So, I figured while waiting for the game, those more interested in how the MP is going to play might want to watch gameplay vids to ease the wait...
Seems this German player had a stream going on not so long ago :
http://twitch.tv/mendi_king_style/b/365290083 (http://twitch.tv/mendi_king_style/b/365290083)
He mostly played Team Deathmatch. We get a good glimpse of Crusher gameplay as soon as the 2nd round of the very first match.
Too bad he didn't seem to know how to use wallcrawl as an alien.

So, wallwalk is glitchy around corners/seams with the floor and ceiling, standard fare for the Alien since 99 tbh. Looks as big a mess as SP to my eyes.
Oh my GOD. The Boiler looks AWFUL! >:( Rest of it looks pretty good, though.
For anyone that has the game already, The smart gun is in the Alien Hive on the Origin map.
Looks like a lot of fun. The wall walking looked less like a glitch and more the player was new and didn't know what they were doing. I like you play as xenos and marines each match. Xenos also look like they can take a few hits. A little hope restored

I love the audio cues! MP looks pretty entertaining to me.
I have to admit, I was a little hesitant about the multiplayer when I saw the IGN special about the game. However, I think that now that I have seen the game played by the actual gamers, I'm much happier with the results. The xenos play a lot better when you actually get someone to play it competently, such as in these vids. I overall had a very enjoyable time watching these matches and I now have renewed confidence. ;D

TDM again... WHy on earth every god damn noob have to play this mindless game mode? Can play some mode where you have to use your brain for once? I guess not.
The thing is - some mechanics are a bit different in others modes, namely Escape and Survivor, where the Marines are much tougher (they got Armor just like in SP), and the Aliens can't use one hit kill mechanics such as Fatalities. So in these modes, Aliens have a much harder time getting kills and need to work together and attack in swarms a lot more. Marines must also be downed first before Aliens can finish them off, and they can get revived quite quickly.
So it would make sense some players would rather play TDM and Extermination more, as player health is a bit more balanced there.

Hey there's nothing wrong with a little TDM it get the blood flowing. That's mostly all I play, never was a huge objective based mode fan. Except this game looks really fun so I'm gonna play everything.
The third person is so pathetic that almost no one is using the wallwalk.
So predictable...
Everyone is on tdm...I think the most famous mode, survivor will not have enough players. As well as escape..Argh!
I don't know why anyone is surprised by this. It's exactly what happened to AVP 2010. And the situations are pretty much exactly the same.
No dedicated server.
Very few maps for the special game modes.
The inclusion of very bog-standard game modes which most of the community is going to flock to.
Alien games need to actually shed the TDM experience and focus strictly on the special modes that would set it apart from other MP games. It makes sense to a degree in AVP to have a TDM or DM mode, because the pace is going to work with that. You've got two species that have a series of long range weapons, and two that have high amounts of agility. It makes sense. For the authentic experience thougH i think DM and TDM need to be purposely excluded from the package deal. Instead:
Escape, Survivor, Horde(Bug Hunt), Rescue.

ACM wallwalk mechanics are much more glitchy and clunky than AvP2010, so that really doesn't help, actually. Surface transition isn't as fluid, some surfaces you can't latch onto, controls getting reversed depending on how the camera positions itself... lots of shit that makes it a pain to actually move the way you intend to, and since the slightest error is quite unforgiving when playing as an alien, it quickly becomes frustrating.
So I'd understand some would rather just avoir wallwalking althogether.

That would be the next best thing.
Several attempt were made to re-create an AVP game close to AVP2 with improvements.
Unfortunately it fails due to the enthusiasm of people to join the project and being able to work.
Such things require a good amount of people all devoted to give their free time to work on complex things.
The project is not dead but, it is slipping waiting to be woken up again with hopefully more interest.
Why don't they just put AVP 2 on Steam...bet people would play it.
Because the license is spread across so many companies that no one wants to bother gathering all pieces together.
Nice video, what a killing machine during the last seconds... :D
Alien's gameplay looks nice, especially the way they can sense close marines.

Playing as a Xenomorph = crap. shouldnt switch sides.
It's not so much that playing the Xenos suck per say. It just takes patience and practice, but in today's society that's pretty hard to come by. People are so used to TDM in COD and Battlefield where you just charge in that when you have to sneak and think it means it sucks.
Thats actually the first time someone said battlefield was a rush in game, I usually get made fun of by my loser COD friends that Battlefield is way to slow and to much strategy for their rambo brains of theirs.
Im sorry but this game looks like a Left for Dead rip off.
I seem to be in the minority, I absolutely love playing as Xenomorphs in first-person, I'm almost never on the floor, ceilings on the other hand... ;) I guess it's because of the runner alien
I honestly never got quite used to the FP view of the Xenos even all the way back in AVP2. It just disorients me personally, but I've seen plenty of people who can do it exceptionally well so more power to em.

Stay away from that damn campaign people, just play the multiplayer!! LMAO. But I'm really having fun. Been wanting to do this for years and I've yet to pop my escape mode cherry which is the mode I've looked forward to most.
A silly game at points, for certain, but I wouldn't shit bricks and mass-cancel the pre-orders necessarily? People just freaking the fack out like it's AvP:R again. Bad, yes, but playable and fun.
I think the masses will indulge, for a time. It's the Call of Duty kids, anyway, folks. Call of Duty Kids, meet Aliens fans. How are you? Nice to meet you.
In other news, I got a Quad kill with an M240 Incinerator unit in the bottom of some hive and saved 4 of my fellow marines. A guy had thrown it down earlier and yelled "flamethrower!" and looked at me, so I picked it up and just held the damn trigger. Fire looked terrible lol, but I burned those hoes down and it was great fun.
Don't give up on the game if all you've played is the campaign.. I mean, unless you really hate competitive multiplayer. Okay that's all  I think I'm just giddy from not having to embrace yet another complete failure of a product...

QuoteJust look at this... Escape on PC.. why anybody would prefer TDM over this is beyond me
Escape suffers from some of the same issues that the first L4D had... the marines can just sprint from objective to objective. There are a handful of locations where a well co-ordinated team effort can put all the marines down at once but there are too many areas where attacking as an Alien is futile. An important mechanic in l4d is the ability to grab or pounce on a survivor requiring the assistance of a team mate to save them, a well co-ordinated attack can neutralise 3 players simultaneously (all 4 in the 2nd game!). This kind of thing really can't happen in A:CM unless you all player the lurker and you need to be in an area that facilitates the pounce mechanic.
At least with left 4 dead there are multiple mechanics in place to slow players down. AI infected/randomly triggered hordes. Randomised car alarms and witches, mini-events that last several minutes. Not to mention the various ways the player controlled infected can influence player movement. In A:CM it's like "RUN A BYPASS ON THIS DOOR AND HOLD THE AREA! > 45 secs later > DOOR IS OPEN, MOVE TO THE NEXT OBJECTIVE. If the Aliens miss that 45 second window they're screwed and have to wait for the second one.
You're exactly right, Porkus. I've recently started hurling myself across vast distances with the angry pounce on the Lurker (along with many other players) and sometimes one massive leap across the level is about the distance of the first marine objective. The spawns are forever away and the Aliens too damned slow.
Maybe not slow, but cumbersome, like not very smooth to control. I'm finally getting wicked good at dodging and you can scare the shit out of people, dodging sideways away from gunfire, grenades, etc... You can also dodge forward for a sort of mini dash to close on a backpedaling marine.
I really hope they fix that life or armor business in Escape and Survivor. The Aliens just get stomped most games, but Escape is still fun as hell (if you're the marine, har har!) They need to work on the Alien wall walk transitions, too. Has anyone messed with the transition option in the settings? I haven't turned it on, just use the left trigger (xbox) to climb, but I suppose I will later.
I don't know what the Hell they did with the wall walking. It feels nothing like any of the previous AVP games.
Honestly, the entire design of the alien attacks is really fubar. It doesn't make me feel like an Alien. It makes me feel like cannon fodder.
Someone started bitching about the one-hit-kills in the PC game I was in. I had to laugh, because, you know what? That's ALL the aliens have going for them. If the controls weren't getting in my way, i'd have this shit down. I'm already getting good in spite of the controls. I slaughtered four marines in one go. That was brilliant.
Part of the problem is the way the alien seems to "lock on" to a target. Instead of just having standard FPS controls. Ugh.

I am not denying that but still its 10 times better than a mode where you run around like headless chicken shooting everything that moves ;)
QuoteSomeone started bitching about the one-hit-kills in the PC game I was in.
Funny, because unlike AVP2010 you are NOT invulnerable while doing them and another marine can kill you before you finish. Also in the time it takes to execute an insta-kill you could have just clawed a marine to death anyway.
QuoteI am not denying that but still its 10 times better than a mode where you run around like headless chicken shooting everything that moves
It's like trying to decide if you'd prefer a kick in the teeth or a kick in the bollocks. The gameplay in TDM and evac is fundamentally the same, you're still "shoot everything that moves" the only difference is you are moving from A to B instead of just finding 1 place to camp for the match.
The gameplay in evac etc. COULD be good if it received some polish but it's pretty clear to me that wont happen. Gearbox will shit out their DLC packs (probably faster than they anticipated) then the game will be left to rot and multiplayer will go the same way of AVP2010.

The mp is like nothing I've played. The tracker itself makes it a very immersive, Aliens-like experience, and Survivor mode has a lot of surprises in the levels. You can lock down entire buildings, weld doors, close shutters, etc... and set turrets in certain spots to really barricade yourself. Then you have claymores, proximity mines, motion detectors, and if you run around doing the objectives, you get more points and can end up winning even if the other team "survives" longer. It's not as dynamic as it should be, but it's much closer to giving me that feeling we're all looking for than any Aliens game has come.
Prime, Vakarian, and I had this poor Alien team completely neutered. XD But you can turn around almost any game with good Alien teamwork and coordination. We all proved it on Escape, where I have only seen Alien teams die and die and die. Typical, no teamwork, running right at the player, and little knowledge of how to use the Alien.
This doesn't even cover the many different attacks and abilities you can unlock for each Alien and the strategies/teamwork they create, or the weapons and gadgets you get as a marine. Throw in the customization options for fun and you've got quite an addictive little game. I just put some playing cards and grinning teeth on my helmet. ;)
It definitely needs some balancing, but it's there for me, at least.
QuoteThe mp is like nothing I've played.
Natural Selection or Left 4 Dead would be the biggest inspirations for A:CMs multiplayer. They were released in 2002 and 2008 respectively, unfortunately A:CM gameplay is a step backwards in almost every regard, which is a shame because A:CM with proper l4d mechanics would be amazing.

This doesn't even cover the many different attacks and abilities you can unlock for each Alien and the strategies/teamwork they create, or the weapons and gadgets you get as a marine. Throw in the customization options for fun and you've got quite an addictive little game. I just put some playing cards and grinning teeth on my helmet. ;)
It definitely needs some balancing, but it's there for me, at least.
i agree with you 100%. it makes a change from playing COD or battlefield and is just as much if not more fun. id even buy this game solely for the MP and then you have the added bonus of a single player campaign

Natural Selection 2 needs a lot more love. :'(

S'truth. NS is the Aliens game we should have got, in many respects.

Apparently, from what I've heard while the game is fun it optimized poorly which causes some problems for computers that should be able to handle it.
Here are two vids from today.

I totally agree. Evac and Survivor carry more weight than the entire SP campaign.

Dude, the Alien seriously has a spin-attack? Just watching the Extermination mode video. Spin attack right there. ::)
Spin attack. For Christs sake, how can people be complaining so much and nothing on that? Might be the single most irritating thing I've seen yet.
I don't have a problem with this particular xeno ability, it doesn't look ridiculous when you see it in action imo. Personally the things that bother the most besides the obvious ones like: glitches, no dedicated severs, balance issues; are the Boiler and Crusher. Not to mention those distasteful xeno-head customization options. :-[
When the Alien hits Parker with its tail it could have been a spin attack if that makes you feel any better. :)
