Title: The Predator Home Releases
Post by: Corporal Hicks on Sep 12, 2018, 09:03:19 AM
"The Predator" is getting a Zavvi exclusive 4K/Blu-ray Steelbook release (https://www.steelbookbluray.com/eagerly-awaited-sci-fi-action-sequel-the-predator-is-getting-a-zavvi-exclusive-4k-blu-ray-steelbook-release/)

QuoteNormally HMV bring us the UK exclusives on new Fox releases, but this time Zavvi have bagged the honours, and pre-orders are live right now.

Final art and release date are still TBC, but here's hoping Fox stick with this one, as it look spot on. This release will include the movie on 4K and Blu-ray discs.

Even I wasn't expecting that. I think its great though. The sooner the better. It actually might perform strongly on home video.

I think I might pull a Huggs and wait for the DVD. So in that respect, it probably works to our advantage  :) There is a good chance that watching it at home might change the perspective a little. Flaws might not show up as overtly as on the big screen.

No AVP or AVPR as predictable.

8 Discs?

Predator- 4K & Blu-ray
Predator 2- 4K & Blu-ray
Predators- 4K & Blu-ray
The Predator- 4K & Blu-ray

No "Anthology" Disc(s) then.

Don't have a Blu-Ray player and DVD is redundant so I will download this.......via SKY-TV store ofc. ::)

Actually would be interesting to see if Cable set-box downloads see an end to home media sales.

Yeah, even with the rise of digital I think it's going to be a long, long time before you seen physical media phased out for movies. People like to build libraries and have that sense of ownership.

Nothing beats a physical copy. Guaranteed picture quality, plays with no internet, doesn't have to be downloaded, can't be dropped by a streaming service, ect. It's right there when you need it, all day long.

  • Deleted Scenes (6:45 minutes)

Considering the final 3rd act of the movie was reshot (and key scenes missing) I was expecting 30-40 minutes.

6.45 wouldn't cover deleted scenes from the original cut.

Yeah exactly. The effects weren't even finished a point raised by LittleJimmy who said THE PREDATOR was a "death by focus group/don't judge a film's final cut based on a work-in-progress work-print".

Despite cringing at the sight of emissary predators atop of an APC, in an ill-advised predator/human team-up (Lex and Scar got a bad rap despite us at AVP-GALAXY knowing why this was allowed) I still have a morbid curiosity of what Shane Black's original crazy vision was like.

Being an effects heavy movie I too doubt they'll spend any cash finishing and re-editing the scenes back in due to budget costs. Not to mention 20th Century Fox didn't even allow an AVP-R colour correction Blu-Ray.
Title: Re: The Predator Home Releases

Yeah when I hoped for a director's cut, I never expected the original emissary Predator cut (even though I'd love to see it, even unfinished).  However, I did hope for a few inserted scenes director's cut to boost the narrative.

---

As expected, the first glimpse of the all 4 movie collection:

I wasn't expecting a director's cut, there was too much tinkering right up to the last minute for it to have been re-assessed for that.

I will be delighted if the Emissary Predators footage is part of the deleted scenes, but I wouldn't be surprised if it were instead more character moments and extended scenes. As for the original 3rd act in daylight, I'm sure way too much of it is absent of the Upgrade Predator CGI to be worthwhile for inclusion.

I wonder how Shane Black's first cut would have played for better or worse. He sounded quite beat up by the end of the process.

I think these scenes will exclusively relate to the final version we got in cinemas. I imagine one will be the scene where Lynch wins the Winnebago in a game of cards.

This film has been a disaster, even toward the bitter end. I feel bad about Shane and his crew. I think Shane had this idea he thought was really cool and would have revolutionized the Franchise. However, in reality, it was extremely flawed and, most importantly, immature. I can understand this error. When I was in high school I wrote an Alien script. I thought it was fantastic and innovative. Five years later I look back and see it as a highly flawed work. I don't know all the details of how Shane was given the rights to write and make a predator film but it seems that the script was made in around a month time. I think Fox gave him a time limit to submit an idea and Shane, being in love with predator, didn't want to take the chance that he would not be the chosen director. Thus he got something finished in a month or two and submitted it to Fox. From my own personal experience and what I have seen in the industry, writing a good script takes a lot of time and a lot of research. A good example of this is Blade Runner 2049. The film took a couple of years to write and make yet it was incredible and won oscars.

But the alternative cut would have had "scene missing" cards, unedited takes,  missing or incomplete CGI (sans a guy in a ping pong ball Velcro suit stand in). The scenes suggested would only make sense in post-production.

People do not know what a "work print" looks like.

Some fans are so desperate for traffic or subscribers- they make or post fake trailers, posters, concept art and pass it off as an exclusive find.

Even if they knowingly do so; knowing it is fake, just to impress people.

Don't recall if this has come up already but digital release is 17th of November.

And looks like the actual press release/details have been released: https://goodnerdbadnerd.com/2018/10/30/the-predator-is-coming-home/

QuoteLOS ANGELES, CA – The hunt for the perfect holiday gift is over. The universe's greatest hunter returns in The Predator on Digital and Movies Anywhere November 27 and 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray™ and DVD December 18. Fans can bring home a special edition Predator 4-Movie Collection, which includes Predator, Predator 2, Predators and The Predator on 4K Ultra HD™ and Blu-ray.

The hunt has evolved – and so has the explosive action – in the next chapter of the Predator series, from director Shane Black (Iron Man 3). Now, the most lethal hunters in the universe are stronger, smarter and deadlier than ever before....and only a ragtag crew of ex-soldiers and an evolutionary biology professor can prevent the end of the human race.

With the special edition Predator 4-Movie Collection, fans can experience four times the terror with a killer collection of action-packed Predator movies, plus four collector cards of the original film poster re-issue with some of the franchises most iconic quotes on the back. In Predator, Arnold Schwarzenegger wages an all-out war against an extraterrestrial that hunts humans for sport. Then in Predator 2, Danny Glover battles the fearsome creature in the urban jungle of Los Angeles. In Predators Adrien Brody leads a group of elite warriors on an alien planet targeted by a new Predator breed. Finally, in The Predator, Boyd Holbrook discovers that the most lethal hunters in the universe are stronger, smarter and deadlier than ever.

Special Features:

  • Deleted Scenes (6:45 minutes)

  • Little Black (10:22 minutes)

  • Evolution of the Predator (20:05 minutes)

  • Hunting the Predator (9 minutes)

  • Gallery

  • Trailers

Except for a "Predator Catch-Up" sub for the "Trailers", all we got was some title changes to the docs.  Weeeee!  :P

Really those titles might not have been changed, just lost in translation.

Well that tweet from John Squires saying it wasn't the complete list of bonus features turned out to be a false hope for something substantial.  :-\

Same here. I just can't justify 4k, and my minimalism can't tolerate a bunch of booklets/statues. I just want the movie. Disc goes in the wallet, case goes in recycling. No dust, no fuss, no wasted space.

I can't provide an exact quote, but it's from what I've read various times online and the Blu-ray forums. I believe it's something around 17 weeks from cinema to DVD in the UK, as that's the agreement with the cinema chains for the theatrical distribution window.

Just as a note, but Shane Black never provided a commentary track with his last film, The Nice Guys, either.

And here I thought it was a joke about the weather in England or something.  :D

As for "doing one's part", I think that is definitely subjective. Calling out problems and mistakes in a civil/respectful fashion is also doing one's part. Like when some people say you have to support your favorite sports team, even when they lose constantly, or you're not a true fan. I disagree with that notion. You locate the problem, and either remove it and/or press for change. That's how things improve.

So I did my part by not buying a ticket. I simply couldn't and wouldn't support the nutty approach this movie took with the franchise.

I agree with this sentiment... i.e. avoiding this release in it's entirety to make a statement both theatrically and on home video.

However when one suggests they have "done their part" by purchasing a ticket, in essense financially supporting said movie, while the other hand plans to illegally download a copy to view at home, i.e. not financially supporting its home release, it's ultimately a half-measure, a mixed signal, a way to self legitimize a reason to illegally download a copy for home viewing and save some money.

But either way, you probably can see, I personally do not support the illegal downloads of films.

Indeed quite so. This was a communications error on my part. I leaped from one thought, straight into another, without effectively bridging the gap.

Allow me to elaborate. My statement about what constituted "doing one's part" was not a defense of anyone or any activity, and certainly not a defense of illegal acts. It was merely an examination of what I believe "doing one's part" constitutes, in regards to supporting the theatrical run of the film. That it is a subjective process.

In other words, some may choose to support the film at release, others may not, and yet both may think they've done what's in the best interest of the franchise. It was merely a rebuttal to the idea that supporting this questionable movie in the theater was indeed, "doing one's part". That there was, in fact, no single correct answer to that notion.

As for illegal downloading, no, I don't support that. Never have, never will. It's theft, and theft is low business.

I 100% agree with you that it's subjective and supporting a film, or not supporting a film in protest, can both be fairly categorized as "doing one's part".  True, taking either position can have its own share of foreseeable backfires, but both can be classified that way nevertheless.

My commentary was only qualified to a specific position already taken, not to proclaim there is one position to take.  At least, that is the way it was intended.  As anything I say, I probably could use a few edits for clarification sake.  Cheers!  ;D

Looks like there won't be any emissary scenes.

They include:

- Traeger meets McKenna
- Lynch goes shopping
- Inspection of the house
- bloopers

Maybe there will be other stuff, my source tells me that's it though.

I imagination Lynch goes shopping might be him winning the Winnebago.

I've done a bit of research and it seems that if anyone is after it in 3D (like I am) you're going to have to look for a Scandinavian import. According to blu-ray.com, it's only out in 3D in Finland, Denmark, Sweden and Norway. Yay  :-\

Won't know for sure until it's released. I'm UK so Region B is fine for me. With Fox releases, it's hit or miss as to whether they bother to region code them or not.

The Predator hound there also has those "thorns" the hounds had in "Predators"
it almost looks like a different breed of the same creature.
& It doesn't have dreadlocks, so that's a plus- the Upgrade seems to have Freddy Krueger hands though.
But the Wristblades he's adorned with are very much the aesthetic of the original Predator.

I had no problem with the designs. I think the movie would have been the same no matter who did the creature effects.

stan winston's designs are atleast twice as good as anything since his work on the predator. Everything not made by him and his studio is just an imitation of a great design. The last time i saw a proper predator was the elder at the end of p2. All down hill from then on.

Wish we could have had those clay models used more as the overall looks for the Upgrade, Predator dogs even (because this clay model is basically the same as the movie, but no dreads and the horns around the head are a great homage to the Predators hounds as being a separate breed) & that other predator on the right is a nice replica of the City Hunter more or less.

But still come on, ADI put in a lot of detail and creativeness with some of the material shown in that 1min video preview so far. It's still such a shame that not more was utilized from what we're seeing here! >:| At this point, I can get over the weak and diasspointing storyline that The Predator went with, but I really wished for more practical effects and new Predator designs and material...the Fugitive had a great time on screen, which is annoying why more wasn't done with him & the Upgrade should have been more of a mix with this clay model/movie version, BUT he needed practical on-screen shots to really sell the Upgrade. Oh well, still looking forward to the DVD and the extras to see more of whatever else there could have been.

Truly.  Especially with regards to the Upgrade, the clay models seem to paint a more palatable picture.  Some of the designs that they came up with would have been a good addition to the film.  Makes me curious as to why Fox chose to go the direction they did with the visuals.  In the podcast, it's mentioned that the studios can get scared (for lack of a better word) if the changes are too drastic.  The models in the video seem fairly tame compared to what we got in the movie, so it's interesting that they went with the more drastic looks.  Either way I'm really curious to see what's all on the disc  :)

id love to see another book dedicated to the concept arts, from sketches to practical effects etc. I have the other adi books and now the making of the predator but it still could do with a lot more drawings and models etc. shown, even if they didn't make the movie. these designs are great.

I just prefer Stan's design. He is the Parent of the design and he made it what it is along with kevin hall.
He is Elvis and everything since is the vegas strip. Hence the mouth never being as nice when it is closed then in the first two movies..
Just should have had the clan at the end of p.2 go off and hunt aliens as a movie.

Good read. I'm happy the blu-ray received high points in video and audio quality... no detriments to find (other than one someone has with the film itself).  I plan on checking out the additional features myself tonight.

I also did an unboxing of sorts myself with the blu-ray / "Art of the Hunt" book combo:

The same reason I watched it. I had heard and read everything that was awful about it. But sometimes, seeing is believing. There is always a hope that everyone else is wrong, or has failed to see something good in it. That there might be a few things I would enjoy.

I had a basic understanding of what I was in for, and I put my expectations underneath the floor. It didn't help. What I saw blew my expectations straight into the ground and all the way to China. But, someone else might like it. If I hadn't watched it for myself yet, I'd still be wondering if I was missing out on something. I cant blame others for wanting to know.

The movie was crap on the big screen.  Nothing is gonna change when it's on Blu-Ray.  Add as many "special features" as you want.

It was crap then, it's re-packaged crap now.

Literally no buzz about this film 2 weeks after it was released.  No one cares about this forgettable film.

I liked parts of it very much. Mainly the fugutive killing everyone in the lab.
I did not care for the kid or the lead actor very much or olivia munn knowing everything over and over out loud.
I would have had more of the loonies killing other people to survive instead of going after the fugitive predator.
The sniper who got his arm blown off just kind of dissapears after shooting a flare.

Also they wasted use of a great parcore athelete by not having him do cool flips or atleast more then running and walking.
I was really looking forward to seeing him show off his moves in a predator outfit.
I think the predator actor was the best part.

I don't hate the film, just wished they didn't mess with the lore.

I don't hate it. It's entertaining in parts. Does that count?
I felt the same with avpr, I didn't like the that much as a whole but liked all the scenes with wolf. I'd like to see more predator scenes with them talking and interacting with each other. In the original he was just the monster but now I'd like to see more predator characters.

I dont trust any review that does not automatically say that this is one of the worst movies of the year.

I don't trust any reviews, other than those done by AVPGalaxy. Even then, I still have to see for myself.

Everyone should always be allowed to make up their own mind.

Not always. Case in point I couldn't purchase the Zavvi UK disc of "Terminator 2: 3D" because it was region specific, so I ultimately purchased a Russian copy.

Why a 3D disc was never released in the US while the whole point of T2's theatrical re-release was its 3D conversion, is beyond me.

Blu Rays have regions, but much fewer than DVDs did. I think there's only A B and C for BR regions.

Acquire a Region-Free Blu-ray Player.
Solved.

3D players are a whole different type of blu-ray animal. Just like standard blu-ray players can't run 4K discs, standard blu-ray players can't run 3D discs either.

But considering the 3D format is all but dead in the US, I definitely would like to avoid locating and purchasing a region-free 3D Blu-ray player when the format is already on life-support (which definitely saddens me since I'm a fan of the format. :'()

I think you're best giving up
on the format then.

4K's 3D's replacement.

I own precisely one 3D blu-ray, and that's only because the unrated cut of The Wolverine was only available in that set. And it's not even on the 3D disc.

But 4K and 3D are really Apples and Oranges. One is just an improvement in clarity and resolution and the latter is more emmersive with its illusion of depth perception

I must tell you though, there is no substitute for watching a well made 3D film on a flat HD screen at home. Of course it puts low lit badly 3D converted theaters to shame, but it even bests IMAX Theaters. The crisp 3D adds so much, I don't believe I could watch "Avatar" or "Guardians of the Galaxy" the 2D way again.  The wonder is real.  :)

Yep, the 3D version is a separate disc.  ;D

Glad to hear the release is good on the technical side. I'm still disappointed about the features on this (and Covenant) but that's unfortunately where we're at. :/ Surprised to hear you liked the film as much as you did.

It wasn't that different from your take on the film. I just think it could have been so much worse and as a one-off entry, it was decent enough.

I've never seen this in theatres.  I bought the Blu-ray and watched it.... only once.

You know those times when you go into a film with lowered expectations because all the reviews are bad, and you end up really liking the film, because you were expecting something much worse?  This isn't one of those.

Maybe it's time Hicks gets on the unrated blu-ray AvPR train too!
