "right" or "wrong" in questions like this, but they do give some food for thought, plus it would be interesting just to hear what you guys think.
P.S. Also, it would be great if you could somehow add pictures so that people could see what you are referring to (cause I for instance dont allways do, sorry).

Well Im an impartial fanboy so I'll say what I can. The video was made by fox or the makers of Predator 2 more specifically, The costumes are definitely authentic, this was shot on the set of Predator 2 (obviously, the setting is from the movie and Danny Glover is there) Probably just a joke but Kevin Peter Hall is in the City Hunter costume (Pussyface) and the others are the LA lakers basketball players.

That's not quite what I was getting at. It's part of the whole franchise and I think there'd be a decent amount of people who would be interested - it's just that I'm not. And if you're into that sort of thing, you'd know which figures they were talking about. All I know about are the Kenner and Resurrection figures - none of the more recent ones.

No offense, but just because you don't care about the toys doesn't mean "most" AVP fans don't. The merch section is one of the more active (not to mention least flame-bait-y) sections of this board. Debating whether or not aliens eat (as this forum has proven) is fairly pointless, as like you said, there's no real answer. All you can give is opinions, and people bandying opinions about like they're fact is what has stepped on all the stubbed toes of this community.

I don't know about Corporal Hicks, but that material is too vague, and isn't something I would want to talk about. This isn't really meant to be a speculation podcast about those kind of topics. It's more for information, and interviews like we've done so far. We do appreciate the suggestions though, you never know, something like that may come up. But like I said, that isn't something I would want to discuss. And if you notice, I never contribute to those kinds of conversations on the forums.

P.S. Also, it would be great if you could somehow add pictures so that people could see what you are referring to (cause I for instance dont allways do, sorry).
Do not get me wrong though, I think info-podcast is a great idea and I did listen through the whole thing cause I thought it was interesting and I learned something :D. It just that I do not feel its` potential been used for full. I dunno...

The best part was getting Steve Perry to introduce the podcast. Nice. As for the Neca figure talk, I could really care less. Like SM said, this episode is really just for people who enjoy collecting the numerous figures that are out there. Hearing them talk about the kenner figures was a hoot though.

Our fourth episode of the AvPGalaxy podcast has been released. Episode 4 sees Mikey return for us to discuss the various upcoming Alien games and the upcoming 25 Years of Aliens convention.
It's somewhat more light hearted and playful than the others. Mikey and I enjoyed this one. If you haven't already, listen to our previous episodes and keep tuned for episode #5.

It'll be the convention on the next one. Probably Infestation and the other Gameboy games after as I'm working in an article on them aswell.

The documentary documentary he's working on? It's gonna be on TV around Prometheus time and then it'll be online. All the footage from the convention will be online at some point too. He's an incredibly passionate guy. We spent ages (and Gareth) just chatting at the Empire thing.
I'm just driving down. It's not far from me. Staying at a Premier Inn for the night.

Right guys, I wanna put this out there before anyone complains. Mikey and I recorded a podcast with Trevor Steedman and Andrew David Clark back in early October. However, I've recently split up with my girlfriend at the end of October and I'm currently living at my parents. I've got my laptop but everything I ever did was on my desktop which is still at her house so I wont be able to get the podcast edited until I have all my stuff which I'm leaving there until I've got a house to move into. This shouldn't be long, probably around New Year so I've got one recorded, it just needs editing.

First off, I'd just like to apologize for the huge delay in the release of this podcast. It was originally recorded in October, not long after the Aliens Encounter: 25 Years of Aliens Convention but personal issues delayed it. Quite a delay, if I do say so myself. Anywho, without further delay, here is episode 6!
Episode #6 includes an interview with Trevor Steedman, the man behind the marine Wierzbowski and with Andrew David Clark, regarding the 25 Years of Aliens Conventions. You can listen to (or download) the rest of our podcasts here.
But, goddamn, sometimes your accents are hard to understand.
I know... I mumble a lot... ;)

Hey Mikey, at least you don't babble on like a mouth on a stick! :-[
Must apologise to the listeners for my 'telephone directory' like thanks list at the start of that podcast – we had just come off of the convention and I was tired but eager to thank all those involved as everyone had worked for free. So thanks to Aaron and Mikey for giving me the opportunity to do that. But next time I'll keep it short and just say "thanks to all those involved!" ;)
Trevor is an amazing fella and I hope you all get to meet him sometime because he's always keen to chat and he's very open minded. And big hearted. I know he's keen to get to the States & Canada and do some appearances there in future.
Great work with the podcasts guys, keep up the good work!

It’s been sometime since we released our last podcast but coming into 2013 and we aim to be back into the swing of things and as such, here is our first brand new podcast!
Episode #8 includes an interview with Charles de Lauzirika, the producer responsible for the Alien Quadrilogy DVD set, the Alien Anthology Blu-ray set and most recently the Prometheus set. He also recently directed the movie Crave. The discussion revolves primarily around his work on the Prometheus set. Make sure you listen!

Qualified it by saying you try to come across as objective with your criticism! I literally had nothing planned to talk about and was just saying whatever randomly fired off in my mind, so, unreserved apologies if I caused any offence. :)
SM, I was probably thinking about one of the clips you made comments on. Thought for sure you had some kind of interchange with Colin at the time? If not, an oops on my part... Was a hectic era, that.

The only one I remember was a complaint about the lack of acid damage from the tongue rip out at the end. He mentioned something about the complexity of setting up effects shots, then resetting for each new take etc. Which I thought was fair enough.
I later realised this was a copout answer for a guy who makes his living in visual effects.

Dunno where you get four months from.
It was recorded in March, but by the time it was edited it was early April, and there was concern that it was out of date as there had been other updates to A:CM. In the end it was decided to upload it anyway, with another A:CM related pod to follow shortly after.
We apologise for the delay and the fact we have real lives and responsibilities that don't involve being a whiny waste of space about things you get for free.

Until you've had to edit an hour or more of audio (not music, but talking), you don't realise just how intensive it can be.
If any of you want to make it go faster, we'll gladly accept cash donations as an incentive, however. ;D

Come on now, lets leave it. I just hope those that do listen like it and can appreciate that we do have busy lives on the outside.
Moving on.

Great listen, I'm not bothered over it being released long after it was recorded, stuff happens.
I forget who it was who hasn't played the first AvP for PC (Ridge Top or Dachande) but assuming you still haven't, well, you should get on it when you can. Personally it was a great gaming/fan experience for me. It isn't the most "modern" game obviously (released 1999, Gold Edition 2000 for myself) but it was still really fun for me nonetheless. I think you'd enjoy it.

I'd really love to see you do an EU guide show covering the comics, novels, games, etc. Are you guys open to having members help produce or even appear on the show?

I'd love to have some more member interaction. Any suggestions or etc then just throw them up. I'm not sure about doing a big EU show (think how long it would be!) but we're good to do shows covering specific entries or areas.
I've started a new thread btw: http://www.avpgalaxy.net/forum/index.php?topic=48946.0 (http://www.avpgalaxy.net/forum/index.php?topic=48946.0)

Hi guys, I just wanted to say that I discovered your podcasts recently on the site and I'm steadily working my way through them all. I know some of them are out of date and the news is more olds, but I'm a completionist and they are great! It's so good listening to people who are as passionate about the franchise (together or apart) as I am. They really help brighten my day on the trudge up to work. Keep up the excellent work.
Thank you.

Sorry if this is the wrong thread, but was wondering if you guys were considering a playthrough of the RPG for a series of podcast episodes?

Hey gentlemen, Loved the AVPR movie commentary you did! I look forward to the next few commentaries! I can't wait for the train wreck that is 'the predator.' By the way, just a suggestion during the commentaries could you guys say where you are in the movie. A time stamp or scene. There were a few times during the listening that I got ahead of you guys! Thanks for being my go to everything Alien and Predator.

Something that I've appreciated since listening to the first AvPGalaxy's Podcast is that there's always some good track put at the end. I find it to be a nice touch

QuoteIt's mostly negativity & nitpicking as you would expect, not what an actual fan would want to hear. They overthink & pick everything apart to the point that they'll even chide the original films at times. Kids with cheap equipment & worse attitudes.
QuoteI would give this a five star review but there's a tech issue.... The Brits mikes are so low in volume and the one American on the show has his mike turned up so that when I try to listen to the show, the Americans voice blows your speakers when he speaks. All you guys need to level your mikes evenly. The show has great info and I'm a huge Aliens fan, but I turn my volume up to 45+ to listen to most of the talk, but get my ears blown out whenever the one just barely grunts. Fix your audio!
