Title: Alien Resurrection on the ps1
Post by: shakermakerman on Mar 19, 2017, 03:31:36 PM
I decided to give this a go again and can't believe how much fun I'm having , absolutely brilliant game if you have never played this it's a must , would love them to bring it out in HD.

I loved this game. Finished it when I bought it on release. I might replay it.

Funnily enough, last week I read a review of the game and there was negative comments regarding the controls. The complaints were aimed at the use of sticks to move and look ( I am pretty sure this was the first game or one of, to use this control scheme). It made me laugh out loud because they said that they were suprised the game got through quality control because it was so hard to control and will likely never be used by another game. Lol

I've just brought a copy now actually. I've never played Resurrection. Played the hell out of and was scared shitless by Trilogy back in the game but we never brought this when I was a kid. Looking forward to giving it a go.  ;D

I loved how all the menus had the same layout that Trilogy did.

This and trilogy remain in my collection to this day along side AvP and AVP 2 for PC.

I remember fighting the controls at the time, but I still liked the game a lot. I've been meaning to replay it with the benefit of hindsight and 10+ years' experience at using dual-stick FPS controls and see how much I enjoy it, haha.

Got bugger all ammo from last save game.  I don't think there's any game that makes you as relieved to reach a save point.

Atmosphere-wise it is the best Alien game ever made. A real proper survival-horror. It was genuinely frightening in its day. The controls are horrible, but it was worth it once mastered.

Another thing I find impressive about this game is from a technical standpoint. It was one of the last PSone games I believe and short of textures not being up to scratch it really played like a next gen title for the time.

You have the new control system which has been adopted universallY for FPS.

The Aliens jump around all over the place. All 3D modelled.

I honestly can't think of a FPS on the PSone that is as advanced as this.

Saying that, I never played many FPS' on that console so I could be way off mark.

No, you're right. It was one of the first that I remember that could use the dual sticks. And the game did push the ps1 to its limit.

go through all the rooms and air ducks, pull levers start with electric room first, last room you get to quarantine area with a hand print pad , there's 2 pulse rifle clips there that should do it 👍

Not just one of, it actually was the first FPS to use dual thumbsticks to control movement and aiming.

Great game.

I remember following this for AGES, ever since it was a third person shooter. It unfortunately lost a lot of momentum by coming out years after the film was released, and did lukewarm sales numbers.

Hard as nails and genuinely dripping with atmosphere. Loved that you could play as multiple characters too.

I would say the ps2 is the best console...... because you can play psone games on it.

I always remember playing the game and then coming across the blue ridge head alien types. I think they were called warriors in the game. I was so suprised and happy to see them.

I rarely have surprises like this nowadays.

I remember those, but there was only two in the whole game IIRC, which was a bit strange considering they were mentioned as an enemy type in the manual. I guess they were an easter egg of sorts for ALIENS fans - still, I expected to come across more of them.

I was skimming through a guide online and I'm pretty sure now you only encounter the blue "soldier" aliens about twice in the game. It fits with my recollection of the game, because I remember it being very rare to see them.

Yes, I also remember seeing them about twice in the whole game and I think that was only in the 7th level, I guess? Some of those underwater ones, anyway.

This game was supposed be similar to the  Resident Evil Style originally. Waited years for this to come out. It was ahead of its time unfortunately and those controls went over peoples heads. Ironically those controls would be popularised by Call of Duty and the like.

Yeah. I think this game came out a bit after analog sticks were becoming the norm, but not many people had them yet. I remember it being a lot easier to control when I played it on PS2 with the analog sticks years later.

I am playing this on the EPSX emulator. It plays rather great, even the mouse works and the video resolution is doubled. I am having trouble with switching weapons, I have to do some manual controller switching to enable the switch key which is a hassle.

All models of the PS3 can natively play PS1 games. Only certain launch models of the PS3 can play PS2 games, though.

It's the first console FPS to use the now-standard dual-stick look/move system that was popularized by Halo.

I actually managed to finish the game on an emulator. It get's easier once you know the weapons, enemies and tricks that the game pulls on you. The number one thing is to conserve ammo and only use the pistol on eggs and facehuggers. Christies dual pistols are awesome but they are only in one level.

Interesting watch, but I think it works better as first person.

Third person definitely doesn't suit this game. I wonder how an android gets face hugged though. Don't remember that in the final game as there was one Call level and the portable surgery pickups I think only show up for Ripley later in the game. Perhaps Call could throw them at NPCs? Also, did getting facehugged twice reset  the countdown? Could be a strategy to keep getting facehugged until the end of the level to get to the finish.

Facehuggers ignore you if you're impregnated. They follow you, but they idle until you kill them or you remove the burster.

Post by: Xeno Killer 2179 on Apr 23, 2021, 08:07:37 AM
In the video at 17:40 they get hugged once, then hugged again in a minute and the countdown reset. I meant if that made it in the final game it could have been a strategy. Also, I was asking because I was not sure if I interpreted the video correctly or had bad memory. I rewatched to confirm.

Might work in 3rd person but the camera positioning's  awkward, looks like it got designed for 1st person then switched to 3rd by console command if I did not know any better, still love seeing stuff about it.

Both also have the same manual save system. I remember in ARES every time I would reach one and it'd be like, "Thank god!" Isolation upped the ante by making you have to wait a bit before saving, which was nerve-racking under pressure.

I would argue that reaching save point in RES game feels as even more of an accomplishment than in Isolation. At least in Isolation it's pretty hard to miss a save point which has obvious glowing green light and pretty distinct sound cue. RES on PS1 was f**king maze of a game
