Title: Questions for Scott, Fassbender, Waterston, McBride or Bichir?
Post by: Corporal Hicks on Apr 11, 2017, 05:09:36 PM
So I'm going to be getting the opportunity to speak to Ridley Scott, Michael Fassbender, Katherine Waterston, Danny McBride and Demian Bichir shortly after the premiere of Alien: Covenant!

I've already got some questions written up and I wont get too long with everyone but as usual, I wanted to give you all the chance to put across any questions you had. I'll try and pick at least one member submitted question for each person.

So fire away!

Shit! You truly are now the f*ckest upest (apologies to Gazz) Corporal.

I'll think of some pertinent questions relating to Covenant, but see if you can clear up the "box alien" myth with Riddles while you're at it. Apparently he still remembers everything on Alien as if it were yesterday.

Wow :o, that's insane, I don't know how you'll contain yourself heh. I guess a question for Sir Ridley, of course - Will the derelict and its pilot be explained?

This is great!

Maybe you could ask Scott about the future of the Alien franchise, and what Alien: Awakening really is.

Wow that is so cool and well deserved for all your hard work Hicks!

Perhaps you could ask Ridley to elaborate about this new rule book for the Alien Universe?  I guess you're already planning to ask about Awakening too?.  :)

Well done, Corporal! I hope you have a great time.

I have a question for Sir Ridley Scott. Will we ever see humanity meet their sibling species? As in other Engineer creations in future films?

I know McBride is supposed to be a serious genre buff, so I guess I'm curious what his favorite things are about each Alien film (uh, where/if applicable).

I spotted him at a movie in town a month ago and barely restrained myself from begging him for info about his new Halloween project...

I guess I second Evanus' question: What exactly is Alien: Awakening and what will it focus on?

Ask Scott if Alien Awakening is a prequel will it tell the story of Shaw, and David before the events of Covvie.

I am 99% sure that is a misprint by press/misspeak by Ridley. It's just the next sequel-prequel.

f**k it! I'm going to ask this:

For Ridley Scott,

Everyone knows you hate the very concept of Aliens vs Predator. If you were asked by Fox to come up with an idea for another movie, how would you approach it with the mindset that the film can be something more than a "VS" film?

Hah! I'll second that.  ;D

How would he go about directing a serious film with aliens and predators, given a big budget and plenty of creative freedom by FOX?

To Ridley, primarily:

Why the change from Prometheus sequel to Alien prequel?

Will Covenant sequels generally lead where the Prometheus sequels would have gone, but with a new cast?

Chances of an extended cut of Prometheus or Covenant?

Did you choose New Zealand partly because it originally had no natural predators until man arrived and spoiled Paradise?

Half joking: Was that the shadow of an Engineer saucer we saw over Memphis in Exodus?

I think if the Corporal asks Ridley anything about AvP, he might get "the look" that Damon Lindelof supposedly got when he brought it up while making Prometheus.

To Ridley Scott.

What do YOU love particularly about the Alien franchise?
What makes these films worth personally revisiting after so many sequels and spin-offs instead of creating a new IP?

For Ridley Scott- why did you choose Danny McBride for such an important role in the film with him being a almost strictly comedic actor if his role in the movie is not a comedic relief type of role.

For waterston- were you ever intimidated by the role for the movie or the inevitable comparisons to ripely and sigourney weaver?

First of all, congratulations, you must be very excited!

A few questions I have for all involved :

After seeing the finished movie on the big screen, what do they feel the most proud of regarding their involvement?

Does the final product reflect what they imagined it would be when they signed up for an Alien movie, or did it end up being different than what they had expected?

To Ridley Scott : after such a career and so many movies, does he still finish production on a movie feeling he has learnt something from it, and if so what did he learn from Covenant?

And then the same question in a more generic way for the rest of the cast : what do they feel they have learnt from the experience of being in Covenant? What lessons do they feel they've taken away from filming Covenant with Ridley Scott?

I hope you have the best time interviewing them. I look forward to see what you'll ask them!

Question to Demian Bichir: Ridley Scott is planning to make a western called Wraiths of the Broken Land. Would you like to play bad character in his future project?

After I finished reading Wraiths of the Broken Land I found out than Bichir is going to play in Covenant. Then I fought about him playing bad character in Scott's next project. Why not?

Btw fabulous opportunity Corp Hicks! I imagine it may just be one of the best nights of your entire life.

@Ridley:

how do you get away with it? I mean, we all can easily see Prometheus was a piss-off ripoff of AVP1, and now you have AVP:R with the NEO's.
what's your trick to get people to pay mad money for it?

ok just kidding, all things aside.

i would love that question above, about setting the AVP stories apart, would there be room for implementing or atleast cameo-ing the predator into the alien universe?

My question for Ridley Scott: After returning to science-fiction after working extensively on other genres, does he feel like he approaches it in a different manner (how much have his ideas about sci-fi and its potential changed?)

Great Hicks, congratulations.

To Ridley:

Are you planning to incorporate the biomechanoid style of Alien on the next movie?.

Dont you like a Engineer Planet more biomechanoid, like Giger did?.

Is Alien : Covenant a remake of Alien & Aliens like Episode VII was with the original trilogy of Star Wars?.

Why you decided to put Shaw on a minor role?.

To Fass:

Are you realizing you are now the main character on the Alien franchise?.

Another question, think about it if you may, probably not relevant at all but, if i had the chance, i would definately ask

to ridley:

Mr. Scott, obviously we are aware that many video game to movie adaptations don't work, Obviously the AVP movies are a great example of that, and there are plenty more outside of this universe. One particular video game, that has some features which are reminiscent of the facehugger from the Alien Universe, is Half-Life. I am not aware whether you are familiar with the specific franchise, but it has a very good storyline and much potential. Would you ever be interested in being the first director to properly translate that franchise into a Hollywood Blockbuster, presenting the same dark, gritty and horror and tense atmosphere of Alien, Prometheus and Covenant for this video game adaptation, or would you think you would get involved in too many Sci-fi movies?

Also:

Would you possibly make a story out of Amanda Ripley's story, like that presented in Alien:Isolation? Is there a possibility of making an Alien story aboard a huge space station and some simpler droid 'working joe' androids? Or do you think adding another movie with a 'humans vs Xeno' setting would flood the moviegoers with the Xenomorph and be too comparable to the original movie? Is your direction after Alien Covenant including the Xenomorph in an important role, or will the future movies (Like Awakening) rather focus on the Engineers, the Space Jockeys, or other Alien humanoid species and Colony explorations?

Congratulations again, Hicks. Stay frosty in that press room.  8)

For Ridley:

It's been reported that not long before the first Alien Vs. Predator movie was greenlit, you had begun development with James Cameron on an Alien film that he would write and you would direct. Can you give us any idea of the direction that film might've taken had it been made, or if it influenced your ideas for your recent entires in the series at all?

For McBride:

You've talked about being a diehard fan of the Alien series before you were cast in Covenant. Were there any particular nods to the previous films that you pushed for in this movie?

He's certainly capable of expressing thoughts on the matter, even if he personally dislikes the concept. Also if Ridley were to give a real answer and not a witty dismissal of sorts, I think it would make some waves.

We should keep this thread from devolving into criticism of the questions themselves. The Corporal has final say over which questions will be asked.

oh and ask him if vickers was a replacant and the likelyhood of her caracter ever returning in future installments. .if david can return as walter. . Then vickers can return as debbie. .or whatever. . .charlize theron could not get over what a phenomenon it was to work with him. .so she will be onboard. .and lets face it furiosa would be the perfect replacement for ripley!. . Not to mention her adoration towards fassbender. .their was huge chemistry during their promo's for prometheus. .

I have a delicious, handcrafted question for Sir Ridley Scott. It would be a distinct privilege if it were to be asked and answered.

"Alien: Covenant is thrilling while also being cerebral, dealing with themes of mortality and creation. Is there a right balance of thrilling and cerebral and if so, is that balance difficult to maintain?"

One minute we're treated to Weyland having a dialogue with his synthetic son about creation, and the next moment an alien is bursting out of someone's back. Ridley was right in that featurette when he said this will have everything we want in an Alien movie. It's big, it's (supposedly) good, and it has aliens in it. Most of the other franchise entries only get 2 out of those 3. Prometheus was big and good, but no aliens. Alien and Aliens were good and had aliens, but weren't big, etc.

Well it's not really a must since they've actually said that was the plan.

And Danny said he read the script expecting to be the comic relief but that there was no comedy in the script. It was a dark horror film.

I think a good question would be is if there is room in the Alien release schedule for Neil Blomkamp's idea?

Are we going to move away from the fleshy aliens to the more original look?

What does he think of the fan theory that he is the Jockey in 1979 Alien? At least tell him that has bounced about a bit lol.

Ridley's I Am Legend is discussed at length in David Hughes' The Greatest Sci-Fi Movies Never Made, a solid book which is likely out of date on some projects that have since come to fruition in one way or another. He had a gorgeous vision in mind but it didn't happen.

I think the script he was working from has long since leaked, but I've never read it all the way through. I've had the Arnold/Paul Verhoeven Crusade script sitting here forever too.

I imagine most of the same info from the book is now easily accessible online (as are large sections of the actual book via Google Books, which may solve your problem). IIRC Ridley worked on IAL with John Logan and Mark Protosevich. I wish it'd happened. I think it might've saved Arnold's career, and I think the final film was just awful.

No idea on who owns Crusade.

Btw fabulous opportunity Corp Hicks! I imagine it may just be one of the best nights of your entire life.

Corporal already had a gig with Ridley and LIndelof that was filmed. So nothing new to him. Will this be filmed as well?

Congrats. Its deserved as this the best alien franchise website .

I think this is the right one.

I won't be asking any non-Alien related questions. I'm only going to get chance to ask 3 or 4 questions of him. 2 questions I'd already definitely decided on asking Ridley was about the Alien 3 influences and for an update on Blomkamp's film.

Ah, finally found it! It was from Chris Seagers, the Alien: Covenant production designer. So probably good to bank.

Quote"The aesthetic choices aren't just superficial, they tie into the larger story. "Technically, we're slightly earlier than the Giger stuff, a little bit," Seagers explained. "We're sort of edging into that. That's part of that whole storyline."

Many thanks for putting this on your short list!
Also, I'd much appreciate if any of the following reaches the ears of the speakers:

for Ridley Scott: Will we ever see 14-feet tall breathing and walking Space Jockey creatures in a future Alien film?

for Waterston: After having rather tense experience with her role in Alien: Covenant (confusing stuffed dummies for real people on the set, having been chased in dark corridors during the filming), will she consider being cast in other sci fi horrors again (maybe reprising her Daniels role in the sequel :-) )?

for Fassbender: Has he been paid double? (joking :-) )

Corporal Hicks, thanks for the opportunity to chip in and I'm sure you will have a remarkable Q&A meeting (and ask the best questions of all the folks whoever will be present in there)!

Ridley was always jealous of other directors getting to make Alien sequels.  I don't think he's going to like being asked about the second and fourth sequels on the day that he's wanting to celebrate his Alien movie.  He clearly made this movie for Alien fans more than himself.  I would focus on his latest accomplishment, not the lesser accomplishments of lesser filmmakers who are competing with him to take over his own story.

Again, Ridley Scott is producer so it's not really competition and if it even gets made, that will be a long ways off from this film. There were also changes done to the script to avoid contradicting or usurping anything Ridley is directing in this franchise.

He's a grown man who is long used to working in this business without quitting and I highly doubt some questions about a different film within the same franchise that he is already set to work on will ruin his day.

Look, I'm a published journalist and documentary filmmaker.  I know a thing or two about etiquette and sensitivity when asking questions.  And I can think of several reasons why these questions are not ideal.  For example, you are wrong to think that Scott isn't sensitive.  A Ridley Scott fan would know that he's actually very sensitive.  All I'm doing is trying to make the small point that these aren't the most sensitive (or even relevant) questions that could be asked.  In fact, it might backfire.  You might not get to ask question #2 if he doesn't like question #1, and both of those questions are risky.  You will probably get a non-answer and will have wasted the opportunity of a lifetime.  Asking about anything other than his own accomplishments is disrespectful.  It would be a waste of his time and might possibly offend him.  What kind of answer do you expect?  You have to have an idea of what the answer might be before asking.  And I'm pretty sure you are not going to get much out of him on either subject.

Besides, he's been asked these questions before and will be asked them again before his publicity tour is over.  Imho, asking these questions would be a waste of an opportunity and disrespectful to one of the cinema gods on a special day for him.

I wouldn't expect any sort of meaningful answer on Blomkamp's film and I wouldn't ask it myself, but it's not my interview either. If he doesn't like the question, he'll just brush it off. It's not like the Corporal is going to ask him how he'd direct a gay porn film, this is AvPG and any Alien related question should be on the table. Sensitive or not, I still think Ridley Scott can handle himself just fine and to suggest it's not proper etiquette to ask about an Alien film he wanted to produce sounds more like you're just biased against it.

It's not disrespectful. No disrespect is intended. You can use anything I've ever said as your signature. I just liked the statement "Ridley Scott isn't above any questions.", just as I favored that Ridley quote previously in my signature. Now, if I edited your quote to say something obscene or silly, that would be disrespectful.

Heck, SpeedyMaxx has two quotes in his signature.

Anyway... I think the Blomkamp question has the potential to be awkward, but it is indeed the definitive elephant in the room.

But this comment is so off base though. I'm not even thinking of that way. And I've never looked at people that work in the entertainment industry being above other people. I just don't think like that. And I'm a huge Ridely Scott fan. I just don't see how asking this question would upset him. Because any good filmmaker can make a movie work. Just my two cents.

I'll tell the mods to retract my report. It just seemed like you were singling me out.

No, not singling you out at all. Heck, for all I know my question was stupid!

But Protozoid articulated it better than I ever could. You'll only get a small block of time to ask maybe three questions, and then it's off to the next journalist. The entertainment industry also isn't a monolith. Ridley and Colin Strause both work in the entertainment industry, but are vastly different. We nor Ridley may think he's above everyone, but he is. Not on a basic human level, but in the field he's known for and the interview pertains to: film. He's got maybe five or six people above him.

I'll remove Your Quote from my signature though.

I, personally, wouldn't go into an interview with a director and ask about another film, especially one not made by themselves. It insinuates that you are more curious about that film than the one you're there to talk about. Even if it's 1 question out of 20 it will stand out.

I think the script he was working from has long since leaked, but I've never read it all the way through. I've had the Arnold/Paul Verhoeven Crusade script sitting here forever too.

Ah, cool. I'll have to search for that book. Thanks for letting me know about it. I also have that Crusade script. Doesn't Arnold own the rights to that script?

I imagine most of the same info from the book is now easily accessible online (as are large sections of the actual book via Google Books, which may solve your problem). IIRC Ridley worked on IAL with John Logan and Mark Protosevich. I wish it'd happened. I think it might've saved Arnold's career, and I think the final film was just awful.

No idea on who owns Crusade.

Arnold does, Hughes talks about it in "Tales from Development Hell" that he took the rights to the movie in exchange for a reduction in what he was owe from it never getting put into production.  He was looking to have it made when he became Governor.

I love both of those books and wish Hughes would write more.

I will not be asking any questions relating to AvP or not relating to Alien. I will be asking about Blomkamp's film though. He is/was a producer on it and involved in it, having commented on it in the past. I'll likely squeeze it into a catch-all question about later films including Awakening.

I'd love to ask about the Alien guide we've been reading about on here.  How far it extends, if it goes into idea for awakening and after.  If it includes bloomkamps ideas for alien v.  Asking about the guide might be a decent catch-all question about both Awakenings and Alien V.

Or not.

Seriously though, that sounds like a good question to ask and I'm curious what he'll say.

Let's all hope it doesn't break etiquette and ruin the big night, leading to Ridley never speaking to the Corporal ever again and hating him forever upon which AvPG will slowly fade into the darkness to be no more. This could be the beginning of the end...

I will be very curious to know the budget of the film. But I don't know if it's a good idea to talk about money haha

I know I posted a couple already but I'll throw this one into the hat as well. For Ridley:

As you developed the script for Prometheus with Jon Spaihts and Damon Lindelof, the story went through many different permutations as it transformed from a direct Alien prequel into more of its own entity. Were there iterations as numerous in shaping the script for Covenant, or was it more of a straight line?

Have you ever bought any Alien related merchandise? an action figure or statue or anything like that?

For Fassbender:

With David's new found God complex, do you think if given the chance, he would complete the Engineers original plan and destroy Earth?

For Waterston and Bichir:

Ridely is known for provoking real fear from his actors by not letting them know to much about how the scene is going to play out. Did he use this similar approach for Covenant?

For Crudup:

Oram is a character that believes in destiny and that nothing happens by chance. That being said, considering what happens to your character in the film, do you think he welcomed and maybe even appreciated being the given the opportunity to sacrifice himself to create new life?

One you could maybe ask Fassbender, he seems pretty clued-up.

Is your characters, David and Walter a nod to Alien producers, David Giler and Walter Hill?  Especially considering that Giler and Hill originally came up with the idea of making Ash an android in Alien.

I know he was asked that in the earlier roundtables so you should see an answer to that.

I've just done Fassbender, Ridley, Bichir, McBride and Crudup. Waiting for Waterston. It's flown by way too much. Only really got chance for 3 questions and feel like I squandered them with Ridley. It'll be released online after the weekend. No livestream.

:'( :'( :'( Dam how the f**k did I miss this thread? Must of been when I was trying to avoid Covenant spoilers. Would of liked to put afew questions forward to Ridley and the rest of the cast..  however I can imagine you guys got a lot of similar questions to ask them. I will enjoy what ever questions, that you guys from AVP Galaxy went with.

Btw Hicks, when are you planning to have your AvP Galaxy Podcast of Covenant review up? Looking forward to also hearing yours and the regular members who participate in your podcast thoughts on Covenant.

Honestly guys, I feel like I wasted the interview with Scott and Fassbender. It was my first one of the lot and took me completely by surprise. I didn't prioritise the questions properly.
