Anyone got any idea what the ratings were for "Prey" on Hulu? How many new subscribers did the movie attract? How many existing Hulu subscribers turned in to watch the film?
I would like to know as well
It was the most watched on Hulu Canada over the weekend from a post I recall seeing. I'm sure we'll see some numbers soon.

Sounds like it's been doing pretty well!
Please to be taking note of this, Mr. Disney!
Nice!!

Oh, this news rocks. 8) Very well deserved.
Would be nice if Disney/20th started taking note of the success this is having and reconsidering their plans to release Fede Alvarez's Alien movie direct to Hulu.
Places like Variety and The Hollywood Reporter are tweeting about it too, so they've got to have at last noticed that's it's being received extremely well both critically and in terms of viewership numbers.
Outstanding! This is amazing news!
Nice. I think the franchise was reborn now.
That's awesome. I never thought I'd see the day where a Predator film has a 80% audience score on rotten tomatoes and have a the best premiere on a streaming platform. This bodes well for the future of the predator series. Hopefully we can get a series or a sequel out of this! With all of this attention for Prey it's a great day to be a predator fan.

Psssssst Hulu/Disney imagine the extra money you'd get if you released a uncut, superduper hard R, Snyder cut extended 4K steelbook 8)
Great news! Good win for the franchise!
Great news! Absolutely love to see it! It's honestly crazy to see so many people talking about Predator all over the internet.
Glorious! and well deserved!
"Witness the Power of this fully resurrected Franchise! ;D
Couple this with the positive reviews and our sequel is all but assured.
Great news for Predator, Alien, and all "wOkE tRaSh" movies!
Hopefully they bring Dan back, toss whatever money he asks for at him and let him go to work on another great Predator story.

Awesome news!!! Very glad to see all the positive reviews on the film & even more excited for what the future holds with the Predator franchise now! 8)
Prey has been ALL I've seen people talking about so this isn't surprising, but damn if it isn't refreshing and satisfying to see. The Predator relevant again. All those iconic horror franchises making killer coming backs in the cultural zeitgeist and finally Predator is one of them.
Yeah, it's been quite fun seeing people I've not seen or spoken to in years posting about it on social media. My feeds have been a lot of Prey from people in all walks of life, which is just fantastic.
Don't get me wrong, its been great to see Prey get such an overwhelmingly positive response...Alien and Predator franchise has been my favorite for nearly 30 years now... But does anyone else find this reaction kind of...odd?
Its just been weird having been a fan of this underdog, somewhat niche, franchise for this long and to finally have one kind of hit this level of general audience acceptance. People who have never even talked about Predator before, seem to be suddenly falling in love with Predator.
If this is what it takes to get more movies, great. I still can't help but feel a little confused by it all.
The movie was good. But honestly I can't quite figure out why so many people seem to be so taken by it.
It not reinventing the wheel or anything.
Try being a Godzilla fan your whole life, and then Godzilla 98 happens. But then it dies off again for a long time until 2014 and now everyone sees the new Godzilla films and posts about them. The same people who'd tease me when we were kids.
Embrace the new fans, it's good for the franchise.

Right. I remember a time when only me and a couple of friends talked about Godzilla. Such a contrast to seeing the massive universal hype for Godzilla vs. Kong last year.
There's nothing odd about Prey's reception. It quite simply resonated with modern audiences because it's that great of a movie. A lot of people have been talking about how Prey "captures the essence of the original" but I think it's quite the polar opposite. It succeeded because it allowed itself to be free from the original. It respected it but didn't latch itself to it at all, and was able to create its own kinda essence, be special in its own way, and that's the kind of stuff that audiences will get attracted to.
Yep. It's got a lot of Fury Road energy.
I am glad and i am everyone involved in the movie is happy about this, they deserve it. This should have been released on theaters.
Oh and this was better than pretty much 99% of the garbage hollywood puts out in the last years, another reason to see it on the big screen.
I'm really glad to see this doing so well! I had really feared The Predator had killed the franchise, and to see Prey doing so well with the critics and the audience in general, and making waves for the studio stats is music to my ears.
This excellent premiere for "Prey" shows that there is still healthy audience demand for Predator films, provided it is made well. Hopefully it will convince Disney to greenlight a sequel ASAP. Now the question, is there sufficient audience demand for the next Predator sequel to be released in theaters? Or will Hulu be the sole place for new Predator films?
A sequel should be given then. I just hope from the same director and would be happy with both continuing from Prey or going totally elsewhere (Samurai, Vikings, WW1, etc.)

Are you guys planning a "What's next for the franchise/What we'd like to see next for the franchise" podcast?
It's curious to think, if they rehire Dan Trachtenberg, will he want to make a direct sequel to Prey or pick another era of history and do another stand alone movie.
I hope it will be available on DVD or Blu-ray
Enjoying this. More entertaining then Mandolorian and Obi-Wan.
Lol....
<predator victory roar goes here>
If we have a sequel, will Dan return to direct? If so, I don't know if I would like a direct continuation of this story, it would be better to see the Predator in another time, I think it works.
Hi Disney can announce what they want. But the success ( or no success)has nothing to do with them Who created Predator ? Disney. ? NO. absolutely not We don't care about stats , rotten tomatoes, critics , box office ,best first week end , better Hulu bla bla bla etc We don't systematically eat what they put in the plate Think by yourself. You don't need to be brainwashed by Disney to like a movie or not
They are not here for a master piece or quality. See what they did with Star Wars......my best to Jim and John Thomas Regards. We love predator because of you
Free spirit
Movie would be better with androids. Face it, the creature is cooked. We need more artificial intelligence.

I'd imagine that like John Wick ( a guy going around shooting people) , majority of folk just like simple, short action thrillers and those movies will always be well received. As opposed to Thor and his Wife rampaging off to Planet Smash hammer to fight ice Demons for the 5th time.

John Campea talking about "Prey" being the biggest premiere on Hulu ever. He was surprised at how how good "Prey" was given the lack of anticipation and hype leading up to its release (from the general audience I presume). Campea said given the success of "Prey", a sequel should be coming:
Loved this movie! Watched on Disney plus though. Make sure you buy it on bluray when it comes out in October. Don't trust streaming services to have the movie forever. One day it might be impossible to find because of some copyright or streaming merger.
Excellent! Well deserved given how much of a breath of fresh air this film was!
I have my nitpicks but all in all they're minor, not too keen on a sequel just yet though, especially not a direct one. This needs to breathe, and we need to enjoy this unique double whammy, well made and well received at last :)

For the first question, it definitely adds to what drew me to the franchise. I got into it via Predator 2 and AVP, and ever since I've longed to see a proper modern depiction of the Predator, a hunt as compelling for a brand new story and the franchise under a true vision of top-notch modern filmmaking. This movie finally gave me that.
For the second question, and I can only answer that for myself, but no, it isn't an overreaction because I, particularly, don't dislike any of the Predator movies, including the last one. I have different issues with each of the sequels, each one of them only partially got what my ideal Predator follow-up and a modern Predator movie should be, but none of them got the whole of it. This one did. So even for me, who likes the other Predator sequels, Prey delivered on much, much higher level.

Fingers crossed the viewership and critical success does lead to another film. They'd be crazy not to. Prey restored the franchise's honour. But I'm ready for something different next time, rather than mirroring the original film's template closely.

Just like... every single Alien film.
I'm starting to see why people leave/avoid this place.
Quote from: BlueMarsalis79 on Aug 14, 2022, 01:54:06 AMJust like... every single Alien film.
Alien films aren't about almost all the male cast being sexist all the time while ripley continuously screams about being ignored.
Those films have proper writing and do characters right. Even AVP did it way better.
You have to be joking lmao
AVP's trash.
If everyone listened to Ripley and did not let Kane onboard most of the crew of the Nostromo might have actually lived, but she's not listened to and ultimately undermined, same goes for Aliens and Alien³ roughly speaking for their first half until authority's turned over to her.
Sure Naru's receives a snipe about her gender from one particular character the once, but the rest's not got much to do with that facet of her person, proving she can hunt to survive has not a lot to do with her gender ultimately, just that people think she's good at other things like medicine and tracking and should give up on this but she's proving them incorrect.
ok so thats also something that appeals to the fans. a female lead.
just a remark. in predator dutch was never really in control. the predator was picking them off one by one. toying with them. same in p2.
feral however just never seems completely to be in control in the same way.
but the movie s appeal might be in a very simple story well told about a simple people encountering something totally unknown to them. it is just a very beautifully made movie.
but p1 and p2 was about a creature and his race who never needed anything from us and was here to hunt for sport. trophy hunting. but this feels like he just kills because he can.
Quote from: BlueMarsalis79 on Aug 14, 2022, 02:26:44 AMIf everyone listened to Ripley and did not let Kane onboard most of the crew of the Nostromo might have actually lived, but she's not listened to and ultimately undermined, same goes for Aliens and Alien³ roughly speaking for their first half until authority's turned over to her.
To play devil's advocate, was she not listened to because she was a woman ? Dallas and Lambert were concerned for Kane and wanted to get him on board ASAP. Company's board meeting thought she was insane and hold a grudge against her blowing that pricey ship. Andrews was irritated with her since the beginning because he had to deal with prisoners getting bonners from the sight of her
Alien 3 is the only time Ripley is told what she can and can't do based on her sex, and it's because she's surrounded by literal rapists, not "girls can't do X".
She's never ignored or minimised because she's a woman; she's ignored or minimised because she's an officious hardarse, too by the book, or deemed crazy. But never "lol women amirite?"

Quote from: BigDaddyJohn on Aug 14, 2022, 09:51:39 AMI didn't get much of the "girl power" vibe from Prey honestly.
Because it doesn't exist in the movie. Not once in the movie is Naru told "no, woman can't do that." Not once is she told her place is here or there because of her gender. The "because you think I can't" is reasonably ambiguous enough, but the only time the movie really gets specific is when her mother tells Naru her medical skills are more important.

Not once yet you provide one example,sooo.... one.
When she catches up to the search party one dude says that they don't need a cook. When they get to the den she says they should lay a trap and the other guy there says if you doesn't want to hunt she should head back to the camp where she belongs.
Then there's her weird response to things. Raphael is trying to convince her to get info by saying the pred killed YOUR whole party and her reply is that it didn't kill her whole party. How dare you ignore her existence. I think it's clear what YOUR means yet she gives this weird reply.
And then there's that weird speech she gives the dude she cut the leg off. Where she says the reason she got to him was because he didn't see her as a hunter. Meaning, because she's a woman. And she also put that on the predator. And as we all know, the pred doesn't care who you are as long as you have a weapon and declares you a target.
Like I said, the movie has all this sexist stuff from guys on top of her complaining about not being seen because she's a woman.
Now we are going off-topic from the thread but I had to reply because this movie is on a streaming service, it's not hard to go back and check to see what happened.
Very true, she was also the fish cook. But again, no-one mentioned her being a woman. Just her roles within the tribe - medicine and cooking.
Quote from: Corporal Hicks on Aug 14, 2022, 08:18:05 PMVery true, she was also the fish cook. But again, no-one mentioned her being a woman. Just her roles within the tribe - medicine and cooking.
To be fair, she had those roles because... she's a woman. That cause not being made the focal point doesn't mean it's not there, just that it was handled well.
Quote from: DaddyYautja on Aug 14, 2022, 02:18:06 AMAVP did it way better.
Lmao
1. Yes the cook thing's that one instance of sexism we have mentioned already before, the other's no different than other people's remarks, Naru's gender's part of the existence Naru experiences but the idea it is the focal point's just incorrect.
Cooking's also not something attributed purely because of Naru's gender, as just an assumption, but something we actually see happen irrespective of that context.
Just like the medicine, or tracking, or fighting.
2. Not the whole party's refering to Taabe not Naru obviously, she's smug when saying that but then loses that in shock when she sees they have him captured.
3. It is because the leader of the fur trappers simply underestimated Naru, just like when he saw her as an animal to be prodded when in the cage, and underestimated the ferocity of a Comanche Warrior even then. I think that has honestly more to do with underestimating native peoples than gender.

It is coming out on blu ray?
I second that question. I've not heard anything about it being released in October. Details please?

Just took a quick look through that site. Totally not a solid source of information. They still have stuff up about Sherlock Holmes 3, and other things which don't exist. Sorry.
It will get a release though. I see no reason not to, when Legion FX also on Hulu Season 1 did.
Quote from: BigDaddyJohn on Aug 14, 2022, 09:51:39 AMI didn't get much of the "girl power" vibe from Prey honestly.
Neither.

I don't understand why there is still debate over a female lead action movie. I grew up with alien(s) I never questioned Ripley's ability as the monster ass kicker.
I also grew up on 70s/80s martial arts movies and women kick tremendous ass in these films.
Masculinity so fragile you could break it with a sneeze.

If that release date is correct though, then you'll owe me a beer.

Haha! That sounds like a good wager!
Just what the franchise needed!
Well deserved.
Understand the conservative approach in regards to the marketing decision to send this to streaming - hindsight though is a wonderful thing and you wonder how well this might've done at the box-office. The positive on this is I'm hoping this speeds up the physical media release as I'm sure sales will be very healthy.
Honestly it could've tanked if they sent it to theatre. Streaming likely helped it in the current environment.
Depends upon the timing, I have seen most say this would have done gangbusters and was a massive missed opportunity. Might not be accurate, but it is what I hear.
I want to know whether "Prey" success will translate into the next Predator sequel getting streaming or theater release?
I'm so glad Prey is doing well! I had genuinely thought The Predator had killed the franchise off for the foreseeable future, but Prey has really reinvigorated the general public response, and for the most part, the fandom response too. I know it's easy to see a lot of the negativity and think it's the major reaction, but you can see from all the polls and the aggregators how well this film has gone over with the vast majority. And I hope the people who didn't enjoy the film can appreciate what it's done to keep the series relevant and within a positive spotlight.
Amen

Well said Aaron.
Yeah the movie was great and very artistic! Loved it.
It's a good movie and I'm happy it found its audience.
The irony is that debuting on a streamer probably saved the franchise. I doubt many people would pay to watch it in a theatre after both Predators and The Predator disappointing.
I hope Alvarez's Alien movie is as good and enjoys similar success.
I feel a lot of those hours are people watching/rewatching the film who couldn't have if it was in theatres. Especially the "rewatching" part. Definitely helped it solidify its audience.

I think this also helped with some unclear parts. Like I loved it on first view, but I definitely had some questions about the ending ......which I watched straight after it finished.
I rewatched it 2 times I the week of release which wouldn't happen normally.
Plus the high quality stream meant no piracy.
Just wondering if the numbers here also include Disney+ in their total.

Ha, well I think most people probably rock Disney + anyway. Piracy will always be a thing, but I think there's way less chance of people ripping movies if it's straight on a stream.
When there were one or two streaming services, yes. Today the market is oversaturated and piracy is back on the rise.
There are rumblings of it being released in November. But, let's not forget, these are purely rumours. I reckon it would sell well, though.

Where is the source of the rumblings coming from? Because the only site I've been to that mentions a November is the Dvd Release site, and they are highly unreliable and do a lot of speculating.
That's where it all originated from. I wouldn't put stock in the date.
