My guess:when you see them leave the Prometheus with the vehicles they probably go to the big head or something else and they bring something back so the flamethrowers are used to hold off some little things some little scavengers or something. (like they do in the Fifth Element underneath the landing gear of the exotic cruise ship) and the infection has f**ked someone already up

The mutant in the screencap I posted looks like something out of Resident Evil.  I really hope that is just the beginning stage of a more eventual alien transformation.
