Title: AvPGalaxy Interview with Brian Tyler
Post by: Darkness on Oct 23, 2007, 11:32:57 PM

Corporal Hicks got the chance to interview music composer Brian Tyler about his work on AvP Requiem. He just finished recording the score last week and we even have some pictures of them recording the AvPR score.

Brian Tyler

AvPGalaxy – How long did it take you to actually write the score…?

Brian Tyler – The great thing about this film is that we were all on the same page in what we wanted musically. We wanted it gritty, scary, adrenaline pumping, anxiety ridden, huge as well as quiet and creepy, epic, with a wide dynamic range. We wanted the score to reflect the tradition of the aliens and predators. So it was intensely hard work but in lock-step. The Brothers Strause, Fox, John Davis, Robert Kraft, Mike Knobloch, and the editor Dan Zimmerman were all awesome in pushing forward towards the same goal: let’s make this score kill!

The interview covers a lot of different areas about composing AvP Requiem as well as the processes involved in composing. Check the rest out here.

The best news is that there are opening credits.  Takes us back into Alien territory after AvP went the "titles only" route a la Predator/2.

Oh, and someone threw an extra 'E' into Giger.  :)

he used some fancy words when he summed up some of the tracks "Decimation Proclamation" :P

That's the name of the cue itself.  I like when composers name their tracks a bit more inventively than "fight scene" or "finale"

Check out the tracklisting on Alien3 for a good example.

Great news!! But im not understand something. My english is not perfect yet! :)

Brian told this:

"Well, there is a section of the movie that is 44 straight minutes of music. To tell the story musically and have ebb, flow, dynamics, while continue to ratchet up the tension is extremely difficult. But of course, that is why composing films is such a great job."

That means the music in the film will be only 44 minutes long?  :-\ Or i just missunderstand something?!

What he means is there are a number of tracks he had to record for the film. One of them was 44 minutes long. The others weren't.

That interview is the first to have shown me the guys truly understands the sort of themes which are necessary. Good stuff, Hicks!

Shall have to wait to hear what the music is like, but if nothing else, 'Decimation Proclamation' seems to show he has a knack for inventive language. "Ear-laceratingly violent" might become one of my favourite phrases now. :)

The music for this film seems like it's going to be great.

And for the Predator fans out there, he pretty much confirmed that the tribal drums are back. Best news of the film so far to me. Very happy.

Music is so important! Especially for a movie like this one. 44 minutes of straight music?! So I guess the movie will either be 2 hours or very close to two hours ;D

I hope this movie is a 2 hour 10 minute film personally. I'm gonna cry if they say it's 1 hour 30 minutes ::)

A film like this needs to be epic, it needs to be 2 hours or more of pulse pounding, electrifying, heart stopping action adventure stuff.

I've never had any doubts about the quality of Tyler's music for AvP-R, the dude has consistently created one great score after another. In fact I'd go as far to say that he's the best young up & coming composer out there. Picking him to score the film is one of the best decisions the Strauses have made so far.

The score of this film is going to help pull us into each scene of the movie. More-so when we hear some of the homages from the original scores.

Find an old copy of the original 'Aliens Versus Predator' game. It has the entire soundtrack on its own CD. The best attempt to merge the themes, I've ever heard. :)

Brian Tyler is good. I listened to some of his work, and they were good. If you listen, you can kinda hear Jerry Goldsmith-style in it, which is weird, since he has done sequals to movies Jerry has done (Alien, Rambo) and replaced Jerry for Timeline.

NOTE: Aliens also used music from previous movies (remember when Ripley and Newt were stuck by the elevators ? Same music from Alien when Ripley left Jones after seeing the Alien at the end.).

He seems to generally know what he's doing in terms of direction for the score. Great news, whilst I kinda enjoyed the first, it was kinda bland in places, so here's to hoping Tyler can pull it off. I'd love some Alien3 like tones, but that's me.

Why O why, (not just for this film but for all highly intense action movies) dont composers use big battle themes with a chanting choir anymore?!!!!   It is single handedly the only element that can transform a fight scene from a good one, to a truely great one.

"Why O why, (not just for this film but for all highly intense action movies) dont composers use big battle themes with a chanting choir anymore?!!!!"  The AvPR is not the movie what it needs the "chanting choir" music. That is Star Wars and it already has.

"chanting choir" is good, but it can only work for some films but not AvP, i think the score in AvPR will b better than AvP.

'Alien 3' was far from being 'Star Wars' and it probably has the most obvious chanting choir of all.

Totally disagree guys, the chanting choir adds a different dimension to battle scenes. Epic is what we need, and that sort of music brings Epic. Dont get me wrong, I agree that parts of AVP needs the themes weve gotten so far but AVP is a different movie to Alien and indeed predator. Its time to break the mould; the chanting choir would be great I think. Anyway, thats just my opinion
