Title: Rebellion Sorry for PS3 Demo Problems
Post by: Darkness on Feb 08, 2010, 10:54:01 PM

There’s a new article on CVG where Rebellion give us an update on how the demo’s been doing. Basically, it’s had 14,000 downloads on X-Box Live with an approval rating of 4.5/5. There was an issue with the PC demo where people had difficulty with the matchmaking. That was patched almost straight away, however PS3 users are still left unable to play the demo unless you do it via friends. Here’s what they had to say on the matter:

“The one unforeseen issue was the matchmaking on PS3, that really came out of left field and we’ve still got Sony engineers helping us look into what is at fault. I understand why people question how it wasn’t spotted sooner but we just can’t replicate that kind of scale in normal testing.

“Had we left Create and Browse Games in there as with the full game the problem wouldn’t have been so serious. Bottom line is we’re really sorry to all those PS3 owners and are working as fast as possible to find a solution which will help them enjoy the demo too.”

There’s a couple of new articles. There’s a new preview on CHUD, Guardian and XBox360Achievements and an interview on Kotaku. The Kartel have recently uploaded a “mega feature” including interviews, hands-on impressions and more.

There’s also a new review in Game Informer Magazine (scan here) where it scored 5.75/10. I wouldn’t take too much stock of what he said because the things he was complaining about aren’t really relevant. Thanks to Tim, ikarop, newbeing and Richman678 for the news.

Gameinformer has always been like that, extremly negative about game reviews, they even found loads of problems with all the halos and modern warfares  ???    :huh. I played the demo and it was a blast.  :)

That GameInformer review is terrible. The reviewer obviously knows nothing about AVP because one of the complaints he makes if that he doesn't like the motion tracker because its too loud! Its suppose to be loud so you know when your about to be killed. And obviously he doesn't get the point of the flashlight- Its suppose to limit your vision!
I have more complaints but im starting to ramble.

I really hope this one terrible review doesnt cause a bunch of canceled pre-orders and people choosing to buy Bioshock instead.

To be fair, Halo 2 and 3 sucked compared to the first.
and CoD4 beats CoD6 anyday.
CoD2 still beats CoD4 though :P
i could find alot of problems in CoD4 and 6.
But.. on topic - the avp demo is awesome and i cant wait for single player, its just sad that the predators are at a disadvantage in the map and cant get very good vantage points except the blatantly obvious ones that aliens love to hang at.
Although i saw an out-door forest map played and it looked amazing for preds and i cant wait for that, also for singleplayer to;
1. Bully marines and pick them off slowly.
2. Bully scientists :P
3. Shit myself and scream mindlessly, i refuse to play the marine campaign during daylight :P

Doublepost<3 soz
@JediMasterGabe - Whats wrong with bioshock?
ive bought both AvP and Bioshock.. and Bad Company :P :P

I think those who post comments like "I cancelled my order based on this demo" usually end with "and I didn't like the game  anyway" so let them by Bioshock. It's probably a better game FOR THEM. I've waited years for this. It's not everything i wanted (I wanted split screen co-op for the single player campaign) but it'll be enough. Expecting a good 7.5 maybe 8 in reviews- hopefully better!

Ok guys those of you who saw the review don't go getting second thoughts now. He dosent know crap! I agree with JediMasterGabe that he has no clue what hes talking about, I mean he was saying how the alien controls are horrible. When I play the demo Alien is my fav and I think the controls are AMAZING!

So people dont worry about this stupid review this guy has no clue what hes talking about. And also
ALIEN FTW!!!!

@Farow: All I meant was that Bioshock and Dante's Inferno are likly to be AVP's main competition, I have nothing against Bioshock.

Also going back to how bad that Gameinformer review is, the guy said he was easily disoriented by playing as the Alien; well that shows how dedicated he is to trying to enjoy the game. If anything it shows what a terrible gamer he is in general. It took me 5 mins to get used to playing as the Alien.

I'm still not sure how its all going to pan out.  But I"m hoping its good.

One thing though, looking through all the articles and links above, I'm a little unclear on how the game is actually going to "look".  After playing the demo, NONE of it looks as good as it does in those game shots found in the articles.  I'm not saying the game looks bad, but it certainly did not reflect the images on display in the above articles.  So, I'm curious just how polished the finish product is going to be, and just how close its going to look to the images we've seen sprung up just about everywhere.

Sounds like the reviewer did what most scrubs have done. Played it. Got killed a lot. Then decided it sucked because of his poor proformance. I mean if he is bad at the game must mean that the game sucks right? What a moron. L2P. I mean Jesus.... Looks like he wrote a good review of about a couple minutes of each campaign and a breif multiplayer match before getting his ass killed and turning to right his hate review. It has "I suck at videogame written all over it.

If anyone has been reading Gameinformer lately they would know that alot of games are not even given a chance for a decent review. I mean every issue it seems has a list of the reviewers favorite games and at least 2 of them's number 1 game has been World of Warcraft since the game came out.

Other then that they can't stop masturbating thinking about bioshock 2 which I'm sure will be great but just because other games are good or maybe even better doesn't mean a game sux..

Sounds like this guy got totally raped online....poor melee combat? This dude needs to go some place seriously....learn to play a f**king game before you bashed you f**king prick.

Pffft... yeah I got my new issue of GI today and the review's a joke. Critics... seriously, after playing the crap outta the demo (and still goin' at it) it's f***'n AMAZING.

Regarding their comments on the controls (specifically the Alien) or the CQC system, they must be pretty damn horrible at video games 'cause it's worked like a charm for me and I'm nothing to brag about. And the gfx, did he even play the same game? 'Cause they're gorgeous.

Anyway... I can't WAIT for next week!   ;D

I can't believe I just signed up for a year of their narrow minded scribble. Maybe I'll wipe my ass with their pages while I read my Avp comis just to refresh myself on the awesomeness.

Put it this way if this game was made up creatures I would probably thought I was playing the worst game I ever played.  Im sorry but the fact that its aliens and predators is the only reason we like this game.  For me anyway.
It does deserve a 5

Since when did gameinformer let 14 year olds review video games? Honestly it seems like the person who reviewed AVP doesn't know anything about video games. Especially the fact that AVP is practically 3 games in one. In what other game can you walk and run on any surface? And rip people throats out? Or go cloak and rip humans heads off with wrist blades with such detail. Or being scared the crap out of in a dark room with a flash light and nothing but xenomorphs crawling all around you? This is one of a kind game! I think gameinformer should start hiring 18-30 year olds to review there games cus these older guys don't know what there talking about, they should go stick to there pac-man machine In there basement. Sorry for the rant.

Judging from all your comments (for the record i havent got the demo   :'(    ) it sounds like AvP is the shit.  With regards to the reviewers comments; isnt that what the game relys on? PLEASE ANSWER! Sorry for caps.
Will the X360 have pre-order multiplayer skins? I noticed the PS3 and PC had the three unique skins for each race... But I didn't see the bonus in pre-ordering for the 360. Will it?D: I want to prove that I was apart of the "Omfg I can't wait for AVP" community!!!
Also.. I don't know about you guys but that Pred skin that comes with pre-order is pretty badass. :) - Just imagine that mask being on your screen as he tears your head off. >:D

I got into a game last night on PS3, took about 4 minutes but i got one (and owned), so it is working. I still rather PC version for its crystal clarity and accuracy.  Cant use control pads for a FPS, always been a fan of the mouse and keyboard.

Ben Reeves is the guy from Game Informer who reviewed it. He's a freaking tool and always gives games ridiculous scores. I think he does this to be the odd man out. That or he's just a biased prick with very bad taste.

Ben Reeves can take his review and go slippy fist himself. I hope no one takes his review to heart. If you enjoy the demo and are a fan of the source material, critic scores be damned!

I'm gonna be honest here...I love the AVP demo, but it really isn't the greatest. It could be better. I'm trying to not be in fanboy denial. I'm still going to buy it, and I will enjoy the shit out of it, but it's more Left 4 Dead, than Call of Duty. Left 4 Dead is pretty damn popular, and that's why it doesn't matter, but the point being is that it's very arcade-ish. It's not as detailed as it could be, and it lacks some of the features other FPS have, like zooming and crouching. I'm just saying from a technical standpoint, it's not anything spectacular. But neither was the game Prototype, and that was still really fun to play. Graphics aren't everything. But I'm not gonna kid myself and say it's the "pre-release code". Chances are the actual game will be exactly the same, and I have yet to see a demo on PS3 that looked any different than it's final version.

Hey Guys! I've been playing the demo for a couple of days and I say it is great. Only one thing annoyed me, remember the freedom of being able to pounce or leap as an alien....it seems as though the pounce in this avp is good until you suddenly lose force...maybe its just me...I remember AVP2 when you could pounce from ledge to ledge, or as a marine or pred taking out an alien who was mid air and pretty high up....but apart from that it's cool! Thumbs up!
Title: Re: Rebellion Sorry for PS3 Demo Problems
Post by: BMS on Feb 09, 2010, 08:31:07 AM
The GI review means little to me, since the first AVP was also blasted by a few gaming mags (the largest being Computer Gaming Monthly which gave it a 6/10 I believe.) I will wait for the Gamespot and IGN reviews....the original scored above an 8 there and if this one does I will buy it. Unfortunately, a game that is UNIVERSALLY panned is usually not worth your money- mainly because it is less a matter of opinion and more the presence of some universally off-putting flaw. The Demo, for me, is fun (especially as the Alien) but I am hoping the final version has more graphical options (for the PC) and crouching (it's important for the Pred.) The facial animations are top-notch (Crysis quality) in the demo, but the lighting & backgrounds need some DX11 work and Anti-Aliasing.

@JT ~ what platform are you using to play because PC is solid. I did play the PS3 version and must admit I was disappointed in the quality compared to some games I have played (i.e. ghostbusters in 1080p) but I still had a blast ripping off marines skulls.

Tell you guys what. I have problems with the Demo, sure. No crouch and no Iron sights.....But I'll tell you somethin else. The sense of panic and hair raising forboding you get whilst playing the marine is phonominal. And thats all I need. The sense of atmosphere in the game is astounding. And thats only one level in multiplayer!!!!!

My buddies and I were playing 4 player L4D at my place on saturday night. We set up 2 x boxes and  2 projectors displaying on the same wall and went hell for leather on the zombies till about 3 in the morning. Anyway, during a break my buddies, hard core gamers to a man, were asking me about the AVP demo. Now, I'm a PS3 man so I told them best off downloading the demo onto one of the x boxs which we had in the room. They did that and started playing.......they were AMAZED at the game. Each of them has vowed to get it. They demanded I put on Aliens after they played the demo! I asked them; 'hey, what about L4D?'  'Forget it', they said. 'We gotta watch Aliens'. We spent the rest of the night/mornin watchin Aliens and quoting it from end to end.

Knowing my friends as I do, that response from them is the greatest endorsement this game will get for me.

Right, well did you notice how on the menu screen for the xbox there is a revolving xray of the facehugger in the background, looks all nice and cool.

On the PS3 version, its not there.

Also, the glow effect on the Pulse rifle mussel after firing seems better and more pronounced on the XBOX than PS3. Generally I think the graphics look better on XBOX360.....much to my disappointment.

the facehugger is not on the menu screen, thats on the pc version.
the ps3 pulse rifle is better imo cuz it DOESNT blind ya with its muzzle flash, xbox version does....
also the glow/burn effect i dont see any diff at all, maybe ur comparing 2 different monitors?
cuz a tv can be VERY diff than other tvs...
contrast ratio - the HD quality? - hd ready or full hd - all that stuff counts towards how the game looks so dont compare games on diff screens, use the same screen

@Spoon: it's sounds like you've wanted this game to fail, and for the 100th time, This Is a DEMO not the final version.

simple, if youre a fan this game will be the best thing to come out since avp2. im gunna love it, i h8 pc gaming and dont care if it has bit better graphics . i love my ps3 and no one has the right to say which console or pc is better, its about the individual.

@bardiya

they hit the one point I'm still curious about, but I guess was verified.  every screen shot I've seen of this game looks gorgeous, but the actual game doesn't come anywhere near the visuals I've seen.  I'm a little surprised by that.  So...what the heck were all those photos from?  even the demo doesn't look all that great, but is still fun to play (wish there was iron sights and crouching though...still).

So i just read the review. GI does this a lot. The only reviewers from the magazine i take seriously are Andy and Andrew Reiner cuz he actually appreciates the kinds of games i like, including AVP. He gave Bioshock 2 an 8.5 i believe. But he was completely honest about it. I have no doubt in my mind that if he had reviewed AVP [being a skilled gamer and all] we would have been reading a much more neutral and intelligent article. Like everyone else has been saying, don't let this sway your decision or cancel your reservation. If you weren't getting it for the sole reason that it's AVP, at least wait until a few more reviews come out and then make your judgment.

Can somebody please explain what this "create and browse" thing is for the Ps3?  Is it like a server list?

  ???

Does the 360 get it too?

"Instead we have a title trying to live off the fumes of the two dormant franchises."

Cant say I'm surprised by that review. Especially once the gameplay vids started coming out, all the clues were there to be honest. The SP does look horribly linear and too consolized.

Like most peeps in here, I'm gonna cross my fingers this is just a one off bad review. But considering this is GI which is known for its usually very accurate reviews, I'm not gonna hold my breath.

It better not affect the continued development of Gearbox ACM game, because that game really shows true promise and IMO its about time we got back to the pure forms of these franchises.

shut the f**k up about iron sights.... this is avp not cod... ibet you didnt cry when halo or left 4 dead didnt have them..
Title: Re: Rebellion Sorry for PS3 Demo Problems
Post by: Sh0dan on Feb 09, 2010, 08:34:59 PM
@GrimyGhost: ACM has iron sights thankfully. I often find it annoying playing L4D because it doesn't have them. At least some of the weapons in the Halo games have an aim mode. Its not quite a proper ADTS, but it gets you by and they are the only weapons I tend to stick with.
-
Not having ADTS is like not having a reload button for me. So that is one area in the new AvP game I already knew would disappoint me. All FPS should have ADTS in my opinion. Without it, its like not being able to look up or down in the days of the original Doom.

not sure i agree with the GI reviews, demo was pretty poor (considering my expectations), but then FFA is always pretty poor so its not like the other formats will be. Furthermore, his argument that the motion tracker got in the way...wtf.... clearly he does not know its primary function...the idiot has planted the seed of doubt in my mind.

Alright 8/10 from OXM UK! Why don't we post that review up also? Because this one Dumbass's review from gameinformer is gonna f**k up a bunch of preorders. IGN and Xplay are the reviews I like.

@GrimyGhost
Don't play halo, and haven't played L4D, so, sorry, no comparison there.  but thanks for the assumption.   ::)

Still would rather have iron sights, just feels more natural, but thanks for your belligerent response, you must be incredibly easy to get along with.   ;)

@cabbageheat: ghost is right there are no iron sights on the pulse rifle so there's no reason to have them in the game. If  ur so obssesed with a zoom u can walk around with the sniper rifle
Title: Re: Rebellion Sorry for PS3 Demo Problems
Post by: cabbageheat on Feb 10, 2010, 01:15:28 AM
lol   ;D

I'm not obsessed with zoom. Nor am I the only one whose requested this.  Its a staple of FPS's in general, and its an option I feel is sorely missing from the game.  That's it.  I am amazed at how asking for, or would like to see,  iron sights and crouching are reacted to in such vehement ways, its just almost laughable.  "shut the f**k up" is usually the most requested response when this is brought up (great discourse by the way).  If you guys don't want it, or don't care for it, I certainly don't attack you for it, just voicing an opinion.  Still gonna pick this up regardless.

Post by: JediMasterGabe on Feb 10, 2010, 01:24:31 AM
I don't think they're a staple of FPS (again halo and l4d), but yea it doesn't really matter. We're all on the same side; those who love AVP.
Title: Re: Rebellion Sorry for PS3 Demo Problems
Post by: Sh0dan on Feb 10, 2010, 01:46:16 AM
It has become a staple, just like a reload button. FPS's never used to have one of those either, but it seems ATDS has passed a few gamers and developers by, though I think its pretty clear from the feedback on most FPS games that don't include it, that more gamers want that feature than those who do not. So as you said cabbageheat, those guys don't actually have to use it. Its optional.   ;D

I love ads in games! But AvP is too fast paced for that kind of game mechanic. By the time you get your gun to your eye someone will have attacked you from behind. It works better without it!

Demo won't see a patch, Sony makes patches into an ordeal so the update doesn't brick the system, think PS3 owners like myself are just gonna have to sit tight till release. Hopefully the issue won't exist on the final version.

@cabbageheat
i too like to look down the barrel for a better shot in fps games
aka iron site
more imersive than a crosshair fired from the hip on screen  (something i thought they,d add in this game for added atmospere).nerve jingling when your ammos low,and every enemys death counts due to precice death dealing.but then again controllers are shit for this mode of play.
same with crouch taking cover from flying projectiles jesus this became a gaming staple 15years ago even if its to fit in small vents or crawl under a bulkhead

again even tho i pre ordered i know they just ported this from console but had the decency to leave some pc elements in it and told us

Game Informer review might be shit, but there is no doubt that the game suffers from heavy issues and mishaps. The whole demo launch is a disaster with more...

We'll see on Tuesday, wish it still was pre 2005 b4 the f**king console generalization..

Sounds like the reviewer just made an early review hating on the game, a highly anticipated game, just to make bank for the magazine that's publishing it... but I guess he forgot two things that the people possess - a scanner, and the internet.

@ Anonymous, told ya, the gfx of a game depends ENTIRELY on ur monitor (consoles not pc)

anyways, ppl need to stop complaining about the iron sights shit, not VERY game hgas it, and this game DOESNT NEED IT at all, i get 30 kills as marine every time i have no problems aiming whatsoever!!

Iron sight would be sweet but I agree there wont be time to even use it.  You hardly pick them off in distance anyway as your fight stealthy and very quick creatures.  Plus only the pulse rifle would need it and no point in coding it for one weapon.
Still want crouch though for human and pred.
Remove block for alien also for gods sake.

The GI review was terrible - the guy showcases a general lack of knowledge about the game and complains about some really bizarre things (the motion tracker, the alien's handling).
