I believe xeno alpha 07 is working on a full Assembly, Workprint, Theatrical comparison which should be a good read once it's done.

Yeppers, I made a start a while ago.  I'm working on it little by little when I get the free time.  I'm adding video clips and dialogue transcripts which also take time.

Any idea on when that might be completed?

Not sure yet.

This page talks about some of the cut stuff, although I can't vouch for where they got the info from.

And xeno alpha 07's stuff is pretty thoroughly researched.  I can't imagine he'd post anything he couldn't back up.

Main source of info comes from various magazines, books, scripts, interviews, behind the scenes material, documentaries, fans, etc.  As well as from this very forum, (including you SM & SiL) and other forums over the years.

That's good to know, there's some really informative stuff on that site.

I reckon a lot of the Newt autopsy stuff would've just been coverage, so they had plenty of footage to edit from.

Quote from: FiorinaFury161 on Jun 10, 2013, 07:19:08 PMI heard the uncut edition was turned down by FOX execs because it was extremely gory; is there a extended scene where Clemens and Ripley doing the autopsy on Newt had multiple camera angles showing the entire autopsy in all aspects? I also read that the deaths of the prisoners is much more detailed and shown all the way thru. Any help/info would be appreciated!

The film apparently was cut for violence, but as SM said none of that footage is in the workprint. You're right in saying Newt's autopsy was originally a lot more graphic. Murphy's death in the vent shaft was apparently cut quite a bit too, there was originally a prosthetic piece made showing his face melting from the Alien's acid spit. This page talks about some of the cut stuff, although I can't vouch for where they got the info from.

As above, taking out the reel breaks, 2 hours, 2 minutes, 15 seconds (without closing titles).

The workprint is the mid way point between Assembly and Theatrical.  The Assembly is simply an assembly of everything they shot (in theory).  Hence the reason it drags and is often redundant.

Any idea on when that might be completed? I'll have to contact him about getting a blu-ray copy of the workprint. Depending on how its edited and such. If its seamless its worth it. What would the running time be on the workprint?

Why don't they make a full workprint version longer than the assembly cut. The assembly cut made Alien 3 five times better than my experience watching the theatrical cut. I didn't read SM's real LONG ass post but i'm assuming there's more to the film than even the assembly cut has to offer. I know there's at LEAST 35 minutes of the film that was never put into the assembly cut. David Giler mentioned in the making of Alien 3 how they showed him over a 3 hour cut of the film before it was even edited down. I'm sure there's more to it than the assembly cut mentions. I believe in all honesty they need to just put all the scenes in the film, transfer it all to blu-ray and edit it all out so it flows nicely. Its the least they could do considering how much Fincher was f**ked by the studio. The assembly cut does some justice for that.

Ah, you know I was only makin' fun.

While I'm being pedantic about the spelling of Alec Gillis, I may as well point out that it's Tom who gets in the suits, not Alec.  ;)

I just re-read SM's original post of all the details, thank you again for all the info! I would still like to see what an original copy looks like...

It's much tighter than the Assembly.  The ideal version of the film would sit somewhere between the workprint and the theatrical.  The WP hasn't cut enough stuff and the TC has cut a bit too much.

How do you like it compared to the theatrical and assembly?
