So at no point does the movie actually show us the mask has a range.

Feral is happy to fire the gun when he has no idea where the mask is pointing, twice. It does not work out for him either time. This does not characterise him as having a particularly great understanding of the weapon to the audience.

The first time as it was pointed away from him and hits the marked tree when it misses. Able to get in range of Taabe but it doesn't work out for him as Taabe is just that guy and just dodges every shot like a boss.

Second time because he sincerely thought the mask disappeared elsewhere or why else just use it? Look at his reaction when the bolt starts looping around and when he turns to face his own mask. He was utterly confused until the last moment of his life to realize what was happening. We see how the weapon works firsthand when he uses it on one of the Comanche warriors, when it nails on each targeting laser spot. He knows how it works.

The mask probably needs to be in range of the weapon to have the targeting, otherwise it probably acts like a normal dart gun

I don't understand why people say Feral forgets how his weapon works in the final scene. Like am I the only one who sees his final moments confused to why his bolt is circling around him and then realizing too late that Naru used his mask against him? He never anticipated on Naru figuring out his gear. It was a legit "Wtf.....oooOOOOOooooohhh shit" I ever seen in a Predator.

The bolt follows the mask. He's not wearing his mask. So kind of dumb to fire when he doesn't know where the mask is leading it.

Based on his behavior, it seems like once out of range, the boltgun goes into manual mode and just fires directly at where it shoots. The fact that it made a sudden turn surprised him and wondered how is that possible if the mask is no longer around.....unless it is....and that's where he realizes too late that Naru had him figured out and got nailed. 

Context clues and all that

Honestly, I wish they'd have shown him attempting to fumble the speargun to imply some sort of manual mode at some point. But I think more importantly, during the fight wih Tabe, we see the spears follow a straight trajectory before the auto-aim kicks in anyway.

I have no issue with the speargun. The film shows it travels straight for a bit before it begins tracking. Everytime he shot it with his helmet off, he nearly hits his target.

Prey sucked in every ways, but the good thing with all these awful sequels is that
Predator and Predator 2 stand the test of time and get better after each viewing.
Just watching a predator who doesn't look like shit became a luxury.Dwelling into the
past is now the finest thing in life.I've seen the future and it sucks.

Think he needs his own thread so he can shout into the void. You can prefer Predator and Predator 2 to Prey, nobody's gonna hold that against you, but when you say Prey sucks in every way, you lose all credibility...
