QuoteShane Black looks back fondly on his time as Rick Hawkins in the 1987 film Predator. Oh sure, he gets brutally murdered about an hour in and is the first of our heroes to get picked off, but it's still a treasured memory nonetheless. In fact, it was a desire to revisit his youth that led Black to co-writing and directing The Predator, which lands in theaters September 14 (September 13 in the UK). Or as Black himself puts it, "I had a bit of a midlife crisis".
Speaking to SFX, Black explained what pushed him to revisiting a franchise he hadn't been involved with for more than 30 years. "I thought, 'Wouldn't it be great, just as a lark, to go back and be a kid again? What could it hurt to revisit a time that was so special, and a type of filmmaking before video games and CG polluted the market with visual overload? When you're forced to rely on a bit more ingenuity to conjure the same sort of effects? It'll be a lark. Let's do it!'"
Black confessed that such a laid-back attitude proved to be a mistake. Working within restraints of the film's budget, having to deal with Vancouver weather, filming with greenscreen, and the pressure of making a new Predator movie that could stand alongside the original proved stressful. "My God, it's been tough," Black admitted.
"The good news is that all of this knits together very well. It's been a ride and a nostalgia thing. It was mostly a midlife crisis thing, if I were to be honest about it," Black said. "If it hasn't exactly made me feel like a kid again, it's certainly reinvigorated me to keep going. I'm blessed and honored to be viable in moviemaking - I've seen lots of people around me fall off. The fact that after 30-something years I'm still able to even do this is something I'm eternally grateful for. I don't know why or how I was given that opportunity, but I'm grateful for it."

The thought of getting an up close look at a Predator restrained to a table whilst all the suits and scientists look on as if they have captured a bug in the back yard, only for it to break free and absolutley obliterate near enough everyone in the room is spine tingling :D
I can just imagine the sights and sounds to accompany the proceedings already.

"the idea is that a group of rogue Predators on their world is not happy that they've been bested not once but twice – and perhaps more – by humans. They send their champions, and the champions never come home. "This is not sitting well with a group that's particularly contentious and ambitious. So I think they conspire to produce a second Predator, the one you see in the movie, who's basically an assassin. He is bred using traits from other species that they have hunted to be the enforcer, the guy who just gets it done. He has a sort of under armour as it were, almost like a crustacean. He goes from one colour to another like a chameleon, so he's got these weird survival skills."
Technically not brand new info, but I'm interested by what this implies - it reads that Upgrade was specifically created/enhanced for a purpose, rather than just roiding himself out because he wants to be better. I'm also happy with the phrasing "a group of rogue predators," since it reinforces my strong preference that it's just one sect doing this rather than the species as a whole.

the Xenomorph skull is still there in Predator 2. Whether it's just an easter egg or not, doesn't matter, it IS there and it does confirm that Xenomorphs exist in the Predator canon, end of story.

A sex movie. ;D
Good thing that's a joke. I don't think a movie that's called "The Sexual Predator" is going to do very well at the box office.
Quote from: Danversity on Aug 20, 2018, 03:07:34 AM
Making AVP canon is far from being "the worst idea ever". The AVP movies might not be good, but on a world-building level they didn't destroy or interfere with nothing within the canon of the franchises. They're not Alien: Resurrection. There are far worse movies and spin-offs out there. Keeping AVP canon is a smart move because for one it lets the door open for a future AVP movie that's actually good, especially now that shared universes are a thing, and also because hell, the Xenomorph skull is still there in Predator 2. Whether it's just an easter egg or not, doesn't matter, it IS there and it does confirm that Xenomorphs exist in the Predator canon, end of story. So you might as well make AVP canon; if The Predator were to blatantly ignore AVP it would just be confusing for some people - the way Prometheus and Covenant were, but worse, since the Predator canon has a direct connection to Xenomorphs from way back.

Quoteo yes, we all watched Bond movies growing up. We all dropkicked invisible bad guys in the backyard. But not all of us can speak fluently and at length about the genius of Martin Brest's work in the 1980s, break down in exacting detail the psychology of John McClane or Neo. Key is a real student of this stuff, which is part of the reason he signed on to The Predator in the first place: he wanted the chance to work with writer-director Shane Black, the mind behind such genre-defining touchstones as Lethal Weapon and The Last Boy Scout, and more recent cult classics like Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and The Nice Guys. "It was a no-brainer," Key says. "He created a genre. Created a genre."
As you might expect, the kind of action heroes Key wants to portray are a little more nuanced and developed than his "Strike Force Eagle" meathead—or even the underwritten badasses from the original Predator. In this latest instalment, that's exactly what Black gives him: "All of the people in this movie are struggling with internal scars, regrets from the past, in the midst of this larger story," Key explains. "I want there to be flaws in the characters that I play, because people identify and resonate with that as much as anything else. Maybe you're not diffusing a bomb, but there might be something in your life that's overwhelming, that makes you feel adrift. The character feels that same way, just with higher stakes. You still have something to link into emotionally."
