I'm currently learning how to use MAYA (3D software used for motion pictures & animated movies) with Zbrush (sculpt software). Expect some more digital art for this summer.

I'll try to make some drawing too and maybe get back to the roots: Alien & Predator.

Thank you! That's definitely a reward for me:
My aim with Vue was to get as close as possible with Photorealism.
Of course it ain't look real photography due to my old computer.
I had to cut some effect as a good HDRI for lighting.
Still some images took more than 8 hours to render (especially Pandora like... 5 000 000 000 polygons).

Next Project:

In the 20th Century, mankind encountered something that was destined to be hidden.
What the expedition found there is above imagination... above the clouds.
We are early in the 20th century, Antarctica and what they discovered is insane and brought madness to the people who managed to get back.

Everest is no more the tallest mountain of the planet since this day.  :-X

I love those landscapes. I truly do. You've got some talent there.
My favourite is the fifth one. So much potential in it!
And your next project sounds rather like... my cup of tea.
Continue.

Thank you, I feel glad that you like some of those landscapes.
Here is a new one for H.P. Lovecraft fan:

At The Mountains Of Madness
(https://www.avpgalaxy.net/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg51.imageshack.us%2Fimg51%2F1232%2Fmountainmadnessfinalwin.png&hash=dc98edcee8da11359ce2eceb9a833a16d086feb8)

This is a WIP, I've cut the bottom because there were problems with the caverns beneath the ice.
Also, I'll post a clear version (without tempest) so you can actually see the real insane size of the mounts.

Maaaaaaan.
f**king love it. Beautiful work. Hell, it looks almost real; The snow is so defined and almost tangible. The clouds are fantastic.

but will we go past the Mountains of Madness?

Those images you put together look great, Vue seems like a pretty neat program, how long did it take you to learn how to do those landscapes? Also, what version of the program are you using?

Indeed, vue is very powerful, many Visual Effects companies use it.
I've started doing landscapes with it about one or two months ago.
It's easy to use, there are plenty of tutorials existing around the web.

I've been a bit busy with my final exams but here is another Vue scene:
(https://www.avpgalaxy.net/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg35.imageshack.us%2Fimg35%2F8236%2Fcanyonphotorealisticatt.png&hash=243ad16df576057f539f60aaed58b00ea21f1c33)

I guess I'm getting very close to the photorealism.
Next phase is to do a Motion Animation, but I'll need another computer to render the scene.
I'll start also in July to works with Maya and MudBox (a software close to Zbrush).
Maybe I can manage to do some sample animations featuring an Alien or a Predator at the end of the summer  :D

Post by: Le Celticant on Jun 06, 2011, 07:17:27 PM
Thank you but I still think it needs a load of work to get to photorealism.
Anyway, I hardly believe this can be achieved with Vue only, that's why I'm learning Maya.
The render soft that comes with 'Mental Ray' is very good to achieve photorealism scene.
I'm thinking also to take a look at 'Vray' which is another third party soft for rendering.

It will be great to see some of your work when it has some of your own assests rather than the predefined ones that come with vue, will definitely make it look less generic, good work, can't wait to see your Maya stuff.
Title: Re: LC - CGI Stuff
Post by: Le Celticant on Jun 06, 2011, 09:00:42 PM
Some of my works have... my own assets.
The last picture actually has:
-Own material, greatly inspired and mimic (in purpose to train with material to strata) the canyon material. Colours, Alpha production & Bump map are my own even if those are reproducing the original material (I just wanted to be sure I could fit a strata texture well to a terrain).
-Water was an original water asset included in which I modified a lot playing with translucent parameters, glows, reflections, colour production.
-Light is 100% achieved by me also using a Global radiosity to get an HDRI alpha look rather than a direct sunlight set with the standard mod. No asset used simply because there are no asset for lighting.

Clouds... were untouched and does not really need to be touched.

Remember, I'm still learning the software, I'm not a 1 year pro user, just a dude who started to have a look to the software for some future project and did experiment.  ;)

New scene with a mesh made with Maya (pretty basic):

Render time: 4h55
Polygons: 46 971 211 590 (Probably the most complex scene I've done  :P )

You're right but I couldn't get to my initial aim.
I wanted to do a UW map to apply exactly where I wanted the material.
Unfortunately I learnt that UW map aren't that easy and I couldn't afford much time on it.

I then tweaked my mind and decided to add some... 'building' we can say.
I'm not disappointed with the overall look, my only problem would be the angle of the textures and the shadows cast (too rectangular but that is because there aren't enough polygons to smooth the thing and add more would have been madness with the already 40 000 trillions of polygons  ;D).

The problem you mention can also be from the resolution (1600*900) which ain't enough to catch all the details.
I would have love to do a 1080p version... hell even a 4K version as the cinema resolution but my computer is just a old racing horse who hardly breath with all the things I'm making it do **No, no I'm not an evil guy with my comp, absolutely not, I just tell him to focus at 95% on render for 5 hour while I keep 2.5% for reading things on the internet that he probably don't care about and I'm making him play with the other 2.5% crappy music via Itunes mouahahahahahahahahahahah**

But I definitely agree there's something wrong with it.
Maybe it looks 'too net' for a ship that just crashed.  ;) Oh well, I'm not so disappointed, but it can definitely gets better BUT I'm a bit lazy to redo a 5 hours render  :P

Yeah rendering can suck a butt.

I used to mess around a bit in lightwave and 3ds years ago, rendering saps all the fun out of it, and the output always seems a little too generic.

What kinda pc are you using for rendering?
Title: Re: LC - CGI Stuff
Post by: Le Celticant on Jun 07, 2011, 09:43:50 PM
Well, it's an old machine.
2 core 2.5 ghz (E5200), 3.25go ram (32bit s*cks) with a NVIDIA 9800 GT pro.

I'm aiming at a Six core i7 xeon 2.66 Ghz computer with a dual NVIDIA Quadro 600 for this summer.
I'm also saving money to buy a render BOXX (from boxx technology).
Configurations: Dual i7 Xeon 6 Core (so 24 threads), 24go ram with a primary storage of 500go.
It should be pretty smooth and I think I could even manage to do some 720p animations.

I've in mind since a long ago an animation movie (Alien & Predator) that I want to do.
Hopefully, this will live a day.  ;)

By the way, what would you say about 3DS Max?
I've heard some good things about its particles as FumeFX or Phoenix plugin but I've heard people saying that Maya is the real deal for creating models.
Title: Re: LC - CGI Stuff
Post by: Pn2501 on Jun 07, 2011, 11:52:54 PM
More experienced in lightwave,as that's what I used at school, I mucked around in 3ds years ago when I was a kid so I have no idea about the current iteration.

That render box sounds nice, yeah Maya's the industry standard, I've never used it, how do you find it?
Title: Re: LC - CGI Stuff
Post by: Le Celticant on Jun 08, 2011, 12:01:44 AM
Honestly, It's a pretty cool software.
Usually with 3D software, it takes years to master how to create models.
Doesn't seems the case of Maya which is very easy to use (at least I had no troubles with the basics which sometimes can be a bit frustrated as Blender or milkshape. Never liked those software, never will).
The hard stuff is more about the animations, particles and FX but this is a more advanced stuff. I must not skip steps.

I still have much to learn!

Rough useless concept in "preview" definition (so expect some crappy quality with anti aliasing)

The model of the Sulaco were not made by me.
And yeah, there is something wrong with the water  ;D

I should get my new computer more adapt for the stuff I'm doing in a few weeks.
So I'll probably work on something more exciting and personal with VUE including 3D objects as facilities & stuff.

Thank you Effectz!
I've bought some book today to learn about 3D modeling.
I have a project in mind that will be perfect to post in the "Post your Space Porn" thread HAHA
Should be out sometime this christmas or later in 2012 if I get to control most stuff I need to use for it with Maya 2011 and the latest version of Vue.
Title: Re: LC - CGI Stuff
Post by: Le Celticant on Nov 28, 2011, 10:36:50 PM
Hello,

I've started learning Maya (3D) a day ago and bought a book and watched several tutorial online.
Nothing really relevant here, I just set up the "basic" of an animation with Vue and here is a small "one frame" preview.

(https://www.avpgalaxy.net/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg259.imageshack.us%2Fimg259%2F7542%2Fmountainanim.png&hash=ab3f342138dd8c44d515bd1ddf34ca849b08b53b)

It needs a load of work and I still don't get everything about this new version of Vue 9.5
The interface is for sure more "design & good looking" but the parameters are a pain in the ass and I feels like nothing obey me since they've changed a load of things with the nodes.
So yeah, the snow & rock feels a bit weak but I'll play with it to get an accurate look for the final animation leading to a short.

By the way, some keyword for the short:
Atlantis Space Shuttle
ISS Space Station
Hubble
Nebula
Black Hole
Giant Gas
Planet collision

:D

Starting from this day I'll do at least "One scene" per day just to train with it and exploit as much as possible Vue
before I dig Maya.

Hello,

I've unleashed my computer capabilities to render and here we go with
two animations made with Vue:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PMKHlcp-WJc#ws (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PMKHlcp-WJc#ws)

I've also played with particles (Both Maya and AE) to create a Galaxy
& a Nebula, I'll post them later on the forum.

Note: The animations are purely experimental to learn how to create
realistic animations for a future short film. I hope you like them.  ;)

What 3D related programs did you use before Vue?

Thank you,
Haha Vue can easily cheat your eyes!
E-ON softwares made a great VFX tools
and many movies including LOTR & AVATAR
used it. The quality is astonishing yet I am
having some troubles as you can see with the
sky and some flat area where pixels "blend"
and it creates this sort of weird aura thing.

Before Vue hmm...
I think my first 3D software was 3Ds max.
I made a small space ship.
Very primitive and bad looking but I was proud
to do it at the age of 10 - 12 if I'm correct.
Then I moved to DEdit ( My first <3 ) where I
did map for AVP2 between 2001 to 2008.
I was expecting a SDK for AVP 2010 but SEGA...

Now I'm cool with Maya, trying to learn it, it's complicated
but it has all the power to do whatever you want.

I've also made some maps with the UDK / Unity / WEdit / The ogre engine
And before Vue as a terrain generator I used Terragen 2.0
Problem with terragen was you had to do 1000000 things while with vue
You can compile everything into 1.
It's much faster to work with and VFX = Time = Money, sadly.
But both can achieve the same thing, it's a matter of taste & color.

Nnng so good.

Thank you OmegaZilla!!

Here as promised are the two other renders I have done today:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t642T8nZl9g#ws (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t642T8nZl9g#ws)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OV4cM_fxeIE#ws (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OV4cM_fxeIE#ws)

I am satisfied with the look of the Galaxy.
But, I do not like how the nebula looks (3 hours to render and meh... f*ck)
I'll improve everything and the next time you'll see this is in a short film
entirely made of VFX called "Space & Time: Beauty of the Empty"

By the way, I was at a conference about George Méliès today
(the guy who invented Special & Visual FX when the cinema
was born).
Got the chance to look for the first time to some lost archives and
I have to say, even if the films are old of a century, it is still astonishing
how the guy used a camera to make you believes things.
He was a genius, one of the Father of the cinema, RIP.

The only scene in the trailer from Prometheus that inspired me.

Hello,

A new version improved (accuracy) with the nostromo this time.

Nostromo model by James Medcalf textured by me.

Oh so amazingly good. The engines textures is dead-on accurate to the Nostromo explorer ship, too! Whoa.

Outstanding material, indeed. Congrats. man! ;)

On the Nebula - After effects one: Would be a good idea make a version of it in order to make it look like as you're watching the impressive scene from the inside of a predator spaceship?. You could crop a frame of the movie for it.. just an indea though! :)

Thank you everyone!

@OmegaZilla
The Nostromo model is in indeed very very close to the original.
I had an heart attack when I opened it in Vue!!!  ;D

@The_Silencer
I don't plan to do anything with the nebula.
It was done as an experimental work to "test" how I could
achieve such space effect.
But of course this will be use in future work  ;)

Hello,

While setting up my future website I got the idea to give
for free ultra wide panoramic scene to use as matte painting
for everyone doing VFX.
Here is a preview:
(https://www.avpgalaxy.net/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg850.imageshack.us%2Fimg850%2F9323%2Fmattemountainday.jpg&hash=ffb325a617450ab02f6e2fd5e4ea3f644ab9cd10)
Put it to High Res to see all the details.

Here is an example of work done quickly (so not perfect at all):
(https://www.avpgalaxy.net/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg513.imageshack.us%2Fimg513%2F8766%2Fmatteexample.jpg&hash=196a1e440faee7f1a17378d68679832fcedf5208)

Composed from the matte and those 2 images:
(https://www.avpgalaxy.net/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.freakingnews.com%2Fpictures%2F31500%2FGreen-Screen-31940.jpg&hash=debfa9e23931875746658ad353ef00f561e9c4c5)
(https://www.avpgalaxy.net/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.turbophoto.com%2FFree-Stock-Images%2FImages%2FSnow%2520Hill.jpg&hash=f973e2d92789cfba758a374af4c0e66b500f4868)

I added some snow / smoke trail too.
Title: Re: LC - CGI Stuff
Post by: OmegaZilla on Dec 29, 2011, 05:49:45 PM
The matte looks practically photoreal... it seems like I'm looking at an actual mountain formation. Brilliant.

Great compositing as well, the trail is great. The only defect I reckon is that you can see some evident pixels on the snowboarder's hat.
Title: Re: LC - CGI Stuff
Post by: Le Celticant on Dec 31, 2011, 02:44:45 AM
@OmegaZilla:
Thank you!
I do also blame the quality of the snowboard guy, pixels pixels...
I'll do something more convincing with this matte in the future
(in motion for the pleasure of your eyes!)

I've completed a short I was working on.
(Several weeks of work)
to finally present it to you:
http://www.festivalnikon.fr/videos/view/id/1134 (http://www.festivalnikon.fr/videos/view/id/1134)

Don't hesitate to vote for it if you can, the entry
is for a film festival purpose and the winner will
have his short film projected into all the MK2 cinemas
in Paris (kinda a big thing).

Superb! The only small problem I could find with it is the evident 'passage' from one stage of the "Stargate" to the other. Otherwise excellent.
Title: Re: LC - CGI Stuff

@OmegaZilla:
Yup the transition is a bit weird.
Gotta change this if I want to include in any future
project.

So, I've finally dig a bit Maya and its power.
Following a tutorial, I've made this:
(https://www.avpgalaxy.net/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg696.imageshack.us%2Fimg696%2F9716%2Fearthmaya.jpg&hash=7198b34d26f67c301d2d010d9bcabe0ee92ff806)
I hope to learn soon about Diffusion & Bump map
so I can create an ultra realistic earth map.

I've also take a look at 3DS Max & FumeFX.
The purpose of this plugin is to make fluid / smoke
by using particles.
Right, now, I'm thinking to learn it and compile a scene:
Earth from space (Maya)
Earth from ground (Vue)
Asteroid crashing on Earth (FumeFX + AE compositing).

Should be quite impressive if I manage to do it  :D
Not before a couple of weeks anyway.

Hello,

Here is the render of an animation I've done with MAYA:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f-0TqEfu5hA#ws (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f-0TqEfu5hA#ws)
I also started to learn Modeling.
Hopefully, I'll get something out with Maya soon.  :D

Nature done with Vue 9.5

For a first attempt to model with Maya I kinda like it.
I mean, it wasn't like I was going to do Optimus Prime for a start  ;D

Hello,

Thanks, I appreciate!
And no one is ever late on this thread ;)

I've recently tried to work on my earth and it is
getting closer step by step to a realistic earth.
Here is the current result:
(https://www.avpgalaxy.net/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg825.imageshack.us%2Fimg825%2F6240%2Fearthfromspaced.jpg&hash=02aedb5152c52edc7bcdd192a821bf461feb62a1)

I've also uploaded the short "Visionary" in HD version
so if you haven't seen it or want to see it:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rLUbejXX5YQ#ws (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rLUbejXX5YQ#ws)
It is an "experimental" short based on symbolism so don't
expect some story or characters.

have some free time.

(There is a glitch sound, lighting problem with the mountain
shot and a couples of things to fix like the Aspect Ratio.
The final version will also have more stuff with real
footage and not only 100% CGI so I can show my
compositing skill).
Kinda a mix of everything I've posted with... some extra.

Hello,

Just to keep you in touch, I won't post a lot before April I think.
I'll probably just upload my Demo Reel this time complete in the
beginning of March and some conceptual art but that's pretty
much about it.
The reason is, I'm doing the "YourFilmFestival" launched by YouTube
( http://www.youtube.com/yourfilmfestival (http://www.youtube.com/yourfilmfestival) ) sponsored by Ridley Scott.

I can't tell you much at this point apart it's going to be Science Fiction,
Huge use of CGI and it's on Mars with the current government being
threatened by the earth government.
Spy story...

If anyone is doing 3D and would like to join the project, you're welcome!

with the city at the edges and the Mt. Olympus in the background.  :D

The script is finished.
The CGI stuff has started.
The actors have been cast.
Budget established.
Awaiting answer for locations and then, We'll shoot.

Plot:
Tired of living in a civilization that is supposed to be in the 22th century with religions, war, poverty, Many people left Earth with hope to have a better life on Mars. But Earth don't see it this way and send spies to understand what is doing the Mars government and they'll soon discover the dark corner of the story.

Hopefully, everything will be done in a month so we can present it to the YouTube Film Festival of Venice.

It has been a while since I posted last time.
Just to give a very very very very very small update about where I am now.
I've completed all the docs for the school I'll be next year ( http://www.isartdigital.com/ (http://www.isartdigital.com/) if anyone who can read french want to take a look but if you just want to see the works done go directly there: http://www.isartdigital.com/gallery/animation-3D/studies (http://www.isartdigital.com/gallery/animation-3D/studies) )

I've updated with a couple of render my Deviantart if you want to take a look at it (sorry I did not post here, I was a bit lazy after spending hours and hours in front of the computer HAHA  :D )
http://ctheesrevinu.deviantart.com/ (http://ctheesrevinu.deviantart.com/)

/!\ WIP /!\

I've also dig Autodesk MAYA a lot this past months so I'm able to start modeling what I want.
I'm pretty sure this one that I abandoned a week ago due to a vertex glitch will please OmegaZilla:

There are still some problems with the proportions but I can't continue further until I've fixed the Vertex glitch.

Also here is something special I always wanted to model because this can be so useful in any nature / landscape scene to place:

Hey,

Thank you very much!
I would love to have several Derelict shots!
The one I can find on Google only show the same perspective and that was very very very hard to get it to what I think it should be by my own.
I remember a top view artwork from the derelict, not sure if it was fan or Giger but if anyone has it, it would be kickass because that's about a week I'm searching for it and I can't find it anymore  :-[

Ok so a few progress at last:
(https://www.avpgalaxy.net/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg560.imageshack.us%2Fimg560%2F5120%2Fderelict.png&hash=0515c48f4eb6a75c8cee0090e0c337ba02f89c73)
I think that the main shape is ready to be send to ZBrush/Mudbox to start doing the "details" such as the tubes and wire stuff bio-mechanic mix.
I'm happy about the overall shape and great thanks to OmegaZilla who contributed with concepts art of the film!
Concerning the T-Rex unfortunately, I haven't found solution to fix this Vertex problem.  :-[

I've also made some random (well not random actually, it's full of symbolism  :P ) "experimental CGI" for a short movie named Spectrum (RGB), here is a frame:
(https://www.avpgalaxy.net/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg208.imageshack.us%2Fimg208%2F5048%2Fspectrum01.png&hash=f9f012d090e161220d3496f523431b597cc31397)

I'm also experimenting a lot with Matte Painting and Image Projection.

Concerning now the previous short film (Inverted Universe) that was doing well, it has been canceled.
I was filming and notices some problems so I put it on hold.
Here are maybe things that could interest you (those are abandoned things but I still keep them in case I need to recycle a day):

Hey,

I've put on hold the derelict a bit until I get my hands on ZBrush (couldn't handle Mudbox very well).
But I haven't stop doing things, here is my latest animation, very... spaceish:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=us_IX1URcY4#ws (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=us_IX1URcY4#ws)

3 hours of work on Vue.
13 hours to render.
3 hours of work in post-process (After Effects).

There are a few problems I'm trying to fix, this is why I'm rendering again a better quality.
Hopefully the flickering will be gone with the anti-aliasing boost and so does this tesselation problem where some part of the landscape seems to "morph".
But I'm overall happy of the result.

Thank you!

Here is an experimental short film I've just finished.
It's based on Knowledge, Conscious & Belief through the golden number Phi.

Hey,

Back from vacations, did a lot of video shooting and commercials also.
Here is the famous thing known as UFO through Giger's Vision:
(https://www.avpgalaxy.net/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg846.imageshack.us%2Fimg846%2F8458%2Fufotest.png&hash=46e379bff9d382d8339d3d610b672254dcddd6d9)

Still WIP, but I like the look of it.
I may use it in an animation soon.

Yes, it is!
It doesn't looks that good because it ain't animated yet.
I'm planning to do an animation with it.

Ah. I've always pictured the thing flying without any visible boosters.
Marvelous render though.
Title: Re: LC - CGI Stuff
Post by: Le Celticant on Sep 23, 2012, 06:44:51 PM
I personally hardly conceive anything flying without boosters.
Unless it is fantasy  ;D

Anyway, nothing will really remain in the final render which will be much more complex and beautiful (I guess).
It was just a test to see if the bridge between Maya, World Machine & Vue is stable and if they can handle well the polygons amount.

Hey,

It appeared for the Derelict animation render that the render time was... a number... several zeros and... the unit was in weeks so you may understand that I've put this on hold  ;D

To be forgiven, here is another nebula attempt (I guess I'm doing better and better since I'm in a VFX school now)

An exercise I have to do for school concerning greenscreen:

(https://www.avpgalaxy.net/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg197.imageshack.us%2Fimg197%2F1918%2Fkeyingisart.png&hash=1eb491af9e943e1da8863433251501201e59a7ec)

The keying is not finished though, this is why there are on the character some soft white edges.
I alos have to re-work the Color correction a bit.

Will upload the full video later this week.

Is there a way to soften the edges of the human figure? It's a nice series of visuals, but still looks separate to the background pictures.

Hey,

I did have fun indeed to add a couple of things like USCM and Weyland Yutani logo  :D
Here is an update:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zx7Wq6U6oVs#ws (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zx7Wq6U6oVs#ws)

I do believe that the problem isn't from the edges (which are soften, more than the original shot in fact) but rather from the Color Matching.
I did some modifications and tried to give it a proper look.
There's still some work to do on it but I'm getting close to the final comp.

The Helix Nebula
https://www.instagram.com/p/BApIlenAAZO/?taken-by=geoffreyomega (https://www.instagram.com/p/BApIlenAAZO/?taken-by=geoffreyomega)

I decided this time to go full 3D.
Render time has been up for 3 weeks now (I suspect 4K being one of the reason :D )

If everything goes according as planned, it should come out February the 7th.
Meanwhile, enjoy this little preview of the nebula known as "The Eye of Sauron".

Upcoming video is still coming some days but I had to make a pause because I was doing a short film for a special event.
Here is the result of the short film:

Made within 6 days (writing, shooting, editing and VFX + sound mix).
Kinda proud of the result.
2 shots of the Helix nebula made it out there.

The full nebula is coming alive sometime next week.

Ciao!

bit of updated, not computer generated image but music this time, I did a small EP inspired greatly by the Alien quadrilogy.
It all started with my fellow friend windebieste who needed a piece for his upcoming "Hideous Plastic" book
(Check out the website here: http://www.hideousplastic.com/ )
After completing the first track for the project I felt like continuing on composing a few more pieces.

What does that mean you probably ask, well my work is better explained in images than words:
