Quoterated R for "sci-fi violence including some intense images, and brief language."
YES! There is a God!
Hmm. Don't know if this is just a preliminary placeholder thing from AMC or not, because the rating has not been released yet by the MPAA. :-\
I hope to god it's indeed R, though.
$16.00 for an IMAX presentation!! Wow... where the hell is my passport!! :)
I really hope this is true, the movie needs an R-Rating.
I like to keep this hand *holds up R rated ticket* for Prometheus encounters.
The movie is mostly rated R, Mostly.
"Right."
Okay, okay! I'm done! I promise. No more puns! Just rather stoked by this, if it's true. :)
Blammo! (please be true).

If this is real then I have a couple of important questions...
How come R rated tickets are available in the US when you can't actually get tickets in the UK (they can only be pre-booked) because it isn't rated here yet?
I also noticed there's no runtime on the ticket...a clue perhaps?
Plus what's the date at the bottom....surely not the purchase date?
The ratings are on tickets here in the US, and yes that is the purchase date at the bottom. The ticket seems legit enough imo.

Reguardless what's happening in the UK, I've chatted to a few American friends about this and reliably imformed the film still doesn't have an MPAA rating. In such cases tickets should have NR (for not yet rated) printed on them. So this is either an unlikely error or someone pulling a fast one, either way I don't believe it for now!
I knew when I heard that audio clip, there is absolutely no way this film was going to make a PG-13 here in the states. I saw Hunger Games (PG-13) a few weeks ago and that coulda been on the ABC family movie of the week (unedited).
Just that Audio alone would make it PG-13, not to mention Shaw's "Extraction" scene and the whole face melting thing.
If you read between the lines, I think Ridley has been fighting with FOX this whole time. Despite what they say in public about not cutting one frame, I think they were privately pushing Ridley for a PG 13 this entire time.
I'm with Duck - I knew when I heard that audio clip there was no way this would be PG-13. Between that and the autodoc scene alone, no way. The body horror is too intense, even if little was shown.
Judging by what we know of the plot (based on trailers), I would be regrettably surprised if this was anything but R. The medipod scene should be shocking enough alone to provide us with a solid R rating. Just my opinion.
Forgive my naivete, but wouldn't it be commercially unethical to sell tickets to a film that is not yet rated? I mean, you go buy tickets to a sci-fi blockbuster planning on taking your 13 year old son because he loves Star Wars, only to find out that the film is rated R. Who cops the shit for that kind of thing? The classification board, or the people who sold you the ticket?
It just seems a bit absurd. This has to be fake no?

you are absolutely right...but i still hope its R...but that R maybe doesnt stand for that what we believe , maybe it stands for the Right side
Or 'Reserved Seating'?
I like the fact that there will be an R rating as i think that if they cut the movie, they will probably ruin it somehow, but if it is R, then not as many people will go and see it, it will then fail in the box office and we wont be seeing any sequels. Dont get me wrong though, i love that it's going to be R, im just making an observation
If it was an R Rated film then Tim Rothman could have told us it was an R Rated film during those interviews, it's more than just gore, christ if someone says f**k more than once it goes above and beyond a PG-13. I fear it'll be PG-13, but I want to be proven wrong :-\
Wow I haven't heard the audio clip, since I want to avoid as many spoilers as possible, but if u guys are saying that audio clip alone is enough to convince u it's rated R, then wow, this film is gonna be intense. It looks like it won't be rated pg-13 from the gruesome stuff I've seen in the trailers.
But I have a question for all of u, why is everyone so fixed on this film having an R rating (even Ridley himself)?
Has everyone forgot about the rating (15) ?
Don't get me wrong I want this to be as intense as it can be, but the rating 15 IMO would be the best for both worlds; Fox and the fans.
I have conflicting thoughts on this one since I want this film to do as well as it can at the box office so fox will green light a sequel and so this gets alot of popularity, but I also want it to be a gruesome intense ride, and a rated 15 film may just be answer.

Actually I believe more people will go and see it if it is R. I know my dad and best friend said they would be more intrigued if it was R, but for us hardcore fans, we just want the damn movie.
IMAX in the Uk has broken all box office bookings records! I dont think the R/ 18 in the UK will bother fans much. If interest is this high then R or not the film will make money!
Two things:
1. I think most people were pushing for an "R" rating to give Ridley more control over showing the story in whatever way he wanted, and having it be dark and violent at times. If the studio wanted a PG-13 rating to draw more crowds and this was known up front then it would have watered down the movie because it would change the way it was shot, or it would water it down in editing.
2. I'm sure if the rating surprised you the theater would be happy to exchange the ticket for a different movie.

Because the US doesn't have a 15 rating, its a jump from effectively pg13 to R. We in UK are lucky in having a 15 rating available, that wouldnt really be a problem, a 15 can be very violent and very gory.

Yeah i agree, the fact that there has been 'confusion' from Rothman and Scott over what rating it will get tells me that the film will be a very soft R if its R at all.
All of this ratings drama is apart of the plan I think. A month out and no rating? Ludicrous.
I doubt Fox would want keep it R if it was a 'soft' R. They'd have just edited it down to PG13. If they're going for the R Rating, they may as well do it properly and go for Hard R.
Agreed. Thing is, you can get away with a shit ton in a 15 or even 12 rating these days. If Alien were released today, I don't think it would get close to an 18 certificate.

Films on home video sometimes get lower ratings than at the cinema, i'm talking about at the cinema. If ALIEN only qualified for a 15 in the UK, we would never see another 18 film again!. Post an example of a 15 film that has a scene as gory and as disturbing as the chestburster scene please, i'd really like to see one.

Well funnily enough the 15 was for the cinema re-release, not just home video. As far as 15 rated gore/disturbing content goes war movies that don't glorify or fantasize almost always get a 15. For exmple Black Hawk Down and Saving Private Ryan are both rated 15 and are FAAAAR gorier than alien, and as far as being disturbing goes it's purely to do with personal opinions.

I think its context though, Shaun is a comedy and its a bit slapstick with the arms coming off and hitting the zombies with them etc. Anyway i do agree you can get away with a lot in a 15 film these days, i was thinking more along the lines of PG13 vs R.

AVP was a very weak PG-13, there was too much off screen death's and it was not mature enough.

I suspect anyone can purchase tickets for a 18/R rated movie, over the phone or online. Its when they turn up that they arent admitted, who bought the tickets isnt relevant. So the same should apply to the rating of the film, if anyone can buy tickets for any rating, why not sell them before the rating is decided?

People on other forums have said you can in the US and that cinemas will put on the highest probable rating to cover themselves. Also people have said that the ticket stub pic could easily be done by someone who works at a cinema, it doesn't prove the rating in any way.

AvP R was a 15 in the UK. Well I'm very happy it will most likely be 15! Not long to go now!
Well I eat humble pie. It did get an "R". Fox has let their balls drop. ;D
Native 3-D shot with RED cameras, hardcore sci-fi and creatures all wrapped up
in an "R" rating. This will be intense! I'll definitely support FOX and Rothman

There is a God. ;)
And Tom Rothman's heart grew three times bigger that day.
I'm still a little bit annoyed at no mention of 'graphic gore' in the MPAA description, same with the 'brief language' bit but i'm not going to complain as we got the rating we wanted at the end of the day.

Agreed. Thing is, you can get away with a shit ton in a 15 or even 12 rating these days. If Alien were released today, I don't think it would get close to an 18 certificate.
With one exception, of course. :)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uuapyExYJBI# (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uuapyExYJBI#)
Alien got a rating of "AA" on canada on re-release. Which is Pg-14/14 for those elsewhere. So he is not wrong, just depends where you are.
Then again, IMDB lists it as a PG rating which I cannot imagine.
But in Canada we are way more liberal about swearing and all that. But according to studies we as a population swear more then both americans and brits...
In Ireland we practically don't even think swearing exists, it's so much a part of our everyday language
My co-worker pointed out yesterday that i use "F*cking" where most people use "uh" or "like". Just to fill up space while I am thinking.
I think 90% of the reason we swear more is just how cold it gets here. I know I have had many mornings where i open the door, feel the breezy and swear all the way to work.

You can't just buy a ticket for another movie and sneak in like everyone underage does in Canada?
I spent half my childhood sneaking into horror movies.
i did this often too, the problem is, that they controll it now as this happens to often and 18* films are shown at night only and the cinema is full off guards....
Yay, its "R"! Now that's one less thing to hear people complain about!

Its the rule of the universe: No one is ever satisfied :P
Personally, I wouldn't have cared if it was PG-13, as long as nothing important was cut. The rating should fit the film, not the other way around :) I just hope that they didn't shoehorn a bunch of excessive swearing/violence (like AVPR) to get the R just to get people to see it.

I do hope that they are right, I'm just being over cautious to avoid any potential disappointment. :)
With two years of hype and speculation, I must regretfully say that we may feel a tinge of disappointment after viewing the film.
No piece of entertainment can live up to what the hype machine has built and we have willingly contributed to. I would just advise backing away until release.

I don't give a monkey's whether Theron is shown nude or not (and I'm betting anyone who does would be complaining if the male actors are), but this news surprises me, considering the advert was put in the front of 'Titanic' and 'Avengers'.
They usually tailor the adverts for films with the same rating.
In which case, the fact The Avengers showed nothing yesterday is a positive thing.

^ this - I can't believe people can't tell, but I guess that just demonstrates how completely bonkers the whole ratings discussion have been (from my perspective, that is) - glad it's finally resolved :)
... and then again - a quick glance at imdb.com confirms that they are at it again in like 7 threads, arguing that it was a soft R/PG-13 cut that was approved as a R-cut - not a 'genuine' R-cut... ::)

f**king amazing seeing the Prometheus trailer on the big screen, f**king amazing.
I'm worried that with an R rating that Prometheus won't be able to make back enough of it's budget to justify a sequel. If it was rated PG-13 more moviegoers would be able to buy tickets to watch it and a sequel would be guaranteed.
Can't a film standalone without it's release having to be some nail biting financial gamble that is all about whether it's enough of a cash cow to justify a sequel?
If the story requires a sequel and Ridley wants to go further with it so be it, any other reason for a sequel - ie box office receipts isn't a good starting point. And if Ridley wasn't involved I wouldn't be interested anyway.
The interest in box office returns/profits is usually a US thing. Nobody I've ever discussed movies with face to face, ever gave a rats ass about how much money a film makes, how much it makes in the opening day/weekend etc...
I believe Prometheus will do just fine, not at least in the non-US markets. Hannibal was R rated and made 4 times its budget. Don't worry, people... :)
Agreed with Eva. I'm not really worried about money, just quality.
And a sequel is probably the last thing on my mind at the moment. I'd have to see how this one ends before I know if I want more :)

Funny considering I saw the International/UK trailer and sort of wished it had been the Trailer 2 or 3 version instead, because I really wanted to hear
dat 'Alien trailer howling sound' at the climax, in a theater with an awesome sound system :D
My way to get into this movie;
Me: Hey buddy, can you get me into Prometheus?
Random guy: Sure.
Gotta love kind hearted Canadians
Could you imagine if Prometheus got this PG-13 Rating.

Surprised by this, but at the same time I'm not. Good news, though.
I think we all need to be really grateful that Fox stayed true to their word and didn't compromise the intensity of the film. 8)
Yes! I'm very excited about this announcment. However when i went to see the avengers, which is an m rated movie, they showed the prometheus trailer which is now R. Techniqually they are not allowed to show an R rated trailer with an m rated film. The obnly reaon i can think of was because the film was not yet rated

Well, I'm more than happy to eat humble pie over this one, I must admit I never really thought it would happen but so glad it did. Prometheus really had to have a stronger rating despite all our moans and groans, however this film turns out, there is just so much riding on this sometimes it's unbelievable. Certainly no one here can deny they shuddered at the idea they could be sat watching this movie, a film many had waited over 30 years for, just to find themselves next to some annoying snotty nosed kid, that is a relief in itself. Now I suggest it's up to us to make Prometheus a real success, we got what we wanted, so let's see this film as much as possible.
Sure it may not be the prequel we were after, on the other hand maybe we'll get a suprise. But right now who the hell cares, this is a victory for common sense and a genuine fan base who just wanted to support something they cared about, and see Ridley Scott be given a real oppertunity to make an Alien film that means something again after so many years of disappointment. Sure there will be cuts, we all expect that, but then that's all part of waiting for the second act when the DVD comes out. The important thing is we can now go out and enjoy a film the way we wanted, no one could ask for more, all we hope now is that the makers of this film can really deleiver.

Well, Tom Rothman said not one frame would be cut even if it meant the film ended up with an R rating. And the film has been given an R rating and Fox stayed true to their word. I would like to think the version we see in cinemas is Ridley's complete vision.
On the other hand, you might be referring to deleted scenes which were filmed in addition to the shooting draft but Ridley felt didn't fit in with the rest of the film. I wouldn't mind seeing those on the DVD, if there are any, but I do think we'll be getting the director's cut in cinemas.
This is a theatrical release, no director in his right mind would deliever his true cut first time round, and it would be silly of anyone to expect that. This film still has to make it's costs back, people appreciate that, all that matters now is we know we're getting something closer to Scotts vision, not something hacked to death for some dumb lesser rating to draw in the crowds. Who knows, maybe we will see Scotts real cut at the cinemas one day, but for now we have something to look forward to, and a little extra when the DVD comes out, that's basically how it's always been.
IIRC, Theron had always those same white bandages as Rapace..
Never cared and still don't about the rating.
Scott is a director that don't need an R to make a good movie.
And since the MPAA is shit, it does not really mean anything.
The Medpod scene for exemple could be very intense and suggestive in the R cut but would have been more graphic in the original cut... In the end it's not the violence or intensity that i care for because we will see those on blu one way or another What would really bother me is that the story has been lighted, or scenes cut because the movie was too long (one of Scott's habits) that is the important thing to me.
But here again we will probably have a full cut down the line on blu.

I wouldn't say that was one of Scott's habits. His preferred cuts are often the shorter versions, Kingdom of Heaven being the only exception I can think of, and that
was a better film in it's longer cut.
J. Cameron on the other hand really could use skills of an unapologetic script editor going to task on his stuff.
So, what's this R rating going to mean in the UK? 15 or 18? Not that either really frees us from the horror of snot-nosed texting teenagers in the cinema.
what kind of R is it?
Cause it could be that they just curse a whole lot.

True, they should of made it PG then mums could take their todlers to see an ALIEN prequel, jesus freaking christ!. ::)
I would compare the rating system with a canvas...
The R-Rating gives the director a bigger canvas to work with, whereas a PG-13 rating shrinks the size of the canvas...
If you know before you ever finish the film the studio expects a PG-13 rating it causes you to make adjustments and work on the smaller canvas so that you can fit what the studio wants. This compromises the film, when the studio says whatever rating we get, we get... then it gives the director more freedom to just make their movie and let the cards fall where they may.

Cos the Alien and Predator flicks were all flops, right?
Speaking of the trailer that was shown at the Avengers, all I can say is "WOW!". I've watched the Prometheus trailer absolutely countless times, but to finally see it on the big IMAX screen in 3D over the last weekend was like seeing it for the first time. Counting the days down! By the way, a couple of weeks ago, my nephew texted me that Prometheus was moved to Christmas 2012 and I'm sure my cry of agony was heard throughout the neighborhood.
Where do you live Nostromo?
Is there a chance we can get a directors cut including more scenes that were cut for time.

Ridley was referring to another film that has 17 minutes of additional footage.
I will say that finally getting to see the trailer in 3-D at Avengers was an experience. The visuals popped as never before, and I can't wait for the release. I'm hoping to do a midnight screening at Times Square. You can't beat the crowd down there, though I may have to go again very quickly to catch some of the dialogue if the audience participation gets too loud.

If the word of mouth is good then people will go see it even a R rating. There is a lot of adult movie goers too and if kids want to see it then the parents can always take them to go see it. I see parents take their kids movies like Watchmen or Legion for example.

Ridley has a way of getting what he wants. He will just tie in critical plot points with R related material. They won't tell him to reshoot if the movie is good in the first place.
He did the same thing in Alien. I mean - are you going to cut out ALL the facehugger scenes?
I still believe that the rating doesn't matter. All that matters is whether or not the story is GOOD.

I'm in complete agreement. Jaws remains one of my favourite movies of all time. My enjoyment was never compromised because Spielberg felt the need to remove five seconds of blood from the cut.
I'd also like to point out to everyone who gets such a boner about the R-rating, that even Michael Bay's Transformers originally had an R-rating... just pointing out the meaning of the rating is... well, overrated.
I'm going to disagree...
This movie was absolutely not going to be as good in a PG-13 version... the topics and creatures this movie is going to include needed the ability to be dark and violent.

I'm not too sure to be honest, SM. I'd imagine there was an international minority bitching about the rating. Like I mentioned above, the most recent complaint (now an R rating is official) is that it won't be 'R' enough. Whatever the hell that means.

Whenever I hear someone saying it won't be "R enough"(in this context), I think they might be saying it won't be gory or bloody enough. Again, the irony is terrific because of all the Alien movies... Alien Vs Predator Requiem is easily the bloodiest and goriest of the whole franchise... And it sucked.

Rated 15 in the UK for "strong violence, gore, threat and horror" (http://www.bbfc.co.uk/CFF286710/)

Probably not...since if they make any changes, they'd have re-submit the film to the MPAA and related organizations.
There'd be nothing stopping them from resubmitting the cut. Studios do it all the time, at the last very minute. I hope they did, or they do just to push the R to the limit. They have that option now.
What the film companies and directors do alot nowadays is if a film in production is aimed at a particular rating such as pg-13 , a company such as fox will send an action scene to the m.p.a.a and liase with them over whether it's okay as it is or something has to be ommitted or blood digitally removed, even a camera angle-reframed, or profanity edited. The ratings boards in countries such as the u.s. and u.k need a massive over-hauling and updating, these people who rate the films seem to be frozen in time, take a look at terminator 3 in the U.S. it received an R, yet exactly the same cut received a 12a in the uk. Hunger games received a pg-13 in the states, when the bbfc got hold of it they nearly had a stroke and demanded massive edits to the blood and injuries on the weapons and characters. Alot of this leaves people scratching their heads. Don't get me wrong, i'm over the moon prometheus got an R/15, i just hope it's not c.g blood added like fox did with the abomination that was AVP. Ratings need more flexibility, so we have choice and are independant enough to make our own decisions regarding what films to see and our children to watch. Transformers 3 is alot more intense and violent than the avengers, yet both are pg-13/12a. Casino Royale was very violent for a pg-13/12a and so was the dark knight in it's intensity, and nolan has pushed the envelope further with The Dark Knight rises according to Christian Bale. These ratings boards need to move out've the stone age, get their fingers out, so we get to see films in all their uneditied form like they're meant to be. Tom Rothman really surprised me about letting prometheus being an R/15, but after films such as x men 3 and the AVP franchise i'm still very weary of him and his fox execs.
