Title: The Batman (2021)
Post by: MudButt on Jan 31, 2019, 12:41:53 AM
The Batman, directed by Matt Reeves has finally been dated for June 25th, 2021.

https://deadline.com/2019/01/the-batman-june-2021-release-date-ben-affleck-not-starring-1202545821/

Ben Affleck is reportedly out as the movie will focus on a younger Bruce Wayne (something we've been hearing for months now).

Matt Reeves recently had an interview where he stated the movie will focus more on the detective aspect of Batman more so than any other movie has.

Can't wait for this, War for the Planet of the Apes is one of the best blockbusters of the past five years.

If this movie focuses on a younger Batman, does that mean it's a prequel to Affleck's version and that Affleck could still play Batman in any movies that take place in the Justice League era?

It's possible but it's looking like Affleck is walking away from DC. They want to focus on Reeves movies now.

Possibly. How he'll be able to talk after that super cheek squishing from justice league is beyond me though. Maybe if Alfred gives him an advanced lipular massage.

It's the smart way to go. Affleck lost interest in the role. Gives Reeves a chance to play with a clean slate.

I've seen young Bruce Wayne/Batman done before excellently though (Batman Begins)- why do I need to see it again, I'm sick of watching the Waynes get killed.

I doubt they'll show the Wayne's getting killed. It's not an origin story. It's most likely going to have a Batman in action already he's just going to be younger so they can get a different actor.

Precisely.

I'm okay with this. Onward and upward. If Affleck is done he's done. Waiting years and years for no reason isn't going to change that. Kilmer did one film, Keaton did two. Affleck was good in the role but life goes on.

I'm excited by the potential of a detective style Batman.

Exactly. We've had way too much back and forth with Affleck anyways. It's obvious he's lost interest in the role most likely due to personal problems and the reception to the films. He's a director, he wants to work on his own projects and not spend years on these movies. I'm sure the whole Justice League situation really soured him.

I'd rather get someone fresh in there especially since it's been rumored that Matt Reeves wants to do a trilogy of films and that way they have an actor who can get in there and do 3 movies and be excited about the role. We could get some young blood in there like Dan Stevens, Jack Huston, or a Ben Barnes. I'd love it if they did go the Oscar Isaac route or Jon Hamm but they are probably a bit too old to do a younger Batman at this point.

Jigsaw as Batman? Interesting.

He is good at being a playboy. Especially in the first season of Westworld. He does good work in The Punisher as well and I think he'd have a physical presence for sure with some added muscle. I don't think they can pull some A List star for the role. Get someone who does some good TV work and let them grow with the character. He's got the suave look for sure.

I still maintain that Affleck is the best cinematic Batman we've ever had, but I think WB made a mistake going with the older Frank Miller version.  If this is supposed to be a shared universe with the same kind of longevity as the MCU, they'd better make sure the actors are committed.

RDJ was kind of a fluke for Marvel since his career was in the toilet before he made Iron Man while Affleck's was already in an upswing after The Town, Argo and Gone Girl.

Affleck was great. That warehouse scene in BvS is the best Batman scene we've ever had. He deserved better movies. You're right though. WB should have built towards the Frank Miller version. There's so much history with the Affleck character that was hinted at. Hopefully with the new movie we will get a look into some of what was hinted at but it looks more and more like they're going to try and stay away from the Snyder films.

It's also weird that in Man of Steel, Superman existing is this huge deal, but by BvS (and Suicide Squad by extension), super powered and or costumed bad guys have been a thing for decades.

I imagine that costumed heroes and villains were mostly baseline human freaks in the DCEU prior to the appearance of Superman, who was clearly an alien with godlike powers.

Given his previous work on Watchmen, I think Snyder regarded Superman as the DCEU equivalent of Dr. Manhattan and was therefore a huge paradigm shift for the entire world.

Yeah, perhaps the more superpowered individuals were mostly in the shadows before Superman showed up and it inspired them to be out in the limelight.

This means that The Batman should probably only include the non-powered villains. It's been heavily rumored that The Penguin is going to be the villain in Reeves' movie.

I also imagine that someone like Amanda Waller knew far more about metahumans than someone like Jonathan Kent did.  Hell, she's practically the DCEU equivalent of Nick Fury.  She may have been well aware of the existence of Wonder Woman and Aquaman long before Superman made his first appearance to the world.

She does give Bruce Wayne files on The Flash, Aquaman, and Cyborg at the end of Suicide Squad. She's probably been doing her best to keep things under wraps.

We should be getting casting news soon according to Reeves.

I wonder if we'll hang on to J.K. Simmons and Jeremy Irons. I would hope so.

It would be such a waste if all Simmons got to do was walk across a room and stand on a roof. At least Irons had some good scenes and lines.

Absolutely it would. It's such a great casting too. It's so crazy that we had Gary Oldman as Gordon and it'd be a shame to lose an actor like J.K. Simmons.

Irons has had a few good lines. Let's keep it going! I always love the idea of having an Alfred who at one point could have been Batman.

The casting has never been a problem for the DCEU.  Even Jesse Eisenberg has the potential to be a good Lex Luthor, so long as they avoid depicting him as a hipster doofus in the future.

Yeah, the Superman franchise is in a rut right now unfortunately so I doubt we'll be seeing him back anytime soon unfortunately.

Currently DC has 2 live-action films a year with Shazam and Joker this year, Wonder Woman 84 and BOP in 2020, and The Batman and The Suicide Squad in 2021.

I am interested to see what they do with their Standalone films outside the continuity like Joker if it turns out to be a huge hit. Maybe we get a third movie in one of those years. I think 2019 is going to be a big deal for DC going forward because these movies are essentially part of the new regime of focusing on the characters instead of building a universe. Birds of Prey will be a big clue as to how DC is going to handle things going forward since they just started filming it. It's going to show us if WB is going to meddle with production or allow the creators to make a great movie.

They'll need to scrap it all if they want to distinguish this from the failed DC-CU, or at least if they're totally abandoning it, expect that to be their mentality. J.K Simmons should be playing J.Jonah Jameson regardless.

I don't think they're scrapping it but they're definitely straying from the direction Snyder was heading into. Focusing on solo films first and establishing the characters instead of rushing a team up movie. Aquaman's success will show them people will see the solo films if they're different and show people something we've never seen.

They're not abandoning it.  I have a feeling they're just going to lean more heavily on WW and Aquaman for now and then circle back to Superman when the DCEU is ready for him again.  I really hope he makes a cameo in Shazam.

I think Cavill is done. Same as Affleck. They're focusing on Wonder Woman, Aquaman and these characters. By the time they return to Superman he'll be too old, and a recast will be done. Cavill is the incumbent but they're killing him with time.

Title: Re: The Batman (2021)
Post by: MudButt on Jan 31, 2019, 11:07:36 PM
They're kind of in a sticky situation with Superman because unlike Batman they can't do a younger version since Superman didn't appear until Man of Steel. So they'd either have to recast and let everyone accept it or they need to get a Superman movie going soon. Cavill is a hot property after Mission Impossible: Fallout and now he's filming the Witcher for Netflix so he's not going to get any less busy.

It's just crazy how we're getting a Batman movie from the director of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and War for the Planet of the Apes. That guy is so damn talented.

I'm aware of that. Doesn't change my view. Cavill wants to go on and he loves the character. But the studio won't give an opportunity to actually play him again. I'd like to be proven wrong, but I sadly don't think I will be.

Spoiler
There is a Superman cameo in Shazam, but it's not Cavill; in the test screenings, they used a body double.

The same with Black Adam who's also teased.

So maybe this Big Red S shot was put in for the test screenings only and they'll drag Cavill in for a cameo a la the last scene of Avengers which was shot something like a week before the movie hit the cinema.

We know that there is / were contract wranglings between WB and Cavill - hence, his non-appearance perhaps, but recent leaks and rumours seem to be indicating that the the dispute is coming to an end (Cavill's penchant for Superman themed instas, Ray Fisher's recent diplomatic comments and WB's frantic "Cavill doesn't want script and director approval" comments... months after the original tweet that came out stating that he did want all that stuff).

Hopefully, the contract wranglings are all done - that'd be great cos Cavill is great as Superman.

I don't know. For every Christain Bale as John Connor I was excited about then later ultimately disappointed with, there was a Robert Downey Jr. casted as Iron Man I first hated then ultimately loved. And don't get me started how much I loathed the idea of Daniel Craig as James Bond... who's now my favorite James Bond.

So now I say, who knows, he might be great.

Some fans don't like him because he was the main lead in The Twilight Saga. However, at the end of the day, he's an actor who does the job. That's all it is. Just look at Matthew McConaughey from The Wedding Planner

and ...

PREACH. All it takes is one role. It's easy for people to judge them based off their previous movies. Pattinson was a young actor who was offered the role in a HUGE book series. He signed a contract and fulfilled his contractual obligations in 5 commercially successful films. Since then he has taken roles in numerous indie and experimental films and has stretched his acting muscles to new levels. He hasn't done a mainstream film in some time.

He can pull off a younger Bruce Wayne. I'm excited to see what he does with it if he's officially cast.

I'm not too sure about Kristen Stewart as Catwoman. I'd love for them to cast Eiza Gonzalez or Ana De Armas. For Penguin... well you could go several ways with that casting. A younger gangster or the classic round shaped gangster.

It's no secret I believe the Returns incarnation's the best, the complex incarnation.

I just don't know exactly what you'd do with Old Man Wayne, especially without Selina Kyle/Catwoman.
Perhaps this'll be inspired/a spiritual successor, Catwoman and Penguin are a oddly specific choice.

Robert Pattinson Is Officially 'The Batman'

https://variety.com/2019/film/news/robert-pattinson-batman-1203230054/

QuoteRobert Pattinson is officially the new Batman.

Warner Bros. has closed a deal for the "Twilight" actor to play the Caped Crusader in "The Batman."

Matt Reeves' superhero tentpole hits theaters on June 25, 2021. Variety first reported on May 16 that Pattinson was in negotiations for the part. The studio confirmed on Friday that he had signed a deal.

Pre-production on the Warner Bros.-DC Comics pic is expected to start this summer. No official start date has been set for filming "The Batman."

Reeves, the filmmaker behind the last two "Planet of the Apes" sequels, assumed "Batman" directing duties from Ben Affleck in January 2017. Reeves will produce "The Batman" with his "Planet of the Apes" collaborator Dylan Clark.

Affleck starred as Batman in two titles directed by Zack Snyder: 2016's "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" and 2017's "Justice League." Both films received mixed reviews and were a disappointment for Warner Bros. in its efforts to compete with Marvel Studios in the superhero realm.

Pattinson became a star following the breakout success of the five-film "Twilight" franchise, in which he portrayed the vampire Edward Cullen opposite Kristen Stewart's Bella Swan.

Pattinson is starring with John David Washington in Christopher Nolan's latest film, "Tenet," set to open July 17, 2020. He toplines "The Lighthouse," which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, and appeared in Claire Denis' "High Life," "The King" for Netflix and "Waiting for the Barbarians."

He is repped by WME, the Curtis Brown Group and 3 Arts Entertainment.

Warner Bros haven't got a f**king clue what they are doing.

They should have let Snyder finish JL his way, and then if they wanted to 'Marvelise' the DC universe like they have done with Shazam and Aquaman.  But no, they had to get cold feet and bring in Joss Whedon, and reshoot scenes that didn't have to be re-shot thinking that nobody would notice a CGI upper f**king lip, luckily for them we don't live in a timeline where memes exist...

Now they've recast Batman, which nobody asked for,
We're getting Birds of Prey, which nobody asked for,
We're getting a Trench movie, which nobody asked for,

We're not getting a Flash movie, nor a Cyborg movie, Green Lantern Corps is wishful thinking and a Martian Manhunter movie will never happen.

But hey we're getting a sort of Joker origin movie, which not many people asked for... a joker movie, explaining his origin... the one thing that makes the joker so interesting is when he doesn't have an origin story... but we're getting one with Joaquin Pheonix starring as the Joker in a movie without Batman.

Oh and a rebooted Suicide Squad movie by another Marvel director... which nobody asked for.

We might lose Henry Cavill, Affleck is gone, Ray Fisher and Ezra Miller look like they're on the way but at least we get to see Margot Robbie as 'kind of' Harley Quinn.

Oh and STILL no Man of Steel 2

It hurts me deep, knowing what could have been.  I get it, a lot of people didn't like Snyder's take on DC properties, but a lot of people did, and now that trilogy will remain tarnished, unless by some miracle we get the Snyder Cut but I'm not holding my breath.

As far as The Batman goes, I'm not troubled by Pattinson's casting, outside of Twilight he's put in some good performances, I think he will do a good job.  I just don't care about the movie, I'm not excited at all for it, same for Wonder Woman 2.  I just don't care about the DCEU anymore, and that's bad.

There is no DCEU anymore. It's 'Worlds of DC' now, and the stories are going back to being disconnected.  Mostly, anyway.

I hope it works from here on out. It's a shame the movies didn't do a connected universe or multiverse as well as the CW managed to.

Aquaman and Shazam were more about moving away from the Marvel formula than adopting it. They were also easily the two best films of DC's recent output. In my opinion, of course. Wonder Woman is the only other one that came close, but so much of it felt like Zack Snyder was breathing down Patty Jenkins' neck. I'm more hopeful for the second one.

Wonder Woman, Aquaman and Shazam were good. But without Batman and Superman actors in the concept of a SHARED UNIVERSE they are essentially back to making solo films now. The pretence of keeping a DCEU continuity, ala the coming Birds of Prey movie with Batfleck missing (that's their explanation) and Leto Joker hidden away out of studio shame, is dumb.

After those remaining DCEU heroes are wrapped up, that will be it for the DCEU. I think they're setting the stage for the next era. My guess is that Pattinson will do his trilogy, and the Supergirl film will be made. If there's an appetite for it, Pattinson could do a team up with Supergirl, and perhaps with a newly introduced Superman by then.

Ironically, as far as I can make out, keeping Snyder in the director's chair would have fixed everything. After the knightmare and darkseid, their flash movie would have been flashpoint. That story could easily have acted as a reset button, and allowed all the multiverse to coexist canonically with each other even if they didn't directly coincide.
That would fix any continuity issues between actors playing the same role, and iron out other little inconsistencies. It also then gives a compelling future story to characters who know about flashpoint, by showing how they react.

Instead, WB nixed everything and now we're back to completely disconnected stories, or stories that connect to each other but also retcon things just to fit in with the problems behind the scenes at WB.
Title: Re: The Batman (2021)

I would've allowed Snyder's JL to have been released without reshoots or interference. If WB were uneasy about the guy then they shouldn't have let him do another film after BvS in the first place. If they wanted to pull the plug after that, so be it. Fans would've at least had the real Snyder version in their hands. Instead they have a Whedon Frankenstein monster and the same messy future. As it stands I don't care about the DCEU anymore, apart from Wonder Woman. I'm more of a Batman guy, so Pattinson is where my main attention will be.

who never created anything worthwhile cinematically anyway is disbanding? Oh no!

But hey, maybe Wonder-Woman '84, Batman and Joker will be worthwhile as standalone experiences.
Title: Re: The Batman (2021)
Post by: Nightmare Asylum on Jun 19, 2019, 02:21:41 PM
Aquaman is already totally worthwhile is a standalone. There's one throwaway mention of the JL villain, but apart from that, the movie is basically it's own self-contained world and all the better for it.

Shazam was also very good, and while it is littered with Batman and Superman references, I never really felt like it was actually tied down to the DCEU versions of those versions of the characters, thankfully. I still haven't bothered watching BvS or JL and never felt like I was missing anything at all.

Very hopeful for WW84 and hoping that it can remedy the problems that I had with the first one now that Snyder is gone. Also quite looking forward to Joker, The Batman, and, of course, Aquaman 2 and my boys The Trench.

Let's get a James Wan-produced Swamp Thing movie following on from the show in there while we're at it.

Aquaman is absolutely worth the watch. I was turned off by the initial trailers for plenty of the same reasons but found that it delivers in ways I never expected it to.

Feels almost like the GdT Hellboy movies in tone and creature variety, and after a bit of a shaky first act, it quickly ramps up into a pretty ridiculous, exciting ride.

Granted, the Hellboy movies are definitely better movies, but as far as building a creature inhabited, self-contained "superhero" world with certain distinct horror elements, Hellboy is probably the closest thing I can think of comparing Wan's take on Aquaman to.

For the time being, Aquaman and Swamp-Thing (short though its life may be) are easily the top outputs as far as DC's live action material goes. Rewatched Aquaman a couple nights ago and it is still such a pleasure to watch. I do still need to check out Doom Patrol...

That's not to imply it's perfect.

The entire sequence of Zod and his team being sentenced has its gravity undermined as soon as they're encased within giant dildos.  I can't watch that scene without laughing.

Pa Kent's death scene is also a bit off.

Apart from Dawn of the Dead mainly due to James Gunn, the man is only good at "straight adaptation" (regardless of the source material) but anytime the man's got an original idea, it's no good.

QuotePaul Dano is in talks to join Robert Pattinson in Matt Reeves and Warner Bros. "The Batman," sources tell Variety.

Though the studio would not confirm the role, insiders believe that Dano would be playing the classic comic villain The Riddler.

Dano's casting comes on the heels of Jonah Hill turning down an offer to join the cast. Given how long negotiations went on between the studio and Hill's team, insiders believe WB already had an offer ready to go out to Dano once Hill passed on the role.

Pre-production on the Warner Bros.-DC Comics pic is expected to start this summer. No official start date has been set, although Variety hears that filming could start in late 2019 or early 2020. "The Batman" is scheduled to hit theaters June 25, 2021.

Reeves, the filmmaker behind the last two "Planet of the Apes" sequels, took over "Batman" directing duties from Ben Affleck in January 2017. Affleck departed his role as Batman following "Justice League," allowing Reeves to pick his own Bruce Wayne. Reeves' "Planet of the Apes" collaborator Dylan Clark will produce.

Dano is the second actor to play the iconic riddling criminal after Jim Carrey previously played the role in "Batman Forever."

The "Prisoners" actor is currently filming Jane Campion's "The Power of the Dog." He most recently directed the IFC Films pic critically acclaimed "Wildlife" starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Carey Mulligan. On the acting side, he was recently nominated for an Emmy in the best supporting actor in a limited series or movie category for his work in Showtime's "Escape at Dannemora" opposite Benicio del Toro. He is repped by WME, Anonymous Content, Stone, Genow, Smelkinson, Binder & Christopher and Relevant.

Quote from: The New York TimesYou were saying earlier that we should be skeptical of any actor who wants to play the hero, and yet here you are playing Batman.

Batman's not a hero, though. He's a complicated character. I don't think I could ever play a real hero — there's always got to be something a little bit wrong. I think it's because one of my eyes is smaller than the other one.

What is it about Batman that excites you?

I love the director, Matt Reeves, and it's a dope character. His morality is a little bit off. He's not the golden boy, unlike almost every other comic-book character. There is a simplicity to his worldview, but where it sits is strange, which allows you to have more scope with the character.

Begins is good, TDK is excellent, TDKR is good but tedious, flawed and unfulfilling as an ending, and all of them lack style.

I still prefer Begins.  It was the one that had the least silly Batman voice and costume.

I rewatched the Nolan trilogy not long ago (was never much of a fan) and Begins stands out to me as the strongest Batman flick he did. It's unashamedly Batman. Rain, smog, a rundown, desperate Gotham, a lot of comic book references -- and some dialogue out of a fortune cookie (blame Goyer). By TDK Nolan seemed embarrassed to be doing a movie about a guy in a cape and encased in rubber. The whole Hong Kong sojourn smelled like Nolan sneaking a Bond sequence into a Batman film. Ledger's performance in TDK stands out but the rest of the film is... doesn't work for me. The ending scene with the boats is a pretty rubbish, philosophy class 101 trolley problem. TDKR is absolutely ludicrous and fun if you don't think about it, though Nolan makes some maddening creative choices (his Batman was in the job for a year and stopped because his girlfriend died... not the Batman I know.) Wrapping up, Bale's bat voice never recovers from TDK, which is weird because it was perfect in BB. And the batsuit in TDK/TDKR looks silly: a pencil-necked Batman in ugly, quasi-SWAT gear. LOVED the BB suit, though.

Sometimes watching the Nolan films I'm kinda struck by how stupid the idea of Batman is in this "realistic" world. He seems like a ridiculous figure. I always thought the Burton films, B:TAS etc worked a little better because of how fantastical the worlds were. Always loved the Noir-ish, timeless eras encapsulated in the Burton and Timm-verse.

^ My probably unpopular 2 pence.

No, I'm with you on the second one. It somehow felt it was either 40 minutes too long or 40 minutes too short... if they'd have cut some stuff it would have been better - or... if they had expanded on what they had, again better (for me).

Don't get me wrong, I think its a good film, but I was scratching my head at the lavish praise heaped upon it (Ledger withstanding - that was a tour de force... it's really amazing that Phoenix was on such a par that he's not being compared).

I really thought there would be super-duper-extended-directors cut and was surprised when that never happened.

Begins is also my favourite.

Rises was OK but it did rely on your good will (Bruce recovering from a broken back for instance). I thought the last shot of this movie was a wasted opportunity... I would have loved it of Alfred had just looked up, we see the recognition dawn and him smile - I don't think we needed to see Bruce and Selina at that point?

It certainly looks more home made. Leather cowl, you can see some stitching on it. I need to see the ears before I can fully approve of it though.

Yeah, I liked the simplicity (and color palette) of Batfleck's suit.  It looked tough, but it wasn't covered with an overabundance of exposed plate armor and greeblies.

Returning to something more akin to the Nolan look is a step backwards.

Quote from: Ben Affleck on "The Batman"Africa in 1900 is a long way from "The Batman," which Affleck was supposed to direct himself. He stepped aside, allowing Matt Reeves to take over (and Robert Pattinson to don the cowl), after deciding that the troubled shoot for "Justice League" had sapped his interest. Affleck never seemed to enjoy his time as Batman; his sullen demeanor while promoting "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" in 2016 resulted in the hit meme Sad Affleck. "I showed somebody 'The Batman' script," Affleck recalled. "They said, 'I think the script is good. I also think you'll drink yourself to death if you go through what you just went through again.'"

Pattinson is one of the best actors working today, honestly, so I am very excited to see him here.

Affleck might have been good, but I really don't like Zack Snyder so I never bothered with BvS or JL. All I ever saw of Affleck was his appearance in Suicide Squad, and nobody was good in that.

Affleck did very well with not great material in BvS. In JL, on the other hand, he looks tired, bored, and very likely drunk throughout much of it.

I also think he was very good in Suicide Squad despite it being little more than a cameo.  Hell, I'd have been down for a Batman movie by David Ayer with Leto's Joker (who should have turned out to be a Jokerized Robin, IMO).

Sure, the reshoots from Joss made things super messy with conflicting, contradictory tones/styles. Which made things even worse, I'm sure. But even if was Snyder's unaltered vision put in the theater on release, I never would have gone to see that movie.

I'll say this about Zack Snyder. I respect that he has a distinct style. But his stuff just is not for me at all.

Hope this is something special, Matt Reeves is a solid director and I like that we're finally seeing Riddler and Penguin again, two undervalued Bat-villains. (I also feel we're overdue for a new version of Robin eventually.) So far it feels like they're bringing the gravity and immensity a Batman production should have, like it's a big deal.

Which I'm realy not keen on. I mean. yeah, Nolan did his best with premise of "realistic Batman in realistic Gotham" but I don't like premise itself. That's why, I guess, I enjoyed Rises the most out of whole trilogy - 'cause it went a bit more crazy and comic-booky (in a good way).

People didn't have faith in Keaton as Batman in the past. There were letters to ask for a change. Don't get me wrong, because I'm not saying this is going to be great. I just think we should wait and see, as in The Joker.

Meanwhile, in Batman related news...

Quote from: Ben Affleck via Cinema BlendI didn't know about it. Zack was like, 'Hey, they are doing this thing.' And I said, 'Zack, I love you, and I support you. However I can help you.' I do think that movie, you know, having two directors is a very weird thing. And for Justice League, the director had a family tragedy. ... and so you have a kind of cow's body with a horse's head a little bit with two directors a lot of times, for better or for worse. I do think Zack's cut should be available.

It's very predatory-like, menacing I'd say. It's sharp, you can cut your fingers touching it (don't ask me why would anyone touch it)

And I like it. Damn, I can't re-count how many times I doodled that grinning face with every pencil, pen and piece of paper that I can reach. There's definitely something almost hypnotising about it.

I feel like this concept-art by Bruce Timm makes more justice to TNBA design

I had only started it and I can't wait to get back. The creation of it, the aesthetic of the character, has been fun and I really am so excited to get back and explore it. And I haven't got that much to do. I have a certain amount in the film. I am not all over it by any means. But there are a couple of some tasty scenes I have in it and my creation and I can't wait to get back. Yeah, I totally feel like it is something that I have not had the opportunity to explore before. It feels original and fun. But I am only at the start of the journey so I can't wait to get back and really get into it.

I don't know how alternative the alternative universe would be. According to the Guardian:

QuoteThe Flash is set to be directed by It film-maker Andy Muschietti after Dope's Rick Famuyiwa left the project in 2016. The plot will allegedly ignore the two Joel Schumacher Batman films and continue on after Batman Returns.

Which means it's the Batman 1989 universe.  :o

However, since Alexander Knox was in Crisis on Infinite Earths, that universe got destroyed. Ezra Miller's Flash was in Crisis, so it stands to reason it's canon of some kind. So... I don't even know where I'm going with this.

Maybe Flashpoint will reference the Crisis, and Ezra Miller's Flash will go back to a point before Crisis happened, and blow the whole multiverse wide open again? This would then be able to link back to The Batman as one of the Worlds Of DC.

By "alternative" I meant alternative to the DCEU, since the only films there I've actually liked are Aquaman and Shazam (still need to see BOP).

If it is right in the Burton universe that would be fine by me. I just don't have any interest in Batfleck in the slightest.

Nah.

Personally, I'm interested to see what happens with this one..but even more stoked that Keaton is probable to coming back. Especially cause high chance we will get Batman Beyond.

Plus not gonna lie the last crossover Crisis on Infinite Earth's - one of the coolest parts are seeing the Flashes interact with one another.

Can't wait to get some footage from this this weekend. Between The Batman, The Suicide Squad, and Aquaman 2, this is the most excited I've ever been for DC's slate. Fingers crossed Wonder Woman 1984 delivers, too.

I hate to continually sound negative about one of my favourite characters, but everything about that teaser was great, except the main character.
Pattinson looked like a guy in a high quality Arkham Origins cosplay.
On the plus side, the actual feel of the city was fairly realistic and gritty. I'm now wondering if Gotham PD will be a better TV show than the movie.

Yeah still on the fence about the suit, I feel like the more "plating / layers to a suit" the more it looks like a cosplay or something that would look better in a comic but not live action.  That is why I hate the "you will see an upgraded suit in the sequel" line.

I love the '89 / Batman Begins / BvS suits because they are one layer - simplistic.

His Rogue One work was phenomenal, especially considering how little time he had to put it together. Felt very Star Wars while also standing on its own feel and doing things very differently from Williams.

I wouldn't call Rogue One phenomenal.. it's decent. Nowhere near as good as Williams' work, it felt like a poor imitation at times. 4 weeks isn't a lot, but I doubt it would've been much better with more time. John Powell did a much better job with Solo if you ask me. Although Williams worked on that too.

He actually worked one some cues too, Powell mentioned it in an interview. The fact it's hard to tell who did what shows Powell did a great job blending his style and themes with Williams' stuff. Great score

well since everyone seems to like it. I guess I'll come in and be the buzzkill. Roberts voice made me laugh out loud when I heard it the first... second... even now it does. I understand that lines like that are hard to sell, but like couldn't they have put more venom on it? I mean it's the only damn line spoken in the trailer and it's just not nearly as powerful as it should be. Could be nitpicking.

Aside from that trailer looks fine, though the clown thing seems a little early, and it looks like the deathstroke leak is fake so that's a bummer.

I'll admit that this trailer has given me more hope than I had before.  Maybe The Flash can merge this Batman with the DCEU if it really is Affleck's swan song.  The inclusion of Keaton's version would really help to sell it too.

It's supposed to be more of a detective movie than we've gotten in the previous ones. And I don't know what else he would do with criminals, tuck them in at night?

Of course he's going to beat them up.  But give us a different take on it.  Particularly in light of the "justice" system in the US these days, and how Batman operates outside it.  In comic book land would the guy who murdered people in Kenosha the other night be lauded as a hero like Punisher (rhetorical question - I'm sure he already is by many people)?

Maybe this film will do something different - I hope it does - but so far it looks like they're selling Batman Beats The f**k Out Of People Part XXVI

I don't have any issues with any of the cast.  Keaton was widely shitcanned before Burton's film came out too.
... like Daniel Craig when cast as James Bond, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Hugh Jackman as Wolverine etc... Sometimes, you just need to trust that the director knows what he or she is doing.

Bear in mind it's only been 25-30% filmed, they may not have had much more of the detective elements to show us.

Pattinson's a great actor and pretty much the reason I'm interested in seeing this.

But the trailer has put this on the "wait and see" list.

Cinematography looks amazing. Zoe Kravitz looks great, so does Jeffrey Wright. Still not convinced about Pattinson, and after Reeves' comments about Bruce Wayne being a "reckless rockstar in a decaying manor", I'm not sure he gets the character. Rockstar is not a descriptor I'd ever use for Bruce Wayne.

Quote from: Plot details vía SlashFilm"Two years of stalking the streets as the Batman (Robert Pattinson), striking fear into the hearts of criminals, has led Bruce Wayne deep into the shadows of Gotham City. With only a few trusted allies — Alfred Pennyworth (Andy Serkis), Lt. James Gordon (Jeffrey Wright) — amongst the city's corrupt network of officials and high-profile figures, the lone vigilante has established himself as the sole embodiment of vengeance amongst his fellow citizens.

When a killer targets Gotham's elite with a series of sadistic machinations, a trail of cryptic clues sends the World's Greatest Detective on an investigation into the underworld, where he encounters such characters as Selina Kyle/aka Catwoman (Zoë Kravitz), Oswald Cobblepot/aka the Penguin (Colin Farrell), Carmine Falcone (John Turturro), and Edward Nashton/aka the Riddler (Paul Dano). As the evidence begins to lead closer to home and the scale of the perpetrator's plans becomes clear, Batman must forge new relationships, unmask the culprit, and bring justice to the abuse of power and corruption that has long plagued Gotham City."

Quote from: New Synopsis"Dark, stylish retelling of the dark knight's fight against the crime in Gotham.

As someone who never saw Batman Forever I'll only say that regardless of whether or not I pay to see this flick, the movie must stand trial once it being released. ☝🏻Until then I'll remain cautiously optimistic, given Pattinson's acting skills are solid.

Then, once you've watched it, do a quick search for the Virtual Workprint, because it's a fan edit which uses the deleted scenes in the order of the script. Makes it a better film.

Hopefully, since Akiva Goldsman said he watched it not long ago, and thus confirmed it exists, we might actually be able to get a full extended director's cut, some day.

Batman has been my favorite character forever. I became a BatFan during the 89 batmania and even though after 10 years I wasnt an avid reader anymore (the feel and stories changed too much), I had always kept track of Batman and whats going on with him and his series and bought all the books published about him. And of course loved the films, some more some less. I even had a once popular Batman blog which I abandoned since  http://gothamalleys.blogspot.com/?m=1 (http://gothamalleys.blogspot.com/?m=1)  (too much on my hands), but this, from what I see so far, does not interest me at all. The look, the designs, Pattison, dialogue - so far isnt appealing to me

I liked the movie, although it is too long. There are some shots that could have been trimmed down and scenes that could have been removed and the movie wouldn't have been hurt.

Spoiler
an offender off the top of my head is an aerial shot of Selina and Batman riding motorcycles together for, like, 2 minutes at the end of the movie.
[close]

The Riddler was great, I'd been waiting a long time for a serious take on the character and the movie did not disappoint. The Batmobile is fantastic, the whole mystery/detective angle was a great change of pace. Colin Farrell kills it as The Penguin, although the Danny DeVito version is still pretty iconic. Zoe Kravitz Catwoman is cool, but the Anne Hathaway version is still my favorite.

I read that the movie is inspired heavily by the Batman: The Long Halloween comic, which I have a copy of but never got around to reading. I'm finally getting off my ass and reading it now, though.

The only thing I'd cut from this is...

Spoiler
The Joker scene. Felt like a tacked on commercial for another movie slapped into the one I was watching and pretty much made this movie grind to a halt for a couple minutes there.

Other than that, this is probably my second favorite Batman movie, after Batman Returns.

B-

Spoiler
It needed a tighter cut, the Zodiac killer Riddler is lame, and it keeps going when the movie wrapped up in Arkham. It's saving grace is that Batman and Catwoman have chemistry but it had so much going on it needed to pick a plotline. This feels like I should be watching a Batman show. Give all this time to breath but it's a 3 hour sit that can't decide if it's Batman year 2, the origin of Catwoman, the fight against Falcone, the mystery of who killed Bruce's parents, or about the Zodiac killer. Oh and they flood Gotham because f**k you we're extending the run for no reason.

It's great where it counts but it's issues keeps it from being perfect. Pattinson however is a very good Batman and might be my favorite next to Keaton.

I had no issue with the length at all to be honest, and found that he myraid of interwoven threads built out this world and mostly came together nicely. Mostly, I just loved spending the time in this gross, sleazy, neo-noir rendition of Gotham with this particular itetation of Batman as the detective navigating it.

I wish more comic book movies owned their style the way this one did.

I saw it earlier. It's alright. I wasn't convinced by Robert Pattinson as Batman initially, but the trailers convinced me to see it.

I'm still not convinced by Pattinson's Batman, and there are other things I found questionable. I wasn't disappointed overall, but I definitely wouldn't class it as the definitive Batman movie, as some people have.

It felt very much like a film that was heavily influenced by other takes on the character instead of doing something new.

I find Long Halloween's narrative to be pretty confusing at times but the style, the feel and the artwork make it all a worthwhile ride. Would also recommend checking out lesser known sequel, Dark Victory even though it retreads some bits from LH

This really highlights how much Anne Hathaway sucked in the role of Selina Kyle, not that it's necessarily her fault, Zoe Kravitz's excellent here and really inhabits what exactly makes the character. This film's definitely derivative, but I think the style and the mood makes up for it, and I liked the message about retributive justice and how it applies to Bruce Wayne's character who Robert Pattinson does a good job portraying. Colin Farrell's also utterly unrecognisable in the best possible way.

Well that was a refreshing surprise.  What a great movie.  I had serious doubts about Pattinson in the role but he really impressed.  It took a while for him to convince but an hour in i was sold.

Easily the best Batman since Keaton,  Far far better than the Bale trology which never worked for me at all.  The villains, the setting, the filming, how dark it was all superb.  Yes it was perhaps a tad long but those were the scenes where Pattinson grew into the role.

Probably will post my more elaborated thoughts later

Some of my elaborated (not too organised) thoughts

Spoiler

- Intro was pretty cool, although I feel like I've seen the best part in the trailer

- I liked how Bat-suit looks, especially mask which screamed "home-made" to me. I liked in general how low-tech this Batman was in comparision to others. Seeing Batman's geting dirty was great

- Pattinson was good in the role. I liked how his Batman didn't quite have the experience which is IMO best examplified in the scene when he escapes from GCPD only to hit his head on the bridge. As far as cinematic Batmans go, my ranking would be this: Bale > Affleck > Pattinson > Keaton.

- Riddler was good but not amazing. I couldn't escape thinking about Heath Ledger while watching him especially with whole broadcast hijacking, weird articulation, kidnapping and terrorist attacks. He felt like TDK Joker with Bane's voice. Made me laugh couple of times, actor seemed to enjoy playing the role. I don't get his design though. I'm completely noob when it comes to comics but isn't Riddler supposed to be stylish, wearing green suit, with a hat and a cane ? Is there a similiar design from the comics ? And what his mask was supposed to be made out of?

- Penguin was kinda underutilised but I honestly liked that they didn't try to make him into another "villain" of the movie. He was just a character who existed in this world and I was pleased with it. Bat-mobile chase was neat but I miss how heavy and imposing Tumbler from Nolan movies was

-Zoe Kravitz didn't really impress me as Catwoman. In terms of looks she is probably the closest to Year One Catwoman but that's about it. My heart still belongs to sassy Anne Hathaway

- I feel like Alfred existed in the movie only for that exposition dump in the hospital scene. As far as usefulness goes he was on the same level as Alfred from the 90s movies while Michael Caine and Jeremy Irons got a lot more to do in their respective movies IMO. Also, when that bomb went off, I was like "Oh shit, are they gonna kill Alfred in the first movie !?" But of course they didn't. And who was that old lady supposed to be ? Is she somebody from the comics ?

- A lot of this movie felt like "I've seen this somewhere before". For example, I liked how they made Waynes' past more shaddy than usual and how that made Bruce question the importance of his whole crusade against crime but I feel like I've seen this and the whole "poor vs. rich" riots in 2019 Joker movie. As I've said earlier, Riddler felt very much like TDK Joker knock-off. Also, a lot of this movie reminded me of Batman Begins but I can't quite put finger on what exactly. Idk, maybe because of how shitty and rainy this version of Gotham is ?

- Movie really tries to cram A LOT into it's runtime. Some plotlines get forgotten for the other ones to be picked up, some of them get kinda abandoned. Runtime didn't bother me, movie held my interest till the end but I wish some of its elements were fleshed out more

-Interogation scene in Arkham felt like a nice climax for the movie. Oh well, Batman gotta go kick some goons in Riddler costumes. Kinda took from the weight of the final fight that they were just faceless strangers. And whole flood thing came outta nowhere, didn't it ? Nice visuals though, I liked how Batman jumps from the smoke and is all like "Bwaaarggggh !". Also, I liked when that umasked "Riddler" did a callback to the beginning of the movie, confronting Batman with his own words

- Joker ... Ugh. Did we really need this ?

- Ending was kinda corny and on the nose but I liked how hopeful it was. Visual of Batman in the water holding that flare, a beacon of hope above his head, while surrounded by darkness was quite memorable and impressive. In general, visuals and cinematography were great. Good job, Matt Reeves
[close]

Although, It may seem I have more criticism than praise for the movie I still enjoyed it overall, As I've said, that movie gets how Batman should "feel" and that's most important to me, I love me some good atmosphere. I'm looking forward to re-watching this one to pick up on things I might've missed

Solid 7/10 from me

Give him white "Batvision" contacts too.  I want him to have a DCAU look when he's in costume.

They gave him the contacts, yet didn't make them white?!  Missed opportunity.

The more I see of this, the more I believe Pattinson was miscast.  He's too young, too slim and too soft-spoken for this role.  Each Batman scene plays better in my mind if it had been Affleck in his BvS costume.

I'm sorry but give me Anne Hathaway any day of the week over this. Her Catwoman was near perfect blend of sexy, sassy and professional while Zoe Kravitz's one was all like "I'm hurt and I'm hiding it all deep inside". Nothing against the actress but I just like Nolan's characterisation more. I don't need every character in a Batman movie to be scarred and traumatised. You could tell that Hathaway's Catwoman had a rough upbringing on the streets but the movie she was in didn't felt the need to wallow in "drama"

Zoe Kravitz's Catwoman's an almost perfect translation of Darwyn Cooke and Ed Brubaker's run from the solo novel. I still prefer Michelle Pfeiffer's take but this' no slouch.

Anne Hathaway's the most surface level understanding translation of the character I have witnessed in nearly any medium, as well as a really awful understanding of class politics from Christopher Nolan's writing, inbued into the story.

I would put Pfeiffer above Kravitz as well. I may not like whole "back-from-dead-a-literal-cat" aspect of her Catwoman but she owned that role in a way I felt Kravitz just didn't

Agreed.

Yes, but the Fincher mystery story within The Batman is a major reason why it was almost 3 hours long.
Because on top of the slow Fincher mystery, this also had to have Batman action.
In addition, The Batman was dragged out at the end including with what felt like an after credit scene.

Agreed about Catwoman. She is either a superhero or a super villain which fits the Kravitz & Pfeiffer characters. She is not just a woman who steals things imo (Hathaway).

- But that gets to Nolan's (and his brother's) vision. Batman Begins is true to much of the Batman lore. But the box office for Begins was weak, only 2x its production budget.
- The Nolan brothers then created the most popular action movies they could which had a Batman label on it (Dark Knight & Rises).
Christopher Nolan is a genius at hooking the mass audience but Dark Knight & Rises had little to do with the world of Batman in my mind.

I also thought about Affleck in the role but Pattinson was good enough most of the time.

* A bigger issue for me about the Batman character in The Batman was the writing at the end.
Batman seemed too much like Brad Pitt in Seven.
In my mind, Batman should eventually have more control in a battle of wits with criminals.

6/10

What's most amusing is that I have vivid memories of fans speculating as far back as 2008 that the third Nolanverse film would involve a Zodiac-inspired Riddler.  It's as if Matt Reeves was a TDK fanboy and just wanted to make the movie that he thinks TDKR should have been.

I do like this take on the Batman, 3 hours long and I was there all the way.
There is a mixture of Bale's Bruce Wayne especially from the first Batman Begins  and I think the director really studied what makes a great batman film in terms of tone and cinematography . I found lots of the scenes were very surgical like as if shots were taken from certain films like Terminator Salvation, The Crow and Batman Begins.

I'm especially interested in where they may go with villians considering that the emphasis gears more towards a villains group of thugs and theatrical plot scenerios rather than the  appearance of the villain's themselves. I take it this universe might always make the villians to be more regular (hense the riddler being just himself and less then comicbookish) and their crimes to be more devastating and graphic.

This is the 10th batman movie, and at this point it's starting to feel like they've done everything they can with the character. There's nothing in this movie that felt fresh or interesting. I liked the gritty Seven-inspired cinematography, and the slow-burn detective story approach...but the actual mystery that unfolded was uninteresting and forgettable. The movie slowly builds up to the fact
Spoiler
that a crime boss was in control of the city's politicians......and that's it. That's the big payoff, I sat for 3 hours to learn that the obvious bad guy was controlling a bunch of politicians I don't know or care about. In the meantime, you get to watch pointless revelations like Bruce's father was corrupt....or was he? Did Meroni have Thomas Wayne killed or was it some desperate guy with a gun? This question is never answered and has nothing to do with the rest of the plot. Why even raise the question in the first place? There's also this pointless subplot about Falcone being Catwoman's father.....why was this necessary? You could have just as easily said Selina worked for Falcone but for some reason they pulled this Darth Vader moment and I felt nothing by the end because it didn't mean anything by the time Falcone got shot. Riddler was interesting until he turned into a lame blogger, dulling out the same tired message The Dark Knight Rises and Joker already gave us, "Rich people are bad! Revolt!" Oh and speaking of Joker......they just couldn't resist, could they? They just can't go five seconds without shoving a new joker down our throats.

Batman's character arc in this movie is him coming to the realization that vengeance isn't the answer, He needs to be a symbol of hope. That's nice and all except for the fact that Batman never comes off as angry or vengeful, he just comes off as a sad kid from beginning to end, you don't feel like his character has changed, he just tells you he has.  Overall, Disappointing, don't care to ever watch it again.

I'm not bitter but I think Affleck would have been more effective as Batman.
Ben's voice is more powerful than Robert's imo.

I'm fine with "The Batman" being like a David Fincher film if the run time could be shorter than three hours and if Batman was in more control of the villains at the end. A lot of the "I'm helpless" vibe didn't work for me.

PS. Zoe's Catwoman was very good.
